Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma opened up on his and his team’s preparation for the packed schedule, including the Asia Cup 2023 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, home ODIs against Australia and the 50-over spectacle. The right-hander batter, alongside the Asia Cup squad, will fly to Colombo on August 30 for the six-team tournament, starting on the same date. India’s opening match is against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele.

Speaking in an exclusive chat with PTI, Rohit said he is avoiding outside noise – positive or negative – as he continues to prepare for the marquee event in India. Considering the pressure that comes along with the home World Cup (especially in India), Rohit knows what is at stake and is gearing up for the same accordingly.

The right-handed batter, who in the previous edition in England was the top run-getter with 648 runs, including hitting five hundreds, said he wants to be in the same space he was in before the 2019 edition. Rohit added he was much more relaxed and prepared well for the ten-team tournament that brought him results.

"I want to get into the phase I was in before the 2019 World Cup," Rohit told PTI.

"I was in a great frame of mind and prepared really well for the tournament. I was in good shape, a good mindset. I want to bring that back, and I have time to do that. Trying to recollect what were the right things that I was doing before the 2019 World Cup as a cricketer and as a person. I want to revisit that thought process of mine personally,” Rohit added.

<h2>'Winning a WC won't change me'</h2>

With 44 international hundreds to his name across formats, Rohit is a veteran in the modern-day cricket setup and understands the nuances of being one in this cricket-loving country. Being around since the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007, Rohit has seen a lot of ups and downs in his 16-year career.

While he didn’t play in the 2011 World Cup, Rohit won two ICC trophies for India, including the 2007 T20 WC and the 2013 Champions Trophy in England.&nbsp;

With all eyes on the Indian Team and its players, Rohit said winning the World Cup won’t change him as a person, as he continues to remain the same and prepare the way he always does.

"A person can't change overnight with his success or failures," Rohit said. "I don't think one result or one championship can change me as a person. I have not changed as a person in the last 16 years, and I don't think anything needs to change on that front.”

"The focus will be on how I can achieve my goals in the next two months, for me and my team. A person can't change in a period of one or two months,” the Indian captain added.

India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer opens up on the injury layoff that kept him away from on-field cricket for around five months. The right-handed batter complained of back pain since the beginning of this year, and upon missing a few matches against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, Iyer played in the Border-Gavaskar series only to get ruled out of the final Test in Ahmedabad in March due to the same.

Iyer underwent back surgery in London and later returned to the NCA in Bengaluru to begin his rehab. After he was declared 100% fit, the selectors named him in the 17-man squad for the Asia Cup 2023, as he further remains in contention for a slot in the World Cup team. Currently training at a conditioning camp in Alur, Bengaluru, Iyer spoke in detail about the back issue that troubled him.

In a video on&nbsp;BCCI’s official handles, Iyer explained due to a slipped disc, a nerve got compressed, which led to the suffering and required treatment.

Though Iyer added he is thrilled to be back playing for India.

Excruciating pain, I was not able to express myself properly about what I am going through. After the injury, I was hospitalised for two days, and then I went back home, I gave myself rest for almost ten days," Shreyas Iyer said via BCCI in a video.

Asia Cup 2023: Shreyas Iyer opens up on injury layoff, says he’s ‘thrilled to be back’ - WATCH

The 50-over Cricket World Cup is just around the corner, and expectations and predictions are going off the roof. With pundits, experts and former cricketers voicing their preferences of players and teams who can do well at the marquee event in India, starting October 5, former World Cup winner Virender Sehwag handpicked a batter whom he thinks will stay on the top of the runs chart.

Considering many top batters are in good form heading into the World Cup, swashbuckling batter Sehwag has picked the Indian Captain Rohit Sharma to finish with the most runs under his belt in this World Cup.&nbsp;

The right-handed batter, who emerged as the top-scorer in the previous edition in England, scoring 648 runs from nine matches at an average of 81, including five hundreds, is tipped to stand tall in this category for the second straight time.

The seasoned campaigner has had a decent run this year across all formats, scoring 923 runs at an average close to 49.

Speaking highly of the Indian skipper, Sehwag, while talking with the ICC, backed him to do well and score daddy hundreds like last time. He added that Rohit is a big-match player and comes across as a completely different batter when the big stage arrives.

Sehwag, who also played with Rohit at ICC events, said,&nbsp;"I think lots of openers because India has a good wicket, so openers will get more opportunities. I think if I want to pick one, I think Rohit Sharma. There are a couple of names, but I know I'm Indian, and I should pick Indian, so Rohit Sharma."

"I'll pick Rohit Sharma, because when World Cups comes, his energy level, his performance goes up. So I'm sure that and this time he's a captain also. So I'm sure that he will make a difference, and he will get a lot of runs," Sehwag said.&nbsp;

<h2>Bigger test awaits Rohit</h2>

The Indian Captain, alongside all World Cup-bound players, have assembled in Alur, Bengaluru, for a six-day conditioning camp and will fly to Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup 2023 on August 23. The Indian Team will play the high-octane clash against Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele.

Having missed out on winning the Asia Cup last year, Rohit’s men will aim to end the trophy drought this time before they get ready for the World Cup.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, India’s World Cup campaign will get underway on October 8 against Australia in Chennai.

Virender Sehwag handpicks THIS batter to finish with most runs in Cricket World Cup 2023

It’s been around six years since the great Yuvraj Singh vacated the number four slot for anyone to grab in the ODI side, and while many players got tried for the same position, none could seal it for good. The Indian team faced issues around picking the best batter for that position during the previous edition in England, and four years later, ahead of the Cricket World Cup 2023, they are facing the same dilemma. Meanwhile, former South Africa legend AB&nbsp;de Villiers has advocated for batting stalwart Virat Kohli to play at number four during the marquee event.

With Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul returning to the ODI setup after an extended injury layoff, the management remains concerned about the batting order in case either gets sidelined because of anything during the World Cup. Though the selection committee has backups in Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan for the top and middle order, if and when needed, going ahead with someone experienced is what would be their priority.

So, who is better than King Kohli for the number four position?

The former Indian captain is cricket’s most successful chaser and a prolific run-scorer, having amassed most of his runs and hundreds batting at number three for India in ODIs. Even at the number four position in ODIs, Virat Kohli’s numbers don’t disappoint.&nbsp;

In 37 ODIs, he has scored 1767 runs, averaging at 55.21 with a strike rate of 90.66, including seven ODI centuries.

Speaking on the same, Virat’s dear friend, both on and off the field, and his ex-RCB teammate, AB&nbsp;de Villiers, backed the idea of having Kohli playing at four in World Cup 2023.

"We're still talking about who will be the No. 4 batter for India. I've heard some rumours about Virat possibly taking up that position. I would be a big supporter of that," de Villiers said on his YouTube channel 'AB de Villiers 360.

"I think Virat is perfect for No. 4. He can put the innings together, and play any kind of role in that middle order. I don't know if he would like to do that. We know he loves his No. 3 position; he's scored all his runs there, but at the end of the day, if the team needs you to do something, play a certain role, you have got to put your hand up and got for it," he added.

<h2>Virat resumes preparation for Asia Cup, World Cup</h2>

The World Cup-bound Indian players are attending a six-day conditioning camp in Alur, Bengaluru, and Virat, alongside all seniors, have undergone fitness tests, including the mandatory Yo-Yo Test on day one.

Meanwhile, both batters in concern, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, are said to be receiving special attention at the camp.

