Former BCCI president and India captain Sourav Ganguly is surprised with top-tier players, mainly Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan, for skipping Ranji Trophy matches. As a result, the BCCI released them from the central contract list for the upcoming season.

Ganguly said everyone is supposed to play in the Ranji Trophy, including the centrally contracted players not picked for any Indian squad.

The latest reports emerging from the Indian cricket board present a gloomy picture for Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. Away from on-field cricket citing respective reasons, the batting duo is said to be facing an axe from BCCI’s central contract list for the upcoming season over skipping Ranji Trophy matches despite strict directives from the board.

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly feels the right choice has been made with Rohit Sharma to lead India in the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024 edition in West Indies and USA.
Speaking to Mid Day, Ganguly -- who also served as the BCCI chief -- said, "Rohit Sharma is the right choice as India captain for the T20 World Cup. The way he led the Indian team and won 10 matches in the 50-over World Cup is still fresh in our memory. So, Rohit was the best choice."

Manoj Tiwary recently announced his retirement from cricket. Being a big name for the Bengal state team, Tiwary also represented India in 12 ODIs and three T20Is. He announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in August 2023. However, he reversed his decision to play for Bengal in the 2023/24 Ranji Trophy season. Now, he has stepped aside completely and revealed his biggest regret of not representing India in Tests.

Tiwary never found himself as a more permanent member of Team India. Debuting in 2008, the right-hander played his last ODI for India in 2015 and his final T20Is in 2012 but never wore the Test cap.
Rohit Sharma will continue to lead India at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA (in June), BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed on the eve of the third India-England Test in Rajkot. Shah said Rohit has everyone's backing within the dressing room and the board, adding future captain Hardik Pandya will be his deputy in this tournament.

After replacing Virat Kohli as the all-format skipper in late 2021, Rohit captained Team India at the 2022 T20 WC in Australia, where they lost to England by ten wickets in the semis. Under his leadership, India played the World Test Championship (WTC) and the 2023 World Cup final (at home), losing to Australia on both occasions.

Rohit remained unavailable for selection in the T20Is since the Adelaide semis loss, only to return during the Afghanistan T20Is earlier this year. Rohit’s selection in that series indicated who will lead India in the marquee event later in the year.

Ahead of the third Test versus England, former Indian pacer RP Singh opened up on captain Rohit Sharma's form struggles. In the first two Tests, Rohit failed to get a big score and could not even cross the 50-run mark in four outings. After the opening two games, he has scores of 24, 39, 14 and 13. Thus, Singh opined on Rohit's struggles and feels the Indian captain is 'overthinking' and being 'over cautious'.

Talking on Cricbuzz, Singh stated, "Rohit Sharma is overthinking. He's thinking about playing a big knock, build at least two-three partnerships in the absence of other main players to take the innings forward. He's being over-cautious in trying to do that. He's not that kind of a player. His style is different. He is a free-flowing batter and that is missing. He can play his shots. An over-cautious Rohit is not good both as a batter and as a person."

Dhoni ended his international career as one of the greats of the game, known for his captaincy, keeping and finishing skills along with several good performances with the bat in Tests and ODIs. Talking about his wicketkeeping, he ended with 256 catches and 38 stumpings in Tests, 321 catches and 123 stumpings in ODIs, and claimed 57 catches along with 34 stumpings in T20Is.
India batter KL Rahul is ruled out of the third Test against England in Rajkot, while Ravindra Jadeja is declared fit to take the field in the next game. The BCCI, while announcing the squad for the remaining three Tests, announced that Jadeja and Rahul’s selection will depend on their fitness status. As per the latest reports, Rahul hasn’t recovered from the quadriceps injury and is at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The BCCI has named Devdutt Padikkal as his replacement.

Injury to Rahul means India will be without their three most experienced batters in the middle order, including Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer.
Bengal seamer Akash Deep was surprised to receive his maiden India Test call-up for the remaining three matches against England.
Another injury scare hits the Indian camp, with latest reports suggesting batter Shreyas Iyer picking up the ever-troubling back injury, casting doubts over his participation in the third England Test in Rajkot. Per the sources (in MCA) close to the information, Iyer has complained of back stiffness ahead of the third Test starting on February 15.

