Deeply appreciate my family's sacrifices: Rahul Dravid after agreeing to continue as India head coach

Rahul Dravid is set to continue as India's head coach after accepting the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) offer to extend his contract. It is to be noted that Dravid's contract was till the 2023 ODI World Cup, where India ended as runners-up. However, the former Indian captain will continue to serve as the head coach at least till the 2024 T20 World Cup to be held early next year in the West Indies and USA. The contracts of the support staff -- who joined during Dravid's first stint namely, Vikram Rathour (batting coach), Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach) and T Dilip (fielding coach) -- have been extended as well.

It is to be noted that Dravid took over as India men's head coach in late 2021 after Ravi Shastri's tenure ended. Under him, India remained a dominant force at home across formats and ended as runners-up in the WTC 2023 cycle and the home ODI WC (winning ten games on the trot to enter the final, where they lost to Australia by six wickets). In addition, Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue reached the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 WC in Australia.

As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, BCCI has been impressed with Dravid's working style. They were eager to continue with him in a bid to ensure continuity to the structure he had put in place since late 2021. The board feared that it might otherwise get disrupted under a new coach.

Dravid's first assignment in his second stint as head coach will kick off with India's all-format tour of South Africa, starting early next month. India will play three T20Is and an equal number of ODIs before wrapping up the tour with two Tests. Soon after, the Indian team will shift their focus to the five Tests versus Ben Stokes-led England at home before the commencement of the T20 WC in June.

While Dravid has been criticised and lauded for his efforts so far as India's coach, he will look to end their ten-year-long ICC title drought in the upcoming T20 WC. India have got closer to the title during his first stint, thus, the former Indian cricketer will be desperate to end the global trophy drought. Rahul Dravid agrees to contract extension, to continue as India head coach at least till 2024 T20 World Cup

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Rahul Dravid engaged in an intense discussion lately to determine his role as the coach of the Indian Cricket Team going forward. With the conclusion of the World Cup 2023, Rahul Dravid-led coaching staff’s two-year tenure ended. While Dravid is said to be keen on pushing for an extended run, the higher-ups in the Indian Cricket Board are inclined towards appointing a new head coach.

While several names are being discussed internally, the latest reports suggest that the National Cricket Academy (NCA) head and veteran VVS Laxman is the strongest contender to replace Dravid as the new India head coach. BCCI’s decision-makers want the new coach to settle and prepare the team for next year’s T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, given it's still eight months away.

"Rahul and the BCCI had a talk about where things stand now. We will respect the decision taken by him. The general feeling is that with the T20 World Cup about 7-8 months away, there is time for a new coach to come in and build a team and set a process. He (Dravid) is quite aware of that,” a BCCI official close to the development told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Upset over the World Cup 2023 snub, India keeper-batter Sanju Samson opened up on captain Rohit Sharma approaching him right after the 15-man squad announcement. India named a star-studded squad almost a month before the curtain raiser in Ahmedabad, with Ishan Kishan making the cut, while Sanju, who was tipped to fill in for the backup keeper’s slot, failed to get into the final 15.

Having played in the T20I series against Ireland earlier, Sanju was overlooked in the squad for the Asia Cup, with Kishan getting preferred.
India beat Australia by two wickets in the five-match T20I series opener at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam on Thursday (Nov 23). Under Suryakumar Yadav, India opted to bowl first as Australia rode on Josh Inglis' 50-ball 110, laced with 11 fours and 8 sixes, to post 208 for 3. In reply, India were in a spot of bother at 22 for 2 before stand-in captain Suryakumar's 42-ball 80, Ishan Kishan's 39-ball 58 and Rinku Singh's 14-ball unbeaten 22 took India past the finish line. Thus, Surya's first-ever match as international captain ended with a win.

For his impressive and counter-attacking 80, Surya also ended with the Player-of-the-Match award. Thus, the Mumbai Indians (MI) star batter joined Jasprit Bumrah to become only the second Indian to win the POTM award on T20I captaincy debut. It is to be noted that Bumrah achieved the feat early this year, when he captained India for the first time in the shortest format during the three-match T20I series opener versus Ireland, in Dublin, in mid-August (which was also his return to international cricket after a long injury layoff).

Overall, SKY became the 13th Indian to lead in the shortest format of the game. So far, the likes of Virender Sehwag, MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, Bumrah, Ruturaj Gaikwad and SKY have led India in T20Is.