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has made a big statement regarding&nbsp;Mohammed Siraj. The ex-cricketer believes India cannot play Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna ahead of Siraj and the pacer needs to be in the playing XI anyhow during the upcoming home ODI World Cup. Siraj has been exceptional for India across formats, especially with early breakthroughs in ODIs, and has a solid record in Asia.&nbsp;

Chopra highlighted Siraj's record in Asia, which is better than outside the subcontinent, and heaped praise on him. On his YouTube channel, Chopra lauded Siraj and&nbsp;also praised Jasprit Bumrah, who has recently made his international comeback&nbsp;after a long injury layoff&nbsp;during the Ireland T20Is.

<h2>'You cannot play anyone. You will have to play Siraj only'</h2>

Chopra said, "Mohammed Siraj is brilliant. He has had a short career. 43 wickets in 24 matches at an average of 20.7 and an economy rate of 4.78. They are better than both Bumrah's and Shami's numbers. In Asia, his average becomes 16.57 and economy rate is 4.51. You cannot play anyone. You will have to play Siraj only."

He further opined, "His numbers in Asia are better than his numbers outside Asia. So, people who were talking about whether Shardul Thakur or Prasidh Krishna can be played instead of Siraj, you cannot play anyone. You will have to play Siraj only. You should play him."

At present, the Indian players are gearing up for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which kicks off on August 30. India play their tournament opener versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. The likes of Siraj, Krishna, Shardul and Bumrah are part of India's 17-man squad and will be desperate for good performances as the continental tournament will be followed by the ODI World Cup at home, starting on October 05.

A day after the star Indian batter Virat Kohli posted an Instagram story revealing his Yo-Yo test score during the ongoing conditioning camp in Alur, Bengaluru, BCCI officials schooled&nbsp;players on what to post on social media and what not to. While they don’t have issues with players posting their pictures any time they like, the BCCI has asked them not to share confidential information as it is a breach of contract clause.

On Thursday, during day one of the six-day camp in Bengaluru, where the World Cup-bound players have assembled, preparing for the packed winter, Virat, among other seniors, underwent a mandatory Yo-Yo test, wherein the former captain attained the number of 17.2.&nbsp;

He posted a story on his Instagram handle, saying,&nbsp;“The happiness of finishing the Yo-Yo test between the dreaded cones. 17.2 don.”

It, however, didn’t go down well with the Indian Cricket Board, which looked at this as a breach of contract clause.

As reported in the Indian Express, the board officials have verbally asked players to take note of the dos and don’ts of posting stuff on social media. A BCCI official privy to the information told the media outlet, “Players have been informed verbally to avoid posting any confidential matter on social media platforms. They can post pictures while training, but posting a score leads to breach of contract clause."

The third T20I between India and Ireland on Wednesday, August 23 was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to heavy rain. India, however, had won the first two games and won the series 2-0. India's highlight on the tour was returning pacer Jasprit Bumrah who was also the stand-in skipper of the side in place of Rohit Sharma who was rested.

Speaking after the&nbsp;match, Bumrah said he was waiting for the game to happen and it was a bit frustrating as the weather was okay earlier in the day.

"It was frustrating waiting for a game to happen. This (rain) was something we did not see coming because the weather was fine earlier. They (players) were enthusiastic and eager even when rain was around," said Bumrah (not verbatim).&nbsp;

Talking about being the captain of the side, the pacer said that it was a lot of fun and an honour as well.

"It's been a lot of fun (captaining) and an honour captaining them. I don't think about that (injury). When you get a chance to captain your side, you always take it. As a cricketer you always enjoy responsibility," added the skipper. Answering a question on his injuries, Bumrah said it is 'all good and no complaints.'

India had won the first T20I by two runs on Duckworth-Lewis System (DLS) and the second T20I by 33 runs. For the visitors, young batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad was the top scorer with an aggregate of 77 runs in two games - one more than Ireland's Andy Bilbirnie.

Among the bowlers, it was Bumrah who led the chart overall with four wickets in two games - same as India's Prasidh Krishna and Ravi Bishnoi, albeit at a better average.

India will next head to Asia Cup from August 30, which is being played in 50-over format this year as a practice tournament for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup. The quadrennial event starts October 5 in India.

India win T20I series 2-0 against Ireland as heavy rain washes away third match

Shreyas Iyer’s much-anticipated return to the Indian ODI setup blossomed the side’s chances of going for the World Cup glory. Perhaps India’s best batter in this format the past year, Iyer was away from cricket since March this year owing to a back injury requiring surgery.

Shreyas Iyer’s much-anticipated return to the Indian ODI setup blossomed the side’s chances of going for the World Cup glory. Perhaps India’s best batter in this format the past year, Iyer was away from cricket since March this year owing to a back injury requiring surgery. After going under the knife and following rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, Iyer convinced the selectors that he was fully fit and raring to return to where he rightly belonged. Although fitness parameters are as important as form, Iyer’s swashbuckling 199 at the NCA game the past week sealed his comeback into the Indian Team ahead of the Asia Cup squad announcement. Getting exact information on Iyer and KL Rahul’s fitness status was the reason behind the delayed squad announcement. While Rahul was declared fit earlier, questions around Iyer’s form raised concern for Team India. Things changed at the right time for Iyer, as he notched a brilliant 199 in the practice game and even fielded for 50 overs, which convinced the selectors to give him the go-ahead. "He smashed the bowlers at the National Cricket Academy, scoring 199 in a practice tie. To provide the selectors with more evidence of his fitness, he then fielded for the entire 50 overs of that match, which was held at the Just Cricket Academy in Bangalore 3-4 days back," a reliable source in the BCCI said, as quoted by TOI. ALSO READ: Gautam Gambhir vouches for T10 format, says it has its challenges but is entertaining too Following Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna’s return to the side for the Ireland series, the next question was when the batting pair of Rahul and Iyer will be declared fit. While the talk was all about Rahul, given he comes as a keeper-batter in the team, clicking two boxes, officials remained mum on Iyer’s injury status. "For the past two months, he has been stationed at the NCA in Bangalore, focusing on his recovery. It's all come together nicely for him," the source said. Players arrive in Alur for conditioning camp Asia Cup and World Cup-bound players have arrived in Alur, Bengaluru, for a six-day conditioning camp on Thursday. With a focus on fitness-related exercises and indoor programmes, the staff at the camp is keen on preparing the side for the two multi-team events. Following preparing for the two tournaments, Team India will fly to Colombo for the Asia Cup 2023 starting August 30. The Indian Team will face arch-rivals Pakistan in its first match on September 2 in Pallekele. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

How just one good outing and focus on recovery helped Shreyas Iyer return to Indian Team for Asia Cup 2023

The Indian players are arriving in Alur, Bengaluru, for a six-day conditioning camp, as the focus remains on KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer returning after injuries. Though the World Cup-bound players have joined the camp, three out of the 18-man squad for Asia Cup (Jasprit Bumrah, Sanju Samson and Prasidh Krishna) will join the team by Thursday night, as they are travelling from Dublin, Ireland.

While the onus would remain on the fitness parameters for all the players, mainly for those who returned from the Caribbean tour earlier, the camp will work towards the team bonding exercise before all the focus shifts on the preparation for the Asia Cup 2023 and World Cup.

The players will undergo fitness assessments and a few indoor sessions on Thursday. From the next day onwards, all the players will be divided into batches for the outdoor conditioning and skill-based programmes.

As per latest reports, the senior players of the Indian Cricket Team were given strict fitness regimes and diet plans. The coaching staff is said to remain mindful of players' workloads, especially the ones returning from injury – Rahul, Iyer, Bumrah and Krishna.

All eyes will be on the makeshift keeper-batter KL Rahul, who got picked for the six-team tournament in Pakistan and Sri Lanka starting next week.

While he is deemed conditionally fit, his on-field partner, Shreyas Iyer, is declared fully 100% ready and raring to go.

Though Rahul recovered from the thigh injury he suffered during the IPL game on May 1, he is said to have suffered another niggle that puts his participation in at least the first two games of the Asia Cup in limbo. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also confirmed the same during the squad announcement on Monday.

