India batter Prithvi Shaw's career has already seen several ups and downs. While he is striving hard to become a regular for Team India across formats even as he has been piling up big scores in the&nbsp;domestic circuit at regular intervals, he continues to face hurdles from time to time. After a roaring start for&nbsp;Northamptonshire in the One-Day Cup 2023, he suffered a knee injury in mid-August.

Now, as per a report, in ESPNCricinfo,&nbsp;Shaw&nbsp;is set to miss the majority of&nbsp;India's 2023-24 domestic season which gets underway with the Irani Cup in Rajkot on October 1. He is expected to be out of action for three to four months.

The 23-year-old Shaw suffered&nbsp;the injury while representing&nbsp;Northamptonshire in the One-Day championship fixture against Durham. Later,&nbsp;subsequent scans made it clear that the injury was a lot worse than initially thought. He was off to a flying start for Northamptonshire, scoring 244 and 125 not out in four outings.

After initially consulting a surgeon in London,&nbsp;Shaw has returned to the NCA in Bengaluru for another assessment. At present, the medical team is examining all possible options regarding his treatment so as to avoid surgery.

A Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) official told ESPNcricinfo that they would adopt a wait-and-watch approach with Shaw and remain in touch with the NCA regarding the possibility of the Indian batter being&nbsp;ready for the Ranji Trophy in January.

For now, Shaw is certain to be out of action for the limited-overs competitions commencing with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy next month, on October 16.

Shaw was part of the Indian team during their home T20Is versus New Zealand early this year. However, he didn't get a game before going through a rough patch in IPL 2023, where he managed only 106 runs for Delhi Capitals (DC) in eight games.&nbsp;

Notably, the right-hander has confirmed a return to Northants next season, where he will represent the team&nbsp;across formats.

Big blow to Prithvi Shaw! Star India batter out of majority of domestic season due to knee injury

Team India pulled off a clinical display to beat Sri Lanka by 41 runs in the Super Four clash of Asia Cup 2023, in Colombo, on Tuesday (September 12). Beating Pakistan by 228 runs in their opening game of the second round, on Monday (September 11), India also went past the Lankans&nbsp;to book a spot in Sunday's&nbsp;(September 17) tournament final. Batting first, India only managed 213 all-out in 49.1 overs but rode on Kuldeep Yadav's four-fer and vital contributions from Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah to dismiss SL for 172 in 41.3 overs.&nbsp;

With this win, India cemented their spot in the Asia Cup final, where they will take on the winner of the Sri Lanka versus Pakistan face-off, to be held on September 14 in Colombo. Talking about Rohit Sharma &amp; Co., they now have a much-needed two-day break before their last game in the Super Four (versus Bangladesh on September 15). India was on the field for three successive days after their game versus Pakistan -- which kicked off on September 10 -- got stretched to the reserve day, on Monday (September 11), due to rain and a wet outfield. Indian stumper KL Rahul reacted to the team being on the field for three days on the trot and returning with two back-to-back wins.&nbsp;

<h2>'It was a physical challenge for us'</h2>

After the SL win, Rahul&nbsp;told the broadcasters, "It was amazing throughout. It was a physical challenge for us. The conditions were not ideal. it tested us a lot and I think I was happy to see the intensity of all of us. Obviously happy to contribute to the team. Wanted to give partnerships for the team. I was out for 4-5 months so will take it whatever it comes."

Rahul further added, "We build trust as a team and enjoy playing with each other. We are happy to get the win in the end. Playing for three days in a row was tough and glad we passed the test."

Rahul was drafted into the playing XI at the last minute ahead of India's face-off versus Pakistan on Sunday. He ended with a fine 111 not out and looked good during the SL game as well, returning with a sublime 39 and being sharp behind the stumps. He has made his international return after a long gap during the Super Four stage and will be desperate to help India win the Asia Cup final on Sunday.&nbsp;

Asia Cup: Kohli, Rohit create history, become fastest to complete 5k ODI runs as pair during Ind-SL tie

The Asia Cup 2023 edition has been a huge letdown for cricket fans across the globe. The continental tournament kicked off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan before the action shifted completely to Colombo, Sri Lanka for the Super Four round. While the multi-nation event is being held to help the participating teams prepare for the upcoming ODI World Cup, which starts early next month, but a lot of games have been interrupted due to persistent rain in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

During the Super Four game between India and Pakistan, which has been pushed to the reserve day on Monday (September 10) due to rain and wet outfield, former Indian cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri opined on why Dubai was not considered as host for the Asia Cup.

It is to be noted that Dubai was also in talks to become joint-hosts or the sole host but got ruled out eventually. Shastri has backed the decision as he feels the hot and humid conditions in Dubai would have 'finished' players before the ODI World Cup in India, in October-November.

<h2>'Dubai is so hot… for a 50-over game, these players would have been finished'</h2>

Shastri said on the Cricket Live Show on Star Sports, "If you actually see at this moment in time, there is rain everywhere. You know, there was talk about that it could have been played in Dubai. Dubai is so hot… for a 50-over game, these players would have been finished. It's unforeseen circumstances, it’s a calamity that can happen naturally. You look at Bangladesh, northern India, Mumbai, the coastline of India… there is rain everywhere."

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram backed Shastri's views and added, "I know it’s frustrating for the players and the fans back home in India, Pakistan and worldwide as well but this thing you cannot control. A lot of people are criticising a lot of people regarding the Asia Cup but this decision has been made. There is no point criticising now, nothing can happen. At present, the India-Pakistan Super Four face-off has resumed in Colombo on Monday evening. India are aiming for a big score after a fine start from openers Rohit Sharma (56) and Shubman Gill (58) after Babar Azam-led Pakistan opted to bowl first on Sunday (September 10).

Ravi Shastri explains why Dubai was deprived of hosting Asia Cup despite persistent rain in Sri Lanka

During the rain break of the India-Pakistan Super 4 Asia Cup clash, on Sunday (September 10), former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar stated that Indian all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja are not in the same league as Yuvraj Singh. Manjrekar's statements came following former Pakistan speedster Waqar Younis' words of praise for Hardik and Jadeja.&nbsp;

"Look at what Hardik and Jadeja bring to the table. They are well equipped with both bat and ball. Especially Hardik Pandya - the way he batted against Pakistan - I think he is a really destructive batter at No. 6. Any team would love to have someone like him. He is aggressive, and now as we saw in the previous match, he is very sensitive and smart," Younis told Star Sports.

In response, Manjrekar stated that Yuvraj was on another level, referring to him as "India's best white-ball batter". In this regard, he commented, "Yuvraj is arguably India's best white-ball batter. He could win games and was in a different league. Hardik and Jadeja, with due respect, aren't quite there. These two are far better bowlers than Yuvraj Singh, but because of that, one discipline was so disciplined."

Talking about Yuvraj, he ended as one of India's finest white-ball cricketers, ending with over 8,500 ODI runs and was a key player in India's victorious campaigns in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup.

To this, the Pakistani intervened and asked, "Not even Hardik Pandya? With the kind of batting that he has shown? I am not comparing them but the intention is there."

Manjrekar replied by saying, "He has the potential but when I see him at this stage, it's not a guarantee that he will come and bowl all 10 overs like one of the mainstream bowlers. I see him as more of a batting all-rounder and he batted really well in the last game," Manjrekar said.

"So yes, they have this combined skill to make the kind of contribution made but one discipline of Yuvraj Singh, like I said, was at a different level. In pitches that help Jadeja the bowler, his batting will come through but Hardik the batter doesn't need a bad ball or loose ball to decide that this needs to go."

