The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to retire the iconic Number 7 jersey, which veteran captain MS Dhoni used to wear, in tribute to his contribution to Indian cricket. A board official close to the information revealed the players in the national team have been informed about this, mainly the debutants, who cannot pick Number 7 for their jersey.

Outside of Dhoni, only legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s Number 10 jersey has been retired in the past, with no one allowed to pick these two numbers.

“The young players and current Indian team players have been told not to pick M S Dhoni’s Number 7 jersey. The BCCI has decided to retire Dhoni’s T-shirt for his contribution to the game. A new player can’t get No. 7, and No. 10 was already off the list of available numbers,” said a senior Board official.

Per ICC rules, every player can choose a number from 1 to 100, while those playing for India can only pick from limited options.

“At present, 60-odd numbers are designated to the regulars in the Indian team and those in contention. So even if a player is out of the team for about a year or so, we don’t give away his number to a new player. That means a recent debutant has just 30-odd numbers to choose from,” the BCCI official added.

Meanwhile, when the 21-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal was about to make his India debut, he chose Number 19 for his India jersey – the same number he used to don while playing for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. However, because cricketer-turned-commentator Dinesh Karthik was designated Number 19, Jaiswal had to pick an alternate number (64).

On the junior level (during the U-19 days), the young Shubman Gill wanted the Number 7 jersey, but because MS Dhoni had already been designated the same number jersey, Gill chose Number 77. Even after getting promoted to the senior side (Indian Team), Gill continues to don the Number 77 jersey.

In 2017, India seam-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur took the field wearing the Number 10 jersey – and got trolled on social media, with the “Trying to be Sachin” hashtag trending in India. The BCCI had to intervene and thus retired the Number 10 jersey in honour of Sachin Tendulkar. Shardul chose Number 54 as his jersey number.

With two top players, Virat Kohli (18) and Rohit Sharma (45) around, the BCCI might also retire their jersey numbers following their retirement from international cricket.

From Border-Gavaskar Trophy win to near-perfect ODI World Cup campaign: Team India's run in 2023

On Wednesday (Dec 13), Rohit Sharma broke his silence on Team India's ODI World Cup final loss, where they went down to Australia by six wickets in Ahmedabad on Nov 19. Being on a 10-match winning streak, hosts India entered the 10-team competition's finale as the red-hot favourites but lost to Pat Cummins-led Aussies.

Being asked to bat first at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, Rohit & Co. only managed 240 for 9 before Travis Head's 137 and Marnus Labuschagne's 58 not-out guided Australia to their sixth ODI WC triumph overall.

After the heartbreaking loss, the majority of the Indian cricketers have stayed away from international cricket to revamp and return to the field. Before Rohit's return to the 22-yard cricket strip, during the forthcoming two Tests versus South Africa in the African nation, the Indian captain shared an emotional message acknowledging the fan support.

He further shared the challenges and emotions experienced during the entire tournament and how everyone's pure love has motivated him to keep going ahead.

'I feel for all of them. They all, along with us, were dreaming of lifting that World Cup'

Rohit said in a video shared on Instagram, "After the final, it was very hard to get back and start moving on, which is why I decided that I need to get my mind out of this. But then, wherever I was, I realised that people were coming up to me and they were appreciating everyone’s effort, and how well we played. I feel for all of them. They all, along with us, were dreaming of lifting that World Cup, along with us."

He further opined, “Everywhere we went during this entire campaign, there was so much support from everyone who came to the stadium firstly and people who were watching it from home as well. I want to appreciate what the people have done for us, in that one and half month period. But again, if I think more and more about that I feel quite disappointed that we were not able to go all the way.”

“For me to see, you know, people coming up to me, telling me that they were proud of the team, you know made me feel good. Along with them, I was healing as well. I felt, okay these are the kind of things you want to hear,” Rohit mentioned.