Meanwhile, as per a word received from the NCA officials, also reported by ESPNcricinfo, the staff there is happy with Rahul’s progress but remains careful of his wicketkeeping duties, as the India star complained of soreness after playing in one of the matches organised by the NCA past week.

'It has been enriching': Prasidh Krishna shares his learnings from Jasprit Bumrah during rehab at NCA

India's middle-order woes know no end. In the run-up to the 2019 ODI World Cup, the Virat Kohli-led Indian team auditioned several batters to take up the No. 4 slot. While Ambati Rayudu looked confirmed for the slot, Vijay Shankar got the nod ahead of the former. In the World Cup, India struggled to fix the&nbsp;No. 4 position, but&nbsp;Shankar and Shikhar Dhawan's injuries added to their woes,&nbsp;and the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals of the mega event. Post the 50-over ICC event, India had almost finalised Shreyas Iyer for the No. 4 slot whereas KL Rahul raised his stocks at No. 5, but injuries to the duo didn't solve Rohit Sharma-led India's problems.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors announced a strong 17-man India squad for the continental tournament which includes both Rahul and Iyer. Both the batters have been deemed fit, although Rahul is carrying a niggle, and the two will get much-needed game time as India gear up for the Asia Cup, to be followed by the ODI World Cup at home. Before the Asia Cup, which commences on August 30, India's veteran spinner R Ashwin&nbsp;lauded Rahul and feels he has filled the No. 5 slot with expertise ever since Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni retired. During their playing days, Yuvi and Dhoni formed a lethal batting pair, often handling the No. 4 and 5 spot respectively, and bailed India out of crisis several times.

On his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, "Ever since Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni retired, India were desperately looking for a replacement. Rahul has filled that slot with expertise. He is a definite lock at No. 5 and is also our wicketkeeper-batsman."

According to Ashwin, Iyer and Rahul will take up the No. 4 and 5 spot, respectively, if fit, for the upcoming two mega events (Asia Cup and ODI WC). Yuzvendra Chahal was the notable omission from the 17-member squad for the continental tournament, which kicks off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The upcoming edition will be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Chahal's snub made heads turn as India have gone ahead with only one premier spinner in the form of Kuldeep Yadav whereas Jadeja and Axar Patel complete the spin department. Many former cricketers lashed out at the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors for dropping Chahal. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh also slammed the call and backed Chahal for the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which will begin soon after the Asia Cup on October 05.&nbsp;

On his YouTube channel, Bhajji said, "The one thing I feel is lacking in the team,&nbsp;it's the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal. A leg-spinner who can get the ball to turn away. If you talk about genuine spinner, I don't think there's any spinner in India better than Chahal in white-ball format. Yes, his last few games weren't good, but that doesn't make him a bad bowler."

“I think his presence in the team was necessary. I hope the doors aren't closed to him. It's important to consider him for the World Cup because the tournament is in India. Chahal is a proven match-winner. I can understand his form isn't good, so you may have rested him. But I think if he was with the team, his confidence would've stayed intact. Any player who comes back after being dropped, the pressure to perform is always there," he added.

After India's squad got announced, captain Rohit addressed the press and opened up on the spinners finalised for the Asia Cup. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9."

"We want somebody who can bat at that spot. Axar being Axar, he had a good run this year, and batted well in white-ball cricket, especially. He did not get a lot of opportunities in red-ball but he batted well in white-ball cricket, especially in the IPL. In the West Indies tour, he couldn't get a lot of opportunities because he bats at the backend. With him being there, it allows us the option of first having a left-hander whom we can use up the order and go in to play the spinners. He can do that for us," Rohit stated.

Hitman added,&nbsp;"We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

Chahal, a veteran of 72 ODIs,&nbsp;has&nbsp;claimed 121 wickets in the shorter format and was part of Virat Kohli-led India's 2019 ODI World Cup campaign, where the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals.

'No white-ball spinner better than him in India': Harbhajan on Chahal's Asia Cup snub, backs him for CWC '23

The BCCI selectors, headed by Ajit Agarkar, announced India's 17-man squad for the Asia Cup on Monday (August 23). The continental tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan, is set to commence on August 30 whereas India will kick off their campaign on September 02 when they take on Pakistan in Pallekele in the Island nation. The competition will be an ideal dress rehearsal for the upcoming ODI World Cup&nbsp;which gets underway in India on October 05.

With regard to the 50-over ICC event, Rohit Sharma-led India are preparing hard and will closely monitor the progress of their middle and lower order as there still remain&nbsp;a lot of issues for the No. 4 spot. Shreyas Iyer, who is a top contender for the No. 4 spot, is set to feature in the continental tournament after a long injury layoff -- in early February. In his absence, India have tried plenty of backups such as Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, however, no one cemented the spot (as a backup for Iyer) despite Samson's decent faring.&nbsp;

Moreover, KL Rahul -- who bats at No. 5 -- is also coming back to international cricket after a long time (since his hip injury IPL 2023's latter stages). Thus, India still have lots to do to fix their middle order before the World Cup commences. In this regard, former India head coach Ravi Shastri backed Virat Kohli to drop down to No. 4.&nbsp;

Shastri told Star Sports channel, "If Virat has to bat at four, he will bat at four in the interest of the side. You know, there were times I thought of it." He added that&nbsp;during the 2019 World Cup, he considered changing Kohli's place "just to break that top heavy line-up".

Shastri revealed, "You know, because if we lose two or three at the top, we are gone and it was proved. If you look at Virat Kohli's record, he is good enough at number four."

<h2>'In 2007 World Cup, Dravid and Chappell sent Tendulkar at No. 4 that became a huge controversy'</h2>

Now, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar has shared his take on whether Kohli should bat at No. 4 in the upcoming World Cup. In a segment with Tom Moody, on Star Sports, Manjrekar said, "The more and more you talk about other options like Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli seems to get relegated. He has sort of become the scapegoat in the sense that you bat him at No. 4 and all your problems are solved."

"There is also a cultural issue in Indian cricket. In 2007 World Cup when the team management of Rahul Dravid and Greg Chappell sent Tendulkar at No. 4 instead of opening because they had people like Virender Sehwag and others at the top of the order. But that became a huge controversy. So it is really up to Kohli, an iconic player, on whether he wants to bat at No.4. It seems like a perfectly simple solution, but it concerns Kohli," he added.

He has become the scapegoat: Sanjay Manjrekar reacts to Ravi Shastri's 'Virat Kohli can bat at No. 4' remark

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a strong 17-man squad for Team India's campaign in the forthcoming Asia Cup. The squad includes KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer as the duo mark their return after a long injury layoff. Rahul got injured during IPL 2023, where he was leading the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Iyer got ruled out during the middle of 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, early this year. Rahul suffered a thigh injury whereas Iyer's back issues resurfaced.&nbsp;

Thus, Iyer and Rahul were badly missed by the Indian team management as the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led national side tried several players in the middle order to fill the void created by the the two. With India preparing hard for the home ODI World Cup, set to kick off on October 5, the Men in Blue will be relieved to see the return of Iyer and Rahul for the continental tournament, which commences on August 30. The two will be eager to make the most of the opportunities with only a handful of games left before India's ODI WC opener, on October 8.