Both Hardik and Jadeja are an integral part of the Indian white-ball teams. The duo's form will be essential for India in the upcoming ODI World Cup, which kicks off in India on October 05. As of now, both have contributed to India in the ongoing rain-hit Asia Cup. Hardik top-scored for India in their group stage clash versus Pakistan (scoring an impressive 87) whereas Jadeja was India's top wicket-taker in their face-off versus Nepal (returning with 3 for 40).&nbsp;

Asia Cup: Yuvraj was in a different league, Hardik & Jadeja aren't quite there, claims Manjrekar

While India and Pakistan keenly wait for the rain to stop for the marquee Asia Cup clash to get underway on the reserve day in Colombo, the latest reports suggest a gloomy picture for the Men in Blue regarding this tournament.

Since all Super Four matches and the final will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium in the capital city, the rain is likely to again play spoilsport in India’s next tie against co-host Sri Lanka at the same venue on Tuesday, September 12, trimming down their chances of qualifying for the final.

With rain predicted on Monday, chances of the India-Pakistan match getting underway, let alone going for the result, look bleak, meaning India could face trouble in making it to the top two after the end of the Super Four Stage.&nbsp;

While Sri Lanka (alongside Pakistan) already has one win (and two points) under their belt, even a washout against India would grant them one point, giving them an advantage over India (who would be on two points from two washed-out matches) in case of rain disruption on Tuesday.

At this stage, both Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be on three points each, and the winner of their clash will seal the top spot. On the flip side, India, with two points in their kitty, will hope the rain doesn’t spoil their chances during the game against Bangladesh on Friday, September 15.&nbsp;

If the rain stays away and India manages to beat Bangladesh, they will reach four points, enough to make it to the finals of Asia Cup 2023.

On Sunday, the India-Pakistan match got underway, with the Indian Team batting first. Unlike previously, when they got reduced to 66 for four at one stage after being asked to bat first, the picture was completely different this time.&nbsp;

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gil stitched a massive 121-run stand inside 17 overs, with both openers completing their respective fifties. Although they were looking strong to lay a foundation for a massive total, two quick wickets in consecutive overs broke the rhythm.&nbsp;

While Shadab Khan removed Rohit on 56 off 49 balls, Shaheen, who went for runs earlier, got the big fish Shubman Gill out on 58.

Before rain interrupted play in Colombo, India’s scorecard read 147 for two in 24.1 overs, with Virat Kohli (8*) and KL Rahul (17*) at the crease.

While India and Pakistan keenly wait for the rain to stop for the marquee Asia Cup clash to get underway on the reserve day in Colombo, the latest reports suggest a gloomy picture for the Men in Blue regarding this tournament.

With rain predicted on Monday, chances of the India-Pakistan match getting underway, let alone going for the result, look bleak, meaning India could face trouble in making it to the top two after the end of the Super Four Stage. ALSO READ: Ind vs Pak, Asia Cup: Sunil Gavaskar, Harbhajan Singh opine on injury-prone Shreyas Iyer While Sri Lanka (alongside Pakistan) already has one win (and two points) under their belt, even a washout against India would grant them one point, giving them an advantage over India (who would be on two points from two washed-out matches) in case of rain disruption on Tuesday. At this stage, both Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be on three points each, and the winner of their clash will seal the top spot. On the flip side, India, with two points in their kitty, will hope the rain doesn’t spoil their chances during the game against Bangladesh on Friday, September 15. If the rain stays away and India manages to beat Bangladesh, they will reach four points, enough to make it to the finals of Asia Cup 2023. On Sunday, the India-Pakistan match got underway, with the Indian Team batting first. Unlike previously, when they got reduced to 66 for four at one stage after being asked to bat first, the picture was completely different this time. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gil stitched a massive 121-run stand inside 17 overs, with both openers completing their respective fifties. Although they were looking strong to lay a foundation for a massive total, two quick wickets in consecutive overs broke the rhythm. Outside of the final on September 17, a reserve day was added for the India vs. Pakistan Super Four game, which got activated after Sunday’s play was called off. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Asia Cup: India's chances of qualifying for final look bleak as rain to play spoilsport in Sri Lanka tie

Shubman Gill has his eyes set on the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition, which will kick off in India on October 05. The Indian opener, who is currently playing&nbsp;in the Asia Cup 2023 edition, says that his aim is to win the home ODI WC title, where the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will open their campaign on October 08, in Chennai, versus Australia. Gill will be one of the most important batters for India in the mega event, especially given how impressive he has been in 2023.

In the ongoing calendar year, Gill has a double ton, two centuries and four half-centuries in the 50-over format. In addition, he struck three hundreds in IPL 2023 and scored his maiden T20I ton earlier&nbsp;this year. Moreover, he also slammed an impressive 128 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2022/23 edition during the home Tests against Australia. Thus, Gill will be confident going into his maiden World Cup and will hope for more big knocks in the games in the run-up to the WC opener.&nbsp;

Speaking to the official broadcasters during the Super 4 round of the Asia Cup, in Colombo, Gill said&nbsp;that his goal was to win the World Cup. The 24-year-old mentioned, "The most important goal for me as a player right now is to win World Cup 2023. I recall being young when India won the World Cup in 2011. The mindset is to swiftly read the wicket and access the positions."

Gill added, “As a batsman, it is critical to quickly access the position and understand the speed. So the planning and play are all based on that. Mindset plays an important role as one has to switch mentally, like from an ODI mentality to a T20 one. The faster you switch, the faster your body adapts; thus, I believe being able to mentally switch is important."

The right-hander has been among the runs in the ongoing continental tournament -- jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. While missing out in India's group stage clash versus Pakistan, he came to his own with a sublime 67 not out versus Nepal and struck a praiseworthy 58 in India's ongoing Super 4 tie versus arch-rivals Pakistan. The game kicked off on Sunday (September 10), in Colombo, with Babar Azam &amp; Co. opting to bowl first. India rode on Gill and captain Rohit Sharma's&nbsp;(56) fifties to stitch a solid 121-run opening stand.&nbsp;

After Gill and Rohit's departures, India were well-placed at 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs with Virat Kohli (8 not out) and KL Rahul (28-ball 17*) in the middle before rain and wet outfield pushed the game to the reserve day. The proceedings will resume on Monday (September 11) with India looking for a big score.

Asia Cup: Most important goal is to win World Cup 2023, says Indian opener Shubman Gill

As India gear up for the marquee clash against Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup, Captain Rohit Sharma showered praise&nbsp;on coach Rahul Dravid, one record he wishes to break in the ODIs, and his thoughts on Rishabh Pant's game plan. The veteran batter - who holds the record of the highest individual score in ODI cricket, is close to breaking an unlikely record.

In a brief chat with the Indian Express, the Indian captain expressed his desire to break Chris Gayle's sixes record in the ODIs. While six-hitting machine Gayle has hit 553 sixes, Rohit is 16 behind with 539 sixes in his name. With India, due to play at least three matches in this ongoing Asia Cup 2023, three ODIs against Australia and the Cricket World Cup to follow, he has ample opportunity to go past Gayle and become the player with the most sixes in the 50-over format.

“I want to break Chris Gayle’s six-hitting record. Never in my life, I would have imagined that I will break the Chris Gayle’s record. It’s funny (flex muscles),” Rohit said as quoted by the Indian Express.

Having paired alongside coach Rahul Dravid since taking over the white-call captaincy, Rohit said he has huge respect for 'The Wall' for being the genuine cricketer and person that he is.&nbsp;

“I have a huge respect for Rahul Dravid. First for the person he is and then the cricketer. Because being a good human comes first then you are a cricketer, a footballer or a doctor. He is a genuine guy," Rohit said.&nbsp;

“I didn’t get much chance to play with him, but I now&nbsp;have got the opportunity to work with him in the past two years. He didn’t like to have a communication gap with any player or support staff. His simple rule is to communicate with everyone.”&nbsp;

“We have an open relationship. I have enjoyed my time with Rahul bhai. He is passing his knowledge about cricket to everyone,” the India captain said.