'Seeing everyone's pure love motivates you to look for another ultimate prize'

Hitman then stated, “People, when they understand what the player must be going through and when they know these kinds of things and not to bring out that frustration, that anger, it means a lot for us, me it meant a lot because there was no anger, it was just pure love from people that I met and it was wonderful to see that. So it gives you motivation to get back and start working again and look for another ultimate prize.”

“I’ve always grown up watching the 50-over World Cup. To me, that was the ultimate prize, the 50-over World Cup. We’ve worked all these years, for that World Cup. And it is disappointing, right? If you don’t get through it, don’t get what you want, what you’ve been looking for all this while, what you were dreaming of. You get disappointed. You get frustrated as well at times,” Rohit added during the chat.

At present, Rohit is gearing up for India's upcoming two Tests versus South Africa, starting on Dec 26. He is expected to lead India in the 2024 T20 World Cup, in West Indies and USA, which will kick off in early June. However, nothing is official regarding his T20I comeback. He last played in the format during India's semi-final defeat in the 2022 T20 World Cup, to eventual winners England.

On Wednesday (Dec 13), Rohit Sharma broke his silence on Team India's ODI World Cup final loss, where they went down to Australia by six wickets in Ahmedabad on Nov 19. Being on a ten-match winning streak, hosts India entered the ten-team competition's finale as the favourites but lost to Pat Cummins-led Aussies. Being asked to bat first at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, Rohit & Co. only managed 240 for 9 before Travis Head's 137 and Marnus Labuschagne's 58 not out guided Australia to their sixth ODI WC triumph overall. After the heartbreaking loss, a majority of Indian cricketers have stayed away from international cricket to revamp and return to the field. Before Rohit's return to the 22-yard cricket strip during the forthcoming two Tests versus South Africa in the African nation, the Indian captain shared an emotional message acknowledging the fan support, sharing the challenges and emotions experienced during the entire tournament and how everyone's pure love has motivated him going ahead. "I feel for all of them," says Rohit Rohit said in a video shared on Instagram, "After the final, it was very hard to get back and start moving on, which is why I decided that I need to get my mind out of this. But then, wherever I was, I realised that people were coming up to me and they were appreciating everyone’s effort, how well we played. I feel for all of them. They all, along with us, were dreaming of lifting that World Cup, along with us." He further opined, “Everywhere we went during this entire campaign, there was so much support from everyone who came to the stadium firstly and people who were watching it from home as well. I want to appreciate what the people have done for us, in that one and half month period. But again, if I think more and more about that I feel quite disappointed that we were not able to go all the way.” “For me to see, you know, people coming up to me, telling me that they were proud of the team, you know made me feel good. Along with them, I was healing as well. I felt, okay these are the kind of things you want to hear,” Rohit mentioned. Crowds gather in long queues to meet World Cup hero Mohammed Shami – WATCH

Two of India’s star players, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, are mentioned in the same breath on ability parameters, if not on the same fitness levels. Breaking the ice around this notion, the Indian Team’s strength and conditioning coach, Ankit Kaliyar, had an astonishing revelation about the current India captain. Ankit said though Rohit appears to be bulkier than Virat, he is among the fittest cricketers around.

The coach said Rohit is as fit a cricketer on the field as anyone in the team, with his mobility and agility working as standout traits.

Little Master Sunil Gavaskar lauded youngster Rinku Singh ahead of the start of India's all-format tour of South Africa. Gavaskar feels Rinku has grabbed the opportunities that came his way in the Indian Premier League (IPL), playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and the 26-year-old has done reasonably well in the limited chances given in T20Is. Ahead of Suryakumar Yadav-led India's three T20Is versus South Africa, in the African nation, Gavaskar stated that Rinku is being looked up on as the next 'Yuvraj Singh' and expectations are sky high from the left-hander.

Gavaskar hailed Rinku's self-belief while talking on Star Sports and said, "Talent - it's not given to everybody. You can love the game. You can play all day, but sometimes you know you might not quite have the talent, but he has the belief that he could do it, and that's what he's done over the last 2-3 years. Again here in the IPL, he was in and out of a lot of teams when he finally got the opportunity and the way he grabbed it (was amazing)."