After Iyer and Rahul's return, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir reacted to the development and&nbsp;believes the two have to perform if they want to start in the playing XI in India's World Cup opener, where they face Australia in Chennai.&nbsp;

<h2>'It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back, but they will need to perform'</h2>

Gambhir said on Star Sports, "One thing is clear; there is no front runner for a position when you are trying to win the World Cup. Form and impact are important. The players who are in form need to be picked, rather than those who are not. Let it be Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, or anybody. If Tilak Varma is in better form than someone, if Suryakumar Yadav is in better form than Shreyas Iyer or KL Rahul or Ishan Kishan, then you need to start that player. Because the World Cup comes once in four years, you don’t go and see who is a front runner or not. Who is in the best form after the Asia Cup and the Australia series, just as Rohit Sharma had said, there is no guarantee for anybody’s position. It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back from injury, but they will need to perform if they want to get in the starting lineup of the squad."

He added, “I will only look at the form, not the name. Because if you want to win the World Cup, only form and impact from the players will help you win. A good thing the selectors have done is picked Suryakumar Yadav in the team. Because Suryakumar Yadav may not have the consistency, but he has the impact, and the team management should find the most efficient way to use him. So, in my opinion, whether it’s KL Rahul or Shreyas Iyer or anybody, we will look at their form after the Asia Cup and which team plays in the Australia series. That series will determine who plays in the World Cup rather than deciding after the series is over, that who will play in the World Cup. Because there should be a series before the World Cup where your main squad plays together.”

Great to have them back but they need to perform: Gambhir on Rahul, Iyer's comeback for Asia Cup

Rohit Sharma-led India are set to feature in the forthcoming Asia Cup, which kicks off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The Men in Blue will open their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka as the continental tournament will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The forthcoming competition will be held in the 50-over format as it will be an ideal dress rehearsal for the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which commences on October 05 in India.

As India have been without an ICC title since 2013, when they won the Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni, Rohit &amp; Co. have a challenging&nbsp;few months, with the Asia Cup and ODI WC. Rohit will be eager to become the third Indian captain to lift the 50-over mega title after Kapil Dev and Dhoni. Under Dhoni, India won the 2011 edition -- co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka -- where Rohit wasn't part of the squad.&nbsp;

Raja Venkat, one of the members of the BCCI selection panel headed by Kris Srikkanth in 2011, has now revealed the reason behind Hitman's omission.

<h2>'Gary Kirsten felt it was a perfect selection but MS Dhoni wanted Piyush Chawla'</h2>

"When we sat to select the team, Rohit was very much in the scheme of things. Yashpal Sharma and I were in South Africa at that time because India was touring South Africa, and the other three selectors – Srikkanth, [Surendra] Bhave and [Narendra] Hirwani – were in Chennai. So, when we were selecting the team, numbers 1-14, every name was accepted by the panel. No. 15, we suggested the name of Rohit Sharma. Gary Kirsten also felt it was a perfect selection. But the captain wanted Piyush Chawla. So immediately, Kirsten somersaulted. He said: 'I think that's a better choice.' So, that is how Rohit Sharma got left out," Venkat recently told RevSportz during a freewheeling chat.

Venkat added, "We didn't get a chance to talk to him, but again we were also disappointed that we couldn't select him. But when the captain and coach wanted Piyush as the 15th member, we all accepted it. Initially, we had selected the 15 which we all felt was the right one. Unfortunately, we had to make one change, and we had to give it to the captain and the coach.".

Back in 2011, India won the championship by beating teams such as Australia, Pakistan, West Indies and Sri Lanka -- in the final -- to win the title after 28 years. As Rohit missed out on being part of India's victorious run in 2011, he will be desperate to lead his side to the championship this time around in the October-November competition. The home side will kick off their campaign against five-time winners Australia on October 08 in Chennai.&nbsp;

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's 17-man squad for the Asia Cup 2023 edition, set to kick off on August 30. The Rohit Sharma-led squad comprises several star players and all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been retained as Hitman's deputy for the continental tournament, to be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Paikistan. While there were some reports which indicated that Jasprit Bumrah might pip Hardik as the vice-captain, the BCCI selectors have backed Hardik.&nbsp;

Hardik's captaincy was criticised during India's five-match T20I series versus West Indies, held in West Indies and USA. Some of his statements also made heads turn whereas he failed to inspire with the bat and ball. With the bat, the 29-year-old Hardik ended with 77 runs at a strike rate of 110. However, he remains the white-ball vice-captain and former Indian cricketer Madan Lal has backed him to be the next captain but shared an important advice for the talented all-rounder.&nbsp;

"See, he definitely could be the next captain, the way he is going about leading in T20Is. But my concern is not that. Hardik has to perform. He is so talented and has done well, but where is the Hardik Pandya that scored 92 against Australia? That sort of form I want to see Hardik in," Lal told&nbsp;Hindustan Times&nbsp;on the sidelines of the CEAT Awards.

Lal, India's 1983 World Cup winning all-rounder, further added, "At the same time, I am very happy that he is bowling. We need him bowling in the World Cup as that sixth bowler. They have given him a very important role and Hardik has to ensure that he does well."

Needless to say, Hardik's form will be extremely crucial for India in the upcoming Asia Cup as well as the ODI World Cup, which begins in India on October 05. The all-rounder will like to silence his critics in style with some all-round performances in the upcoming multi-nation events.&nbsp;

'Where is old Hardik Pandya who...': Former Indian star backs all-rounder as next captain, shares THIS advice

India announced a 17-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The seven-time winners named a strong unit for the continental tournament, which gets underway on August 30. While KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer return after a long layoff, the squad also comprises Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna. Yuzvendra Chahal was a notable omission whereas Sanju Samson was named as the sole reserve player.&nbsp;

While a majority have been impressed with the squad, a few have raised questions about Surya's inclusion. It is to be noted that the Mumbai Indians (MI) batter has failed to replicate his T20I success in the 50-over format and has managed only 511 runs in 26 ODIs, at 24.33. He even struggled in the West Indies ODIs. On the other hand, Tilak Varma -- who is yet to debut in ODIs -- got the nod ahead of Samson despite the latter's good run in ODIs. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Samson averages over 50 in 13 ODIs. Thus, many believe Samson should have been in the main squad rather than going as a travelling reserve for the continental tournament.

<h2>'I know that he's a player that we all love to watch, but he is....'</h2>

Former Australia player Tom Moody reacted to India's Asia Cup squad and feels Surya is lucky to be part of the final 17. "The player that I think is lucky to be in that side is Suryakumar Yadav. I know that he's a player that we all love to watch, but he is yet to really master the 50-over game. I think he's played over 20 matches now and at a very modest return," Moody said on Star Sports.

“And to me, there are better options available. I would have much rather seen a younger player like a Jaiswal in that side. Or take that position, and play a wrist spinner. Um, you know another wrist spinner," Moody opined.

The Australian further added, "He's a genius in T20 cricket. But the 50-over cricket is a completely different format, and he's yet to really crack the code for that. You know, I just don't think he's gonna do it at the last minute."

India are placed in Group A along with arch-rivals Pakistan and Nepal. The Men in Blue, who are the seven-time champions, will kick off their campaign on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka whereas the competition gets underway on August 30, in Multan, Pakistan, with the home side taking on Nepal.&nbsp;

'There are better options available': Ex-Aus star feels THIS player is 'lucky' to be in India's Asia Cup squad

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's 17-man squad for the Asia Cup. It&nbsp;comprises several star players and also sees the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. However, Yuzvendra Chahal was a notable omission whereas Sanju Samson also failed to make it to the final squad but will travel as a reserve player. While Samson failed to make the cut, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma,&nbsp;uncapped in ODIs, are part of the squad. Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra reviewed the squad selection and feels Samson could have been included in the final 17.&nbsp;

<h2>'Sanju Samson and his&nbsp;fans&nbsp;might consider themselves slightly unlucky'</h2>

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "The first big news is that Sanju Samson's name is not there. In whose place could his name have come? He would have come in place of either Tilak or Surya. He could have become a part of the 17 in place of either of them. Sanju Samson's fans and Sanju Samson himself might consider themselves slightly unlucky because his performances are good in ODIs as of now as well. He has an average of over 50 and he scored a fifty in the West Indies also. There is no doubt that he plays well. He has a little work experience as well."

