Ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin does not regret not being part of India’s plans for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2023, starting October 5. A Test veteran Ashwin last featured for India in an ODI in January 2022, and with selectors almost confirming the provisional squad for the two mega events – Asia Cup and CWC 2023, chances of him getting a final run in this format look&nbsp;bleak.

From 2011 to 2017, Ashwin featured in almost all major ICC events for India, but following a mediocre run in the 2017 Champions Trophy Final, selectors overlooked him. Though he returned to play the previous two T20 World Cups in the UAE and Australia, respectively, selectors didn’t seem too impressed with his white-ball credentials, and as a result, he remained out of the scheme.

Speaking with Times of India (TOI), Ashwin said he has no regrets about not being in the core plans for the World Cup later this year and that he has stopped thinking about it in the first place. Explaining he is in a happy space in terms of his life and where his cricket career stands, Ashwin said he stopped thinking about things that were not in his hand.

"I don't think like that, because the selection of the team is not my job. I had decided long back that I would not think about stuff that is not in my hand. I am honestly in a very good space in terms of life and my cricket and I try to keep negativity away from my thought process," Ashwin told TOI.

Ashwin added he is not likely to be around for the marquee event, but India’s most successful off-spinner in Tests still wishes to see the home lift trophy.

"I live for the day, and I have no unfinished business. But it's true that I would love to see India winning the World Cup again, even if I am not playing," Ashwin added.

<h2>BCCI set to name Asia Cup squad on August 21</h2>

Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will name the squad for the Asia Cup 2023 on Monday. While the focus would remain on returning pair of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, selectors will have to take some crucial calls regarding the backup player for the number four slot and India’s pacers and spinners for the six-team tournament starting August 30.

Meanwhile, with no off-spinner available for selection for the CWC (given Washington Sundar will be busy with Asian Games), there is an outside chance the selectors might pick Ravi Ashwin to fill the spot.

IRE v IND 2023: ‘I am living my mother’s dream,' says Rinku Singh before India debut

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah made a long-awaited return to international cricket during the 1st T20I against Ireland on Friday, August 18. The pacer, who also led the side, played a pivotal role in India's 2-run win via Duckworth-Lewis System (DLS) as rain played spoilsport.

Bumrah bowled the very first over the match after Ireland were asked to bat first in Dublin and delivered a double-wicket over. The over set the tone for the rest of Ireland's innings as they managed just 139/7 in 20 overs. After the match, Bumrah spoke about how he felt about playing after so long and thanked the National Cricket Academy (NCA) staff for his recovery.

“(I) felt very good. So many sessions I did at the NCA and the practice games. Didn't feel like I missed out a lot or I'm doing something new so credit to the staff there,” Bumrah said.

Asked if he felt any nerves during the game, the stand-in skipper replied 'no,' saying captaincy took his mind off his own performance.

“Very happy to be back and always good to contribute. [Any nerves?] Not really, when you're captaining you are thinking more about the whole team and not just your own performance,” said the 29-year-old pacer.

Speaking about the team's performance, Bumrah said he was happy that weather was helpful for the bowlers.

“Very happy that the weather was helpful for the bowlers. In every game you want more and you always search for a perfect game. Credit to them as well for keeping their nerves in a crisis,” added Bumrah.

Chasing 140, India managed to get off to a rollicking start and scored 47 in about six and a half overs for the loss of no wickets. The visitors, however, lost two wickets in two balls on the fourth and fifth ball of the seventh over before the rain stopped play.

India were ahead by two runs according to DLS at the time players went off and eventually won the game by the same margin to take 1-0 lead in the three-T20I series.

'Credit to the...,' says Jasprit Bumrah for successful return to international cricket after 1st Ireland T20I

Ace Indian seamer Jasprit Bumrah is back after 11 months, but the fans might have to wait a bit longer to see him in action, as there is a yellow alert for rainfall in Dublin, Ireland – the venue for the first T20I on Friday. Per the latest reports, around 4 pm local time, showers are expected, with a period of rain forecast in the evening. The overall weather is said to remain breezy around game time.

With Bumrah set to don the captain’s hat upon his return to international cricket – becoming the 11th T20I captain for India, all eyes will be on him. Alongside him, another bowler who remained on the sidelines due to a similar back issue – Prasidh Krishna, is also expected to break into the XI.&nbsp;

Both seamers, Bumrah (September 2022) and Prasidh (August 2022) were out of the scheme of things but upon attaining complete fitness, are back in the reckoning for a spot in India’s World Cup squad. Though Bumrah is certain of leading India’s pace-attack in the home WC (subject to fitness), Krishna will aim to impress the selectors with this limited chance in the Ireland series.

As the BCCI selectors are reported to be waiting till Sunday, August 20 before announcing the squad for the Asia Cup, which begins August 30 (co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka), Krishna has just one game in hand to press for his case in the side.

<h2>New faces eager for their turn</h2>

Not just these two bowlers, several other players in the team are also keen on impressing the selectors, with one including IPL hero Rinku Singh.

After hogging the limelight for his classy lower-order knocks in the latest edition of the IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders Rinku Singh is ready for the next chapter of his life.

The left-handed batter showed he has the mettle to deliver against the best of bowlers under pressure – something he also wishes to replicate at the top stage.&nbsp;

Besides him, young Yashasvi Jaiswal will open alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, while there will be a toss-up between Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma for the keeper’s slot.&nbsp;

Though per the latest reports, Sanju's mediocre outings in the Caribbean could see him lose his ODI spot to KL Rahul for the Asia Cup and the World Cup 2023.&nbsp;The selectors might give him an extra chance to fight for a place in the T20I side for next year’s T20 World Cup.

Rain in Dublin could spoil Bumrah's comeback as India gear up for Ireland T20Is

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is said to have held a two-hour long closed-door meeting with India men’s team coach Rahul Dravid in Miami ahead of the USA leg against West Indies.

The two powerful men in Indian cricket handpicked several topics and discussed the future plan as we inch closer to two mega events – Asia Cup 2023 and ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Per a report in Cricbuzz, this meeting happened before the final two T20Is against West Indies in Lauderhill, Florida, on August 12 and 13. While the Indian Team was putting up at Marriot in Miami, Dravid drove down to a separate hotel where Shah (who was in the USA for a personal visit) was staying.

The BCCI secretary was also seen in attendance during the fifth and final T20I.

Although from the outside it might appear like a routine meeting between two top bosses, the significance of this shall not be underestimated. With India facing several questions – mostly regarding selection (particularly for the number four and five spots in the ODIs) and preparation for the two multi-team events, this meeting is expected to&nbsp;have covered these topics.

Also, considering the preparatory camp scheduled to begin on August 24 in Alur, Bengaluru, discussions around the same are said to have taken place.