Just enjoy and express yourself. We’ve been in such situations many times in franchise cricket, just told Ishan to enjoy himself. We knew what was going to happen."

Ind vs Aus, 1st T20I: Suryakumar joins Jasprit Bumrah in ELITE list after memorable captaincy debut

India edged past Australia by two wickets in the five-match T20I series opener, in Visakhapatnam, on Thursday (Nov 23). Opting to bowl first, Indian bowlers were taken to the cleaners courtesy of Josh Inglis' 50-ball 110 as the Aussies posted 208 for 3. However, at one point even a total in excess of 220 looked possible. In reply, India were tottering at 22 for 2 before Suryakumar Yadav (42-ball 80) and Ishan Kishan (39-ball 58) stitched a memorable 112-run third-wicket stand whereas Rinku Singh played a crucial hand (14-ball 22*) to take the hosts home in a last-over thriller.

After the game, Suryakumar opened up on a memorable win as India went 1-0 up in the five T20Is. This was SKY's first-ever game as India captain and the veteran right-hander ended with an impressive knock, also winning the Player-of-the-Match. Post India's win, SKY credited wicketkeeper-batter Kishan for his whirlwind knock.

"I think he helped me really well. For me to be fearless, him staying there, and his knock was very important," Surya said in the BCCI video. The duo took on the Aussie bowlers strategically and targeted the shorter boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking.

SKY also heaped praise on Rinku, who is slowly but steadily gaining a name for himself as India's T20I finisher. "I think it was very calm, though, but it was a very it was a pressure situation.
After the match, Kishan told the broadcasters, "I think bowlers did a great job, we were put under pressure, but credit to Mukesh for the way he bowled, the wicket wasn't easy to bowl on, but to go at less then 9 rpo was outstanding, Rinku as well, playing at the early stage of his career and playing that kind of innings, it was special. We didn't want to put too much pressure on the later batters, credit to Surya bhai, he planned his innings superbly, he can always play the big shots whenever needed. The plan was to get quick runs (on the partnership), so even if I got out, we needed the runs on the board. The ball I got out, he wanted me to look for a single, but the gap between runs required and balls left was big and I had to go for my shots. It's a young side, most of them have not played against big teams like this, we'll make mistakes, we'll talk about it during the team meetings and come back better with the ball in the next match."

Thought there will be a little bit of dew but there wasn’t. It isn’t a big ground and I knew batting will get easy. Thought they might get 230-235 but the bowlers did really well. Just enjoy and express yourself. We’ve been in such situations many times in franchise cricket, just told Ishan to enjoy himself. We knew what was going to happen."

He added, "I left the luggage of captaincy in the dressing room. I try to enjoy my batting. The atmosphere was amazing, thanks to the crowd. Was great to see how the boys kept their nerves. India attain SPECIAL feat after chasing 209 vs Australia in 1st T20I in Visakhapatnam

Rahul Dravid's two-year contract as Team India's head coach came to an end with India's ODI World Cup final loss to Australia, on November 19 in Ahmedabad. Dravid was given the top job after Ravi Shastri's exit in late 2021. The former Indian captain's contract was set to get over with the ODI WC campaign, at home, and The Wall is unwilling to extend his contract.

As per a report in TOI, multiple sources close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have confirmed that Dravid is not interested in extending his contract any further and, hence, his close friend VVS Laxman is likely to succeed him as India's head coach. Laxman, who is the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), is currently acting as the head coach for India's five T20Is versus Australia at home. He has donned the role on a few occasions as well, when a second-stringed India toured Zimbabwe, Ireland and New Zealand as well as hosted South Africa during Dravid's tenure.

A reliable source in the BCCI told TOI, "Laxman has expressed his keenness for the job. During the World Cup, Laxman travelled to Ahmedabad to meet the BCCI's top bosses in this regard. He's likely to sign a long-time contract as the Team India coach, and will certainly travel with the team in that capacity for the upcoming tour of South Africa, which will be his first as the full-time India head coach."

The source further revealed, "Dravid has communicated to the BCCI that he isn't keen to continue as a full-time coach. For close to 20 years, he has travelled with the Indian team as a player, and for the past couple of years, he again went through the same grind, which he doesn't want to undergo. He's fine with a role at the NCA as the head there (a role he previously served in), which will allow him to stay back in his hometown Bengaluru. Like earlier, he's fine with coaching the team sporadically, but not again as a full-time coach."

