India’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad selection date is nearing, and everyone, from fans to former cricketers – Irfan Pathan and Ambati Rayudu, is busy naming their final 15 for the marquee event starting June 1. While the onus remains on picking the most balanced yet attacking squad, Pathan and Rayudu have had their say on Hardik Pandya’s selection in the Indian Team.

Speaking of Irfan Pathan’s final 15 for the 20-team tournament in the Caribbean and the USA, Pandya finds a place in the team, but under one condition - he will have to contribute with his bowling.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the newly-appointed Mumbai Indians skipper has had a torrid run as a player and captain in IPL 2024 since taking over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma. In eight contested matches, Pandya has scored just 151 runs at 142.45 and picked&nbsp;mere four wickets in 17 overs bowled across all games. His economy over ten (10.94) hasn’t helped the cause either, as Mumbai continues to struggle on the points table, with three wins and five losses thus far.

While Irfan picked just one keeper in Rishabh Pant, with Sanju Samson ahead of KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik in the pecking order (as an option), Pathan named CSK star performer Shivam Dube as a spare all-rounder. Opting against naming both spin-bowling all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, Pathan’s final 15 include just three seamers, with Kuldeep Yadav playing as the lone spinner.&nbsp;

After naming his first 13, Pathan picked four players with two leg-spinners and two top-order batters as options to name from.

Pathan's co-panel expert at Star Sports for IPL 2024, Ambati Rayudu, has some surprising inclusions in his final 15 for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Apart from the regular first-team players Rohit, Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Bumrah, Rayudu’s XI includes only two all-rounders – Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja.&nbsp;

Rayudu has opted against naming Hardik Pandya in his final squad but picked two uncapped players in Riyan Parag and this year’s find-of-the-season Mayank Yadav.&nbsp;

While both Pathan and Rayudu have named an almost similar pace attack, including Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh, Rayudu went ahead with Yuzvendra Chahal as Kuldeep’s partner at the 20-team-tournament.

2024 T20 World Cup: Pandya’s selection in question as Rayudu, Irfan pick their 15-man India squads

Impressed by the superlative returns from 42-year-old MS Dhoni at the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season, former Indian cricketers Irfan Pathan and Varun Aaron have kickstarted the discussion about including the veteran leader in the T20 squad for the World Cup.

The Indian team desperately needs someone who can score big runs in the death overs and not many have been better at doing that than Dhoni. "We could see a wildcard entry in India's T20 World Cup squad… MS Dhoni," Aaron said on Star Sports, labelling the suggestion as "the wildest card." Pathan, part of the winning 2007 WC squad, echoed Aaron's statement and added: "If he says he wants to play the T20 World Cup, no one will deny him that chance...no one will mind, no one will have a problem with it. The guy is batting so well." Though both the ex-pros made the statement in zest, there is no indication that Dhoni will return to the international arena. The former Indian captain retired from international cricket after the 2019 World Cup and has been happy playing for his beloved Chennai Super Kings (CSK), once a year for a two-month period. Also read | IPL 2024: Marcus Stoinis reveals mantra given by MS Dhoni he used to annihilate CSK Dhoni to un-retire himself? After winning the title with CSK last year, there were speculations that Dhoni was about to hang his boots in the franchise tournament as well. However, upon being quizzed about his future after the final, Dhoni said he wanted to come back for the fans one more time. “Circumstantially if you see, this is the best time to announce my retirement. But the amount of love and affection I have been shown wherever I have been this year, the easy thing would be for me to say "Thank you very much", but the tough thing for me is to work hard for another nine months and come back and play at least one more season of IPL," Dhoni said at the time. Consequently, Dhoni underwent a knee surgery and a significant rehabilitation process to be ready for the 2024 season. Despite playing no professional cricket since last year, Dhoni has been one of the most dangerous death-over batters in the league, which has led to suggestions that he un-retire himself for the WC. India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad is expected to be out later this month. All the participating teams have to share their provisional squad by early May. Currently, the likes of Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya are being touted to perform the finishing duties by the team management. (With inputs from agencies)

‘A wildcard entry’: Former Indian cricketers want MS Dhoni in India T20 World Cup squad

The 2024 T20 World Cup squad selection announcement is just around the corner, and BCCI selectors are not taking ‘surprise picks’ as an option, as per the latest reports. Although Virat Kohli’s selection is imminent despite several media reports of decision-makers being unhappy with his strike rate, mainly against the spinners outside of the Powerplay, the Ajit Agarkar-led committee also focusses on bringing Rishabh Pant back on the board.

The Indian captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid and chief selector Agarkar are said to meet on April 27 in New Delhi to finalise the 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup in June in the Caribbean and the USA.

As per the latest reports, Rohit and Kohli will be the marquee players, with the selectors also keen on putting Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill on the team sheet. Ace T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav will be on that flight for the T20 WC, accompanied by CSK’s star all-rounder Shivam Dube, KKR finisher Rinku Singh and Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya.&nbsp;

In the keeper’s category, with plenty of options, the selectors are said to be picking returning Rishabh Pant, with KL Rahul and Sanju Samson emerging as top contenders as the backup. Dinesh Karthik, who thus far has scored 251 runs at a whopping strike rate of 196.08 in eight contested games this season, falls behind KL and Sanju in the pecking order.

As for the top performers with the bat in hand, RR’s Riyan Parag and SRH opener Abhishek Sharma, both might not be considered as BCCI wants to try them first in the bilateral series.&nbsp;

<h2>No sign of Chahal</h2>

Yuzvendra Chahal – IPL’s highest wicket-taker and among the top performers this season, continues to stay on the sidelines as selectors are convinced with Kuldeep Yadav as the lone spin-bowling option. Two all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, will also be on that flight to the USA and West Indies.

While Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh will be the other bowlers. Pandya or Dube, if picked, will be the seam-bowling options for Captain Rohit.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the 20-team tournament will begin on June 1, with India placed alongside arch-rivals Pakistan in Group A. The marquee clash between two heavyweights will take place at a newly built stadium in New York on June 9. Hosts USA and their neighbours Canada are the other two teams in Group A.&nbsp;

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) Captain KL Rahul recalls his best moment with India legend MS Dhoni ahead of the LSG vs CSK tie at Ekana Stadium on Friday (April 19). Rahul, who leads the newly inducted IPL franchise, shared kind words for Dhoni, saying the former CSK skipper holds a special place in his and everyone's heart worldwide. Speaking to the broadcaster (Star Sports) in a recorded video ahead of the marquee clash, KL recalled getting all of his international caps (Tests, ODIs and T20Is) from MS Dhoni, who was the Indian captain (at that time), calling it as the special moment he shared with the veteran cricketer. "MS Dhoni is a special person for not only me but the whole country. The most special moment I shared with Dhoni was when I received caps for all the formats. I got all my Tests, one-day and T20 caps from him. He was the captain of the team, and just to receive that from his hand will be (at) top in the special moments. Then comes playing cricket with him, the wins and the losses,” said Rahul on his special moment with Dhoni. Under Dhoni’s captaincy, KL flourished across all formats, soon becoming India’s go-to-batter in Tests, ODIs and T20Is. Lucknow ready to host Chennai Two top-performing teams this season, LSG and CSK, will be up against each other at the Ekana Stadium for the quest to remain in the top four. While CSK is third on the points table, with four wins in six contested matches, LSG slipped to the sixth spot, following their eight-wicket loss at the hands of KKR in their previous game. For Chennai, the seam-bowling duo of Matheesha Pathirana and Mustafizur Rahman is the one to look out for, while the home side, LSG will bank on their settled batting order to deliver against Chennai. Moreover, all eyeballs will be on Mayank Yadav, who might return to the playing XI for this marquee clash.