Former India teammates Gautam Gambhir and S Sreesanth got involved in a heated exchange during the Legends League Cricket (LLC) 2023 Eliminator between India Capitals and Gujarat Giants at the Lalabhai Contractor Stadium, Surat on Wednesday (Dec 6).

The incident took place during the second over of the match when Gambhir smacked the pacer for a six and a four. After the next ball was hit to the fielder for no run, tempers flared between the duo. After the match, Sreesanth shared a video that went viral on social media where he dwelled into the whole face-off and levied some serious allegations against Gambhir. It is to be noted that Sreesanth did not reveal the exact details of the 'rude' things Gambhir said, however, he has promised to reveal them soon. The former Indian speedster maintained that Gambhir's actions were uncalled for and without any provocation from his end. Sreesanth said in a video posted on his Instagram handle, "Just wanted to clear the air with what happened with Mr. Fighter. One who always fights with all his colleagues. For no reason whatsoever. He does not even respect his senior players, including Viru bhai. That's exactly what happened today. Without any provocation, he just kept on calling me something which was very rude which shouldn't have been said by Mr. Gautam Gambhir."
The 2024 T20 World Cup is a mere seven months away, and the BCCI and its selection committee are busy pulling their socks up to put forward the best squad for the marquee event. While the onus would again be on picking the right team for the format, the selection committee is said to have bigger problems to deal with, and Virat Kohli's selection for the marquee event is one of them.

Following the 2022 T20 World Cup semis loss at the hands of England, India's T20I side underwent gigantic changes. While several seniors decided against playing the T20Is in the past year for reasons known to them, the selectors went all out in picking and backing youngsters for the 20-team tournament next year.

Considering the packed FTP schedule, India will play only six T20Is (thus far) in the lead-up to the 2024 T20 World Cup - three against South Africa, starting on Sunday (Dec 10) and as many against Afghanistan at home early next year. With Rohit and Virat requesting to skip the white-ball leg, the BCCI selectors have just a handful of matches to finalise a tentative 15 for the tournament, scheduled in the West Indies and the USA in June 2024.

As per the latest reports, the BCCI office bearers, including Secretary Jay Shah, Vice President Rajeev Shukla and Treasurer Ashish Shelar, alongside the selectors, have zeroed in on Rohit and Bumrah as sure-starters, with veteran batter set to continue leading India in the shortest format at least until then.

Selectors keen on playing Ishan Kishan ahead of Virat Kohli at number 3 in 2024 T20 World Cup - Reports

Cricket's greatest batter, Sachin Tendulkar, retired with 100 international centuries in his name. His successor and another modern-day veteran, Virat Kohli, has come close to breaking his record, having notched up his 50th in ODIs and 80th overall during the recently concluded 2023 World Cup. Brian Lara had his say on whether Virat could go past Sachin's unparalleled hundreds tally.

Virat, 35, is perhaps the fittest cricketer around, and with the form that he is in, he can play at the top of his game for another 2-3 years. Lara said although Kohli (if he remains fit) can play for another 4-5 years, he refrained from committing that the India great will surpass Sachin's 100 international hundred tally, saying that goal is tougher to achieve than what it appears.

"How old is Kohli now? 35, right? He has 80 but still needs 20. If he scores five centuries every year he'd need four more years to equal Tendulkar. Kohli will be 39 then. Tough job, very tough job," Lara told Anandabazar Patrika.

Lara said that given how consistent one has to be to reach the milestone that legendary Sachin had set, scoring 20 centuries for a player who will age with each passing day appears to be a far-fetched dream.
"Can't say with certainty, no one can. Those saying Kohli will break Tendulkar's 100-centuries record won't be taking cricketing logic into account. 20 centuries seem a long way away.
“Age doesn't stop for anyone. Kohli will break many more records, but 100 centuries seems the most difficult one. My best wishes are with him.
Virat to return during SA Tests

With India's white-ball leg against South Africa about to get underway, commencing with the first T20I in Durban on Sunday (Dec 10), the selectors had rested CWC-bound star players, including Kohli for the three T20Is and as many ODIs.