<h2>India suffer setback in the Caribbean&nbsp;</h2>

India’s tour of the West Indies was the starting point of the roadmap to the World Cup, and it’s fair to say the Men in Blue left several questions unanswered. While India reigned supreme in the Tests and three ODIs, they lost the five-match T20Is 2-3 (for the first time against West Indies).&nbsp;

With a relatively younger squad at the helm considering next year’s T20 World Cup in this part of the world, the Indian Team failed to make the most of their chances and fell shy of maintaining their winning streak in the shortest format.&nbsp;

While they came second in the format in which West Indies are considered kings, India has shifted their attention to the Ireland T20Is.

Following that, the Asia Cup 2023 (co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka this time) will get underway. After that, the Indian Team will host five-time World Cup winners Australia in a short three-match ODIs, starting September 22 in Mohali.

After the end of this series, the much-awaited ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 will begin in India on October 5, with the warm-up matches starting on September end.&nbsp;

Jay Shah held a two-hour long meeting with Rahul Dravid in Miami ahead of USA leg against West Indies

Jasprit Bumrah will lead a second-string&nbsp;Indian team in the three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, with the series opener on Friday (August 18). However, the main focus is already on the forthcoming 50-over Asia Cup, which kicks off on August 30 (to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka). The continental tournament will be an ideal dress rehearsal for Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. for the home ODI World Cup which commences on October 5 in Ahmedabad. At present, most are awaiting the start of the Asia Cup with the Indian&nbsp;squad likely to be announced on August 20.

Before India's official squad announcement, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh picked his 15-man Indian team for the multi-nation tournament. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the veteran firstly spoke at length on India's tour of West Indies -- where they lost the five T20Is -- and then shifted focus to the Asia Cup.&nbsp;

Harbhajan said, "I thought India would win that series easily (the WI T20Is, which Hardik Pandya &amp; Co. lost 2-3). But the result has left many shocked and concerned. I was taken aback as well because West Indies, a team that did not make the World Cup, beat us. This indeed is a big achievement for West Indies, but a major concern for India. However, the main focus is already on the forthcoming 50-over Asia Cup, which kicks off on August 30 (to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka). The continental tournament will be an ideal dress rehearsal for Rohit Sharma & Co. for the home ODI World Cup which commences on October 5 in Ahmedabad. At present, most are awaiting the start of the Asia Cup with the Indian squad likely to be announced on August 20. Before India's official squad announcement, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh picked his 15-man Indian team for the multi-nation tournament. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the veteran firstly spoke at length on India's tour of West Indies -- where they lost the five T20Is -- and then shifted focus to the Asia Cup. Harbhajan said, "I thought India would win that series easily (the WI T20Is, which Hardik Pandya & Co. lost 2-3). But the result has left many shocked and concerned. I was taken aback as well because West Indies, a team that did not make the World Cup, beat us. This indeed is a big achievement for West Indies, but a major concern for India. Yes, Kohli and Rohit weren't there, and they won't stay for long, but this young brigade that had toured West Indies has learned a lot from this. I previously said that India can make 2-3 teams, and they still can, but the results are yet to reflect." No Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer! Harbhajan Singh names his India squad for Asia Cup 2023

Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will pick the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 on August 20, Sunday. The six-team tournament, co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, will see its opener getting played at the Multan Cricket Stadium in Multan&nbsp;on August 30 (between Pakistan and Nepal). While the onus would remain on returning Jasprit Bumrah and fit-again KL Rahul, latest reports suggest Sanju Samson could get dropped from the 15-member squad.

The right-handed keeper-batter, who endured a mediocre run in the white-ball series against the West Indies, scoring nine and 51 in two ODIs and 12, 7 and 13 in the three T20I matches, is said to have wasted his golden chance of fighting for a spot in the XI for Asia Cup and World Cup 2023. Besides these numbers, his manner of getting out concerned the selectors more.

As per a report in the Times of India (TOI), the selectors are ready to overlook Samson for the two upcoming mega events, as KL Rahul is reported to have regained full fitness and is ready to bag his long-lost number five spot (as a keeper-batter) in the ODI side. Even with Ishan Kishan around, Indian Team and selectors are comfortable with that one spot.&nbsp;

"Right now, the selectors are likely to only pick the Asia Cup team. The World Cup squad will mostly be picked later," a source close to the information told TOI.&nbsp;

When detailed about why there is a delay in the squad announcement, the source said because the status of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer remains unclear, the selection committee is waiting for them to play a practice match so they can take a call on the final 15.&nbsp;

Though Rahul will get picked, Iyer is said to be away from attaining full fitness.&nbsp;

"Rahul is by and large fit and is 'keeping wickets too, while Shreyas Iyer (operated for a back injury) is still not 100%. Both have taken part in match simulations at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and will play a practice match soon. The fitness of the players who are back from the West Indies tour will also be assessed by the team and NCA's physios. Hence the delay in naming the team," the source said.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Eyes on Prasidh Krishna’</h2>

With seamer Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna back in the India squad for the Ireland T20Is after a lengthy injury layoff, the source said selectors are keen on keeping an eye on their performances.&nbsp;

With Mohammed Siraj and Shami set to retain their places in the 15-man squad, the addition of Krishna will add a new dimension to their line-up.

"Prasidh can generate pace and bounce and will give a new dimension to our pace attack. Before they pick the team for the Asia Cup, it will be nice if the selectors get to watch both Bumrah and Prasidh bowl in the opening T20I against Ireland on August 18," the source added.

Sanju Samson’s future remains in limbo as BCCI set to announce Asia Cup squad on Aug 20 – Reports

Former India head player and coach Ravi Shastri has backed 'seasoned captain' Rohit Sharma ahead of the two-time winners' campaign in the much-awaited ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition. The mega event will be entirely hosted by India in October-November, with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in the tournament opener on October 05. Team India will open their campaign versus five-time winners Australia in Chennai on October 08. They will face arch-rivals Pakistan on October 14 in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

<h2>'Come CWC 2023, Rohit will up the ante'</h2>

Shastri said while speaking on Star Sports, “I think he is a seasoned captain. Come the World Cup, he will up the ante. Bilaterals are one thing. When it comes to big tournaments, you switch on in a different manner. He knows the nucleus of the players. It is about him ensuring that everyone in that batting lineup knows that they don't own batting positions."

"You've got to be flexible with your batting ladder. No matter who the name of the player is. You do not own positions. You got to have flexibility. That is paramount, and use the right guys against the right oppositions,” Shastri further asserted.

Under Rohit, India will start as one of the favourites for the coveted title despite their mixed run across formats in recent times. Rohit-led India fell flat in Asia Cup 2022 (held in T20I format), bowed out of the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in Australia, lost ODIs to Bangladesh (in the Bangla Tigers' den), 50-over home series to the Aussies and also came second in the WTC final (losing to Pat Cummins &amp; Co.). India, under Hardik Pandya, also conceded their first-ever T20I series when they recently lost to West Indies.&nbsp;

In addition, the former head coach believes that the India think tank has a group of 18-20 players that have been shortlisted for the home ODI WC. "The think tank would have thought about a group of 18 or 20 players at least four or five months before the World Cup and then given opportunities to each one of them, kept an eye on the injuries too, you know, whichever players who were part of the mix who got injuries and just come back, and then pick the right guys,” Shastri added.