India captain Rohit Sharma has debunked claims of a top-tier meeting with head coach Rahul Dravid and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar to decide on the 2024 T20 World Cup squad. Per Rohit, all three concerned names are in different parts of the world and have not spoken on this, let alone meeting. While Rohit is playing IPL 2024 for Mumbai Indians, Agarkar is said to be in Dubai, and Dravid is busy with his family in his hometown Bengaluru.

Following the England Tests at home, speculations surrounding changes in Indian cricket team are making headlines, with the T20 World Cup being the highlight. Earlier, as per several media reports, all three were said to have met to discuss the squad for the 20-team-tournament in the Caribbean and the USA starting June 1.

Reports suggested that Rohit, Dravid and Agarkar talked about Hardik Pandya's future in the white-ball side, given his exploits in the ongoing cash-rich league, wherein his lack of bowling has raised tensions for the India captain and selectors.

India men's cricket team captain Rohit Sharma is open to the idea of playing a bilateral Test series against arch-rivals Pakistan. Sharma said the series would be a closely fought affair and that he only wants to focus on cricket, not other affairs. Rohit was speaking on the "Club Prairie Fire" podcast where former England captain Michael Vaughan quizzed him on the possibility of the India-Pakistan series. "Don't you think India playing Pakistan regularly will be fantastic for Test cricket?" asked Vaughan. Rohit responded saying: "I totally believe that! They are a good team. Last test match played between India and Pakistan was way back I think in 2006 or 2008 (2007), where Wasim Jaffar got a double hundred in Kolkata." "I would love to. At the end of the day, we want to be in the contest. I think it will be a great contest between the two sides. We anyway play them in the ICC tournaments. So, it doesn't even matter. It's pure cricket that I am looking at. I am not interested in anything else. It's just pure cricket. A battle between bat and ball. It will be a great contest so why not." 'Would love to': Indian captain Rohit Sharma on playing bilateral Test series against Pakistan

Since winning the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007, the Indian Team has not been able to lift&nbsp;the trophy again. While failing to deliver on D-days is deemed one of the reasons, the selectors, on their part, failing to pick the right squad is also pointed as an excuse for India’s dry run in this tournament. However, Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has a solution.

Speaking to the media ahead of MI vs CSK’s IPL game at the Wankhede on Sunday night, Fleming, while reverting to one of the questions surrounding Shivam Dube’s chances of breaking into India's T20 WC squad, said the Indian selectors must decide on the template they want to play at the tournament and then pick the team around it.

This advice is a much-needed one for the BCCI selectors, who have a massive task of picking the best 15 for the 20-team-tournament, starting on June 1 in the Caribbean and the USA.&nbsp;

“The thing for me is, what type of game plan do they want to play during the World Cup? What have they identified as the right style of play for India in an away condition?” Fleming said.

“Then put players into that rather than just picking players and trying to find a game plan. I would be looking at the style of play that I would want, and then pick the players that are in-form and can perform the role that will best win that design,” CSK’s head coach continued.

<h2>‘Hardest job in the world’</h2>

While backing the selectors for doing the hardest job in Indian cricket to name a team worthy of lifting an ICC title, Fleming explained his reasons behind opting for Dube for the marquee event.&nbsp;

Dube has been CSK’s standout batter this season, smashing 176 runs in four matches, striking at 160.

“It’s probably one of the hardest jobs in world cricket, isn’t it, being an Indian selector? On one hand, very jealous as a New Zealander looking at the amount of talent that is on show and new players every game sort of pop up,” Fleming said.

“I love his power. I’m biased, aren’t I? But I think when you have a bit different power like that; I would have him in the side,” the head coach added.

Meanwhile, the Indian selectors are said to be naming the T20 World Cup squad by the end of April or by May’s first week.

Fleming’s advice to BCCI selectors for T20 WC squad selection - ‘Identify a template and then pick players’

India and Mumbai Indians keeper-batter Ishan Kishan opened up on taking a break from cricket and his thoughts behind bagging the spot in the squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup in June. Kishan, who slammed a brilliant 69 off 39 balls against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2024 the other night, said many things are not in his hands and that he plans to enjoy his cricket.

During the South Africa tour late last year, Ishan asked BCCI not to consider him for selection as he decided to take a break from the game for personal reasons. The left-handed batter remained away from the game until March, missing the Afghanistan T20Is and the home Test series against England. He, however, returned to play the DY Patil Cup before joining Mumbai Indians camp for IPL 2024.

This season, Ishan is Mumbai’s top run-getter thus far, with 161 runs from five games at 182.95.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, with the squad selection date for the 2024 T20 World Cup around the corner, Ishan is not worried about his selection, saying he is happy to take one game at a time, and is unwilling to overstep in a two-month tournament like the IPL.

"About the World Cup, it is not in my hands and I am taking things very easy right now," Ishan said. "You have to take one match at a time. One needs to understand that a lot is not in the hands of the players.

<h2>Reason behind taking break from cricket</h2>

Amid several speculations as to why he took a break from cricket at a time when Indian cricket was getting over the 2023 World Cup final loss, Ishan said,&nbsp;"I was practising [during the break]. When you take a break, people gossip about it a lot, they say a lot of things on social media. But I feel it's important to understand not everything is in players' hands. We can only make the best use of the break. This is what adopting a good mindset is,"

While Pant was away at that time recovering (from the injuries he suffered in a road accident), India picked Jitesh Sharma as keeper for Afghanistan T20Is. In the Test series against England, the BCCI selectors picked KS Bharat for the first two Tests before naming Dhruv Jurel as his replacement for the remaining three games.

However, considering the 20-team-tournament in the Caribbean and the USA, the selectors will have plenty of options in the keeper’s category to choose from, with Sanju Samson and KL Rahul emerging as top contenders for the spot in the final 15.&nbsp;

India and Mumbai Indians keeper-batter Ishan Kishan opened up on taking a break from cricket and his thoughts behind bagging the spot in the squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup in June.

This season, Ishan is Mumbai’s top run-getter thus far, with 161 runs from five games at 182.95. IPL 2024: Ishan Kishan opens up on taking ‘break from cricket’ and T20 WC spot, says ‘it’s not in my hands’

India Captain Rohit Sharma hasn’t thought about international retirement yet, instead has shown keenness to continue playing for a few more years. One of India’s most decorated ODI openers, Rohit guided the Men in Blue to the 2023 World Test Championship and home World Cup finals, going down to Australia on both occasions. Set to lead India to its fourth ICC tournament (2024 T20 World Cup) in the Caribbean and the USA in June, Rohit has his eyes set on a world trophy for his country.