<h2>Rohit's advice for Pant</h2>

Rishabh Pant is recovering from the injuries he suffered in a serious road accident last year. Sharing his thoughts on what he expects from Pant once he returns to the Indian Team, Rohit said,&nbsp;“I want him to continue playing like this. He has backed his game. He is not stubborn, but taking risk is his game. He always says that ‘I play according to the situation.’ He don’t go and start slogging, he read the situation well.”&nbsp;

Despite knowing that Indian batters have been left wanting against left-arm seam bowling early on, and what this genre of pace bowling is capable of doing, the selectors opted to leave out a left-arm bowler&nbsp;in the provisional 15 squad. Besides, the absence of a leg-spinner and a frontline offie further makes it difficult for the hosts to find the right balance in the bowling order. Veteran Harbhajan Singh feels by not ticking these two boxes, India might have missed a trick.

While Harbhajan backs Suryakumar Yadav to make his way into the final XI for the CWC, the 2011 World Cup winner feels overlooking Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal might prove costly down the line.&nbsp;

"I think there are two people missing from the team. One is Yuzvendra Chahal, and the second is Arshdeep Singh. Because I think if a left-arm seamer can bring the new ball in [to the right-hander] at the start, it makes a huge difference in the game. Because if he can get two early wickets… It's not like a right-hander can't do that, but left-arm seamers get a natural angle," Harbhajan said during a chat organised by Star Sports.

Citing examples of how top-of-the-line left-arm quicks in Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pakistan) and Mitchell Starc (Australia) make an impact during crucial games, Harbhajan feels India should have picked young Arshdeep Singh as his inswingers would have been beneficial.&nbsp;

"You would have seen players like Shaheen Shah Afridi or Mitchell Starc, they have a huge impact. When Australia won the World Cup [in 2015], Mitchell Starc had a huge impact, dismissing Brendon McCullum first [third] ball. So incoming ball at that speed coming into a right-hander is always a challenge," Harbhajan added.&nbsp;

While India picked three top-class seamers in Mohammed Siraj, Shami and leader of the pack Jasprit Bumrah, they named three spinners, two alike - Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, alongside Kuldeep Yadav in the final 15 for the CWC.&nbsp;

The host nation didn't pick Chahal, who has been around in the white-ball circuit ever since his debut. Harbhajan said Chahal is a proven match-winner and that had he been playing for any other country than India, he would be in the playing XI, let alone in the final 15.

"The second [notable miss in the squad] is Yuzvendra Chahal," he said. "Proven match-winner. Someone who has taken more number of wickets than any other spinner. If he was playing for any other country, he would have thought he would make the playing XI every time. After proving so much, he should have been there in the team," Harbhajan noted.

Although India has zeroed in on the final 15, all teams can make changes till September 28.

Harbhajan Singh weighs in on India's World Cup squad, feels these TWO players are missing from final 15

KL Rahul has joined the Indian Team in Colombo upon attaining a fitness clearance certificate from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Rahul, who got picked in the 17-man squad for the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, suffered a niggle during the conditioning camp and got ruled out for the first two games. Participating in his first indoor session in the lead-up to the marquee clash against Pakistan, Rahul looked fine, shared chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

KL Rahul was part of the group, including Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill and Shardul Thakur, that trained under the watchful eyes of coach Rahul Dravid and batting coach Vikram Rathore. Rahul started with a few throwdowns and batted in rotation with Iyer. Agarkar said Rahul didn't seem to be under any visible discomfort as he played some drives to perfection.&nbsp;

Both Agarkar and Captain Rohit Sharma insisted on having KL Rahul back in the setup, as he provided stability with bat and gloves in hand. Though in his absence, Ishan Kishan filled in the space quite nicely, hitting a stunning 82 against Pakistan in the first group game. Now, with Rahul back in the side, the right-handed batter could return to the playing XI for the first time since March.

"KL is looking good. We feel this gives us the best balance to try and do well," chief selector Ajit Agarkar had said after Rahul was named in the World Cup squad earlier this week.&nbsp;

"With KL, he was part of the camp in Bengaluru. He looked really good there and has got over his niggle. He played a couple of games over the last two days. I think he kept for 50 overs and batted for around 50 overs too. So he looks good, and we're happy to have him."

Nuwan Seneviratne, the left-arm throwdown specialist, bowled to Rahul over the wicket before KL ran a few sprints in one of the nets. Rahul didn't keep wickets during any of the drills.

<h2>Gill prepares for Shaheen&nbsp;</h2>

Gill, India's highest-ranked batter in the ODIs, was found wanting against the left-arm bowling of Shaheen Afridi during the Group A game. Naseem Shah and Afridi troubled the right-hander as he got out for 10 off 32 balls.

The Indian youngster had a longish net session facing Seneviratne as he prepares for round two on Sunday, as both teams meet for the first time in Super Four.

Asia Cup: KL Rahul 'looking fit' upon joining Indian Team in Colombo ahead of Pakistan tie

India's numero uno T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav, must be in the playing XI during the World Cup 2023, feels former CWC winner Harbhajan Singh. Bhajji, as most of Harbhajan's fans call him, insists what role Suryakumar plays is more difficult and in his position he is even better than Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Harbhajan also feels picking him ahead of fan-favourite Sanju Samson is the right call.&nbsp;

"I feel Suryakumar Yadav is a complete, complete player. I don't think the selectors have been harsh on Sanju Samson. I do feel Sanju is a very very good player, a quality player. But you can only select 15 players. But picking Suryakumar over Sanju is the right call," Harbhajan said in a chat organised by Star Sports.

There was always a debate as to whom to go ahead with — Sanju or Suryakumar Yadav for the middle-order slot in CWC. Although numbers suggest Sanju has a better ODI average (55.71 in 13 matches) than SKY — who averages a mere 24.33 in 24 outings, Harbhajan opines Suryakumar is a complete player — someone who can hit from the ball one, unlike anyone playing in that position.

"Because the game that Suryakumar has in the middle over[s], I don't think Sanju has that game. Even he goes for big shots from the first ball, but the reliability Suryakumar gives you — he can score big. Sanju, I feel plays the kind of cricket where there is a lot of chances that you get out," Harbhajan added.

Drawing comparisons with stalwarts of the game, Harbhajan said Surya (at number five or six) plays a similar role to Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni.

"What he can do at that position, neither Virat [Kohli] can do, nor Sanju or Rohit Sharma. Because what he does it's a difficult job, batting at [No.] 5-6. What [MS] Dhoni has done, what Yuvi [Yuvraj Singh] has done," Bhajji opined.

<h2>SKY is better than any other Indian batter in finding gaps: Harbhajan</h2>

The former off-spinner said instead of batting at the top, where it is easier to score runs, batting in the middle order in Indian conditions is far more difficult. Backing Surya to crack open the bowling attack with his supreme ability to find gaps at will in more challenging conditions makes him the best in business.

"Because batting there is the toughest," Harbhajan said. "Opening in [one-dayers], you know where to score runs. You have a lot of time. But when you go in to bat after 20-25 overs, you need the game to know where you can find gaps to get boundaries, and I don't think anyone in the Indian team can do that better than Suryakumar."

Harbhajan added he would have Suryakumar in the playing XI given his presence creates pressure on the opposition.

"And if it was up to me, I would play him in the team. Because when he is in the team, it increases the pressure on the opposition. Whether he fires or not. Because till the time he is at the crease, there will be pressure because on any day he can play a match-winning innings. He can hit 50-60 runs in 20 balls," Harbhajan concluded.