The reports suggest the National Cricket Academy (NCA) has written to the BCCI about Iyer’s fitness status. Though the selectors are yet to meet for squad announcement for the remaining three Tests, Iyer’s absence is said to be a certainty. With veteran batter Virat Kohli already deemed unavailable (for at least the next two Tests) for personal reasons, not having Iyer in the middle order could worry Rohit and the Indian camp.

Earlier, Cricbuzz first reported that Vizag Test hero Jasprit Bumrah, who picked nine wickets across two outings, including a six-wicket haul in the first innings, will be rested for the third game to manage his workload.
Iyer was instrumental in helping India win the six-team tournament co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and later, with his crucial knocks in the group stages, guided India to the 2023 World Cup final, wherein they lost to Australia by six wickets.

Iyer didn’t play the IPL and the World Test Championship final in 2023 and only returned to the scheme of things in August ahead of the Asia Cup. ALSO READ: 'Not True...': AB De Villiers makes U-turn from statement on Virat Kohli's absence Iyer was instrumental in helping India win the six-team tournament co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and later, with his crucial knocks in the group stages, guided India to the 2023 World Cup final, wherein they lost to Australia by six wickets. Considering the situation with star players missing from the middle order, India will play KL Rahul at number four and continue to back Rajat Patidar to take up the next spot in the batting order. Although keeper-batter KS Bharat is going through a rough patch with the bat in hand, head coach Rahul Dravid has vowed to trust him to come good in the remaining matches. Contrary to this notion around him, India might play Dhruv Jurel in Bharat’s place for the Rajkot Test. In two matches thus far, Iyer has scored 104 runs at an average of 26.

Virat Kohli is on a break from international cricket and has not featured in India's ongoing five-match Test series versus England, at home. Kohli left the squad prior to the first Test, in Hyderabad, citing personal reasons and still not much is known regarding his absence and possible return for the final three Tests. Amidst all this, former South Africa captain and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) star AB de Villiers was asked about Kohli's absence.

On his YouTube channel, De Villiers said that Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma are expecting their second child. "All I know is he is fine. He is spending a bit of time with his family, that is the reason he is missing the first two Test matches. I am not going to confirm anything else. I cannot wait to see him back. He is fine, he is happy," revealed De Villiers on his YouTube channel.

He opined, "Let me just see what he said. I just want to at least give you a little bit of love. So I wrote to him 'Been wanting to check in with you for a while now biscuits. How are you?'. He said 'Just need to be with my family right now'. Then I said I am doing well."

"Yes, his second child is on the way. Yes, it's family time and things are important to him. If you are not true and genuine to yourself, you lose track of what you are here for. I think most people's priority is family. You can't judge Virat for that. Yes, we miss him, but he has made the right decision," ABD added.

'Not True...': AB De Villiers makes U-turn from statement on Virat Kohli's absence

India keeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been away from cricket since December last year, citing mental fatigue, and head coach Rahul Dravid says it’s Kishan’s choice on when to return to playing for India. After India’s comeback win (by 106 runs) in the Vizag Test, Dravid touched upon Kishan’s absence, saying the team management is not forcing anyone on any grounds and is happy playing the waiting game here.

Ishan Kishan last featured for India in the home Australia T20Is (after the World Cup) before getting picked for the South Africa series (in Dec 2023), wherein he didn’t play any game, and subsequently asked the BCCI not to consider him for selection.

For the record, Kishan also decided against featuring in the Ranji Trophy.

“We were happy to give him the break and whenever he was ready… I didn't say he has to play domestic cricket. I said, whenever he's ready he needs to play some cricket and come back, and the choice is his," Dravid added.

IND vs ENG: ‘Happiest moment for me’ – Likely debutant Rajat Patidar opens up on maiden Test call-up

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has made a bold claim. Ahead of the second Test between India and England, which gets underway on Friday (Feb 2) in Visakhapatnam, Vaughan stated that India missed Virat Kohli's presence in the series opener, in Hyderabad, and would not have lost the Test under his captaincy. Rohit Sharma-led India lost the Hyderabad Test by 28 runs, failing to chase down 231, despite taking a whopping 190-run lead. Ben Stokes & Co. rode on Ollie Pope's 196 in their second essay and debutant Tom Hartley's 7 for 62 in India's run-chase to win the game.