The BCCI top officials recently met India head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma and the selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, in a marathon meeting held in New Delhi. The meeting was to review the ODI World Cup at home -- where India ended as runners-up, losing to Australia in the final. The squads for the all-format tour of South Africa were also announced. Further, the roadmap going ahead was discussed, with the main focus on the next ICC event; i.e. the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA.

Reportedly, a BCCI official present in the meeting narrated the entire conversation between Rohit and the others, as reported by Dainik Jagran. It is understood that Hitman asked for clarity regarding his T20I career. He asked the officials and selectors if they saw him playing in the forthcoming T20 WC in June.

"If you want to select me for the T20 World Cup then tell me now how to go about it," asked Rohit, according to the official, as reported by the Hindi daily.

It is to be noted that the likes of Rohit and Virat Kohli have not featured in India's T20I setup post the national side's 2022 T20 WC semi-final loss to eventual winners England, in Adelaide. Since then, the two have focused on the longer formats due to the WTC 2023 final, held in June, and the ODI WC at home. In Rohit's absence, Hardik Pandya led the T20I side before Suryakumar Yadav took over in the latter's absence due to injury, during the recently-concluded Australia series at home (which Men in Blue won 4-1).

Since Hardik was never announced as the T20I captain, doors were always open for Rohit. Eyes on Mohammed Shami’s troubled ankle as India set to leave for South Africa tour

India's ace all-rounder Hardik Pandya continues to recover from the ankle injury he suffered during the Bangladesh game in the 2023 World Cup. India might have benefited from his absence, with Mohammed Shami coming in and making all the difference till the final; but the hosts missed Pandya’s cool approach on the big day when Australia walked away with their sixth world title.

Having recovered from a back injury earlier, Pandya suffered an unfortunate injury during the marquee event, ruling him out for an indefinite period.

Now, with an eye on the upcoming ICC events, with the T20 World Cup in sight (June 2024), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) have penned an 18-week high-performance programme for Pandya, with the sole purpose of working on how his body reacts to different fitness regimes.

“We speak of workload management. This is precisely what it is all about. Is there a doubt on his ability as a T20 cricketer? No. What we rather need is setting long-term goals and ensuring endurance levels remain up to the mark,” said those privy to the information.

“First, let’s be clear. Pandya’s earlier injury (back) was completely different from the freak injury, or say ‘accident’ he suffered during the Bangladesh game in Pune. There is no relation between the two, and it would be unfair to say he wasn’t in top shape for the World Cup or to suggest that he is injury-prone.”

“He made a successful comeback from the back injury, has been in superb shape, and it was just an unfortunate incident,” the source added.

Not for the first time

Besides Pandya, other senior players like Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul had also undergone similar programmes in the past, with everyone returning from lengthy injury layoffs earlier this year.

Sourav Ganguly recalled Virat Kohli's infamous resignation as India captain in late 2021. Kohli announced his resignation as the T20I captain before the start of the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE. Soon after the World Cup, he was sacked as the ODI captain and after the end of the India-South Africa Tests, which concluded in early 2022 in the African nation, Kohli stepped down as the Test captain as well, bringing curtains to his captaincy tenure. Back then, Ganguly was also criticised by many for playing a role in Kohli's resignation as he was serving as the BCCI chief.

Now, Ganguly has recalled the entire controversy and stated that he didn't play any role in Kohli leaving captaincy altogether. The former Indian captain said that he just asked Kohli to step down as the white-ball skipper after the latter had announced his resignation from T20Is.

"I didn't remove Virat from captaincy. I have told this a lot of times. He was not interested to lead in T20Is. So, after he made that decision, I told him, if you're not interested to lead in T20Is, it's better if you step down from entire white-ball cricket. Let there be a white-ball captain and a red-ball captain," Ganguly said on Dadagiri Unlimited Season 10, a reality show.