Speaking to Gaurav Kapoor and British musician Ed Sheeran on the special edition of Breakfast with Champions aired on April 12, Rohit shared his thoughts on his future as an India cricketer.&nbsp;

Last year, under his guidance, India reached the finals of the 2023 World Cup, remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament. That run, however, ended on the day of the final, with Australia beating the hosts by six wickets to lift the trophy for the record sixth time. Although India failed to end its trophy drought in ICC tournaments, Rohit made headlines for his batting during the event, scoring 597 runs.&nbsp;

Outlining his plans, Rohit, while answering Sheeran’s question on retirement, said, "I haven't really thought about retirement. But, I don't know where life takes you. I am still playing well at this point in time - so I am thinking I am going to continue for a few more years and then, I don't know. I really want to win the World Cup and there is a WTC final in 2025, hopefully, India makes it," said Rohit.

<h2>‘We did everything right until the final’</h2>

Rohit’s Indian Team was the favourites to win the tournament at home, and they performed like one, winning all games with utter domination. However, when D-day arrived, they fell shy of their target and came second in the race for the world title.

Reflecting on India’s performance, Rohit said he couldn’t think of a reason to lose the final (to Australia) after a stunning win in the semis against New Zealand. Later, he admitted the team endured a bad day at work against the former champions.

"50-over World Cup for me is the actual World Cup. We've grown up watching that World Cup. More importantly, it was happening in India in front of our home crowd. We played so well up until that final. When we won the semi-finals, I thought, now we're just a step away. We're doing all the things right."

"What's the one thing that can make us lose the World Cup? Not a single thing came to my mind. Because I thought we ticked all the boxes, we were playing good cricket. Confidence was there."

"We were all supposed to have one bad day and that I guess was our bad day. Don't think we played bad cricket in that final, certain things didn't go our way. But Australia were slightly better than us," the India captain concluded.&nbsp;

Forget retirement, Rohit Sharma outlines plan to play for few more years

Former India opener Navjot Singh Sidhu has backed underfire Mumbai Indians' captain Hardik Pandya to replace Rohit Sharma as India skipper in white-ball formats in two years. Pandya replaced Rohit as MI skipper ahead of IPL 2024, and Sidhu feels he's the right man to take over the reins from Rohit in the blue jersey. Sidhu also picked a player who could replace Rohit as captain in Tests.

Although the whole saga of replacing Rohit with Pandya as the new MI captain didn't go well with the fans considering several players were ahead of the India all-rounder in the pecking order for the same position, Sidhu thinks the selectors have made their call on going ahead with Pandya looking at the future.

Pandya led Gujarat Titans for two seasons since switching bases, guiding them to their maiden title in their debut season in 2022 while leading his team to their successive final in the next edition. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma captained MI for a decade, guiding them to joint five IPL titles. However, Pandya returned to his former franchise, with MI naming him the captain straightaway.&nbsp;

"Hardik Pandya is the future," Sidhu said to India Today. "Rohit is now around 36-37. He has a couple more years left. He is a superb captain and a wonderful player. But, you have to actually look forward and prepare the ground for someone to take over."

"Hardik is your natural choice. That's why BCCI has named him the team's vice-captain," the former India opener added.

Speaking on who would replace Rohit in the red-ball format, Sidhu said Bumrah appears to be the right choice, having shown his credentials as a leader before.&nbsp;

"Jasprit Bumrah has been handling expectations wonderfully well. He was the natural choice for vice-captain. You can have Jasprit Bumrah as Test match captain," Sidhu noted.&nbsp;

<h2>Rohit to lead India in T20 World Cup</h2>

Following an excellent yet a failed 2023 World Cup campaign, where hosts India lost to Australia in the final, questions were raised around Rohit's future as India skipper across formats. However, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah put every speculation under the mat by confirming Rohit as the leader at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA, starting&nbsp;June 1.

With Rohit certain to lead the Men in Blue in the marquee event, the India veteran might continue across other two formats, meaning he could remain India skipper in ODIs and Tests at least until the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in February.&nbsp;

Much to everyone’s cheeriness, India star Virat Kohli will play the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA, starting June 1, hints an unnamed BCCI official. Contrary to earlier reports of selectors looking beyond Kohli for the 20-team-tournament mainly for his under-par strike rate, a board member assured fans of not worrying too much about it, saying the selectors don’t go by social media memes.

The India and RCB star batter is in top-notch form in the ongoing IPL 2024, leading the runs chart with 181 runs in three matches, striking at 141.4, slightly better than his strike rate in T20Is (138.16). Having scored two fifties thus far, the selectors back him to continue his golden touch while trying to improve his attacking rate.

With the T20 World Cup squad expected to be announced by the end of April, Kohli has ample time and games at hand to work on those aspects, pressing his sure-shot case for a slot in the team for the marquee event. The right-handed batter averages over 50 (51.76) in the shorter format playing for India, having amassed 4037 runs in 109 innings.

"See, it is just the beginning (of the league) and Kohli has started fine. He will improve his strike rate as well in the coming matches. As far as I personally feel, he will make it (to the World Cup squad). Selectors don't go by social media memes. Cricket is played on the field not on social media platforms," the BCCI official, on condition of anonymity, said, as quoted by IANS.

<h2>All eyes on India’s T20 WC squad</h2>

Following the heartbreaking loss at last year’s 50-over World Cup final at the hands of Australia, the Men in Blue will aim to get back by winning the T20 WC later this year.&nbsp;

While Captain Rohit Sharma and rookie Yashasvi Jaiswal are sure to be openers for the event, Kohli will stick to his usual number three slot. Suryakumar Yadav will play at four. SKY, as most fans call him, has been out of action since December last year, and is due to return to appear for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024.&nbsp;

For the middle order, India has plenty of options to look at, ranging from Hardik Pandya to Rinku Singh to Shivam Dube to Tilak Varma. The question mark around the wicketkeepers is also there, with several players back in reckoning for selection.

Getting to the bowling department, India is sure to pick Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav, while the remaining spots will be up for grabs.&nbsp;

Virat Kohli likely to get picked for T20 World Cup, hints BCCI official

Over a month after Indian batter Hanuma Vihari claimed political interference was the reason for his dismissal as the Andhra Pradesh captain, the state cricket association has served a show-cause notice to him.&nbsp;

The Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) on Thursday (Mar 28)&nbsp;claimed it served the notice to Vihari after the apex council meeting a few days ago.&nbsp;

"Yes, we have served him a show-cause notice and we are awaiting his reply," an ACA official was quoted as saying by PTI.&nbsp;

"This is just to find what made him react the way he did last month. He has not reached out to us, so this is a chance for him to come out with his grievances," the official further said.

However, Vihari released a statement, refuting ACA's claims that he had not responded to the show-cause notice.&nbsp;

"I want to move out and play for another team. I've asked ACA for a no-objection certificate. I'm awaiting a response," Vihari told ESPNcricinfo.

<h2>What is the controversy?</h2>

After Andhra crashed out of the Ranji Trophy last month, Vihari said he would "never play for Andhra" again.&nbsp;

In an Instagram post, Vihari revealed that he was asked to step down from&nbsp;captaincy after a complaint was launched against him. The said complaint came after the 17th man in the Andhra squad approached his father, a politician, as he was not happy with the behaviour of Vihari.