On the other hand, Chopra opined on Suryakumar and said, "Suryakumar Yadav's story in ODI cricket has not been good. We all know that he is a very good player and we also want his ODI career to flourish but the truth is that he hasn't been able to understand the ODI template thus far. The problem is that you have very little time. " He added, "To be very honest, my initial thought was that if a wicketkeeper has to play in the middle order, Sanju Samson is definitely the second option after KL Rahul. However, if a place can be created as an opener, then Ishan Kishan, without a shadow of a doubt, is your second wicketkeeper."

Backing Chopra's claims, Samson has done reasonably well in the ODI format. The right-hander has 390 runs in 13 ODIs at an average of&nbsp;55.71 and a strike rate of&nbsp;104.00 along with three half-centuries. His T20I numbers aren't impressive but Samson has done well in ODIs. Meanwhile, Surya has struggled in the 50-over format, managing 511 runs in 26 ODIs at an average of 24.33. Varma, on the other hand, is yet to make his debut in the format. He got picked in the final 17 on the basis of a promising start to his international cricket career during India-West Indies T20Is, in West Indies and USA.

India open their campaign in the Asia Cup, which commences on August 30, versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. Samson could've been picked ahead of Tilak Varma or Suryakumar: Chopra reviews India's Asia Cup squad

Stand-in captain for the Ireland T20Is, Indian seamer Jasprit Bumrah is aware of the challenges that await him upon his return to international cricket following a lengthy injury layoff. The right-arm fast bowler will play his first international game since September last year when he leads the new-look Indian Team in the 1st of the three T20Is in Dublin, Ireland, on Friday.

With all eyes on the returning pair of Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna, both of whom suffered severe back injuries and even underwent surgeries earlier, India will aim to make the most of this chance as they gear up for two multi-team events in Asia Cup and the home World Cup, starting October 5.

Though Bumrah’s comeback has brought a sense of jubilation among Indian cricket fans, there are a few thoughts that keep those fans worried at the same time. What if Bumrah doesn’t click the way he used to? What happens to the bowling lineup if he fails to find his rhythm and breaks down given the packed schedule?

Answering all the questions ahead of the 1st T20I against Ireland, Bumrah said he kept his eyes and ears open during his recovery period and revealed even during his rehab, he doesn’t use to train for the T20Is, but for the mega event in World Cup.

"We were mindful of the fact there is no Test cricket till the ODI World Cup. In my rehab as well, I was not preparing for a T20 game. I was always preparing for the World Cup competition," Bumrah said in a pre-match presser on Thursday.

Considering India will not play any Tests till December 2023, Bumrah worked on his recovery accordingly. He said he was bowling 10-15 overs during the rehab to feel okay while returning to the 50-over format.

"I have been bowling 10, 12 and even 15 overs. So, I have bowled more overs, that way it becomes easier when less bowling is required. We kept that in mind that we are preparing for one-day competition and not a four-over competition. I have lots of overs under my belt. You have to keep working your way up. From where you left, you are are little down and you keep working your way up," he added.

<h2>‘I am returning without expectations’</h2>

Though the whole of India was hoping for Bumrah to return in time for the World Cup 2023, the seamer himself said he has no expectations, and that he just wishes to enjoy his cricket and deliver for the team.

"I don't really think about expectations. I just want to go enjoy the game as I have come after a long break. Never been away from the game this long. I am coming back to enjoy as I love this game," Bumrah said.

IRE vs IND 2023: Even during my rehab I was preparing for the World Cup: Jasprit Bumrah

The newest addition to the Indian T20I side, Rinku Singh, earned his first Player of the Match award in only his second game for India. The left-handed batter helped India pose a challenging total of 185 in 20 overs, hitting 38 off 21 balls with the help of two fours and three sixes. Having risen to the limelight following his incredible IPL 2023 season with Kolkata Knight Riders, Rinku brought his same game to his maiden outing against Ireland.

His onslaught in the final two overs had India back on track. The total was enough for India to stay ahead of the hosts as they won the match by 33 runs. Upon winning his first Man of the Match award, Rinku sounded grateful and embraced his moment beautifully.&nbsp;

While speaking during the post-match presser, Rinku said he felt great to be in that situation and deliver for the team, adding he was trying to do what he did during the IPL.

The left-handed batter said he was confident about this game, and staying calm helped him produce those massive sixes.

“I am feeling very good. I was trying to do what I have done in the IPL. I was very confident and tried to stay calm. I listen to the captain (smiles). I am feeling very nice. I have been playing for ten years. All my efforts have born fruition. I am happy to get the Man of the Match award in my first game,” Rinku Singh said after winning the Man of the Match award.

Rinku will feature in the third and final match on Wednesday and after this, will fly to China with the second-string side for the Asian Games T20 competition. Opener Ruturaj&nbsp;Gaikwad will lead the Indian Team in the tournament starting September 23.&nbsp;

<h2>Captain Bumrah lauds young side</h2>

Bumrah returned to international cricket in some style, picking four wickets in two games while captaining the side to a series win. Speaking on his comeback, the ace Indian seamer said he is delighted to be back and working hard to get into match rhythm.

“I am feeling good. Today was a little drier. We thought it would get slower and hence batted first. It is very pleasing,” Bumrah said.

“It is tough to pick an XI. Great headache to have. Everyone is eager. Everyone is confident. All of us wanted to play for India. Eventually, everyone has to work their way up. If you play with baggage of expectations, you are under pressure. You have to keep those expectations aside. The total was enough for India to stay ahead of the hosts as they won the match by 33 runs. Upon winning his first Man of the Match award, Rinku sounded grateful and embraced his moment beautifully. While speaking during the post-match presser, Rinku said he felt great to be in that situation and deliver for the team, adding he was trying to do what he did during the IPL. Captain Bumrah lauds young side Bumrah returned to international cricket in some style, picking four wickets in two games while captaining the side to a series win. I've been playing for 10 years, all my efforts have born fruition: Rinku Singh on winning MOTM in second T20I

On Monday (August 21), the BCCI selection committee, headed by former pacer Ajit Agarkar, announced Rohit Sharma-led India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup. The upcoming continental tournament is set to kick off on August 30, in Pakistan, whereas the Men in Blue will open their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2, in Pallekele as the competition will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

The&nbsp;squad comprises star players, and&nbsp;sees the return of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna in the 50-over setup with less than two months for the home ODI World Cup. However, the spin department does not feature the 33-year-old Yuzvendra Chahal.

Chahal hasn't been a regular in the ODI setup with Kuldeep Yadav&nbsp;doing well, whereas the Indian team management cannot afford to play the two together as Rohit &amp; Co. are focused on adding&nbsp;more depth in their&nbsp;batting.

After the Asia Cup snub, Chahal took to his official account on X, earlier known as Twitter, to react with a cryptic post.

Speaking to the reporters after India's squad&nbsp;announcement, Rohit opened up on Chahal's omission and has refused to rule out any player from India's&nbsp;scheme of things with regard to the upcoming ODI World Cup, beginning at home on October 05. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9."

Rohit further highlighted, "We want somebody who can bat at that spot. He can do that for us."

&nbsp;

The 36-year-old&nbsp;added, "We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

Yuzvendra Chahal reacts after being snubbed from India's Asia Cup squad, shares cryptic post

On Monday afternoon (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee picked a strong squad which sees the return of KL Rahul and&nbsp;Shreyas Iyer whereas pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna have also&nbsp;made an ODI comeback after a lengthy injury layoff. The duo marked their international return&nbsp;during the ongoing Ireland T20I series opener.