Another source informed that Dravid is already in talks with an IPL team for a two-year contract. "He's in talks with an IPL team for a big two-year contract," the source shared.

With Dravid set to go, Laxman might continue with the former's support staff -- batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T Dilip -- or bring in his own set of people in the mix.

"They might continue, or Laxman, like any other coach, might want to bring his own set of people in the support staff," the source added.

Hence, an official announcement is awaited with regard to India's head coach position. Under Dravid, India won the Asia Cup (ODIs), reached the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-finals, and ended as runners-up in the WTC Final and ODI WC at home. India continued to remain dominant at home across formats -- only losing an ODI series to Australia -- but lost a Test series in South Africa, a one-off Test in England, a T20I series versus West Indies in West Indies and the USA and fell flat in the 2022 Asia Cup (T20Is).

A reliable source in the BCCI told TOI, "Laxman has expressed his keenness for the job. During the World Cup, Laxman travelled to Ahmedabad to meet the BCCI's top bosses in this regard. He's likely to sign a long-time contract as the Team India coach, and will certainly travel with the team in that capacity for the upcoming tour of South Africa, which will be his first as the full-time India head coach." Also read: Ind vs Aus, 1st T20I: 'Completely different' Rohit Sharma walked the talk during home ODI WC - Suryakumar The source further revealed, "Dravid has communicated to the BCCI that he isn't keen to continue as a full-time coach. Like earlier, he's fine with coaching the team sporadically, but not again as a full-time coach." Another source informed that Dravid is already in talks with an IPL team for a two-year contract.

A few current and ex-cricketers, including David Warner and now Michael Vaughan, reminded former India batter Mohammad Kaif of what it means for a team to deliver on D-day.
R Ashwin opened up on getting just one game in the recently-concluded ODI World Cup at home. Ashwin was not part of India's initial World Cup squad but an injury to spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel led to his inclusion just days before the tournament's commencement.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the 37-year-old Ashwin said, "Never thought that my run at the World Cup would end after playing one match in Chennai, because I was bowling with good rhythm."

In the game between India and Australia, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Oct 8, Ashwin ended with match figures of 1 for 34 as India dismissed the Aussies for 199 in 49.3 overs riding on Ravindra Jadeja's 3 for 28. Later, India chased down the score with ease, despite early jitters, thanks to Virat Kohli's 85 and KL Rahul's 97 not out.

Kuldeep is currently away from cricketing action and, thus, not part of the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian team for the five T20Is versus Australia at home. He is expected to be part of India's tour of South Africa, starting next month.

While the pain of defeat lingers...: Kuldeep Yadav reacts, pens heartfelt note after India's ODI WC final loss

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir feels India were not brave enough with the bat in the middle overs which cost them dearly in the ODI World Cup final loss versus Australia on Nov 19 in Ahmedabad. Rohit Sharma-led India were asked to bat first at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. They were 82 for 3 after 10 overs but they went into a shell and only managed four boundaries (not even a single six) for the rest of the 40 overs. The middle overs, from 11 to 40, saw Indian batters hit only two fours and, thus, India ended with 240 in 50 overs, which was eventually chased down by Australia with six wickets in hand in 43 overs.

Thus, Gambhir believes India's timid show with the bat in the middle overs resulted in their big loss. Speaking to Sportskeeda, the 2011 ODI WC winner said, "It's a double-edged sword. But I have always said this, the most courageous team will go on to win the World Cup. I can understand that you need time to build a partnership but 11 to 40 overs is a very, very long time. Someone should have taken that risk."

Gambhir further pointed out, "I would have actually liked India going really aggressive with their top 6-7 batters even if they had been all out for 150. I would have been fine. But if you feel you can defend 240 in a World Cup final...that is not where you fight. It is either this way or that. Either we go 150 all out or 300. That is where India have lacked. That is where India have not gone on to win ICC tournaments. Rohit should have sent the message before the game that even if I get out we should go aggressive."