India will look to end their ICC title drought since 2013 when they turn up for the 50-over showpiece event at home. Thus, Rohit has a litmus test to lead India to the mega title after a long time.

At present, Jasprit Bumrah is set to lead a second-stringed Indian team in Dublin, Ireland for a three-match T20I series which kicks off on Friday (August 18). It will mark Bumrah's international return since September 2022.

Come ODI World Cup, he will up the ante: Shastri reposes faith on captain Rohit Sharma ahead of mega event

Rishabh Pant's batting video made heads turn recently. The wicketkeeper-batter is recovering from a horrific car crash which took place on December 30, 2022. Since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for Pant to resume batting as he is striving hard to make a comeback in the national setup. Despite the 25-year-old's speedy recovery, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra believes that the star player's return is 'quite far away as of now.'

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra pointed out, “Rishabh Pant had posted a video where Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul were seen batting after a long time. Now his videos have come from which it seems he is coming back. He has started batting against the bowling machine. He has started playing against 140 kph but Pant's comeback is quite far away as of now."

Rishabh Pant's comeback is quite far away, feels Aakash Chopra after his batting video goes viral

Former Pakistan skipper Rashid Latif feels Team India would have been 100 per cent prepared for the 2023 ODI World Cup, to be held in India in October-November, had Virat Kohli remained the captain. Kohli was sacked as the ODI captain in late 2021, just a few months after he stepped down as the T20I skipper ahead of the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE.

At that time, the BCCI made it clear that it does not want two captains in&nbsp;different white-ball formats. Hence, Rohit took over as the white-ball skipper and soon became the full-time captain in early 2022, post Kohli's resignation as the Test skipper.

Since then, India have not had great success across formats. They fell flat in the Asia Cup, held in the T20I format, in 2022 and also bowed out of the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup last year, held in Australia.

Towards the end of the year, India lost the ODIs to hosts Bangladesh, conceded a home 50-over series to Australia early this year, came second in the WTC final and also lost the five T20I series to West Indies, held in West Indies and USA.

Injuries have plagued India's run as they still await the fitness reports of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer ahead of the Asia Cup, which kicks off later this month.

Thus, the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team had lots on their plate ahead of the ODI World Cup at home, in October-November.

In this regard, Latif spoke at length about India's current struggles and believes things would have been different, had Kohli remained the captain.&nbsp;

<h2>'India would have been 100% prepared for CWC '23 had Kohli remained captain'</h2>

“If they had allowed Virat Kohli to continue as captain, India would have been 100 per cent prepared for the World Cup by this time,” Latif said on his official YouTube channel.

"Indian team management has experimented with several players and if I talk about their batting, the middle and lower order — from numbers 4 to 7 — they just have not allowed any new player to settle down. There have been too many changes," he further asserted.

The former Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter added that dependence on injured seniors such as Rahul and Iyer might be risky for Team India, heading into the Asia Cup and CWC '23. Latif added, "I would say it is risky because KL and Iyer are returning from injuries."&nbsp;

At present, Jasprit Bumrah is leading a second-stringed Indian team in Ireland for three T20Is in Dublin, starting on Friday (August 18). However, the main focus is already on the Asia Cup, which commences on August 30. Soon after the continental tournament, the ODI World Cup will kick off in India&nbsp;on October 05.&nbsp;

India would've been 100 per cent prepared for CWC '23 had Kohli remained captain, feels ex-Pak captain

Two Indian premier seam bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna, returned to the T20I squad for the Ireland series, starting Friday, August 18, in Dublin. Having undergone back surgeries earlier, both bowlers made stunning progress during rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Upon attaining complete fitness, Bumrah and Krishna are back in reckoning. Lakshmipathy Balaji, the former India seamer, feels both the seamers must first listen to their bodies to sustain at the top level, given the packed calendar.

As Bumrah gears up for his maiden stint as T20I captain (for the Ireland T20Is), Balaji said he must not rush into putting too much effort and should take it game by game.

Although in the latest video posted by BCCI on its social media handles, Bumrah is seen bowling fast, Balaji opines if he wants to make it to the World Cup XI, Bumrah must be careful with his game plan.

Having already missed a lot of action since September last year&nbsp;when he got ruled out of cricket for an indefinite period due to a reoccurring back injury, Bumrah must look into his training and try and get more match practice as possible to be ready for the bigger challenge.

Speaking with IANS, former seamer Balaji said,&nbsp;"With the full fitness already being reached, I am sure that the build-up to the bowling workload at the NCA after surgery would have already given them a lot of confidence and body conditioning. So, it is about match rhythm now, and you need to be 100% sure about how you go about match day, post-match recovery and following day how your training is.”&nbsp;

<h2>‘Important to listen to body demands’</h2>

Balaji, who also suffered the same fate during his career that saw his game time cut down due to similar back issues, said he listened to his body and that worked in his favour.

Speaking on how Bumrah and Krishna must take care of their bodies going forward, Balaji said both must follow the same path and listen to the demands of their bodies.

"Both of them have played a lot of cricket, and aren't young anymore in international cricket. So, they know how their body reacts. I had my own routines when I had the surgery and then came back to cricket. I really invested and listened to the body more closely than before, according to the demands."

"Personally, after undergoing surgery, it's very important to listen to your body and its demands on a particular day. Plus, one has to ramp up their fitness levels to meet the demand of international cricket. Psychologically, you will have a lot of doubts, like when you are resuming your bowling action and how the body will react. So, they will have to progress very, very cautiously over a period of time," he added.

Both seamers are likely to play all three games in Ireland as they eye spots in India’s Asia Cup and World Cup squads.

L Balaji urges returning Bumrah, P Krishna to ‘listen to their bodies’ as India gear up for packed winter

With less than two months left for the ODI World Cup&nbsp;in India in October-November, India is still figuring out how to fix their middle order. The No. 4 spot remains a huge cause of concern for Team India in recent years. They were sweating hard on finalising a No. 4 prior to the 2019 World Cup as well, and Shreyas Iyer's injury has once again put Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. in a spot of bother.

India are currently awaiting the fitness report of KL Rahul and Iyer, two of their middle-order batters, ahead of their Asia Cup squad announcement. If they are fit, the two&nbsp;will solve India's middle-order crisis going into the home World Cup. If not, India have some tough calls to make. Amid all this, former India coach Ravi Shastri admitted that he wanted Kohli to bat at No. 4 during the last World Cup, held in England and Wales.

Discussing India's squad for the upcoming ICC event, Shastri revealed on Star Sports' Selection Day,&nbsp;"If Virat has to bat at four, he will bat at four in the interest of the side. You know, there were times I thought of it. Even in the previous two World Cups, when I was coach in 2019, I thought I might have discussed that with MSK as well of him batting at four just to break that top heavy line up."