India's numero uno T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav, must be in the playing XI during the World Cup 2023, feels former CWC winner Harbhajan Singh. India's numero uno T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav, must be in the playing XI during the World Cup 2023, feels former CWC winner Harbhajan Singh. Bhajji, as most of Harbhajan's fans call him, insists what role Suryakumar plays is more difficult and in his position he is even better than Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Harbhajan also feels picking him ahead of fan-favourite Sanju Samson is the right call. "I feel Suryakumar Yadav is a complete, complete player. I don't think the selectors have been harsh on Sanju Samson. I do feel Sanju is a very very good player, a quality player. But you can only select 15 players. But picking Suryakumar over Sanju is the right call," Harbhajan said in a chat organised by Star Sports. ALSO READ: Asia Cup: KL Rahul 'looking fit' upon joining Indian Team in Colombo ahead of Pakistan tie There was always a debate as to whom to go ahead with — Sanju or Suryakumar Yadav for the middle-order slot in CWC. Although numbers suggest Sanju has a better ODI average (55.71 in 13 matches) than SKY — who averages a mere 24.33 in 24 outings, Harbhajan opines Suryakumar is a complete player — someone who can hit from the ball one, unlike anyone playing in that position. "Because the game that Suryakumar has in the middle over[s], I don't think Sanju has that game. Even he goes for big shots from the first ball, but the reliability Suryakumar gives you — he can score big. Sanju, I feel plays the kind of cricket where there is a lot of chances that you get out," Harbhajan added. Drawing comparisons with stalwarts of the game, Harbhajan said Surya (at number five or six) plays a similar role to Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni. "What he can do at that position, neither Virat [Kohli] can do, nor Sanju or Rohit Sharma. Because what he does it's a difficult job, batting at [No.] 5-6. What [MS] Dhoni has done, what Yuvi [Yuvraj Singh] has done," Bhajji opined. SKY is better than any other Indian batter in finding gaps: Harbhajan The former off-spinner said instead of batting at the top, where it is easier to score runs, batting in the middle order in Indian conditions is far more difficult. Backing Surya to crack open the bowling attack with his supreme ability to find gaps at will in more challenging conditions makes him the best in business. "Because batting there is the toughest," Harbhajan said. "Opening in [one-dayers], you know where to score runs. You have a lot of time. But when you go in to bat after 20-25 overs, you need the game to know where you can find gaps to get boundaries, and I don't think anyone in the Indian team can do that better than Suryakumar." Harbhajan added he would have Suryakumar in the playing XI given his presence creates pressure on the opposition. "And if it was up to me, I would play him in the team. Because when he is in the team, it increases the pressure on the opposition. Whether he fires or not. Because till the time he is at the crease, there will be pressure because on any day he can play a match-winning innings. He can hit 50-60 runs in 20 balls," Harbhajan concluded. Veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has lauded Ishan Kishan and hailed his versatility after the 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was named in India's 15-man squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Kishan pipped Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson to be included in the provisional squad along with keeper-batter KL Rahul. The young batter has been in solid form in the 50-over format with four successive half-centuries and confirmed his WC spot following a fine 82 versus Pakistan in India's Asia Cup 2023 opener, on September 02.&nbsp;

Speaking on Kishan, Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "This is not a competition between Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson, because Kishan fills so many roles. When you pick a 15-member squad, you need to pick a backup wicket-keeper. Even when we pick a Ranji Trophy squad, we pick two wicket-keepers."

The 36-year-old Ashwin further highlighted that Kishan can bat anywhere and being a left-hander, he will add more variety to the line-up. It is to be noted that India have two left-handers in the form of Kishan and Ravindra Jadeja among their main&nbsp;batters --&nbsp;Kuldeep Yadav is also a left-hander down the order -- going into the mega event.&nbsp;

“Ishan Kishan is also a back-up opener along with being a back-up wicket-keeper, he is two-in-one player. Now that Ishan Kishan has succeeded at Number 5, it gives India two left-handers in the middle order. Everyone was going gaga over left-handers and they were saying Ishan Kishan cannot bat at No.5, but he has delivered now,” Ashwin added.

At present, Kishan-starrer India is gearing up for their first game in the Super Four round of the Asia Cup. The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will face Pakistan on September 10, in Colombo, and aim for a win to progress further. It will be interesting to see if India field both Rahul -- who is now fit and joined the squad in Sri Lanka -- and Kishan in the playing XI.&nbsp;

After the Asia Cup, India will host Australia in three ODIs before playing their WC opener versus Pat Cummins &amp; Co. on October 08 in Chennai. The World Cup kicks off in Ahmedabad with defending champions England taking on New Zealand on October 05.

India's squad for CWC 2023:

I won't answer those questions: Rohit snaps at reporter during press conference after India name CWC squad

On Tuesday (September 5), Team India announced a strong 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, which will be held in India starting on October 5. While India retained the majority of their players from the Asia Cup squad, they left out Prasidh Krishna and Tilak Varma whereas Sanju Samson -- who is the sole travelling reserve -- also failed to make the cut. Among the notable omissions Yuzvendra Chahal, Shikhar Dhawan, R Ashwin and Washington Sundar.

After BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar named India's final 15, in the presence of Indian captain Rohit Sharma during a presser in Sri Lanka, former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh took to his official account on X, formerly known as Twitter, and shared his reaction.&nbsp;

"Surprised not to see Yuzvendra Chahal in the World Cup squad for Team India. pure Match winner," Harbhajan said.

Harbhajan Singh 'surprised' to see THIS 'pure match winner' snubbed from India's ODI World Cup squad

Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri slammed Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. for their sloppy fielding effort in their last group stage match versus Nepal, in Kandy, during the Asia Cup 2023 edition on Monday (September 04). After their tournament-opener versus Pakistan ended with rain having the final say&nbsp;on September 02 (Saturday), India faced Nepal for the first time ever during the final game of Group A. While India won by ten wickets&nbsp;in a rain-marred contest, their bowlers were stretched for a considerable period with India's fielding being below-par.

Thus, during the match, Shastri -- the former cricketer who is part of the commentary panel in Asia Cup 2023 -- criticised India as they dropped three easy catches at the beginning of the game and remained sloppy with overthrows and misfields.&nbsp;

<h2>'It took those three catches to wake them up'</h2>

"The approach, at the very beginning, those catches going down. The body language seemed flat. It took those three catches to wake them up. By that time their openers were going well, Jadeja came and stemmed the rot," Shastri said on Star Sports.

The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Virat Kohli, and Ishan Kishan dropped easy catches in the initial overs after India asked Nepal to bat first. As a result, Nepal openers Aasif Sheikh (58) and Kushal Bhurtel (38) stitched an impressive 66-run opening stand. While Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 38) and Shardul Thakur dented Nepal's progress and reduced them to 144 for 6, their lower order propelled them to 230 all-out in 48.2 overs.

Shastri further opined, "Put in to bat which had a little bit of moisture and had something for the fast bowlers, I think Nepal did an outstanding job. They will take that score. They went after the bowling. They hit those sixes. Immediately 50 was on the board and the confidence was rubbed off on the middle-order and the lower order. This showed in the last five overs that showed there. It's great." He added, "From Nepal's point of view, just think of the crowd that came here. The first time the Indian crowd has been outnumbered."