Gambhir felt that since Virat Kohli -- who ended with most runs in the 2023 edition (765) -- was playing the role of an anchor, other batters should have been more aggressive. "Kohli has played a role of anchoring the innings, but the rest all should have been aggressive. KL should have gone. What harm would it have caused? We would have been 150 all out. But had we been brave, we could scored 310 and India would have been world champions. This is not the 1990s. 240 is not a good score at all. You need 300-plus totals. India were not brave enough," Gambhir added.

Being all-out for 240 in 50 overs, India had Australia reeling at 47 for 3 before Travis Head's 137 and Marnus Labuschagne's 58 not out took their side home with seven overs to spare. With the win, Australia lifted their sixth ODI WC trophy.

We stand with you today and always: PM Modi's message to Team India after World Cup final loss

Rohit Sharma-led India were demolished by Pat Cummins' Australia in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition's final on Sunday (Nov 19) in Ahmedabad. Being asked to bat first at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, India only managed 240 in 50 overs with skipper Rohit (40), Virat Kohli (54) and KL Rahul (66) being the top-performers. The target was always below-par and Australia chased it down in 43 overs with six wickets in hand.

Despite reeling at 47 for 3 at one point, Australia came back resolutely and went past India comfortably due to Travis Head's 137 and Marnus Labuschagne's 58 not out. After the game, many Indian players were emotional as the fans were also left shattered. As the dust has settled down on the heavy defeat, many Indian cricketers have reacted to the lost opportunity and opener Shubman Gill also joined the bandwagon.

The 24-year-old Gill, who missed the first two games in CWC 2023 due to dengue, shared a heartfelt post on X, formerly Twitter. He wrote, "Been almost 16 hours but still hurts like it did last night. Sometimes giving your everything isn’t enough.
Talking about Gill's campaign, the right-hander amassed 354 runs in nine matches at an average of 44.25 and a strike rate of 106.94. He managed four fifties but fell cheaply in the summit clash, getting out for 4.

By the time the next ODI WC comes, in 2027 in South Africa, Gill is expected to be having more responsibilities on his shoulders and the star batter will hope to guide the team to the coveted title.

'We were not good enough today'

At the post-match presentation of the final, Indian captain Rohit opened up on the loss. He said, "The result has not gone our way. We were not good enough today. We tried everything but it wasn't supposed to be. 20-30 runs more would have been good, KL and Kohli were stitching a good partnership and we were looking at 270-280 but we kept losing wickets. When you have 240 on the board, you want to take wickets but credit to Head and Labuschagne who stitched together a big partnership and put us completely out of the game. We tried everything we could but I feel wicket got slightly better to bat under lights. Don't want to give that as an excuse."

This became Australia's sixth men's ODI WC triumph; most by any team. Meanwhile, India's wait for an ICC title continues with their last major success coming in 2013 when they won the Champions Trophy, under MS Dhoni, in England and Wales.

Sometimes giving your everything isn’t enough. We fell short of our ultimate goal but every step in this journey has been a testament to our team’s spirit and dedication. To our incredible fans, your unwavering support in our highs and lows means the world to us. This isn’t the end, it’s not over until we win. To our incredible fans, your unwavering support… pic.twitter.com/CvnA0puhDg — Shubman Gill (@ShubmanGill) November 20, 2023 × Talking about Gill's campaign, the right-hander amassed 354 runs in nine matches at an average of 44.25 and a strike rate of 106.94. He managed four fifties but fell cheaply in the summit clash, getting out for 4. By the time the next ODI WC comes, in 2027 in South Africa, Gill is expected to be having more responsibilities on his shoulders and the star batter will hope to guide the team to the coveted title. 'We were not good enough today' At the post-match presentation of the final, Indian captain Rohit opened up on the loss. Don't want to give that as an excuse." This became Australia's sixth men's ODI WC triumph; most by any team. Meanwhile, India's wait for an ICC title continues with their last major success coming in 2013 when they won the Champions Trophy, under MS Dhoni, in England and Wales.

Rohit Sharma has been the MVP in CWC 2023: Dinesh Karthik heaps praise on India captain

Captain Rohit Sharma takes pride in wearing the Indian jersey regardless of the opposition and the occasion. Ahead of the grandest event in cricket – the World Cup 2023 final between India and Australia in Ahmedabad on Sunday, Rohit feels he and his team are prepared and ready for the marquee clash despite various emotions running wild in the dressing room.