"You know, because if we lost two or three at the top, we were gone and it was proved so just for reaching that the experience. And if you look at Virat Kohli's record, he is good enough at number four,"&nbsp;Shastri added.

Under Kohli, India reached the semi-finals of the 2019 edition, losing to eventual runners-up New Zealand by 18 runs in chase of 240.

India have been a top-heavy side for a long time, especially since Rohit and Kohli's rise in the format. Till MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Kedar Jadhav's presence, India did not feel a void in the middle and lower-order but same hasn't been the case since their departures. Injuries to Iyer and Rahul have also not helped India's cause.

At present, India is gearing up for the 50-over Asia Cup, co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which commences on August 30. It will serve as a dress rehearsal for the home ODI WC. Before the continental tournament, Jasprit Bumrah will lead a second-stringed Indian team in three T20I versus hosts Ireland, starting on August 18.

Wanted Virat Kohli to bat at No. 4 during CWC '19, reveals former India coach Ravi Shastri

Hardik Pandya-led India lost the five-match T20I series to West Indies, in Florida, on August 13 (Sunday). This was India's first-ever five-match T20I series defeat and their maiden bilateral series loss to the Windies, comprising a minimum of three games, since 2006. Throughout the series, captain Hardik failed to impress with his decision-making whereas also struggled with the bat.

Hardik ended with 77 runs in five games, at a strike rate of 110. With him being rested for the upcoming three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, the all-rounder will now gear up for the Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which kicks off on August 30. It will serve as an ideal dress rehearsal for the Asian sides before the ODI World Cup in India, in October-November.

Before the Asia Cup, former Indian stumper Parthiv analysed Hardik's captaincy in the WI T20Is and called it a 'work in progress'. In addition, he was concerned with his form and feels the 29-year-old needs runs under his belt before the CWC '23 edition.

Highlighting how Hardik did not use Axar Patel properly in the WI T20Is, Patel told Cricbuzz, "Against Nicholas Pooran, he (Hardik Pandya) gave that over to Axar Patel and not bowling Yuzvendra Chahal. Bowling changes and the utilisation of the bowlers are something that tells me that Hardik, the captain for India, is still a work in progress. "

He added, "And there is obviously a little concern about his batting. He needs runs. He didn't get runs in the IPL, he didn't get runs in the last couple of series as well. India would want to get some runs for Hardik Pandya in the Asia Cup or the series against Australia before the World Cup."

Hardik only played one good knock in the WI tour, during the ODI series decider where he ended with an entertaining 70 not out. With the ball, he accounted for five scalps in eight white-ball games in West Indies and USA.

Hardik also had a moderate run&nbsp;in IPL 2023, ending with 346 runs at 136.75 (along with&nbsp;three wickets). He did play out the situation with caution in a few games versus New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Australia early this year, during the home ODIs. However, the ODI vice-captain will be aware that he needs to be at his all-round best, especially with the bat, heading&nbsp;into the 50-over World Cup.

India would want Hardik Pandya to get some runs in Asia Cup ahead of CWC '23, feels former Indian stumper

Virat Kohli batted only twice during India's just-concluded all-format tour of West Indies. He played the two Tests and ODI series opener before being rested for the final two games and returned home&nbsp;not being part of the T20I setup (since the 2022 T20 World Cup). During his limited time in the middle, Kohli took his international century tally to 76 with a fine 121 in the second and final Test.&nbsp;

When Kohli got to his 76th ton, talks resumed whether he would surpass Sachin Tendulkar's 100 centuries record, most by any batter at the international level. Being rested for majority of the ODIs, the former Indian captain's WI tour ended pretty soon and, thus, he could not add more to his tally.

He will now gear up for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023, in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, starting on August 30, which will soon be followed by the home ODI World Cup, in October-November.

While many believe he will be keen to come close to Tendulkar's tally and aim to break it soon, in the coming years, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa rubbished all such claims.

Uthappa, part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup win under MS Dhoni, feels Kohli isn't bothered about personal records and will be focusing on winning games for India in the upcoming Asia Cup and CWC '23.

Speaking to Times of India, the former player said. "Virat (Kohli) doesn't really care about breaking records anymore. We as people and fans are obsessed with it. He would much rather win matches for India irrespective of those hundreds. Virat's focus will be on winning matches for India in the Asia Cup and World Cup. He doesn't really care about the records."

Uthappa added, "Whether he (Virat) achieves that milestone (breaking Sachin's ODI centuries record) during the Asia Cup, World Cup or at any (other) point in his career, it doesn't matter because his sole focus is on winning matches for India, not his hundreds."

At present, the 34-year-old Kohli has a chance to break Tendulkar's record. He still has plenty of cricket left in him even if he only plays Tests and ODIs. However, he will be focused on the larger picture, i.e. of ending India's ten-year-long ICC title drought with a win in the home 50-over World Cup at home later this year.

Uthappa feels Virat Kohli not bothered about personal feats, focused on doing well in Asia Cup, CWC '23

KL Rahul is nearing full fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru. Ahead of the Asia Cup squad announcement, the Indian team management is keenly awaiting the final fitness report of Rahul as well as Shreyas Iyer as their middle-order woes continue. While reports have been positive with regard to Rahul's fitness, it remains to be seen if he makes the squad for the upcoming continental tournament, starting on August 30.

While there is no doubt that India desperately need both Rahul and Iyer back in the squad, ex-Indian head coach Ravi Shastri doesn't want the former to speed up&nbsp;his return for the Asia Cup, to be jointly hosted by&nbsp;Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Shastri feels it might not be fair on Rahul to return in the multi-nation tournament and also don the gloves.

Speaking on Star Sports' Selection Day show, Shastri opined, "See when when you're talking of a player (KL Rahul) who's not played and is recovering from injury. To think of him in the XI of the Asia Cup, you're asking a little too much of the player himself. And then you're talking keeping. When a guy comes from an injury, the range of movement and things of that sort, so that's a no no."

Thus, Shastri feels India can opt for Ishan Kishan's services, an attacking left-hander who can play at the top or in the middle and keep wickets instead of rushing for Rahul's return. Rohit Sharma-led India are yet to announce the squad for the mega event, where they open their campaign on September 2 versus Pakistan. The seven-time winners are placed in Group A with Pakistan and Nepal.

Should nearly-fit KL Rahul be a part of India's XI in Asia Cup 2023? Ravi Shastri shares his take

On Tuesday (August 15), former Indian captain Virat Kohli took to his official Instagram account to slam reports which claimed that he will build&nbsp;a cricket pitch at his new farmhouse in Alibaug. It is to be noted that Kohli-Anushka Sharma's new farmhouse is under construction at the moment. Recently, they were also seen paying a visit to the farmhouse to check on the details of the construction.

While there were rumours that the star batter is investing in building a cricket pitch at the farmhouse, he has now dismissed all such claims. "Bachpan se jo akhbaar Padha hai, wo bhi fake news chaapne lage ab (The newspaper&nbsp;which I have read since childhood, has&nbsp;also started publishing fake news)," said Kohli on his Instagram story on Tuesday.

