Forget retirement, Rohit Sharma outlines plan to play for few more years
India Captain Rohit Sharma hasn’t thought about international retirement yet, instead has shown keenness to continue playing for a few more years. One of India’s most decorated ODI openers, Rohit guided the Men in Blue to the 2023 World Test Championship and home World Cup finals, going down to Australia on both occasions. Set to lead India to its fourth ICC tournament (2024 T20 World Cup) in the Caribbean and the USA in June, Rohit has his eyes set on a world trophy for his country.
Speaking to Gaurav Kapoor and British musician Ed Sheeran on the special edition of Breakfast with Champions aired on April 12, Rohit shared his thoughts on his future as an India cricketer.
Last year, under his guidance, India reached the finals of the 2023 World Cup, remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament. That run, however, ended on the day of the final, with Australia beating the hosts by six wickets to lift the trophy for the record sixth time. Although India failed to end its trophy drought in ICC tournaments, Rohit made headlines for his batting during the event, scoring 597 runs.
Outlining his plans, Rohit, while answering Sheeran’s question on retirement, said, "I haven't really thought about retirement. But, I don't know where life takes you. I am still playing well at this point in time - so I am thinking I am going to continue for a few more years and then, I don't know. I really want to win the World Cup and there is a WTC final in 2025, hopefully, India makes it," said Rohit.

Rohit’s Indian Team was the favourites to win the tournament at home, and they performed like one, winning all games with utter domination. However, when D-day arrived, they fell shy of their target and came second in the race for the world title.
Reflecting on India’s performance, Rohit said he couldn’t think of a reason to lose the final (to Australia) after a stunning win in the semis against New Zealand. Later, he admitted the team endured a bad day at work against the former champions.
"50-over World Cup for me is the actual World Cup. We've grown up watching that World Cup. More importantly, it was happening in India in front of our home crowd. We played so well up until that final. When we won the semi-finals, I thought, now we're just a step away. We're doing all the things right."
"What's the one thing that can make us lose the World Cup? Not a single thing came to my mind. Because I thought we ticked all the boxes, we were playing good cricket. Confidence was there."
"We were all supposed to have one bad day and that I guess was our bad day. Don't think we played bad cricket in that final, certain things didn't go our way. But Australia were slightly better than us," the India captain concluded.