Addressing the media on the eve of the World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Rohit said he wants his team to continue playing the way they have and thrashed opponents thus far. Adding that an enormous amount of hard work has gone into winning ten matches on the trot in this competition, Rohit remains honest about his feelings about playing the daddy game.

"We just want to go out there, keep it nice and easy, and calm. I had said then, 'Yeah it'll be nice to win'. In the same tone, I want to say it again: it'll be nice to win, [and] we've worked really hard. But I don't want to get too excited and feel much pressure about it,” Rohit said.

Tense faces around but players know their roles: Rohit Sharma 'relaxed' ahead of World Cup final against AUS

Captain Rohit Sharma has credited head coach Rahul Dravid for India’s unprecedented and unparalleled run in the World Cup 2023. ODI World Cup 2023: 'Well played Shami!' PM Narendra Modi leads wishes after India beat NZ to enter final

The Indian Team is doing wonders on the cricket field in World Cup 2023, credit for which must go to the players and head coach Rahul Dravid, alongside his staff, putting in countless hours of behind-the-scenes work. From working on the mindset to zeroing in on the final 15 much before the tournament began, the team management had pulled off miracles for the Men in Blue.

With their contracts up following the end of the home World Cup 2023, questions surrounding the coaching staff's future have started to pop up.

While the BCCI is said to be taking positive steps towards offering new contracts moving forward, considering the T20 World Cup next year, the board hasn’t had any word with anyone from Team India’s coaching staff.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has shut down the controversy surrounding the Wankhede pitch after a section of international media, in the lead-up to the India vs New Zealand semifinal claimed that BCCI had doctored the pitch to suit the host nation.

Speaking at a presser after the match, Williamson said the pitch was a used one but it played just the way a regular surface is supposed to.

"No, I mean, yeah it was a used wicket, but a pretty good surface really, as we saw. I mean, they got plenty out of it in the first half of the match. And conditions, I guess they change as they go under lights and things, and that's what we've seen throughout this competition," said Williamson.

The Wankhede pitch throughout the tournament has offered a little bit to spinners in the first half before giving the same incentive to fast bowlers under lights as humidity and light breeze come into consideration. The same happened on Wednesday (Nov 15) when Indian bowlers took the ball post 6:30 pm.

"That's what you expect and they played really well. So yeah, I mean it's disappointing to get to this stage and not go further, but also at the same time you sort of reflect on the seven weeks rather than a couple of small moments and we lost to a better side," added the Kiwi captain.

After the match, legendary former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, in a no-holds-barred monologue, slammed the critics of the pitch by terming them 'morons'.

"All the morons who were talking about the pitch change. Just stop. Stop taking potshots at Indian cricket. People have said a lot of things to attract eyeballs or whatever. It is all nonsense. The pitch was there and even if it was changed, it was there before the toss for both the teams," said Gavaskar.

"Stop talking about pitches. Already they are talking about Ahmedabad and the second semifinal hasn't even taken place. They are talking about the pitch being changed in Ahmedabad. Nonsense," he added.

While a section of media created furore regarding the fresh pitch, ICC released a statement saying no regulation was violated in the allotment of the surface.

The Indian spinners had a tough time on the pitch as Williamson and Daryl Mitchell never allowed them to settle. It was Mohammed Shami's genius with the ball that allowed India to walk away with a win when the Kiwis at one point, threatened to chase down 398.

World Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma reveals reason for healthy atmosphere in dressing room. A secret fashion show

India and New Zealand are back facing each other in the World Cup 2023, this time in the semis scheduled on Wednesday (Nov 15) in Mumbai. We've played good cricket throughout World Cup: Kuldeep on facing New Zealand in repeat of 2019 semis clash

Former Indian men's cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri has played down the concerns of fans after the team was drawn to face New Zealand in the World Cup semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai next week.

Shastri said India had already beaten New Zealand in the World Cup and that past records do not matter much on the day.

"It's water under the bridge. Why does India have to look back on that loss? We've already beaten them in this World Cup. Do hell with that," Shastri told host broadcaster Star Sports.

Former Indian cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar also chimed on the topic and said India were looking much more ominous than New Zealand this time.

"India were doing well in that tournament as well. But on that fateful day, things went wrong, and India's top order crumbled. This time India are much stronger, no real weakness. Things are different now," Manjrekar said.