At present, Kohli is gearing up to represent India in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. India will open their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Pallekele. They are placed in Group A along with Pakistan and Nepal and are expected to meet the Men in Green once again in the Super Four. The two heavyweights might also come face to face in the summit clash, which will be a first in the history of the tournament, to be held on September 17 in Colombo.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa opined on whether Kohli can break Sachin Tendulkar's record of 100 centuries. Kohli took his century tally to 76 after the West Indies tour, where he only played an ODI and two Tests. In this regard, Uthappa told TOI, "Virat (Kohli) doesn't really care about breaking records any more.

Kohli will certainly want his bat to do all the talking in the remainder of 2023, with two big events - the Asia Cup and home ODI World Cup&nbsp;in October-November&nbsp;-&nbsp;on the cards.

Former India captain Virat Kohli rubbishes reports of building cricket pitch in Alibaug farmhouse

Former Indian captain Kapil Dev recently revealed that he is a big fan of Bazball, an attacking style of play which England have adopted in&nbsp;Tests since early 2022. The term Bazball came since Brendon McCullum took over as the head coach of Ben Stokes-led England's Test line-up, where players play more attacking at all times.&nbsp;Impressed with England's new brand of cricket, Kapil has urged Rohit Sharma-led India to also play more aggressively to get desired results in the purest format.

It is to be noted that India kicked off their campaign in the 2023-25 WTC cycle with a two-match Test series versus hosts West Indies, winning 1-0. They were in a dominant position in the second and final Test, in Trinidad, at stumps on Day Four. The visitors needed eight more wickets as West Indies were 76&nbsp;for 2 in chase of 365 but rain washed out the entire final day. Thus, Rohit &amp; Co. missed out on a likely series whitewash and adding more points in their kitty in the WTC cycle.

Kapil believes India should take a leaf out of England's Bazball as he hailed the recently-held Ashes 2023, which ended in a 2-2 stalemate in the United Kingdom.

<h2>'Ashes 2023 was one of the finest series'</h2>

"Bazball is wonderful. The series between England and Australia was one of the finest series I have seen in recent times. I think cricket should be played like that. Rohit is good. But he must be more aggressive," Kapil&nbsp;told The Times of India.

"You have to think about how teams like England play now. And it's not just us. All cricket-playing countries have to think on those lines. Winning the game should be the highest priority (not play for draws) for all teams," he added.

Talking about the Ashes, England conceded a 2-0 lead to Pat Cummins-led Australia after losing the opening two games by a whisker. Nonetheless, they did not deter from their aggressive approach as Bazball continued to inspire in the remainder of the series. As a result, the home side won the third Test by three wickets and were very close to a win in the following game before rain had the final say.

In the series decider, Stokes &amp; Co. won by 49 runs to prevent a series loss at home. However, Australia walked away by retaining the urn. The series was a memorable affair which displayed England's free-flowing approach -- termed as Bazball since McCullum took over --&nbsp;to the fore.

Rohit Sharma needs to be more aggressive: Kapil Dev advises Indian captain, cites Bazball example

Hardik Pandya-led India lost the five-match T20I series to West Indies, in Florida, on Sunday (August 13) after an eight-wicket loss in the series finale. Opting to bat first, India rode on Suryakumar Yadav's 45-ball 61 to post 165 for 9. In reply, Rovman Powell &amp; Co. rode on opener Brandan King's 85 not out, Nicholas Pooran's 35-ball 47 and Shai Hope's 13-ball 22* to chase down the score in 18 overs. With this defeat, India conceded their first-ever T20I series. The Windies, on the other hand, gained their maiden bilateral series win over India, with a minimum of three games, since their 4-1 ODI series win at home in 2006.

A lot of fingers were raised on the Indian team management following HardiK &amp; Co.'s series loss. The Men in Blue conceded a 2-0 lead to the hosts before bouncing back and levelling the series at 2-2. However, they were outplayed in the final game as the series defeat exposed India's lack of batting depth and raised questions on Hardik's captaincy. Amid criticism from all corners, veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has come out in support of the T20I line-up.

<h2>'Easy to criticise the team on social media'</h2>

Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "There are plenty of positives from this T20I series. It is very easy to criticise the team on social media since they lost to a team that didn't qualify for the last T20 World Cup. They haven't qualified for the upcoming 50-over World Cup as well. I want to give a piece of information to you guys."

<h2>'They will definitely get better'</h2>

Ashwin further pointed out, "I am not talking, backing, or supporting anybody. All of these are secondary. As a youngster, if you are going to the West Indies, there will be some challenges. In all countries, there will be some innate secrets. The local players know these things more than visiting players. Especially if the players are young. When I went to West Indies, England, Australia, I had to learn various little things...these are first-time experience for me as a cricketer. So, youngsters would have learned a lot from this tour. They will definitely get better form here."

"Losing the the series 3-2 to West Indies...many of them are criticising and upset. It's okay and understandable. It's only fair, I guess. But we can see this loss from two perspectives. The players will get experience from this series," the 36-year-old concluded.

A second-stringed Indian team, under Jasprit Bumrah, have now left for Ireland where they will play three T20Is before the focus shifts entirely on the ODI format with the Asia Cup 2023, starting on August 30, and home ODI World Cup (in October-November) in the pipeline.

It is very easy to criticise on social media: R Ashwin defends Hardik Pandya-led India after WI T20Is loss

Prithvi Shaw has been on fire ever since he made his debut for&nbsp;Northamptonshire in the ongoing One-Day Cup in the United Kingdom.&nbsp;The right-hander made heads turn with a magnificent 244 against Somerset last week before making&nbsp;a blistering unbeaten century against Durham on Sunday (August 13). The Indian opener is the competition's top run-scorer, having amassed 429 runs so far at an average of 143.

Shaw, who last played for India in July 2021, will be aiming for a memorable run for Northamptonshire to make a strong statement and enter the Indian team at the earliest. His current form has impressed his new team's coach, John Sadler. Sadler called Shaw a 'superstar' and feels he is 'as good as' someone he has seen in '25 years'. Sadler spoke at length about Shaw after Northamptonshire's six-wicket win over Durham.&nbsp;"Humble is the perfect word to describe Prithvi Shaw. He's gracious and respectful, he's loved being a part of the team. We're loving having him here as well," he said.

In a recent interview, Shaw revealed that he doesn't have many friends and doesn't like new companions as well. However, he has certainly found an admirer in Sadler and it seems the Indian batter has perfectly fitted into the Northamptonshire setup.&nbsp;

Sadler further made a big statement and added, "His skill speaks for itself, he's a superstar. He's as good as I've seen in 25 years of playing this game. He's up there with the best in terms of ball striking. He genuinely wants to win games of cricket and has been a star in the dressing room."