"I never said anything on a personal note to the player, but the association thought the player was more important than the guy who gave his body on the line last year and batted left-handed, took Andhra to the knockouts five times in the last seven years and played for India in 16 Tests," wrote Vihari.&nbsp;

Vihari also posted a letter of support from his fellow Andhra players on his X account.

According to&nbsp;reports,&nbsp;KN Prudhuvi Raj was the 17th player who filed the complaint. After Vihari took the social media route to plead his case, Raj also released a statement.&nbsp;

War of words intensifies between Hanuma Vihari-ACA over showcause notice

Two of India’s greatest cricketers, Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni, have shared the dressing room for nearly a decade, sharing mutual admiration and respect for what they achieved on the cricket field during their playing days. Speaking on how he perceived Dhoni when he first burst onto the international scene during his maiden series in Bangladesh (in December 2004), Sachin said the sound of MS’ bat in the games made him realise his potential.

“First time I saw him was in Bangladesh. In one of the matches he played, one or two shots at the end, the kind of sound I heard from his bat, I immediately turned towards Sourav (Ganguly), sitting next to me and said, ‘There is something different when he hits the ball’,” Sachin Tendulkar revealed on Jio Insider.

Sachin further said given the power-hitter that MS Dhoni was, and the sound his bat used to make while striking the ball, everyone knew it would travel 10 yards extra into the stands.&nbsp;

“The big hitters have this speciality, and when they connect it, you will think it is going to the distance, but it will travel 10 yards more. I saw that quality in his batting,” he added.

<h2>Why did MS never sit with Sachin on the plane?</h2>

Often being allotted the seat next to the mighty Sachin Tendulkar on the plane, MS Dhoni never used to sit there, instead asked someone else to swap it with him.&nbsp;

“Few players told me, most of the time in flight, his seat would be next to me, but he will switch it with some other players,” laughed Sachin.&nbsp;

“For few years, he never sat next to me. We started sitting next to each other later. I didn’t know that he was so shy, and that’s why he used to switch his seats,” Sachin revealed.&nbsp;

<h2>When Sachin suggested BCCI to appoint MS as captain</h2>

Following India’s shocking early exit from the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies, the BCCI reached out to Sachin to lead the Men in Blue in the white-ball set-up, including in the T20Is, but Sachin declined the offer immediately.&nbsp;

Two of India’s greatest cricketers, Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni, have shared the dressing room for nearly a decade, sharing mutual admiration and respect for what they achieved on the cricket field during their playing days. Speaking on how he perceived Dhoni when he first burst onto the international scene during his maiden series in Bangladesh (in December 2004), Sachin said the sound of MS’ bat in the games made him realise his potential. “First time I saw him was in Bangladesh. In one of the matches he played, one or two shots at the end, the kind of sound I heard from his bat, I immediately turned towards Sourav (Ganguly), sitting next to me and said, ‘There is something different when he hits the ball’,” Sachin Tendulkar revealed on Jio Insider. Sachin further said given the power-hitter that MS Dhoni was, and the sound his bat used to make while striking the ball, everyone knew it would travel 10 yards extra into the stands. ALSO READ: Former PCB chairman and diplomat Shaharyar Khan passes away at 89 “The big hitters have this speciality, and when they connect it, you will think it is going to the distance, but it will travel 10 yards more. I saw that quality in his batting,” he added. Why did MS never sit with Sachin on the plane? Often being allotted the seat next to the mighty Sachin Tendulkar on the plane, MS Dhoni never used to sit there, instead asked someone else to swap it with him. “Few players told me, most of the time in flight, his seat would be next to me, but he will switch it with some other players,” laughed Sachin. “For few years, he never sat next to me. We started sitting next to each other later. I didn’t know that he was so shy, and that’s why he used to switch his seats,” Sachin revealed. When Sachin suggested BCCI to appoint MS as captain Following India’s shocking early exit from the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies, the BCCI reached out to Sachin to lead the Men in Blue in the white-ball set-up, including in the T20Is, but Sachin declined the offer immediately. Instead, he urged the board to look at an unlikely candidate in MS Dhoni, whom he thought was the right man for the job going ahead. Shedding light on the same, Sachin said, “The BCCI offered me captaincy in 2007, but my body was in terrible shape.” “My observation of MS Dhoni was very good. Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has opened up on his injury last year during the ODI World Cup. Pandya said he promised the team management to return to action in five days&nbsp;but his haste led to aggravation of the injury, forcing him to skip the tournament.&nbsp;

Pandya was last seen in action during the league match against Bangladesh in the marquee tournament.&nbsp;During the match, Pandya twisted his ankle when he came to bowl his first over of the day.&nbsp;

“I had been preparing for the World Cup for more than a year. It was a freak injury during the match. The injury was said to be for 25 days and that would mean I would miss the rest of the World Cup, but I pushed," Pandya told host broadcasters Star Sports.

“I told the management that I would return after five days. I got injections done on my ankle in three places. I had to remove blood from my ankle because of the swelling. I wanted to give everything,” he added.&nbsp;

Ace India spinner and modern-day great Ravi Ashwin recently became the second Indian after the legendary Anil Kumble to complete 500 or more wickets in Tests. The lanky spinner achieved this feat during the five-match Test series against England at home, which India won 4-1. Ashwin also played his 100th Test (fifth Test in Dharamsala) and picked 26 wickets in the series.

Hailing his team’s premier bowler, head coach Rahul Dravid lauded Ashwin for challenging him as the coach, something Dravid admires sitting in the top position in Indian cricket.&nbsp;

Upon breaching the 500-wicket mark in Tests, Ashwin entered the elite of cricketers with similar records to their name.&nbsp;

Among all the 22 players (bowlers and all-rounders) who have played as many matches and picked over 100 Test wickets, only Sri Lanka great Muttiah Muralitharan (584) had more wickets than Ashwin (509) heading into their 100th match.

Besides, Ashwin’s Test strike rate (51.3) is the best among all players in their 99 Tests and is best among all spinners, 40 included, who have picked at least 150 wickets.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Ashwin will play for Rajasthan Royals in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League starting March 22 in Chennai. Rajasthan will host Uttar Pradesh in their opening game on Sunday (March 24).&nbsp;

Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav has admitted that his performances dipped after former captain MS Dhoni retired from the international circuit. The wrist-spinner was a pivotal part of the Indian setup when Dhoni was around but was pushed to the fringes as the talismanic player called time on his career.&nbsp;

Former India captain and batting great Sunil Gavaskar has urged the BCCI to implement the 'incentive scheme' in the Ranji Trophy as well, saying it will motivate more players at the domestic level and will also look after the feeder (to the Test team) system.&nbsp;

Earlier, the BCCI announced an incentive scheme for all those who will appear in 75% of Tests in a season by paying them an extra INR 45 lakhs per game (outside of their designated match fee), while those playing from 50-75% matches will pocked INR 30 lakhs.&nbsp;

"That is a wonderful thing by the BCCI to reward those who would be playing [Test cricket]. But I would also request the BCCI to ensure that the feeder to the Test team, which is the Ranji Trophy, is also looked after," Gavaskar said on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Friday.