Vaughan opened up on the Hyderabad loss for India on the Club Prairie Fire show. He stated, "They miss Virat Kohli's captaincy massively in Test cricket. Under Virat's captaincy that week, India wouldn't have lost the game." He added, "Rohit is a legend and a great player. But I felt he just switched off completely."

It is to be noted that this was the first time that India lost a Test match at home after taking a 100-plus lead in the first innings. Talking about Kohli's captaincy, no opposition team scored more than 400 runs in their second innings in a Test in India during his tenure. When Kohli was the Indian Test captain, India only lost two out of 31 Tests at home. On the other hand, Rohit has already lost two out of the seven Tests as captain at home. In addition, India are winless at home in three Tests at a stretch for the first time in 12 Tests.

Thus, Rohit's Test captaincy is under the scanner at the moment. He is not going to have it easy in the ongoing five Tests versus England, who are all charged up after the Hyderabad win. Ahead of the second Test, India were dealt twin blows as Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul were ruled out with injury concerns. Moreover, Kohli will only return in the third Test.

But I felt he just switched off completely." Also read: Rohit Sharma is past his best, India are due a series defeat at home: England great Geoffrey Boycott It is to be noted that this was the first time that India lost a Test match at home after taking a 100-plus lead in the first innings. Trailing 0-1, India have their task cut out in the upcoming Vizag Test. India squad for 2nd Test vs England Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, KS Bharat (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Mayank Agarwal suffers major health scare, rushed to ICU in Agartala - Reports

Rohit Sharma-led India lost the first Test, of the five-match series, to England by 28 runs in Hyderabad despite taking a whopping 190-run lead. Ollie Pope (196) revived England's hopes in the second essay as they set a tricky 231-run target for the home side, who got bundled out for 202 to lose in the last over of the fourth and penultimate day. After their shocking loss, India have plenty to ponder upon before the second Test in Visakhapatnam. Ahead of the Vizag Test, former Indian spinner and coach Anil Kumble opined on India's potential XI and called for Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion.

With Ravindra Jadeja injured, as well as KL Rahul, there will be a couple of changes in India's XI for the second Test starting on Friday (Feb 2). Kumble feels Kuldeep can be drafted in especially if India feel the need to play only a solitary pacer.

Speaking on JioCinema, Kumble stated, "I am not really sure whether you need a fourth spinner. But if India feels that they need only one fast bowler then having Kuldeep will certainly help. He will have variations but England will come and do the same things they did in Hyderabad. The wicket could be a turning one and we are expecting the pace to be quicker than this."

Ind vs Afg: 'If he has higher win percentage than Dhoni & Kohli, then...' - Gavaskar hails captain Rohit

India beat Afghanistan in a high-scoring thriller in the third and final T20I, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, on Wednesday (Jan 17). After an unassailable 2-0 lead, India made some changes in their playing XI and opted to bat first. The match went into the Super Over after both sides ended with 212 apiece, with Indian captain Rohit Sharma ending with a score of 121 not out. After the first Super Over also didn't separate both sides, it went into the second Super Over where India won to inflict a series whitewash.

In the first Super Over, both ended with 16 runs each whereas India set a 12-run target for Afghanistan in the second Super Over and defended it with Ravi Bishnoi striking twice in his first three deliveries. Many hailed Rohit for trusting leg spinner Bishnoi to bowl against the Afghan big-hitters. After the match, head coach Rahul Dravid lauded Rohit for making a 'great call' to bring in Bishnoi.

After the match, Dravid said, as quoted by Cricbuzz, "I think Rohit went with his gut, he went with a call... I think he felt that the spinner had a better chance to take those two wickets. It was one of games when 11 wasn't probably a huge score and where you know that if they batted those six balls, with the power they had, they probably would've got the 12 runs. You needed to take two wickets."