Shaw has been doing exceptionally well in the domestic circuit and now has turned on the heat for Northamptonshire as well. At present, he isn't in India's scheme of things in the ODI as well as the T20I setup. However, a great run in the One-Day Cup can turn things around for him. 'He's a superstar, as good as I've seen in 25 years': Northamptonshire coach in awe of Prithvi Shaw

India lost the&nbsp;last match of the five-match T20I series&nbsp;against West Indies, in Florida, on Sunday (August 13) and conceded the series 2-3. This was India's first-ever bilateral series loss to the Windies, one comprising&nbsp;a minimum of three games, since their 1-4 loss in 2006 during the five ODIs in the Caribbean island. After the series loss, head coach Rahul Dravid admitted to India's lack of batting depth as they batted only till No. 7.

After the final T20I, Dravid said, "I think in terms of our squad here, probably it didn't allow us the flexibility in some ways to be able to change the combinations a little bit. But I think going forward, we've got to look at certain areas in which we can get better. Finding depth in our batting has been an area we are trying to address. We are trying to do the best we possibly can but that's certainly an area we can look at, how we cannot weaken our bowling attack but ensure we have a certain amount of depth in batting."

While Dravid's concerns were regarding the current T20I team, veteran Indian spinner R Ashwin reacted to it and came up with an interesting suggestion for Rohit Sharma-led Team India ahead of the upcoming home ODI World Cup, in October-November.

Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "You don't want your tail to start so early, and that's why you need someone like Shardul Thakur to come and smash a few balls at No. 8. But you should play your best batters and bowlers to win a match. At the same time, if you needed 36 to win from 30 balls when you are six down, you should have the ability to close down such games as well. So, that is the conundrum that India will go into ahead of the World Cup. If they play Kuldeep and Chahal together, then it gets to a situation where Kuldeep has to bat at No. 8."

At present, India's ODI setup is eagerly waiting to know the fitness status of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, two of their prominent middle-order batters, ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI WC at home. Currently, India have injury concerns with regard to the middle and lower order whereas they will also aim for more batting depth in the upcoming ICC event.

After the Windies tour, India is now gearing for three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, before the focus shifts to the 50-over Asia Cup, starting on August 30 in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. It will serve as a dress rehearsal for the ODI WC.

From colossal failure in SA to WI T20I series loss: Team India's shocking LOWS in Rahul Dravid's tenure

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif feels Team India have not done well in recent ICC events due to 'internal issues'. It is to be noted that India have not won an ICC event since their historic triumph in the 2013 Champions Trophy. Their last win in a multi-nation event came during the 2018 Asia Cup, in the UAE. At present, Rohit Sharma-led India are gearing up for the Asia Cup, in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which will be followed by the home ODI World Cup, in October-November.

Latif&nbsp;stated that&nbsp;Team India have faltered due to&nbsp;"internal issues",&nbsp;seemingly referring to former captain Virat Kohli's sacking,&nbsp;India's top-order crisis and the perennial No. 4 issue.

<h2>'India couldn't perform due to internal issues'</h2>

On his YouTube channel, the former Pakistan keeper-batter and captain pointed out, "Virat Kohli had a direction and he wanted to win, but he was sacked. The team couldn't perform due to internal issues. They couldn't perform in ICC tournaments because, maybe, the captain didn't get the desired players. Or maybe he got, but they weren't used. Now, there are two big events -- Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and the World Cup at home. Their team is still pretty good, they will get a no.4."

Highlighting the Men in Blue's problems, Latif mentioned, "The problem begins when the top-3 gets dismissed quickly. If the top-3 play&nbsp;out the 25-30 overs, they will win easily. Their issue is the top-3 isn't performing how it used to. They could've brought back Shikhar Dhawan, you had made him captain less than a year ago during a tour. You had players, you threw them here and there.”

At present, Hardik Pandya-led India is involved in the five T20Is versus West Indies, with the&nbsp;series&nbsp;decider on Sunday (August 13) in Florida. Meanwhile, the national side is simultaneously&nbsp;focused on preparing for the Asia Cup 2023, starting on August 30, which is a dress rehearsal for the ODI World Cup at home.

India have reached four finals and as many semi-finals in all ICC events since 2013, when they last clinched a mega title. Thus, they will be hungry to end the year with a historic ODI WC triumph on home soil and silence all their critics.

India couldn't perform in ICC tournaments due to internal issues, claims former Pakistan captain

Hardik Pandya-led India thrashed West Indies by nine wickets to win the fourth and penultimate T20I, in Florida, and level the five-match series on Saturday (August 12). Opting to bat first, Rovman Powell-led Windies piled up 178 for 8&nbsp;courtesy of Shai Hope's 45 and Shimron Hetmyer's 61. The total proved to be inadequate as Yashasvi Jaiswal (84 not out) and Shubman Gill (77) stitched a mammoth 165-run first-wicket stand to chase down the score in 17 overs.

With the ball, Arshdeep Singh (3 for 38) and Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 26) did the job for India to keep the Windies below the 200-run mark before Jaiswal-Gill stood tall. The opening duo ran hard between wickets and found the boundaries at regular intervals, smarting targetting the bowlers, to take India to a&nbsp;dominating win. After the clash, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa made a big claim.

<h2>'They can be something as great as Sachin Tendulkar-Sourav Ganguly opening the batting'</h2>

Uthappa said on Jio Cinema after the match, "Everyone who plays for India are equally capable and have equal ability but the way Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill bat in tandem; they can bat for each other as well and they need to find that space. If they do, they are going to be a very dangerous pair for India in years to come. It will be a hot pair and they can be something as great as a Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly opening the batting."

He added, "They need to figure a few things out and if they do, they will do great things for India."

Jaiswal has been in superb form in the West Indies tour whereas Gill shrugged past his poor run of form, of late, and smacked an impressive 47-ball 77 laced with 3 fours and 5 sixes.

Ind vs WI: 'Gill-Jaiswal can become India's next Tendulkar-Ganguly' - Uthappa's BIG claim after 4th T20I

After years of trying, India seem to have found one good all-format bowler – Mukesh Kumar. The right-arm seamer emerged onto the international scene following impressive outings in domestic and Delhi Capitals in IPL this season. His run from being a rookie in the side to making his debut across all formats during the ongoing West Indies series became the talk of the town. Team India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey echoes the exact words.

Considering the injury woes of most of the first-team bowlers, Team India was seeking a bowler who could sustain and deliver across all formats, and then they came across Mukesh.&nbsp;

Ahead of the 4th T20I in Florida on Saturday, Paras hailed Mukesh, saying he&nbsp;has what it takes to become a top bowler, while the team management is also happy with his progress.&nbsp;

Paras added that Mukesh’s approach is fabulous, and he is exactly the bowler the team needed in these conditions.

“Very happy with the way he has progressed; the thought process, the discussion we had with him and his approach towards the game is fabulous."

“You need someone like him to come here on a tour and play against tough opponents on a different wicket which is never easy. But the way he has gone about it and the character he has shown (makes us) extremely happy."

“Going forward, since we know he is capable of playing all three formats, we need to be smart with his workload management. He has played a lot of domestic cricket, and got quality skills out there,” Mhambrey said on Friday.