Given the pay breakdown in India's domestic tournaments, a player earns INR 2 lakhs for a Ranji game. If he plays each match, and his team qualifies for the finals, it adds up to 10 games, meaning a player can earn a maximum of INR 20 lakhs (equivalent to the lowest base price for a player in the IPL). Besides, the match fee in the Vijay Hazare Trophy is INR 50,000, dropping to INR 17,500 in Syed Mushtaq Ali.

"[If your team doesn't qualify for the knockouts], your whole year's earnings are around 20 lakh, which is like the base price in the IPL. If there are proper contracts, then players will feel more motivated to play red-ball cricket," an unnamed domestic player said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.&nbsp;

Speaking on the same lines, Gavaskar said the BCCI must consider increasing the player fees by two or three folds to ensure financial security for all, motivating them to prefer the Ranji Trophy over franchise-based T20 cricket.&nbsp;

"If the Ranji Trophy fee can be doubled or tripled, certainly there will be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy, [and a] lot less pullouts. They will all be wanting to play with the slab system - [if] every ten first-class matches you get that much more - so I would request the BCCI to look at that aspect as well."

<h2>Better scheduling will help the motive</h2>

Gavaskar touched upon a different aspect of how better scheduling can help BCCI achieve their motive.&nbsp;

The former top-order batter asked BCCI to look into the growing concern of the short gap between Ranji games and even suggested Ranji to be the first of three tournaments to be played and not the last to ensure everyone is available and no one opts to skip it.

As things stand, the Ranji Trophy is the last competition in the domestic calendar.&nbsp;

"That way, everybody will be available to play [the Ranji Trophy], except for the ones featuring for India. There will be no real excuse to pull out. With the one-dayers beginning from January, people who are in the IPL can have enough practice from them," Gavaskar said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Mumbai recently won their record 42nd Ranji Trophy title, beating Vidarbha in the final in Wankhede.&nbsp;

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar was the man behind handing Test caps to Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal against England series, despite resistance from captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar was the man behind handing Test caps to Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal against England series, despite resistance from captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid. According to a report in Hindustan Times citing BCCI sources, the former Indian pacer was the one-man army that suggested India bet on the youngsters to bail them out even when the Test series was on the line. "It was Agarkar who suggested Jurel's name. The team management wasn't too confident about him as he was still a rookie. Picking a youngster who hasn't had much red-ball exposure at the top level straightaway into the Indian side for an important series like England was always going to be a brave call but Agarkar had seen enough to vouch for the youngster," the source told the publication. With KL Rahul ruled out due to an injury and Virat Kohli already skipping the series due to personal reasons, the Indian batting lineup was bereft of experience. The management may have been tempted to go back to tried-and-tested players such as Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane but Agarkar put his foot down and reposed faith in the youth. Also read | Ranji Trophy 23-24: Mumbai clinch record-extending 42nd title, defeat Vidarbha by 169 runs "There was a discussion about Cheteshwar Pujara, who was scoring runs in Ranji Trophy. The batting line-up literally had no experience. But Agarkar stood firm on looking ahead with Padikkal's selection. He was present when he hit a fluent 150 in a Ranji Trophy and he believed that his height would come in handy against the inexperienced England spinners," the source added. Jurel was sensational with the gloves but also played a couple of incredible knocks, especially in Ranchi, which helped India win the series and complete a turnaround. Similarly, Padikkal came in the last match in Dharamshala and showed incredible composure. Dravid lauds Agarkar After the win, Dravid also lauded Agarkar for his foresight, saying he was grateful as his backroom staff did not have the opportunities to scout players on the domestic circuit. “I’d just like to give a big shoutout to Ajit [Agarkar, chairman of selectors] and his team as well. A lot of the youngsters that come in, honestly, as a coach and as a captain, we don’t actually get to see them because we don’t see as much domestic cricket as Ajit and his team of selectors do," said Dravid. Also read | 'We need to relook,' says India coach Rahul Dravid on domestic schedule "And they’ve pushed us and they’ve challenged us to pick some of these young players and they’ve picked the right ones and they’ve come out here and performed," he added. After the Test series, the focus now shifts to IPL but Agarkar will be already charting the perfect lineup for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Given the template set by him, it looks certain that youngsters would be preferred. (With inputs from agencies)

Indian all-rounder R Ashwin has revealed it was captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid who stepped up big time when he had to leave the Rajkot Test midway to go and tend to his ailing mother.

Indian all-rounder R Ashwin has revealed it was captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid who stepped up big time when he had to leave the Rajkot Test midway to go and tend to his ailing mother. Ashwin said Rohit helped arrange a private plane that took him to Chennai. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said he was waiting for his parents' call after picking up the 500th wicket, earlier in the day. "Around 7 pm, I called my wife before going to shower. My parents did not pick up the calls. And I found my wife's voice was breaking. She asked me to move away from my teammates and then she told me that my mother collapsed after a severe headache." Ashwin said he contemplated returning home but couldn't find a flight as Rajkot Airport shuts down by 6 pm. It was then that Rohit came to his rescue and helped arrange the flight. "Rohit and Rahul bhai (brother) came to my room. Rohit saw me thinking and he said 'what are you thinking about? Just pack your bags and leave now'. He told me that he would try and arrange a charter flight for me," said Ashwin. "A big thank you to Cheteshwar Pujara. He spoke to a lot of people and arranged for the charter flight. I didn't know how I spent 2 hours in that flight back home," he added. "Rohit is like 'That's okay'. But I told Kamlesh to stay back with the team. However, when I went down to the lobby, Kamlesh and a security person were standing there. Rohit was calling Kamlesh and keeping a tab on me throughout the journey back home." Ashwin said he was extremely grateful to Rohit and wished god gave him more. “I’ve played under several captains and leaders, but it is his (Rohit’s) good heart that has made him what he is today – someone with five IPL titles as equal to Dhoni. God doesn’t give it easy. He should get something bigger than all that." "I already had respect for him as a leader, he backs a player without question until the last moment. It’s not an easy thing. Even Dhoni does that. But he takes 10 steps more.” Ashwin returned after the brief visit home and played a major part in the remainder of the series which India won 4-1. (With inputs from agencies)

He was not part of India's 4-1 home Tests series win over England, due to personal reasons (to welcome his second child), but he will now be seen in IPL 2024, for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). If reports by The Telegraph are to be believed, Kohli will have to perform very well and strike at an impressive rate to be considered for India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad. At present, it is being widely reported that the former Indian captain isn't a certainty in India's squad and is likely to make way for power hitters.&nbsp;

During the England Test series, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit Sharma will lead India in the T20 WC. However, he didn't confirm Kohli's participation. In this regard, Shah said, "We will discuss Virat’s role in due course." Rohit and Kohli returned to the T20I setup after 14 months during the Afghanistan series early this year.

It is believed that the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee are keen to go ahead with power hitters such as Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Jitesh Sharma, etc. instead of including Kohli (who has a strike rate of 138.15 in T20Is). Moreover, the committee feels the&nbsp;slow pitches in West Indies -- co-hosts along with USA for the T20 WC -- won't suit Kohli's style of play. Thus, a discussion with Kohli is on the cards and his T20I future might well be sealed sooner than later. If he gets dropped, it will be a huge development.