Eventually, India got a revised target of 145 in 23 overs and chased it down without dropping much sweat courtesy of captain Rohit's unbeaten 74 and Shubman Gill giving him good support with a fine 67 not out. India have managed to enter the Super Four -- where they will open their campaign versus Pakistan on September 10 -- but they have their task cut out in the field.&nbsp;

On Tuesday (September 05), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's 15-man provisional squad for the forthcoming home ODI World Cup, which kicks off exactly after a month (October 05). Rohit Sharma will lead the star-studded line-up, which comprises 15 of the 18 players currently involved in the Asia Cup. The final 15 sees the omission of Prasidh Krishna, Tilak Varma, and Sanju Samson from the current Asia Cup squad. It is to be noted that the two-time ODI world champions can make changes to their squad till September 28, hence, there might be some late changes. India will open their campaign versus Australia on October 08 in Chennai whereas the tournament opener will take place on October 05 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Talking about the squad, India have gone ahead with batters such as Rohit, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, and Virat Kohli along with the two wicketkeeper-batsmen - KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan, whereas all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, and Hardik Pandya will look to add more depth to the squad. Kuldeep Yadav is India's sole specialist spinner, whereas Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah will form the pace attack. 🚨 NEWS 🚨 India’s squad for #CWC23 announced 🔽#TeamIndia — BCCI (@BCCI) September 5, 2023 × There were question marks over Rahul's fitness, but the 31-year-old has been deemed fit and already travelling to Sri Lanka to join the Asia Cup squad, and, hence, made the cut. BCCI announces India's 15-man squad for 2023 ODI World Cup, KL Rahul makes the cut

Coming off a washout, India would hope they only have greenhorns Nepal to tackle and not rain as the heavyweights eye a berth in the Super Four of the Asia Cup here on Monday. From Group A, Pakistan have already qualified to the Super Four with 3 points, and India have one point from the washed-out game against their arch-rivals on Saturday.

Even in the event of another rain-marred match on the morrow, India can advance to the Super Four with two points, but Rohit Sharma's men will certainly not want it that way.

India received some encouraging signals from their match against Pakistan, and they would want to build on them ahead of the business end of this tournament and much sterner assays in the waiting.

Pakistan pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf had reduced India to 66 for 4 by the 15th over. At that point, India's worries might have been accentuated by the fact that they have a jelly middle-order.

Ishan Kishan was playing the first match of his career at No. 5 in ODIs and Hardik Pandya never really fitted the bill of a firefighter.

However, both Kishan and Pandya overcame their personal predicaments to amass 138 runs for the fifth wicket, cornerstone of India's eventual 266.

Kishan was particularly impressive, as his forte is being a dashing top-order batsman.

So, there was that hint of doubt whether Kishan would be able to make the necessary adjustments to his batting and approach to suit the No. 5 slot.

He excelled on both the counts. As a top-order batter Kishan was susceptible to pacers who could move the ball around.

Instead of trusting his defence, Kishan's method to get out of the cage was being aggressive. But here he had to be defensive.

Rauf, Afridi and Naseem Shah tested his fortitude but for once Kishan showed that he can offer a scratch.

Nepal do not have the quality of Pakistan, but Kishan would like to have a go at them and add some more runs under his belt to boost his new profile.

Similarly, the management will also welcome the composure Pandya showed while playing second fiddle to Kishan, and the seamless shifting of gears the all-rounder did after the left-hander's dismissal.

The adaptability and the no-egotistical methods of Pandya would have pleased the think-tank no end.

Even though the stuttering effort of their top four – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer – against Pakistan pacers could be treated as an aberration, the management would want them to get into ODI mode at the earliest.

Rohit and Kohli were rested for the ODIs against the West Indies, while Shreyas Iyer is making his return after an injury lay-off.

Nepal might just give the trio the perfect opposition to earn some valuable game time and runs.

However, the team top brass might be a tad disappointed because the bowlers never got a chance to test their skills against a quality opponent in Pakistan.

They would have been eager to see how Jasprit Bumrah responded to the task of bowling 10 overs and fielding the length of 50 overs.

Hence, his performance will be keenly monitored against Nepal.

Nepal, who lost to Pakistan by 238 runs in the tournament opener, would be eager to mask their lack of cricketing pedigree with their enthusiasm.

Their biggest hope to make some impact in the match will be leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane and captain Rohit Paudel.

But in the real world, they will be more than happy to limit the damage to the minimum against a cricketing powerhouse like India.

Asia Cup: India aim Super Four berth against Nepal after washout with Pakistan

BCCI top bosses, including President Roger Binny and Vice President Rajiv Shukla, crossed the Attari-Wagah border in Amritsar to enter Pakistan on their historic visit. Pakistan, one of the two hosts of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, was scheduled to host four matches, two of which have been played already. Binny and Shukla revealed they came to Pakistan on PCB’s invite and will be watching Afghanistan vs&nbsp;Sri Lanka game at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday.

When asked about thoughts on India-Pakistan resuming bilateral ties, BCCI&nbsp;VP Shukla said ‘will see later’, adding the focus right now is on the Asia Cup.&nbsp;

On the other hand, the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board Management Committee, Zaka Ashraf, thanked the BCCI’s delegation for coming to Pakistan on his invitation and would reciprocate the gesture if and when invited by the Indian Cricket Board. <h2>India-Pakistan bilateral series is still a far-fetched dream</h2>

Having last played in a bilateral series in 2013 in India, both arch-rivals only face off in ICC-related events or Asia Cups. While Pakistan was granted the hosting rights for this year’s edition, BCCI’s refusal to travel across the border, owing to stranded relations between both countries, saw Sri Lanka being roped in as a last-minute co-host.

With Asia Cup 2023 being played in a first-ever hybrid model, Pakistan is hosting four games, while Sri Lanka will stage the remaining nine matches, including all India fixtures and the finale on September 17.

India’s first match against Pakistan in Pallekele, Kandy, ended in a no-result, courtesy of rain. After winning their clash against Nepal and gaining one point against India, Pakistan became the first team to qualify for the Super Four stage.&nbsp;

Their next game will be against the second-ranked side from Group B on September 6, Wednesday, in Lahore.

Regular keeper and opener Ishan Kishan is being looked at as a backup for those two positions as BCCI is keen on including KL Rahul in India’s preliminary 15-man World Cup squad&nbsp;to be picked on either Monday or Tuesday. Rahul, who was supposed to undergo a fitness test on Monday, September 4&nbsp;at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), has been given a clearance certificate and will join the Indian Team in Colombo.

Kishan, who made headlines for his heroic knock against Pakistan after India got reduced to 66 for four at one stage, has more or less sealed his position in the team for the mega event, starting October 5. Kishan’s inclusion closes doors for Sanju Samson, who travelled with the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2023 as a reserve player.&nbsp;

Going by the latest reports, the coach, captain and team management have locked Kishan and middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav as two backup players in the CWC squad.

As India will face Australia in the three-match ODIs before the World Cup begins, the selectors feel the team management would go easy on the players returning from lengthy injury layoffs, including Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul.

Though Iyer played the game against Pakistan, scoring 14, Rahul was ruled out earlier due to a groin injury.

“Ishan is seen as a backup opener and a wicket-keeping option who can also bat at No. 5. It doesn't want any of the players getting injured right before the World Cup as that can disrupt their plans in a big way. The three-ODI series against Australia at home this month will be a fair indicator,” a BCCI source close to the information told the Times of India (TOI).

<h2>Rahul to join Indian team ahead of Asia Cup Super Four leg</h2>

If India manages to beat Nepal or the game gets washed out, the Men in Blue will advance to the Super Four stage. Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah, who returned home ahead of India’s second group stage game for the birth of his first child, will join the Indian team in Colombo.

“There has been no complaint when he (Rahul) bats. It's while squatting that he has been feeling his hamstring. That has got much better in the past week. He will join the team for the Colombo leg of the Asia Cup. The World Cup team is likely to be announced in a day or two,” the source added.