The squad comprises 17 players whereas Sanju Samson has been named as a backup. The main squad also includes Tilak Varma, who is yet to make his debut in the ODI format. Varma, after a stellar run in IPL 2023 for Mumbai Indians (MI), got his maiden international cap during the India-West Indies T20Is, in West Indies and Florida. The left-hander impressed with scores of 39, 51, 49*, 7*, 27.&nbsp;

Former India pacer Agarkar, who is spearheading the BCCI selection committee, opined on Varma's inclusion and said after the squad announcement, "In West Indies, we saw some real promise in terms of not just performances but the temperament."

He added, "And it gives us an opportunity to take him with the team, give him some more exposure; a left-hander again, looks very promising. So fortunately we can take 17 here, it'll be 15 at the World Cup. So when the time comes we'll take that decision, but at the moment it at least gives the coach and captain an opportunity to have him with the squad."

Varma is currently part of the Bumrah-led Indian squad for the ongoing three T20Is versus Ireland in Dublin. So far, he hasn't managed to do anything significant in the two games but will aim for a big score in the final T20I with India already having an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Varma's inclusion has strengthened India's batting line-up. Now, the national side&nbsp;not only have another left-hander&nbsp;for the middle and lower order but the 20-year-old can also bowl a bit. It will be interesting to see if he makes his ODI debut in the upcoming continental tournament, where India kick off their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele.

India are placed in Group A along with Babar Azam-led Men in Green and Nepal.

'A left-hander looks very promising': Ajit Agarkar on Tilak Varma's inclusion in India's Asia Cup squad

A modern-day Test great, Cheteshwar Pujara, admitted he was frustrated over facing the axe from Test format now and then. The stalwart of 103 Tests, Pujara said even after giving everything to this game and doing it for the team, he has to prove himself again. The right-handed batter last played during the World Test Championship Final against Australia and got dropped from the Test side after that, missing the two-match Test series against West Indies.

Having returned to playing County for Sussex, Pujara, in a recent conversation with The Final Word Podcast, said he has been through ups and downs in his career, but at this stage, where he played over 100 Tests and scored over 7000 runs, getting dropped from the Test pinches more.&nbsp;

The right heir to Rahul Dravid for India at the number three position, Pujara added the challenge will always remain but is optimistic about making a comeback into the Test side, as he believes he still belongs there.

"There have been ups and downs in the last few years, and it tests you as a player because having played say more than 90 Test matches when I got dropped, I still had to prove myself, I still had to prove that I belonged there. It’s a different type of challenge," Pujara told The Final Word podcast on the sidelines of his county stint with Sussex.&nbsp;

"Sometimes you do get frustrated, even if you have to prove yourself after 90 Tests and five-six thousand, whatever number of runs I had scored, it’s not easy.

Pujara said having attained success at the international level, after proving yourself in every country, getting sidelined plays a little with the ego.

"Sometimes it plays around with your ego. Having been successful at the international level for so many years, there are still doubts - are you good enough? And if you have to prove yourself again and again, [you wonder] whether it is worth it," Pujara added.

<h2>'I still have a lot to contribute'</h2>

With India set to tour South Africa later this year and England touring India for five Test early next year, Rohit Sharma-led side will need a solid number three to make things work on both occasions, and who better than Pujara?

The Test star said he believes his comeback is near, as his contributions to the team are there to see for everyone.

"I keep telling myself that I know I belong there," Pujara said.&nbsp;

"I know that the kind of contributions I have made to Indian cricket, I still have a lot to contribute. I was given an interesting stat some time ago where I was told that whenever I have scored more than 70 or 80 runs for the Indian team, it is about 80% of the times India have gone on to win... or we haven't lost that particular Test match. So I know if I score runs for the Indian team, most times we are on the winning side,” he added.

Getting dropped after playing 90 Tests does play with your ego, ‘frustrated’ Pujara admits

2023 is a 50-over World Cup year, and India – the best team in world cricket for some time now, will host the mega event for the second time – the first time since 2011, when MS Dhoni led his side to victory. What led the Men in Blue to lift the trophy after 28 years? Team performance. Batters, bowlers, fielders – everyone putting ahead their team spirit&nbsp;and delivering on the biggest stage.

Twelve years later, Rohit Sharma’s Indian team has the same aim to accomplish, but going by the recent records, especially in the ICC tournaments since 2013 – it is clear that India, despite starting as favourites for the nth time, still has many flaws to iron out.

So, what’s that one area the team management, the captain, and even fans are worried about? Batting? No, India has enough masterclass. The lower-order? Again no - thanks to the rise of Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja as batters, the Indian team has checked that box too. So, that leaves the Indian team with the bowling department.

ALSO READ:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ipl-what-future-holds-for-chennai-super-kings-after-ms-dhoni-leaves-who-will-take-forward-his-legacy-565804">Explained: What future holds for Chennai Super Kings after Dhoni? Who will take forward his legacy?</a>

Yes, you guessed it right! It is where the Indian team is vulnerable. Plus, the absence of ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah makes it worse.

So, what’s this curious case of Jasprit Bumrah and his injuries?

The premier seamer is out of action since September last year. After playing against Australia in the home T20Is – just ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia, Bumrah injured his back, and much to everyone’s disappointment in the dressing room, and outside of it too, he got ruled out for an indefinite period.

Earlier, he also missed the 2022 Asia Cup in Dubai, and ironically, India failed to win both tournaments. More so, during the T20 World Cup, in the semis against England, India lost the match by 10 wickets.

Following that, India toured Bangladesh, and hosted Sri Lanka&nbsp;and New Zealand for short white-ball series, before playing Australia in the home 2023 Border-Gavaskar series; and in all of those series, Bumrah was out of contention for selection. His injury also caused him to miss the 2023 IPL for Mumbai Indians.

As things stand, Bumrah underwent back surgery in New Zealand and is currently completing his rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Considering his sensitive back issue, neither the staff at NCA, the board nor the team management will rush him into playing competitive cricket.

It leaves us with the thought:&nbsp;would Bumrah be able to make it in time for the 50-over World Cup?

In the best-case scenario, he probably will; however, in the worst case, he just won’t, and if he doesn’t, how is the Indian team going to fare without him?

In all practicality, the Indian team must start chalking out players and plans, as a contingency measure, if an untimely injury rules Bumrah out of the 2023 World Cup.

To begin with, what are the options? The new ball bowlers aren’t there in abundance, and even if there are a few, some are nursing injuries, or some are out of form.

Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj are two outright seamers India will go ahead with in the 2023 World Cup. Arshdeep Singh, the young left-arm seamer, who collected praises for his superb show in the T20 World Cup last year, could also get a nod, while the management might look into injury-hit Deepak Chahar as well.

In another scenario, if somehow experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar remains fit and finds form to push his case for selection, he wouldn’t be a bad option either.

Meanwhile, as the third seamer, Kashmir-express Umran Malik is the front-runner to bag that spot. The others who could also fight for that particular place in the team are Prasidh Krishna, who is also out due to an injury, Avesh Khan, someone who has impressed with his wicket-taking ability and not to forget the bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur. With so many options under their belt, the team management mustn’t find it hard to pick the best bowling unit for the World Cup, barring Jasprit Bumrah.

Although none can match Bumrah’s level or what he brings to the table – especially his ability to bowl Yorkers consistently, add some lovely in-swingers to that; trying to groom someone else to do at least half of what he does might benefit India in the longer run.

While the BCCI, the captain, the coach and everyone going to keep a keen eye on Bumrah’s health status, somewhere at the back of their minds, the thought of having their worst fears come true could prove troublesome.