Meanwhile, in a recent interaction with News18, former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Irfan opined that no Indian team can be complete without Kohli. "No Indian team can be formed without Virat Kohli. How can anyone say that Virat Kohli should not be in India's team for T20 World Cup?&nbsp;You can see whatever the pressure, he performed for India, he always delivered for India," said Irfan.

Virat Kohli likely to be DROPPED to make way for power hitters in India's T20 World Cup squad: Reports

Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif lavished huge praise on opener Yashasvi Jaiswal after his splendid run in the just-concluded England Tests at home. Jaiswal ended the five-match series, won by Rohit Sharma-led India by 4-1 margin, with 712 runs -- being the highest run-getter -- and also became only the second Indian batter after Sunil Gavaskar to cross the 700-run mark in a Test series. The swashbuckling left-hander slammed two double tons to raise his stature in international cricket. He is already a part of India's T20I setup and Kaif believes the opener can fit well in ODIs too.

<h2>'He is an all-format player, whether you talk about ODIs, T20s or Tests'</h2>

Talking to Star Sports, Kaif said, "The sample size is very small, but we have been seeing Jaiswal for many years. We have seen him in the Ranji Trophy and the IPL. He played splendidly in the IPL, and he is an incredible player."

"He has not yet made his ODI debut. Give him an ODI debut as well. He is an all-format player, whether you talk about ODIs, T20s or Tests. As a batter, he has both defensive and attacking techniques. When he makes up his mind and if it is required, he can go from the first to the sixth or seventh gear. Hitting (James) Anderson for three sixes in three balls in a Test match shows how capable a batter he is," Kaif added.

Jaiswal ended the series at a strike-rate of 79.91, hitting as many as 26 sixes overall (including three successive of England's senior pacer Anderson). The southpaw&nbsp;became only the second Indian batter to have hit the most number of sixes against a single team. He will now shift his focus on IPL 2024, where he will represent the Rajasthan Royals (RR) before the T20 World Cup 2024 edition gets underway on June 1, in USA and West Indies.&nbsp;

Seeing his rise in Tests and T20Is, Jaiswal is expected to cement his spot in ODIs as well in the near future.&nbsp;

Mohammed Kaif lauds 'all-format player' Yashasvi Jaiswal after England Tests, calls for his ODI debut

Former Australia captain and batting great Ian Chappell has come down hard on the England Test skipper Ben Stokes for the strategy lapse in his captaincy during the fourth Test in Ranchi that led to India winning the match and taking the series home. Chappell said Stokes should have read the conditions well, and instead of giving the ball to Joe Root, he should have trusted James Anderson to get some wickets.

When India seemed to get going in their chase of over 190 on day three in Ranchi, Stokes brought Root early into the attack, which led to the Indian batters taking advantage of the situation and piling up quick runs on the board.

Although England fought back on day four, picking five wickets, Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel ensured India crossed the winning line with five wickets remaining.&nbsp;

Losing that game meant England conceded the series (1-3), eventually losing the five-match series 1-4 to India.

“On the third evening, Stokes desperately needed to start India's chase with his best two bowlers and try to claim at least one wicket. Incredibly, he gave the ball to a part-timer, Joe Root, and ignored the experienced, probing bowling of Jimmy Anderson,” Chappell said of Stokes' captaincy during India Tests.

Chappell also noted that by allowing Indian batters to change strike quickly during that period, Stokes let them release the pressure.

"The second innings should have been a time to force the Indian batters into taking a risk, but by allowing easy singles, Stokes gave his opponents the upper hand,” Chappell said.&nbsp;

<h2>England to reflect on series loss</h2>

Coach Brendon McCullum and Captain Ben Stokes have assured to have some uncomfortable&nbsp;conversations with everyone to ensure England are learning from the mistakes and not repeating when their home summer gets underway after the T20 World Cup in June in the Caribbean and the USA.

Speaking after the loss in the fifth and the final Test in Dharamsala, McCullum said India exposed the loopholes in England’s Bazball approach that took the cricketing world by storm since he and Stokes took over the leadership roles.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Captain Stokes said this England side was man enough to accept the defeat and vowed to make needed changes before England’s next assignment.&nbsp;

IND v ENG: Strategy lapse led to series loss – Ian Chappell comes down hard on Ben Stokes

Cricket is changing for good, or probably not. From considering Tests as THE format for a good hundred years to putting it in the category of something that is dying a slow death, cricket has evolved quite a lot in recent years. Many worldwide pundits, commentators and even analysts, alongside the decision-makers in the ICC and MCC, have tried to restore the game’s oldest format's pride, but none seemed to have cracked the code.

So, how does anyone get there?&nbsp;

Does playing more Tests, reducing the number, or hoping against hope that the T20 format doesn’t kill it completely, make any difference?&nbsp;

Well, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has it seems found a solution, recommended by Men’s National Team chief selector Ajit Agarkar, called the "Test Cricket Incentive Scheme".

<h2>What happens under this scheme?</h2>

Following India’s famous win in the fifth and the final Test of the home series against England in Dharamsala on Saturday (March 9), Shah posted on his social media handle (X, previously known as Twitter) launching the new scheme that provides Test regulars, who will play more than 75% of the matches scheduled in a season, with a whopping incentive on their match fees.

Considering this scheme will come into effect retrospectively from the 2022-23 season, someone like Cheteshwar Pujara, who played seven out of the nine matches that season (77.7%), will earn INR 45 lakhs per match in addition to his match fee of INR 15 lakhs per game, making it INR 60 lakhs per game. In his case, the sum amounts to INR 4.2 crore (including incentives), compared to INR 1.05 crore he would have earned as a reward for prioritising Test cricket.&nbsp;

The BCCI secretary revealed the purpose behind this, saying this "step aimed at providing financial growth and stability" to Test players.

Meanwhile, under this scheme, all those players featuring in 50-75% of Tests in a season will earn INR 30 lakh per Test (outside of their match fees), while those who play less than 50% of the slated games will not be eligible for the benefits under the scheme. This incentive, however, isn't linked to BCCI's annual retainers, which is a separate component.

The BCCI, in a statement, said, "This scheme is not only designed to encourage players to engage in the purest format of the sport but also addresses the evolving dynamics of the cricketing landscape, ensuring parity with match fees in other formats and league cricket."

<h3>How can this change cricket’s dynamics in India first and then worldwide?</h3>

It is not a hidden fact that BCCI is perhaps the most powerful of all cricket boards for the revenue they generate (to pocket 38.5% of the money earned by the ICC), which is heads and shoulders ahead of the second-placed England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), which will earn $41 million out of $600 million the ICC is set to make in the next financial cycle.

Now, with how BCCI influences boards on countless grounds, inspiring to save Tests being one of them, this initiative will bring wholesome changes to the mentality of the budding cricketers on making the right calls to prioritise playing Tests rather than running behind money by featuring in franchise-based T20 leagues worldwide.

With the growing craze among youngsters to prefer the shorter formats, mainly to earn&nbsp;more money, the best players from outside of the Big 3 (India, Australia and England) are remaining unavailable for selection in the longest format, an example of which was the South African squad for the New Zealand tour, which had as many as seven debutants, since all first-team players preferred to playing SA20 – their newest franchise-based T20 tournament.