The Indian Cricket Team will be without its ace seamer, Jasprit Bumrah, for their second group stage game against Nepal on September 4 in Pallekele, Kandy. As per the latest reports, fully-fit Bumrah is said to have headed home midway into the tournament after taking BCCI’s permission and will return ahead of the Super Four stage if India manages to qualify. Though no official word on the same is out, reports suggest Bumrah returned home due to some personal reasons.

His absence means India will bring another specialist, Mohammed Shami, into the side for the must-win game. Shami, who spearheaded India’s pace attack across formats in Bumrah’s absence since last September, was benched for the marquee clash against Pakistan as the team management decided against playing three pacers. Instead, they opted for a bowling all-rounder, Shardul Thakur, in the XI.

Bumrah missed all cricket action since September last year due to a back injury and even underwent surgery in New Zealand. Upon attaining full fitness, Bumrah returned to the cricketing setup during the three-match Ireland T20Is, where he captained the white-ball side for the first time.

His exploits against the Irish side saw him returning to the ODI team for the Asia Cup. Although he didn’t get to bowl in India’s first game against Pakistan in Kandy, as rain washed out the match after India’s first innings, Bumrah would now miss the second match against Nepal and would return ahead of India’s first Super Four stage match (if they qualify) – scheduled for September 10 in Colombo.&nbsp;

<h2>Rain threat looms over India-Nepal clash</h2>

As the monsoon is at its peak in Sri Lanka, Kandy and Colombo – two chosen venues for this year’s Asia Cup, are likely to receive heavy rains in the coming days and weeks. As a result, India’s second group game against Nepal, scheduled to be played in Pallekele, is under the threat of suffering the same fate.

The weather forecast suggests more than 80% rain chances on Monday in Pallekele.

While India already shared a point with Pakistan following the abandoned game, Nepal is yet to open its account after losing its opener against Pakistan by 238 runs in Multan. If India beats Nepal, they will cruise ahead with three points to their name.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, several reports also suggest the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is contemplating shifting the Asia Cup Super Four matches out of Colombo due to rain threats.

Dambulla, a dryer venue, is said to replace Colombo.

His exploits against the Irish side saw him returning to the ODI team for the Asia Cup. Although he didn’t get to bowl in India’s first game against Pakistan in Kandy, as rain washed out the match after India’s first innings, Bumrah would now miss the second match against Nepal and would return ahead of India’s first Super Four stage match (if they qualify) – scheduled for September 10 in Colombo. Rain threat looms over India-Nepal clash As the monsoon is at its peak in Sri Lanka, Kandy and Colombo – two chosen venues for this year’s Asia Cup, are likely to receive heavy rains in the coming days and weeks. As a result, India’s second group game against Nepal, scheduled to be played in Pallekele, is under the threat of suffering the same fate. The weather forecast suggests more than 80% rain chances on Monday in Pallekele. If India beats Nepal, they will cruise ahead with three points to their name. Meanwhile, several reports also suggest the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is contemplating shifting the Asia Cup Super Four matches out of Colombo due to rain threats. Dambulla, a dryer venue, is said to replace Colombo. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Asia Cup: Fully-fit Jasprit Bumrah returns home ahead of India's second group game against Nepal - Reports

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi launched a scathing attack on the Asia Cup scheduling after the marquee clash between India and Pakistan in Kandy, Sri Lanka, ended in a no-result, courtesy of rain playing a spoilsport. Sethi, who was in charge of the board when the decision of Pakistan and Sri Lanka to co-host the Asia Cup broke out, had suggested UAE as one of the alternatives, which BCCI denied due to unfavourable playing conditions during these months.

Owing to strained relations between India and Pakistan, the Indian government&nbsp;denied BCCI permission to allow its team to travel to Pakistan – the original host of this year’s Asia Cup. After learning about India’s stance, the PCB had to compromise on the hosting rights as Sri Lanka and not the UAE was roped in as the last-moment co-host of the six-team tournament.

Jay Shah, BCCI’s secretary and ACC boss, denied the proposal, citing excessive heat and unfavourable conditions during August-September. As a result, Sri Lanka was picked as the second option.

Expressing his frustration and displeasure over the missed opportunity, Sethi took to social media saying, owing to picking politics over sports, players, fans and everyone got robbed of watching a great game of cricket between two arch-rivals.

Sethi wrote, “How disappointing! Rain mars the greatest contest in cricket. But this was forecast. As PCB Chair, I urged the ACC to play in UAE but poor excuses were made to accommodate Sri Lanka. Too hot in Dubai, they said. But it was as hot when the Asia Cup was played there last time in Sep 2022 or when IPL was played there in April 2014 and Sep 2020. Politics over sport. Unforgivable!”

Politics over sport! Ex-PCB chief slams Asia Cup scheduling after India-Pakistan washout game in Kandy

The BCCI senior selection national committee will meet early next week on September 5, a day after India’s second group game against Nepal in Sri Lanka, to pick the 15-man squad for the World Cup 2023, starting October 5. The deadline for all participating teams to name their respective teams by September 5 is approaching and each side would have the leverage to make last-minute changes by September 28 in case of any injury.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will sit with the team management, coach and the captain to select the final 15. Speaking to the media before leaving for Colombo, Rohit and Agarkar noted the World Cup squad could look similar to the Asia Cup one, with a couple of omissions.

While most of the slots are occupied and sealed by selected players, question-mark around numbers four and five (in the batting order), with all eyes on the returning pair of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul. Both returned to the reckoning after spending a few months on the sidelines due to their injuries.&nbsp;

But during the six-day conditioning camp in Alur, Bengaluru, Rahul suffered a groin injury that ruled him out of the first two games against Pakistan and Nepal, respectively. In his absence, keeper-batter Ishan Kishan will be roped into the middle order during those games, as the team management remains unwilling to tinker with the top three this close to the World Cup 2023.

While Suryakumar could get the extended rope as a backup batter in the middle order, Tilak Varma might face the axe after this tournament. In Sanju Samson, India has a backup keeper, but his chances of breaking into the top 15 look bleak, with the coaches, captain and selectors locking Ishan to fill the void if and when required.

<h2>Any exceptions on the cards?</h2>

The absence of ace leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal raised quite a few eyebrows, with captain Rohit commenting that doors are not yet closed for the Rajasthan Royals spinner. Though India could need a turner on the subcontinent tracks during the mega event, trying to make a place for him in the squad would be no less than a headache for the management.

The team could also try a few options during the Nepal game, if not against Pakistan, to iron out the flaws before World Cup squad selection.

Meanwhile, India will begin their quest for the home World Cup with the marquee match against Pakistan in Kandy on September 2.

BCCI likely to announce India's 15-man World Cup squad on September 5: Reports

Ishan Kishan is one player everyone is talking about ahead of the marquee India-Pakistan clash in Pallekele, Kandy, on September 2. With returning makeshift keeper-batter KL Rahul out of the group stages due to a groin injury, Ishan is said to seal the middle-order slot in his absence. Per the latest reports, Rahul Dravid-led coaching staff is not keen on shuffling the top three this close to the World Cup 2023.

The Indian Express reports that Ishan could be tried at number four or five in the middle order during the Pakistan and Nepal games in Asia Cup 2023. Despite knowing what Ishan brings to the table at the top of the order, having scored a double hundred against Bangladesh in an ODI while opening the innings, Ishan will continue to fill Rahul’s shoes in his absence.

Though Sanju Samson has also travelled with the squad as a reserve player, the chances of him finding a place in the side look bleak, with team management alongside coaching staff and captain&nbsp;locking Ishan to play ahead of Sanju, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma.&nbsp;

Since the India team remains unwilling to alter the top three – Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, having Shreyas Iyer at number four – a position at which he loved batting and scoring runs – would further provide the stability it lacked in the lead-up to this tournament.