<h2>India expect better batting track in USA</h2>

As the Team landed in the USA for the remaining two T20Is, Paras feels wickets in this part of the world would assist batters more than the ones on offer in the Caribbean. While both teams struggled to get going in the previous three matches, Paras feels it would be a different ball game in the USA.

“It is a little bit different with the black soil. The kind of soil we get in the north of India. It is going to be a good wicket to bat on. The ball will come onto the bat. That is what we saw in the nets. Looks like it is going to be a high-scoring game,” he said.

Veteran India batter Shikhar Dhawan admits being shocked for missing out on Asian Games 2023 call-up. A prolific run-getter at the top of the order, Dhawan said he was hoping for a return to the side, but despite missing out, he is happy for Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was named captain for the tournament that starts on September 23.

Dhawan, who last played for India in December 2022, until this time, was the preferred stand-in captain every time first-team players got rested for any series. Having missed out on making the cut this time, Dhawan expressed his disappointment over the same but remains optimistic about an India call-up soon.

Speaking with PTI, Dhawan said he expected to get picked in the squad for the Asian Games. As he accepted&nbsp;the selectors' call to overlook him for reasons unknown to him and the fans, Dhawan admitted to being happy for Ruturaj Gaikwad and the young squad.

<h2>Staying fit is still a priority for Dhawan</h2>

India’s finest batter in ICC tournaments since 2013, Dhawan said he continues to work on his fitness should an India return comes calling.

"I will be ready, of course. That is why I keep myself fit. There is always a chance whether it is 1% or 20%.

"I still enjoy training, and I still enjoy the game; these are the things in my control. Whatever decision is made, I respect that."

Adding he is yet to speak with any national selector, Dhawan said he keeps going to NCA for his training – something he enjoys.

"I have not spoken to any selector [about my future]. I keep going to National Cricket Academy [in Bengaluru]. I enjoy my time there, the facilities are great. NCA has shaped my career, and I am grateful for it."

Known to be optimistic and grateful at heart, Dhawan echoed his true feelings, saying he is in a happy space. Dhawan, who also captains Punjab Kings in the IPL, wishes to lift the trophy with the franchise next year.

"I am in a very happy state of mind. I am very blessed to have such an amazing career and contribute to the Indian team.

"At this stage, you go year by year. Physically I am very fit and I have an IPL to win for Punjab Kings. Hopefully, we can do that next year," Dhawan said.

Indian seamer Prasidh Krishna has regained complete fitness and is ready to play his part in the three-match Ireland T20Is, starting on August 18 in Dublin. The right-arm pacer, who, alongside Jasprit Bumrah, missed all cricket action post-September last year, admits getting restless during his initial injury phase, but remains hopeful of breaking into the final 15 for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, starting October 5.

During Zimbabwe ODIs in August last year, Krishna suffered a spinal injury and remained out of competitive cricket since then.

Speaking in detail on how he dealt with the injury and&nbsp;the rehabilitation phase, Krishna said, much like every pacer, he signed up for injuries and hard and long-working days, agreeing that all of this is part and parcel of the game.

Though he admitted getting restless over his unavailability for longer duration, the right-hand seamer added he remains optimistic.&nbsp;

"I'm not someone who gets excited or nervous about anything. I take it in a balanced way. As fast bowlers, you sign up for injuries, you sign up for hard-working days, you sign up for long days... all that is a part of our game. I mean, it's not easy when everybody is playing a lot of cricket. There's so much happening, and you're sitting at home not really being available for selection, but I was optimistic," Krishna told ESPNcricinfo.

<h2>So close, yet so far</h2>

Krishna revealed his road to recovery wasn’t smooth and pleasing and that there were moments when he realised he was far away from returning to the field.&nbsp;

"I was a little restless, of course, in the initial phase before the surgery, as to why it was taking so long, especially since I'd started bowling. There were days when I felt great and like 'Oh, I'm ready to play', but then after two more sessions, I'd realise I need a lot more of these and at the same intensity for the body to condition itself,” he added.

Krishna said his perception changed after he went under the knife. He added taking one day at a time, and that’s what made him enjoy his training.

“If I have to look to play at the highest level, the intensity is going to be high. Once the surgery was done, I was prepared that it was going to take time. I changed the way I looked at things. I took it one day at a time. I was enjoying my training; I had a good time with my family. Great things happened. I was very optimistic and positive," Krishna added.

With BCCI’s selection committee set to announce squads for the Asia Cup and World Cup 2023, a fit-again Krishna hopes to make the cut.

Optimistic Prasidh Krishna admits being restless during injury phase, remains hopeful of India call for CWC'23

Tilak Varma has made heads turn in the Indian cricket&nbsp;fraternity with a confident start to his international career during the ongoing five T20Is between India and West Indies. After three games, he has had scores of 39, 51, and 49* and has played his part with a lot of maturity, understanding the match situation. Thus, former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha suggested his inclusion in the ODI setup. Now, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad has shared his take on Varma's addition to the ODI squad for the forthcoming home World Cup.

In an interaction with the news agency PTI, Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not. So, in case, if Shreyas Iyer is ruled out, in the present scenario, one guy who fits the bill is Tilak Varma, because of his versatility, because of his ability to play fast bowling and spin bowling and also because of his ability to switch the gears as and when required. More than anything else, we don't have a left-hander at the top of the order. So all these things will definitely go in favour of Tilak Varma."

<h2>'He is someone like Michael Bevan'</h2>

Prasad further made a big statement and said, "That’s the kind of role he can adapt to very quickly. He understands the situation well, he rotates strikes, he is hard to stop from scoring, and he can hold the innings together. He is someone like Michael Bevan."

"If you see his domestic cricket also, it’s close to 55 or 60, his average in the one-day format. He has got a pretty bright chance to get into the squad if Shreyas Iyer is found unfit," the former Indian cricketer added.

Prasad also acknowledged the role of Varma's IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians for the left-hander's incredible rise in the last two years. In this regard, he said: "I would say he has developed phenomenally in the last two years. He is a phenomenal cricketer, there’s no two ways about it. He played U19 for India. But credit should definitely go to Mumbai Indians for the way they have groomed him."

"The amount of opportunities he has got over the last two years, the way MI has shown faith in him, it’s tremendous. A winning team like Mumbai Indians showing faith will obviously boost the confidence of a young cricketer like him," he concluded.

Apart from Prasad, the likes of Wasim Jaffer and R Ashwin have also backed Varma to be added to India's squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup. India will kick off their campaign in the showpiece event on October 08, versus Australia in Chennai, with the tournament opener to be held on October 05, in Ahmedabad, between defending champions England and New Zealand.

Tilak Varma has made heads turn in the Indian cricket fraternity with a confident start to his international career during the ongoing five T20Is between India and West Indies.