In addition, Ganguly revealed he had to push Rohit Sharma to take over as the all-format captain after Kohli's resignation in January 2022. "I pushed Rohit Sharma a bit to take up the captaincy role because he wasn't interested to lead in all three formats of the game. So, maybe I have a bit of contribution in that but no matter who is administrating, it's the players who perform well on the field. I was appointed as the President of BCCI to work for the betterment of Indian cricket, this is a small part of it," he added.

“We have played in the U-19 World Cup; we knew each other. It was my comeback series, and I was playing against India for the first time. I got Kohli in the first match, and he told me it would not happen again. I got him again in the second and third match."

"Before the third ODI at the breakfast table, I told him ‘Virat you will not be spared today.’ Younis Khan was also there. He said get him out again today. Younis bhai took Virat’s catch,” Junaid revealed during the discussion.

When asked about his opinion on the best Indian batter of the two – Sachin or Virat, Junaid named current captain Rohit Sharma, saying the veteran star has more shots in his kitty than Kohli and Sachin.

“In my opinion, Rohit Sharma is a better batsman than Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli,” Junaid said.
Junaid added because Rohit has more double hundreds in ODIs in comparison to others and is also the batter with the most sixes in the One-Dayers, he is ahead of the two.

“Everybody calls Rohit ‘The Hitman.’ He has scored an incredible 264. He has also smashed a couple of double-hundreds in the ODIs. This is rare because he has done it more than once. He has also hit the most number of sixes. That’s why I would vote for Rohit,” Junaid added.

Former Pakistan seamer Junaid Khan recalled playing against India great Virat Kohli. While Junaid expressed his utmost respect for the batter and cricketer that Kohli has emerged, the left-handed pacer still cherishes every time he dismissed Kohli in limited meetings, adding people haven’t forgotten that either.

During India-Pakistan's last bilateral series in 2012/13, Junaid dismissed Virat on all three occasions. In the first ODI in Chennai, where he cleaned up his off-stump, Junaid picked Kohli caught behind in the second ODI in Kolkata. Their premier pacer back then, Junaid, recalled an instance of warning Kohli ahead of the final ODI in Delhi, where also he got rid of him. “We have played in the U-19 World Cup; we knew each other. It was my comeback series, and I was playing against India for the first time. I got Kohli in the first match, and he told me it would not happen again. I got him again in the second and third match." "Before the third ODI at the breakfast table, I told him ‘Virat you will not be spared today.’ Younis Khan was also there. He said get him out again today. Younis bhai took Virat’s catch,” Junaid revealed during the discussion. I will make my son follow Kohli's footsteps: Brian Lara heaps praise on India batting great

Former India captain and BCCI boss Sourav Ganguly has backed leader Rohit Sharma to continue captaining India across formats till the 2024 T20 World Cup. While the Indian board was contemplating taking a call on Rohit's white-ball future as a skipper post the World Cup final, the latest reports suggest the BCCI plans to back the veteran batter to continue leading till next year's 20-team tournament, to be hosted by West Indies and the USA in June.

Ganguly believes Rohit is the right man to lead India in another World Cup, having fared exceptionally well in the marquee events earlier.

“Rohit Sharma should be the captain of India because he's done so well in the World Cup. He's a leader. So I expect, and I presume, that he will continue as captain till the T20 World Cup," Ganguly was quoted as saying to the reporters.

India are set to tour South Africa for an all-format tour, starting on Dec 10. The tour comprises three T20Is and ODIs each and will end with a two-match Test series, early next year. Ahead of the announcement of the squads for the upcoming SA tour, reports have emerged that Suryakumar Yadav is a frontrunner to lead India in T20Is in the African nation. At present, Surya is leading a second-stringed Indian team in the five T20Is versus Australia at home, with the hosts leading 2-1 after three games.

As per a report filed by news agency PTI, Surya is emerging as the top candidate to take charge of the T20I side during the forthcoming tour amid uncertainty over Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya's absence due to injury.