For India to script history this time and bring the trophy home, they will want to put the best foot forward in each department and further hope that the tentative players slated for the World Cup are far away from any injury, especially Jasprit Bumrah.

Earlier, he also missed the 2022 Asia Cup in Dubai, and ironically, India failed to win both tournaments. More so, during the T20 World Cup, in the semis against England, India lost the match by 10 wickets. Following that, India toured Bangladesh, and hosted Sri Lanka and New Zealand for short white-ball series, before playing Australia in the home 2023 Border-Gavaskar series; and in all of those series, Bumrah was out of contention for selection. It leaves us with the thought: would Bumrah be able to make it in time for the 50-over World Cup?

Explained – Why India should look beyond Jasprit Bumrah for 2023 World Cup

With BCCI naming a 17-man team for the six-team tournament starting August 30, a few old faces returned to the ODI setup for the first time in many months, including KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah. The inclusion of Suryakumar Yadav and the introduction of young Tilak Varma in the squad add value, and Rohit said the message is clear to all batters that everyone must be flexible in batting at any position, even if it means coming out of their comfort zone spot. From having no one to fill the vacant number four and five slots to roping in four players for those places, the Asia Cup squad announcement comes as a success at the right time for India. The presence of keeper-batter Ishan Kishan as a backup to Rahul ticks another box, as the top three remain the same – Rohit, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli. ALSO READ: KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer return as India name 17-man squad for Asia Cup 2023 For the lower order, India has all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja, while Axar Patel is picked as the spare spin option. Speaking to the media after the Asia Cup squad announcement, Rohit said, "One thing I want in this team is to make sure everyone is okay to bat anywhere.” "You need flexibility, guys who can step up at any position. No one should say, 'I'm good at this position or I'm good at that position'. You want guys to be able to bat anywhere, that's the message conveyed to every individual. Not now, but over the last 3-4 years. "I know it's tough for guys on the outside to understand why a guy who bats at six is batting at four, but the message has been given. You don't want to be handicapped or stuck with one player batting in one position. "Having said that, you want to get the best out of players in certain positions. All seven-eight [positions] are open to anyone, that's the message we have sent out for so many years now,” Rohit added. India overlook Chahal for Asia Cup While most of the picks were always on the cards, India opted not to pick either a finger spinner or a leg-spinner, with Kuldeep Yadav as the only specialist spinner in the 17-man team. The exclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal from the line-up surprised fans. Here is India’s 17-man squad for Asia Cup 2023 – Rohit Sharma (C), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammad Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Prasidh Krishna WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Two batting greats, former IPL teammates and close friends, Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli, are the biggest names in world cricket. While Gayle hanged his boots from international cricket two years ago, Virat remains in the centre of things as the home ODI World Cup approaches later this year. Having played and known each other so well over the years, Gayle probably knows a bit or two more about the Indian legend than others. Speaking with Times of India in an exclusive chat, Gayle predicted Virat Kohli’s future following the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, scheduled from October 5 to November 19. Gayle said this World Cup is not Virat’s last as he clearly has another one left in him. As Virat will turn 35 later this year, Gayle feels age is not going to catch up with Virat so soon because of his fitness levels, as he can continue to play for a few more years. Speaking on the same lines, Gayle said with India starting this tournament as favourites, given several factors, including the home conditions, it will be exciting to see what squad they pick for the mega event. “Virat Kohli still has another World Cup in him. I don't think this is going to be his last World Cup. I think he has another World Cup in him. India are favourites, they play at home as well. So, it's going to be very interesting. We want to see the team they're actually going to select. “First of all, the squad, they're going to select because a lot of people are knocking on the door as well. India are always going to be a favourite at home as well. So, that's something that carries the pressure over to the India team as well,” Gayle said. Gayle names his WC semi-finalists The two-time T20 World Cup winner with the West Indies, Gayle picked his four semi-finalists. While he refused to name the team that will likely lift the trophy, Gayle said India being the host, remains the frontrunner and included former winners England in last four. “Don't know who's the favourite, but I can just actually give you a little bit about the top four. I think India, Pakistan, England and Australia as the 4th team. I used to say New Zealand, but I'm going to put Australia,” Gayle added. Meanwhile, the Indian team will play its World Cup opener against the mighty Aussies on October 8 in Chennai. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

The BCCI is contemplating resting more star players for the Ireland T20Is, with the latest reports suggesting the board might also rest stand-in T20I captain Hardik Pandya and opener Shubman Gill to manage their workload ahead of the packed calendar.

The BCCI is contemplating resting more star players for the Ireland T20Is, with the latest reports suggesting the board might also rest stand-in T20I captain Hardik Pandya and opener Shubman Gill to manage their workload ahead of the packed calendar. Considering regular players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will remain out of contention from this short series, the addition of these two players to the list indicates BCCI is not risking anyone as Asia Cup and home World Cup approaches. Considering both are prime players in India’s white-ball scheme for the 2023 World Cup, managing their workload is BCCI’s priority. Given the ongoing West Indies series ends with the final two T20Is in Florida on August 12 and 13 and the team scheduled to leave for Dublin for the slated three T20Is starting August 18, all will fall on how these two players are feeling, per a comment from BCCI member on the matter. ALSO READ: Top star Jasprit Bumrah's absence is being felt dearly, feels ex-Australia quick Jason Gillespie As per a report in the Times of India (TOI), a source close to the information, without revealing any details, said, "Nothing is finalised yet, and it will also depend on how Hardik is feeling after the One-Dayers and T20s in the West Indies. There is travelling involved and only a short turnaround of three days before one flies from Florida to Dublin." "With the World Cup being of primary importance, one has to factor in his workload. Let's not forget he will be Rohit's deputy in the World Cup," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity. With India set to face West Indies in eight (three ODIs and five T20Is) matches in 18 days, Hardik will play a key role in it, and so will Shubman. Considering tight scheduling and back-to-back tours – which includes travelling to Ireland and then to Colombo for the Asia Cup 2023 (from August 31 to September 17), BCCI could opt to rest several top players – who are sure starters for the World Cup. All eyes on Bumrah’s return While the newly-appointed selection committee is yet to finalise the squad for the Ireland T20Is, several reports have suggested Jasprit Bumrah is set to return to the Indian side for the first time since September 2022. With Bumrah sending down eight to ten overs regularly at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, sources close to the update feel the ace seamer has almost regained complete fitness and could return sooner than expected. Following the 2015 World Cup debacle, former England captain Eoin Morgan reinstated the trust and the belief of winning in his teammates and fans by resetting their way of playing cricket. That paid dividends as England emerged as the most feared white-ball side and even won the home World Cup in 2019. Speaking with WION’s Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, in an exclusive chat Eoin Morgan opened up on England’s chances of retaining the World Cup in India and which four teams, according to him, have it in them to lift the trophy.

Currently plying his trade in Zimbabwe’s inaugural T10 League, where he is leading the Harare Hurricanes, Morgan expressed his thoughts on how tough competition the 2023 World Cup will be and what it means for the defending champions to come there and deliver. The left-handed batter, who switched countries in his career, having started for Ireland earlier, also termed India one of the favourites to win the World Cup and end their dry run of winning ICC trophies with that.

Meanwhile, backing England’s top brass for taking the right decisions at the start of the year – citing the example of resting Joe Root for the South Africa ODIs and sending him to play the International League T20 in the Gulf, and instead bringing in more young players for them to get the exposure. Although England is not slated to play many ODIs in the lead-up to the 2023 World Cup, Morgan feels ECB’s policy of giving players more international exposure by allowing them to play in several leagues will benefit them eventually.

When asked which four teams can make the semis, Morgan said, "England, India, Australia and Pakistan are four favourites. Playing 50-over cricket in India you need to have your basis covered, and I think these four teams do."