However, with this scheme coming into action, a sea of changes in the mindset is expected to take centrestage in India, and, who knows, if successful, other boards might follow the same path to ensure their best players are playing Tests, helping it to get back where it belonged.

<h4>What led to this scheme?</h4>

There is always something that leads to something revolutionary. From the Indian cricket perspective, the crucial case of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer led the BCCI’s decision-makers to launch this scheme.

Since Ishan and Iyer remained unavailable for selection for Ranji Trophy matches for their respective teams for separate reasons despite being fit and away from international commitments, it irked the bosses, who warned them otherwise in a second warning.&nbsp;

For not abiding by the instructions laid by the BCCI for the second time, the Indian Cricket Board released both from the annual retainers’ central contract list, sending a strong message to everyone to play the red-ball tournament rather than prioritising IPL.&nbsp;

Ishan will feature for Mumbai Indians, while Iyer will captain Kolkata Knight Riders in the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League, starting March 22 in Chennai.&nbsp;

Explained – How BCCI’s new ‘incentive scheme’ initiative will change cricket dynamics in India

The BCCI might have left out the batting duo of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the central contract list for this season, but head coach Rahul Dravid feels they must put this behind them and train harder, score runs in the domestic and come back to wear the blue jersey again.&nbsp;

After India completed a 4-1 series win over England with an innings and 64 run victory in the final Test in Dharamsala on Saturday (March 9), Dravid addressed the elephant in the room and shared his thoughts on the star duo.

While Ishan asked to remain unavailable for selection following South Africa ODIs late last year, citing personal reasons, Iyer complained of back spasms after being left out of India’s squad for the final three Tests (vs England) despite the doctors at the NCA clearing him of any injury issue.

The Indian board had earlier issued a directive asking the centrally contracted players, who are neither picked in any India squad nor are getting treated at the NCA for any injury, to appear for their respective Ranji teams, pointing fingers at Iyer and Ishan.&nbsp;

After both didn’t abide by the instructions laid by the BCCI, the board sent another warning to the duo; even when both remained unavailable for selection after that, the cricket board took stern action against them by not retaining them in their central contract list for 2023-2024 season.

However, Ishan trained with his IPL team captain, Hardik Pandya, in Baroda, and Iyer made himself available for selection for Mumbai’s semi-final match in the Ranji Trophy.

<h2>‘Everyone playing domestic remains in the mix’</h2>

While addressing this issue, Dravid said both will remain in contention for selection, adding everyone playing domestic cricket will stay afloat in the mix for India call-up.&nbsp;

"They're always in the mix," Dravid said after India's 4-1 series win over England in Dharmsala on Saturday.&nbsp;

"Everyone who's playing domestic cricket is in the mix. Firstly, I don't decide contracts, right? Contracts are decided by the selectors and the board. I don't even know what the criteria are. I'm involved in - people ask me my opinion on the 15, and me and Rohit select the XI. That's how it works,” the head coach added.&nbsp;

Clearing the air on what happens behind the scenes while picking a squad for a series, Dravid said,&nbsp;"We've never discussed whether somebody has a contract or not, whether he's going to be selected in the 15. There are enough examples of people playing different formats of the game, whether they have contracts or not."

"I don't even know sometimes what the list of the contracted players is when we take these decisions, discussions on the 15 or the playing 11 for that matter. No one's out of the picture, no one's out of the mix, it's just a question of hopefully them getting back and fit, playing cricket, and forcing the selectors to pick them again,” he added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has introduced a new incentive scheme to reward cricketers who will prioritise playing Test cricket. As per the new scheme, if a cricketer plays more than 75% of Test matches in a season, he shall be rewarded with an increment of 300% in his overall match fees.

According to&nbsp;reports, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel had recommended this incentive scheme to encourage cricketers to give importance to first-class cricket.&nbsp;

The BCCI secretary posted an image on his social media handle X, previously known as Twitter, citing an example of how this scheme will work and under what circumstances the players will receive the incentive.&nbsp;

Shah shared that the 'Test Cricket Incentive Scheme' for the senior men's team&nbsp;will give players extra incentive other than the usual match fees for&nbsp;taking part in the longest format of the game.

As this new scheme is backdated to include the 2022-23 season, someone like Cheteshwar Pujara, who played seven of the nine contested matches (77.7%) that season, will earn INR 45 lakh per Test in addition to his match fee of INR 15 lakh per Test. For prioritising Test cricket, the BCCI will reward Pujara with a total sum of INR 4.2 crores (including incentives), as against INR 1.05 crores, which he previously earned in one season.

However, with this scheme taking centre stage, several players will be keen on pushing to play for India in the longest format as against choosing to play franchise-based T20 Leagues for extra money.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah introduces ‘incentive scheme’ to protect and promote Test cricket in India

Playing his 100th Test match, ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin picked a five-wicket haul in the second innings to help India beat England by an innings and 64 runs and win the five-match series 4-1.&nbsp;

Ashwin left the team midway into the third Test (in Rajkot) only to return and wreak havoc with the ball in the remainder of the series, returning with 26 wickets from five matches at 24.81.&nbsp;

Reflecting on his star-studded performance throughout the five Tests, Ashwin said he is pleased with his efforts while picking his best spell from the series.

“Very happy, can't really put a wrapper on how I'm feeling. It's been quite a lot that has happened over the last week or so, a lot of talk about the 100th Test.”&nbsp;

“Overwhelmed, a lot of well-wishers have come forward and wished me well. Great previews by the media team of the BCCI. But to have a good game in terms of wickets, what more can a bowler ask for?,” Ashwin said after guiding India home in the Dharamsala Test.

Meanwhile, Ashwin has been every touring captain’s worst nightmare purely for the records he holds in Tests in India. In this five-match series, Ashwin returned with two five-fors and one four-wicket haul, causing trouble to each England batter, mainly their skipper Ben Stokes, whom he got out a few times.

<h2>Ashwin's favourite spell against England</h2>

Looking back at his performances that made headlines, Ashwin sounded pleased with how the ball left his hand in the final Test, wherein he picked five for 77 in the second innings.

“Through the series, I have gone to different actions, different speeds, and different releases all because India is one place where we play in so many venues, and every surface requires a different sort of skillset to be executed.”&nbsp;

“But overall, I was pleased with how the ball came out in this game, even though I went for a few big hits. It's probably because of the fact that the ball is hanging on both sides of the blade. Probably most pleased with this performance and the second innings at Ranchi,” Ashwin said of his best outing against England at home this time.

On his experiments as a bowler, Ashwin said he likes to keep his ears open to constructive criticism and even try to make changes to his game going by the feedback.

“I am the least bit insecure about what people feel about me. I know that a cricketer or anybody at the top level of any other profession will have to take criticism from experts. This is one such case, I have kept my eyes open. I have listened to good feedback and good criticism and taken it on board,” Ashwin noted.&nbsp;

IND v ENG: Ravi Ashwin reflects on monumental Test series win over England, picks his best performance

The Indian Team completed a 4-1 series win over England in the Test series, and head coach Rahul Dravid says he cannot stop being prouder of this playing unit.&nbsp;

Dravid said India showed character by winning the series 4-1 after losing the first game in Hyderabad. The veteran batter also hailed the youngsters for stepping up in this injury crisis phase for the hosts, with several top stars, including Mohammed Shami and KL Rahul, missing from action besides Virat Kohli who had personal things to cater to.