Iyer and Rahul were out of action for a long time, but upon attaining full fitness at the NCA, both got named in the 17-man squad for the Asia Cup 2023. The Indian players attended a six-day conditioning camp in Alur, Bengaluru, working on gelling together and preparing for a packed winter before arriving in Colombo for the six-team tournament.

The Indian team, to be on the safer side, also included the Mumbai Indians pair of Suryakumar and Tilak Varma as backups in case of injuries to anyone in the batting order. While Tilak is yet to make his ODI debut, SKY failed to make the most of the chances to seal the middle-order slot.&nbsp;

Therefore, the management is now left with Ishan and Shreyas as the first options for the number four and five slots.&nbsp;

<h2>Can Ishan deliver in the middle order?</h2>

An opener in the true sense, Ishan is coming off a successful tour of the Caribbean, wherein he scored three successive fifties against the West Indies in T20Is. The left-handed batter in the six matches played in the number four position in ODIs, averages a mere 22.75, having struggled to get going against the spinners.

With the team management deciding on playing Ishan outside of the opening position, it remains to be seen how he will pull off this new role.&nbsp;

Asia Cup 2023: Rahul Dravid, team management pick batting position for Ishan Kishan as Pakistan game looms

The return of ace Indian seamer Jasprit Bumrah to the white-ball setup has bolstered the bowling attack ahead of the much-anticipated India-Pakistan game in Pallekele, Kandy, on September 2. While addressing the media upon landing in Colombo, his fellow teammate, Mohammed Shami, said Bumrah’s presence has completed the trio (Bumrah, Shami and Siraj) and it all depends now on the team management on who will play on the big day.

Bumrah was out of action since September last year due to a back injury and missed all the action since then, including the 2022 T20 World Cup, IPL 2023 and WTC Final 2023 against Australia. Upon attaining complete fitness, Bumrah returned to the side for the three-match T20I series against Ireland and later got selected for the Asia Cup 2023.

Shami, India’s most experienced seamer off all three, admitted the Indian Team missed Bumrah in the past year.

"For a long time, we didn't have Jassi (Bumrah), so we felt the loss of a good player like him. You sometimes feel like 'I wish this player was there', to make your combination set."

"So having Jassi, especially in the white-ball format, has made our bowling very strong. He's looking fit and he's playing well, hopefully, we have a good Asia Cup," Shami said.

Shami, who has played 90 ODIs, picking 162 wickets, is among a handful of bowlers who is a threat with both new and old ball. Known to be a better Test bowler, mainly for his ability to reverse swing, Shami said he doesn’t have an ego about his bowling, remaining keen to deliver for the team whenever asked.

"I don't have any hesitancy to bowl with the new ball or the old ball. I don't have an ego like that. All three of us (Bumrah, Shami &amp; Siraj) are bowling very well, so it depends on the management on who will play," Shami told Star Sports ahead of the Asia Cup.

"Depends on whether I have the new ball or whether the team requires me at any stage during the match, I'm always on," said India's best exponent of swing bowling in current times,” the right-hand seamer added.

<h2>Bowling in the right area is the only plan</h2>

When asked about his plans to replicate his heroics in white-ball cricket the way he does with the red, Shami said sticking to bowling in the right areas will only bring success irrespective of the format.

"There is too much talk about the white ball or red ball, if you bowl in the right areas, I don't think that there is any difficulty in any ball," Shami said

"There is only one goal, to go and give 100%, the result will come running to us if we give our 100%. So, it is very important to focus and execute, it's a very simple plan," he added.

"To have secured him again for next year already and for so much of the season is really pleasing. I think he was just as keen to come back as we were to have him, so it's worked out brilliantly," Ray Payne said.

Meanwhile, the head coach showered praises on India international, saying, "Prithvi is a phenomenal talent, and what he delivered for us in such a short space of time was incredible.

"He was utterly disappointed not to stay longer due to his injury as he wanted to play some red-ball cricket, so the chance for him to do this next year is really exciting for us all," John Sadler added.

Record-breaker Prithvi Shaw to return to play for Northamptonshire in 2024

Veteran Indian pacer Ishant Sharma opined on the difference in captaincy between Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni and stated that the latter had groomed Indian bowlers before he stepped aside as the Test captain and handed over the reins to Kohli. Under Dhoni, India won 27 out of 60 Tests and led the side to the No. 1 ranking for the first time in late 2009. Kohli then went on to take the mantle forward and led exceptionally well to end with 40 wins from 68 Tests, the most by any Indian skipper. Recently, Ishant pointed out that while Kohli was very aggressive and defined the roles of every bowler, he was given a well-groomed bowling unit by his predecessor.

<h2>'What Dhoni did was groom the bowlers and left them with Virat'</h2>

Speaking to JioCinema, Ishant said, "He was the best. When Virat was captain, bowling was complete. When we were playing under Mahi&nbsp;bhai, we were in a transition phase. At that time, Shami and Umesh were new, and only I was there. Everyone else would rotate. Bhuvi was also new. There is no match for Mahi&nbsp;bhai&nbsp;as a communicator. But what he did was groom the bowlers and leave them with Virat. Shami and Umesh, over time, became different bowlers and then Jasprit came in. So, he got a complete package. The best thing he did was identify everyone’s traits, that he used to talk about one thing with one person and then Iet them be."

<h2>'I realised Kohli wanted all of us to think out of the box'</h2>

Ishant then shifted focus to Kohli as a Test captain and lauded the star batter's approach. "First thing, he was aggressive. If you’re bowling with the new ball, you can concede 25 runs in five overs as long as you take two wickets. The important thing was that he gave everyone defined roles. He used to tell me, ‘You have played enough matches, it’s now time for you to step up. Don’t bowl thinking you have to bowl in a particular area, now you have to find ways of getting wickets’. He went to Shami and said, ‘I know you can take wickets, but now I need you to bowl consistently. That you can bowl three overs as maidens’. He went to Bumrah and said, ‘This is your debut, you do what you do, but consistency is most important in Test cricket’. After 2021, I realised he wanted all of us to think out of the box," the 34-year-old added.

Under Dhoni, India was a dominant Test side at home but had only limited success overseas (such as a Test series win in New Zealand, and a 1-1 series draw versus hosts South Africa).&nbsp;Kohli-led national side remained lethal in familiar conditions and registered some famous wins while on the road (for instance, the 2-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph versus Australia in Australia, an unassailable 2-1 series lead versus England in the 2021 English summer, etc).

Kohli gave up the Test captaincy in early 2022, ending India's memorable era in whites.

Dhoni groomed them and handed over to Kohli: Ishant Sharma on smooth transition of Indian bowlers

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar, who was also a part of India's 1983 ODI World Cup triumph, has said that 'luck of the day' is going to be the most important thing than anything else for India in the upcoming edition. The 2023 ICC ODI World Cup is scheduled to start on October 5 and being the hosts, India are one of the favourites to win the tournament.

Gavaskar also said that the team which has all-rounders will have the edge in the quadrennial event. He gave the examples of Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar who were part of India's 2011 World Cup victory under MS Dhoni.

“More than anything else, luck of the day is very important and if you look at the teams (in 1983, 1985 and 2011), they all had top-class all-rounders. You had batters who could bowl 7-8-9 overs and bowlers who could bat down the order. That was the biggest plus of those teams. You see MSD’s team also: Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virender Sehwag could all bowl. It was the biggest plus. So, any team which has all-rounders (will hold the edge)," said Gavaskar on the sidelines of an event.

“You look at England who won last year's T20 World Cup, look at the all-rounders they had. So, all-rounders are the key element,” he added.