India took on New Zealand last month and courtesy of a stunning bowling effort from Mohammed Shami, managed to subdue the Kiwis without much fuss. World Cup 2023: 'Hell with that', Ravi Shastri plays down concerns of repeat of 2019 against New Zealand

Coming off fresh after a week’s gap, the Indian Team is unlikely to change their playing XI against the Netherlands. With both teams appearing in the final league match of this World Cup on Diwali in Bengaluru, head coach Rahul Dravid hinted at a full-throttle Indian Team taking the field on Sunday (Nov 12). Without spilling any beans on the team combination in another CWC dead rubber, Dravid said the players have had good rest in the past week.

"I mean, honestly, we've had six days off from the last game," Dravid said on the eve of the match in Bengaluru. "So, we're pretty well rested. We've got one game before the semi-final and the guys are in good shape. That's all I'll say without giving away much."

Considering India’s stance on the points table, with them remaining unbeaten in eight contested matches thus far, Dravid was asked about a potential change in the seam-bowling attack, with Prasidh Krishna getting a game, to which he replied,

"So, now, at this stage, it's about just focusing on getting the guys who you think are going to be playing in the XI in the best possible space mentally and physically, to be able to play that semi-final and, hopefully, the final if we earn it," Dravid said.

"So, that will be the single-pointed thinking. There are times for larger-picture thinking, and there are times for narrow-focus thinking in my opinion, and now's the time for narrow-focus thinking if everyone is fit,” the head coach added.

We had the right balance: Dravid

Dravid shed light on the importance of having the right balance in the team, which eventually leads to desired results.

Speaking on Hardik’s absence and how the team has coped up since then, the head coach said the balance and build-up to this World Cup saved what could be a blow to the side.

Referring to how India suffered the wrath in the previous two tournaments due to an imbalance in the team, Dravid said, "I think when you're playing big tournaments like this, you want your best players playing. Unfortunately, at the T20 World Cup [last year], we probably didn't have a little bit of that luck, especially when you lose players like Bumrah and Jaddu [Ravindra Jadeja]. At the World Test Championship, we missed a couple of guys.

"Even here, to be honest, we have missed a couple of guys, one before the tournament and one during the tournament. But we've been able to respond really well so far. And I think that's been, again, something I'm very proud of.

"We had a balance. We've structured the whole thing around certain things. But when that hasn't happened, we've had the ability, the skill, and the mental fortitude to be able to bounce back and to be able to still compete and do really well. So yeah, I think credit to the guys, credit to, like I said, I think even the NCA for all the work that they do,” Dravid added.

Unchanged XI on cards for Men in Blue as India prepare for CWC clash against Netherlands on Diwali

Pakistan is officially out of the World Cup 2023 after England elected to bat first in their final league game at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Considering the best possible scenario for Pakistan to reach the CWC semis, they had to bat first, post a massive total and win the game with more than 275 runs. Now, with his scenario going down the drain right at the toss, the Men in Green have criticism to tackle from all quarters.

On the match eve, former Pakistan cricketers-turned-pundits Shoaib Malik and Mishab-ul-Haq tore into the base setup, insisting several changes following the dismal World Cup 2023. While most pointed towards improvement in the domestic structure, Malik stressed having a larger pool of players, just like India, for marquee events like this.

Drawing a comparison with the host nation India, which sits comfortably in the first position, Malik said despite injury concerns, India remained head and shoulders ahead of everyone in this tournament, urging Pakistan to take a leaf out of their book and prepare accordingly.

“In this World Cup, India were covered from all the aspects. I am not talking about only three departments — bowling, batting and fielding,” Malik said on A Sports.

Having led Pakistan teams across formats in the past, Malik’s former teammate Mishab-ul-Haq opined that winning shouldn’t put the real issues under the mat as they should be addressed and worked upon.

“After winning every series and good performance, we are not ready to hear anything about improvement. I am not only talking about the players, it is overall," Misbah said.

Misbah urged Pakistan not to get complacent after winning a few matches and should concentrate on improving regularly. The batting great added playing good teams in such tournaments would only benefit Pakistan as it would provide a clear picture.

“When the Team is winning, and doing well then why are you pointing out? You need consistent improvement, even if you are winning.

“We should point out the areas, where we can work. Playing against good teams, in good tournaments can give you a better picture. Those who will talk about it, the entire system will be against you,” Mishab added.