<h2>‘Excellent India Team can lift 2023 World Cup’</h2>

The hosts of the World Cup, India, haven’t lifted an ICC trophy since last winning in 2013 (Champions Trophy), and Morgan feels if the current team management can urge the players to engage with the ones who did it in the past, it can benefit the Men in Blue – who according to him are already hot favourites to stand tall in the end.

"India is an excellent cricket team and will be favourites going into the 2023 World Cup. Home advantage is a keen thing. My advice for them would be to engage with the people that were there (in 2011) and probably pick their brains. It's going to be a hell of a tournament. I am looking forward to it, hoping don't have too much luck (laugh)," Morgan said on WION.

<h2>Morgan on cricket’s chances in Olympics&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</h2>

Cricket getting involved in the Olympic Games has been the topic of discussion for quite some time now. With Morgan now playing in the T10 league, the ex-World Cup winning captain feels this format fits the Olympics parameter as more teams can play in a crunch window, unlike T20 Cricket – where he feels only handful of teams will be able to participate, and exposure of the same will be enough.

"If cricket was welcomed into the Olympics, it (T10 format) would have to be considered as one of the formats because if you were to use T20 cricket as an example, you would only be able to play five or six teams (given the crunch window of 10-12 days), which is not enough exposure," Morgan added.

EXCLUSIVE: Morgan names India, England as favourites for World Cup; picks T10 as cricket's ticket to Olympics

Ace Indian seamer Jasprit Bumrah has been out of action since September last year after suffering a back injury. The right-hand fast bowler underwent surgery in March early this year and is said to have regained full fitness, raring to go as two major multi-team tournaments – Asia Cup 2023 and ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup&nbsp;–&nbsp;loom.

Meanwhile, India's World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev didn’t hold back while talking about star players missing countless on-field action&nbsp;due to injuries.

Speaking with The Wire, the former all-rounder, without mincing his words, said if Bumrah returns as the pale shadow of himself as he has not played in over 11 months and fails to make it to the XI for the World Cup 2023 knockouts, then the team management wasted its time on him. Since India relies a lot on Bumrah, given what he brings to the table with both the old and new ball, his presence would make a world of difference to the team.

Kapil also talked about keeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who, since suffering severe injuries in a road accident late last year, hasn’t played any competitive cricket and is undergoing recovery. In his absence, India lost its second successive World Test Championship (WTC) Final, this time to Australia by 209 runs.

“What happened to Bumrah? He started working with so much belief, but if he’s not there (in the World Cup semi-final/final)… we wasted time on him. Rishabh Pant…such a great cricketer. Had he been there, our Test cricket would’ve been better,” Kapil told The Wire.

<h2>Kapil bashes players over lack of international commitment</h2>

Kapil also pointed out how the Indian Premier League has spoiled the cricketers' mindset. Referring to the crunch cricket calendar and how for almost ten months in a year players are occupied, injuries are bound to happen.

Kapil Dev insists instead of taking a break from international cricket due to injuries, cricketers must skip the IPL to protect themselves to remain available for the Indian Team.

“God is kind; it’s not as if I never got injured. But today, they are playing ten months in a year. Give a benefit of doubt to that, but everybody has to look after themselves. IPL is a great thing, but IPL can spoil you also... A little bit of injuries, you won’t play for India. You would take a break. I’m being very open about it,”

“If you have a small injury, you would play in IPL if it’s an important game. At this stage, the cricket board has to understand how much cricket they should play. That is the bottom line. If today, you have resources, money, but you don’t have three or five-year calendars, there’s something wrong with the cricket board there,” Kapil Dev added.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has a lot of questions to answer, with one being who will bat at number four at the World Cup 2023? While the regulars, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, are nursing respective injuries but are expected to get fit for the marquee event, Rohit feels having equally good backups will benefit the Indian Team, and none better than Suryakumar Yadav as things stand.

World number one T20I batter Suryakumar recently hit a match-winning 83 off 44 against West Indies in the third game. After getting out cheaply in the previous outings on the tour, SKY – as most fans call him, came good with the bat, displaying utmost skill to help India win the first game in the five-match T20I series.

Reflecting on his (SKY) innings and what he brings to the table, Rohit said knowing the challenges in the 50-over format are different than that in T20Is, Surya is working on his game and remains in the mix for the potential World Cup call-up.&nbsp;

Although he averages a mere 24.33 in 26 ODIs played, Rohit feels Surya’s ability as a batter cannot be questioned. The veteran batter added the team management is also keen on sticking with Surya in the white-ball format.

"There is no question about his ability in the T20 format. The challenges (in ODIs) are different. He is really working hard, and he is talking to a lot of guys who have played a lot of ODI cricket as to what attitude and mindset (to have). Surya is also in the mix. The team management backs him to come good in ODIs, but despite the chances, he is yet to adapt," Rohit Sharma said on the sidelines of a La Liga event in Mumbai.

<h2>IPL star Surya ready for extended ODI run</h2>

After making headlines for his incredible outings for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, Surya broke into the Indian T20I side, and in no time made this world his own. With four centuries in this format (three playing for India, one for MI), Surya has emerged as a top batter in T20 cricket.

Rohit said it is important to give players like Suryakumar Yadav a cushion of extra games, only for them to come into the groove.

"He is the kind of player, you also have to give him that freedom to go and bat the way he does. You cannot tell him to face 100 balls and make 50 runs. It is important to give a batter like him the cushion of extra games so that he finds that groove, gets that confidence. The way he started IPL this year, in the first 4-5 games he did not have too many runs, but look what he did after that," Rohit added.

While Suryakumar will skip the three-match Ireland series, the right-handed batter is expected to get picked for Asia Cup 2023, which begins at the end of the month.

The right-handed batter was among the runs during the first T20I against Ireland, and More, who has followed Gaikwad’s game for some time now, feels he clicks all the boxes and cannot wait for him to break into the Test side. Following the ongoing Ireland series, Gaikwad will lead the second-string Indian Men’s Team in the Asian Games, starting September 23 in China.

The vice-captain for this series, Gaikwad scored an unbeaten 19 off 16 balls, helping India stay ahead of the par score that saw them winning the rain-hit 1st T20I by eight wickets. The star CSK opener has played just white-ball cricket so far, but More thinks it’s about time before two youngsters, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gaikwad, will open for India in Tests.

The former keeper-batter said Gaikwad comes across as someone with a solid temperament, and having played under the leadership of MS Dhoni in the IPL, he must have learned a lot.

"I'm waiting for his (Gaikwad) Test debut. Both (Gaikwad and Jaiswal) are outstanding players. Ruturaj can play all formats, his basics are so correct. He can be the future captain of India as well. He has got a great temperament. He plays under MS Dhoni, so he must have learned things about handling the team and handling the situations. He's a quality player, and I'm waiting for him to make his Test debut," More said while speaking to Jio Cinema.

<h2>Karim backs Gaikwad to fight for a place across formats</h2>

Gaikwad is yet to cement his place in India’s white-ball side, and given so much competition for the opener’s spot in the red-ball format too, former Indian selector Saba Karim also thinks Gaikwad will find it hard to first get into the Test side and then try to retain his place.

While the right-handed Gaikwad has just one fifty to his name in ten T20Is played, he averages over 40 in First-Class Cricket and around 60 in List- Games.

"Yashasvi scored a hundred on his Test debut, then smashed a half-century during the T20I series against West Indies as well. Things are not easy for him, because there are several cricketers waiting for Ruturaj Gaikwad to fail so they can get a look-in. This is when your character has to come out, can you take that pressure? That is why this is a phase where he has to rely on his ability and try to put a big score," Karim opined.

Meanwhile, Gaikwad will be in action during the second T20I, starting on Sunday in Dublin.