Dravid added, "I think it was a great call from the skipper to go with the spinner. He could've gone for two sixes but I thought Bishnoi was brilliant, because he bowled two superb balls. I think it was really good gut call from Rohit to go for the wickets and be more positive rather than probably a safer option which people would've expected."

Great call from Rohit Sharma to go with Bishnoi in second Super Over: Rahul Dravid lauds Team India captain

Even if Rohit Sharma’s record-breaking fifth T20I hundred against Afghanistan wasn’t enough to make headlines, two Super Overs to conclude a thriller in Bengaluru, including questions around how Rohit batted thrice in the game (one during India inning and twice during two Super Overs) did the job. Here, we will look into what the rule book says, understanding what happened on the field during the longest-recorded T20I game ever.

After India got reduced to 22 for four at one stage, Captain Rohit and batter Rinku Singh bailed the team out with a 190-run-stand for the fifth wicket, helping the hosts post a whopping 212 for four batting first. While Rinku looked in his element with his unbeaten 39-ball 69, Rohit hogged all the limelight, slamming 121 off 69 balls, hitting eight sixes and eleven fours.

With the game getting tied, thanks to fifties from Afghanistan’s top three, the match went into the Super Over, with them batting first per the norms. The visiting team hit 17 off six balls, leaving India with a daunting total of 18 to chase. Rohit Sharma joined Yashasvi Jaiswal in the middle, with Rohit smashing twin sixes, resulting in India equalling Afghanistan’s total.

The match, for the first time in international cricket, proceeded towards the second Super Over, with the rule book saying a batter dismissed once cannot come to bat again in the following Super Over. However, Rohit, much like how Ravi Ashwin (playing for Rajasthan Royals) retired out (tactically) during IPL 2022, did the same, asking ‘quicker runner between the wickets – Rinku to replace him before the last ball of the first Super Over.

That move paid dividends as India managed a single off the final delivery (needing two) off Jaiswal, with the game going into the second Super Over, where they eventually won by ten runs.

Were umpires right to allow Rohit to bat again in the second Super Over?

The cricket fans were left wondering if the on-field umpires were correct in allowing Rohit to bat again during the second Super Over. Per the rule book, a batter cannot come again and bat if he got out; however, with Rohit remaining not out till the end (in the first Super Over), the officials allowed him to bat again in the next.

According to the ICC's playing conditions for Men's T20Is, "any batsman dismissed in any previous Super Over shall be ineligible to bat in any subsequent Super Over."

Although the on-field or even the third umpire is yet to come up with an official statement as to how Rohit batted twice during the double Super-Over drama, India coach Rahul Dravid admitted Rinku replacing Rohit was a tactical decision, suggesting Rohit retired out.

Dravid said that the ‘last-minute call’ was impressive, on the same lines as that of Ravi Ashwin’s (during the IPL).

"Taking himself out was Ashwin-level thinking," Dravid said when asked about Rohit's Super-Over swap (with Rinku).

Trott unaware of the rule

Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott admitted being unaware of the rule about the same batter being allowed to bat (irrespective of him declaring himself retired out or retired not out).

"I have no idea," Trott said after the match.

"Has there ever been two Super Overs? That's what I am trying to say. It's sort of like a new... we keep setting these new sort of rules. What I am trying to say is we kept testing the rules, we kept testing the guidelines,” he said.

According to the ICC's playing conditions for Men's T20Is, "any batsman dismissed in any previous Super Over shall be ineligible to bat in any subsequent Super Over." Although the on-field or even the third umpire is yet to come up with an official statement as to how Rohit batted twice during the double Super-Over drama, India coach Rahul Dravid admitted Rinku replacing Rohit was a tactical decision, suggesting Rohit retired out. "Taking himself out was Ashwin-level thinking," Dravid said when asked about Rohit's Super-Over swap (with Rinku). Trott unaware of the rule Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott admitted being unaware of the rule about the same batter being allowed to bat (irrespective of him declaring himself retired out or retired not out). "I have no idea," Trott said after the match. "Has there ever been two Super Overs? That's what I am trying to say. It's sort of like a new... we keep setting these new sort of rules. What I am trying to say is we kept testing the rules, we kept testing the guidelines,” he said.