The former skipper was also asked to assess current captain Rohit Sharma's legacy so far to which he said that winning the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup will definitely boost his status.

“At the end of the day, you are judged by the number of trophies you have won, the number of wins you have. Winning these two tournaments will make him one of India’s greatest skippers,” said Gavaskar.

Before the ICC ODI World Cup, Asia Cup is going to be played from August 30 and India start their campaign from September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka against Pakistan.

CWC '23: Sunil Gavaskar points out most important FACTOR for India to do well and it's not a cricket skill

Ahead of India's tournament-opener in the Asia Cup, versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Pallekele in Sri Lanka, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra feels Virat Kohli should continue to bat at No. 3 and isn't in favour of his demotion to No. 4, as suggested by former head coach Ravi Shastri. Chopra feels the former Indian captain is best suited to his preferred spot, i.e. at No. 3, where he has an exceptional record.

It is to be noted that the 34-year-old Kohli has batted at No. 3 in 210 innings and amassed 10,777 runs at an average of 60.21. On the other hand, his record at No. 4 is impressive as well,&nbsp;hitting 1,767 runs in 39 innings&nbsp;at of 55.22. In his latest episode of Aakashvaani on Jio Cinema, Chopra said, “There are two parameters to judge this. First, Virat Kohli’s success at No. 4 is good, but at No. 3 it’s exceptional. A significant sample size reinforces this and his peak equals India’s best. Hopes rest on his tournament performance – if he does well, India benefits; otherwise, a middle-order gap looms. Kohli’s effectiveness shines at No. 3, tackling new balls and closing games. Retaining this is vital."

He further opined, "Just because he has the ability to bat at No. 4 shouldn’t mean that he should play there."

The talk regarding Kohli taking up the No. 4 slot came forward as Rohit Sharma-led India continue to suffer with their middle-order considerably undercooked before the Asia Cup, to be followed by the ODI World Cup in India. Shreyas Iyer and&nbsp;KL Rahul -- who bat at No. 4 and 5 respectively -- have returned after long injury layoffs and would need time to settle down in the line-up. Moreover, India have tried a few backups such as Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav but none have made a strong case. Kishan has a double century but that came while opening the innings, Samson has done reasonably well but continues to throw his wicket away whereas Surya has fell flat in the 50-over format so far.&nbsp;

With Rahul to be out of the opening few games for India in the Asia Cup, Chopra also named Samson as his backup, not Kishan. In this regard, he added, “If KL Rahul is unavailable, Ishan Kishan’s placement becomes key. Sanju Samson can also replace him as a travel reserve - I am assuming without Rahul, Sanju Samson can enter the team. Given a No. 5 batter is needed, selection should be based on that specific condition. Samson, a middle-order batsman and keeper, should be the backup."

The forthcoming continental tournament begins on August 30 (Wednesday) in Multan, Pakistan whereas India will take on Babar Azam-led Men in Green on Saturday (September 02) in Pallekele, Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

Virat Kohli shines at No. 3: Ex-India opener not in favour of star batter's demotion ahead of Asia Cup

Team India, under Rohit Sharma, is set to kick off their Asia Cup 2023 campaign on September 02 when they face arch-rivals Pakistan in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. The continental tournament gets underway on Wednesday (August 30) with co-hosts Pakistan locking horns with Nepal in Multan. After the Asia Cup, to be held in the ODI format, the 50-over World Cup will take place, in India, starting on October 05.

Prior to the Asia Cup and CWC '23, former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar heaped praise on Virat Kohli and pointed out where he becomes 'valuable' for Rohit &amp; Co.&nbsp;

<h2>'I expect Virat to have a great World Cup'</h2>

Speaking to&nbsp;Star Sports&nbsp;in the lead-up to the 50-over Asia Cup, Manjrekar was optimistic of Kohli having a great run in the upcoming World Cup.&nbsp;"Great player who has had a great journey. But people change, players change and skills change as well. At this stage, you see that Rohit Sharma, his greatest skill and impact is visible in Test cricket. I expect Virat to have a great World Cup," Manjrekar mentioned.

Further, Manjrekar added, "With his current state of play, you would think that 50-overs is just the right format for him. On the big stage, he has done it for India on many occasions. You get excited about many young and rising players. But on a big night, we need a player, who has been there, done that. That is where Virat becomes so valuable for India."

To back Manjrekar's claims, the two-time ODI world champions India will bank on Kohli's experience as they aim to lift the forthcoming ICC event, to be held on home soil. Back in the 2011 edition, co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and eventual runners-up Sri Lanka, the MS Dhoni-led Men in Blue ended as the champions with a young Kohli part of the historic squad.&nbsp;

Thus, Kohli's experience of having won an ODI World Cup will be essential not only for captain -- who was snubbed for the 2011 edition -- but for the entire Indian unit. At present, the 34-year-old will hope for a miraculous campaign in the continental tournament, which kicks off on Wednesday.&nbsp;

A good run in the Asia Cup will keep Kohli in terrific mindset before the World Cup commences.

This is where he becomes so valuable: Manjrekar on Virat Kohli ahead of India's Asia Cup, CWC '23 campaigns

Virat Kohli has had a glorious run in international cricket. He recently completed 15 years at the highest level, where he has already amassed over 25,000 runs and his century tally stands at 76, next only to Sachin Tendulkar (100). Over the years, the former Indian captain has played innumerable knocks which can be termed memorable.&nbsp;

Kohli's rise was evident after India's 2011 ODI World Cup win and even when he has not been at his best, he has continued to pile vital runs. Recently, former Australian captain Ian Chappell recalled Kohli's initial big success -- which came during India's tour of Australia in 2011/12 -- and termed his 141, in the Adelaide Test, as a masterclass.

<h2>'With the evergreen Tendulkar still plying his trade, Kohli showed glimpses of his talent'</h2>

"In 2012, with the evergreen Tendulkar still plying his trade, Kohli showed glimpses of his talent, also at the WACA ground, with a promising 44 and 75. His skilful batting against a good Australian pace attack hinted at his talent, and when he then followed it with an excellent century in Adelaide, while others around him failed, it was widely accepted he would be the next outstanding Indian batter," Chappell wrote for&nbsp;ESPNCricinfo.

"Appropriately, two years later at Adelaide Oval again, the newly appointed India captain scored two sublime centuries to almost snatch a memorable victory for his side. Kohli's second-innings 141, in particular, on a pitch that encouraged spin, was a masterpiece and with a little more help from his team-mates would have resulted in a spectacular Indian victory," the former cricketer further asserted.

Chappell added, "Despite Kohli's amazing record and his strong leadership, it was that second-innings century in Adelaide in 2014 that cemented his undoubted skill. He hit 16 fours and one six and scored at the superb rate of 80 runs per 100 balls on a pitch that suited Nathan Lyon's sharp-turning off-breaks. Kohli's ability to successfully play the cover drive - the toughest shot for a right-hander on a turning pitch - was exceptional and severely frustrated Australia's charge for victory."

The Adelaide Test was the series opener of the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia. Back then, the then Indian Test captain MS Dhoni was injured and, hence, Kohli led the side for the first time in the purest format. He led from the front with twin centuries in the match -- 115 and 141 during a 364-run chase -- but couldn't guide India to a stunning victory.&nbsp;

The two memorable knocks consolidated Kohli's Test spot and he went on to lead India in 68 Tests, winning 40 of them (most by any Indian). To date, he remains India's go-to-batter across formats -- despite not being in the T20I scheme of things since last year's World Cup -- and will hold the key for the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue in the upcoming Asia Cup (from August 30) and the home ODI World Cup, starting on October 05.