Speaking after the final Test in Dharamsala, which India won by an innings and 64 runs, Dravid reflected on this massive series win for India and how he felt about dealing with some new faces and veterans in the dressing room.

“Yeah, really proud, to be honest,” Dravid said after India won the fifth Test.

“To go behind in the first Test, obviously, it was a little bit disappointing, but just credit to the team and all the players, the way they bounced back. I thought we were able to keep a lot of calmness in spite of losing that first match.”

We've always found people to step up, the team to stand up. Dravid was loud in praising each member of the dressing room and shed some exciting words for the India captain Rohit Sharma, who led this inexperienced team to beat the high-flying English side in their home conditions.

Usually, the bowler taking a five-fer is given the honour of leading the team back to the pavilion but since Ashwin is playing his 100th Test, Kuldeep took the opportunity to show respect to his senior. The leg-spinner tossed the old SG ball to Ashwin and urged him to accept the crowd's applause. However, Ashwin remained adamant that Kuldeep be the one to lead off the field. IND vs ENG: Kuldeep Yadav, R Ashwin share endearing moment during off-spinner's 100th Test - Watch

Indian all-rounder R Ashwin has revealed that it was his hospitalised mother who urged him to join the national side after he had left the Rajkot Test midway to go and tend to her.

Indian all-rounder R Ashwin has revealed that it was his hospitalised mother who urged him to join the national side after he had left the Rajkot Test midway to go and tend to her. Soon after taking 500 Test wickets during the match, Ashwin was forced to race back to Chennai after learning that his mother had been admitted due to a blackout. "When I landed and got to the hospital, my mom was slipping in and out of consciousness, and the first thing she asked me was, 'Why did you come?'" Ashwin told Espncricinfo. "The next time she was conscious, she said, ''I think you should go back because the Test match is happening," Ashwin added. Ashwin reflected that his entire family had dedicated their lives to his cricketing career, adding that the journey had been a rollercoaster ride for all of them. "I am sure most parents and families are like that, but my parents' lives are even more intertwined with my cricket. I mean, I'm in the second half of my thirties and my dad still watches a game like he would watch my first international game. It means a lot to them. Compared to what it means to them, it definitely means less to me." Also read | Explained: Why IPL is cricket equivalent version of English Premier League According to Ashwin's wife Prithi Narayanan, the family had initially decided to not inform the off-spinner as he was busy with the Test match. Ashwin's long-term teammate Cheteshwar Pujara, who has family in Rajkot, was called upon by the Ashwin family. "So I dialled Cheteshwar Pujara and his family were of great help. And once we found a way out, I called up Ashwin because after the scans, the doctor suggested it was better to have her son around," Narayanan told The Indian Express. Ashwin's 100 Test milestone After Rajkot, Ashwin played the Ranchi Test as well and will now be playing his 100th Test match in Dharmshala, starting Thursday (Mar 7). So far, the veteran has accounted for 507 wickets in 99 Tests, including 35 five-fers. He is the ninth-highest wicket-taker overall, second-most by an Indian. The 37-year-old also has 3,309 runs including five hundreds and 14 fifties in the longest format of the game. ‘You should go back’: R Ashwin reveals how his hospitalised mother urged him to return to Rajkot Test

Indian men's Test team captain Rohit Sharma has hit back at England batter Ben Duckett's recent comments that the hosts had learned from the 'Bazball' style of cricket and changed their gameplay. Speaking to reporters on the eve of the fifth Test match at Dharamsala, Sharma gave it back to the England opener, reminding him of swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. “Yashasvi Jaiswal learning from Ben Duckett? There was a guy called Rishabh Pant in our team. Probably Ben Duckett hasn’t seen him play," quipped Sharma. Also read | Explained: Why IPL is cricket equivalent version of English Premier League After Indian batters took an aggressive route against the English bowlers during the Rajkot Test, Duckett made the comment, suggesting that England's flamboyant style of play should be credited for Jaiswal's performance. “When you see players from the opposition playing like that, it almost feels like we should take some credit that they’re playing differently than how other people play Test cricket,” Duckett was quoted as saying. Nasser Hussain's reaction to Duckett's statement Notably, Sharma is not the first cricketer to have reacted to Duckett's rather absurd statement. Former England captain-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain in a passionate monologue said Jaiswal had learned attacking form of cricket after doing the hard yards in the IPL and domestic circuit. "The comment on Jaiswal that he has learned from us, I am going to touch on that. He has not learned from you, he has learned from his upbringing and all the hard yards he has put in while growing up, he has learned from the IPL. If anything, I would look at him and learn from him," Hussain told Michael Atherton on Sky Sports podcast. "So, whatever they are saying in public and in that dressing room, I hope they are going back into their room with self-introspection. I can look at that lad and learn from him. Otherwise, it becomes a cult, doesn’t it? At times, Bazball has been described as a cult where you cannot criticise either within or externally. Even in this regime, there is room for learning and improving," he added. With the ICC T20 World Cup less than three months away, the price for the tickets have skyrocketed, especially for the mouth-watering India vs Pakistan contest. Although the World Cup is taking place in the United States of America (USA) - a non-traditional cricketing nation, the prices continue to remain at an all-time high.&nbsp;

According to a report in USA Today, tickets to two of India's matches involving Pakistan and Canada had been sold out as soon as they were released. However, the same tickets were now being sold on secondary platforms (resale websites) at&nbsp;exorbitantly high prices.&nbsp;

The official tickets&nbsp;for the&nbsp;India-Pakistan match were priced at&nbsp;$6 (Rs 497) with the most expensive ticket for the premium seats costing around&nbsp;$400 (Rs 33,148) without taxes. The ICC had specified at the time that "no&nbsp;additional fees will be imposed beyond the specified taxes".

However,&nbsp;on&nbsp;StubHub and SeatGeek, the same&nbsp;$400 ticket was now available for&nbsp;$40,000 (around Rs 33 Lakh)&nbsp;and if the platform fee was added, the amount zooted up to&nbsp;$50,000 (around Rs 41 Lakh).

On SeatGeek, the lowest-priced&nbsp;tickets started at $1,198 (Rs 99,305) and went up to&nbsp; $179,500 (Rs 1.48 crore). Adding the platform fees, the eventual price of the tickets came out to around $222,500 (Rs 1.8 crores).&nbsp;

<h2>Outrageous pricing&nbsp;</h2>

To understand how outrageous the ticket prices are, one could have got a World Series ticket at around $1,100 last year while&nbsp;courtside seats for the NBA finals were going for as much as $24,000. The average price for a ticket to&nbsp;Super Bowl LVIII which the Kansas&nbsp;City Chiefs won last month came around $9,000 on the secondary market.

India and Pakistan will resume their World Cup rivalry on June 9 in New York. While India has won seven&nbsp;matches out of eight in the T20 World Cups, Pakistan's only win over their neighbours came during the 2021 edition when Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan steamrolled their opponents in Dubai by 10 wickets.

India quickly avenged the loss in the subsequent edition where Virat Kohli's masterful innings took India to victory in front of a 90,000+ crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium (MCG) in Australia.&nbsp;