Tilak Varma has made heads turn in the Indian cricket fraternity with a confident start to his international career during the ongoing five T20Is between India and West Indies. Should India rope in Tilak Varma for ODI World Cup? Former chief selector MSK Prasad shares his take

After guiding India to an impressive seven-wicket win over West Indies in the third T20I, in Guyana on Tuesday (August 08), Suryakumar Yadav admitted to his ODI numbers being 'quite poor' as he continues to pile runs consistently in T20Is.&nbsp;"If I'm honest, I know my numbers in one-day cricket are quite poor. There is no shame in admitting that. We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it," Surya told reporters after slamming a match-winning 41-ball 83 versus the Windies.&nbsp;

Now, former Indian opener-turned-commentator, Aakash Chopra, has opened up on Surya's ODI numbers and cited Rohit Sharma's late bloom in Tests, something which might inspire&nbsp;the former. On his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "Surya has candidly, honestly and openly accepted that his ODI record is really bad, it is nothing to be ashamed of, there is nothing to hide as well, and he already knows what everyone is saying."

"He also said that Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid have told him that he has to understand the format a little more. He is not the only one and he is not the first player as well who is taking a little time to shift from one format to the other," he further asserted.

<h2>'Rohit Sharma has fallen in love with Test cricket'</h2>

Chopra then shifted focus to the current Indian captain Rohit and his initial struggles in Tests before his resurgence&nbsp;in late 2019. "If you look at Rohit Sharma when he was playing in the middle-order in the initial phase of his career, you left he was not comfortable with the format. He used to bat well and then play a bad shot. People used to wonder why because everything was going well and then came the bad shot. This was at the start of his Test career. After he began opening, he understood the pulse of the format. Now it feels like Rohit has fallen in love with Test cricket. He needed some time to understand the pulse of the other format," Chopra added.

Prior to becoming the Indian opener in late 2019, Rohit struggled in the red-ball format due to inconsistency and injuries. However, he has turned it around&nbsp;since batting up the order. He has scored seven tons as an opener, with a best of 212, out of his ten centuries overall.&nbsp;

Thus, the former Indian cricketer-turned-expert has suggested Surya take a leaf from Rohit's book and give himself some time in the ODI format in order to understand the pulse of the game and then explode. It is to be noted that the right-hander has only managed&nbsp;511 runs -- with two fifties -- at an average of&nbsp;24.33 in 26 ODIs. It will be interesting to see if he makes the cut in India's Asia Cup squad, and later in the ODI World Cup line-up. He has been exceptional as a T20I batter, averaging over 45, but his ODI numbers need significant improvement.

Aakash Chopra cites Rohit Sharma's initial Test struggles to decode Suryakumar Yadav's ODI woes

After keeping India's hopes alive in the five-match T20Is with a blistering 83 in the third game, in Guyana on Tuesday (August 08), Suryakumar Yadav admitted to his ODI struggles. While the swashbuckling right-hander has been in top form in the shortest format of the game since his international debut, the same cannot be said about his ODI numbers. In 26 ODIs, Surya averages a poor 24.33, having managed only 511 runs with two fifties.

<h2>'ODIs&nbsp;one of the most challenging formats for me'</h2>

Following Hardik Pandya-led India's easy win in the third T20I versus West Indies, Player of the Match Surya said, "We've played so much T20 cricket now, that we have become habituated to it. We don't play as much one-day cricket anymore. That's one of the most challenging formats for me, because you need to have different gears. If too many wickets fall early on, you need to start off with a Test cricket-like approach. Then you go at run-a-ball and then take the T20 approach."

<section itemprop="articleBody">
"Right now, I'm trying to apply what the team management has told me about ODI cricket. I'm trying to take my time and do what the team requires of me. I'll try to keep the faith that the team has shown in me. In T20 cricket, we know what to do because we play so much of it. You just need to go and express your game," the Mumbai Indians (MI) batter stated.

We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it." Revealing the pep talk with regular captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid, SKY said, "Rohit and Rahul bhai have told me - this is not a format that you play a lot, you need to practice a bit on what can be done for the team. We want you to play 45 to 50 balls. That's the sign from the team management, now that's on me how I want to play my game if I'm batting in the last 15-18 overs. Now, that's in my hand how to make use of this opportunity. I need to bat as per the team requirement."

In KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer's absence, Surya has been given a long rope in India's middle-order in the ODI line-up. However, he has failed to get going and is yet to cement his spot. With India's squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, which commences later this month, to be announced soon, it will be interesting to see if SKY makes the cut. The 50-over Asia Cup will be followed by the ODI World Cup, later this year in India, thus, SKY needs to be consistent in the shorter format to remain regular.

Talking about the India-West Indies ongoing T20Is, Kuldeep Yadav (3 for 28), SKY (44-ball 83, laced with 10 fours and 4 sixes) and Tilak Verma (49 not out) starred in India's win as they now trail the hosts 1-2. The final two games will be held in Florida, USA over&nbsp;the weekend.

My ODI numbers are quite poor: Suryakumar admits to 50-over struggles after blistering 83 in 3rd T20I vs WI

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh isn't much optimistic of Team India's chances in the forthcoming home ODI World Cup, which kicks off on October 5 between England and New Zealand. The 2011 ODI World Cup winner raised his concerns over India's unprepared middle order and feels if the likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are not fit in time, India might struggle in the marquee tournament, especially in high-pressure games.

<h2>'I see a lot of concerns'</h2>

Yuvraj said on the&nbsp;Cricket Basu YouTube&nbsp;channel, "I can be a patriot and say 'India will win because I am an Indian.' But I see a lot of concerns in the Indian middle order because of injuries. If those concerns are not resolved, we will struggle, especially in pressure games. Don't experiment in pressure games. The skill work to bat in the middle order is very different from that of an opener. Is there anybody there (in the team management) who is working around the guys that will be playing in the middle order? That's the question mark – the middle order is not ready, so someone will have to make them ready."

Yuvraj emphasised on the role of middle-order batters and added, "If your openers are out early, you need to build a partnership. (Middle order) batsmen are not simply flamboyant stroke-makers that occupy the crease and start hitting. He has to absorb pressure, leave a few balls, and create a partnership. It's a difficult job, somebody has to be experienced over there."

The 41-year-old former cricketer was one of the top performers for India in the CWC '11 edition, held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Under MS Dhoni, India won the final beating Sri Lanka by six wickets and Yuvraj ended as the Player-of-the-Tournament with 362 runs and 15 scalps overall.&nbsp;

Talking about Rohit-led India, the Men in Blue are running against time to finalise their squad for the mega event, with Rahul and Iyer on the cusp of full recovery. India will open their campaign in the home ODI WC versus five-time winners Australia, in Chennai, on October 08.

'I can be a patriot and say 'India will win' but...: Yuvraj Singh on Rohit Sharma & Co.'s chances in CWC '23

Hardik Pandya-led India have their&nbsp;task cut out to keep the five-match T20I series alive after losing the first two games to hosts West Indies. Ahead of the third T20I, to be held in Guyana on Tuesday (August 08), former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter, Kamran Akmal, schooled Indian star Sanju Samson. After an impressive 41-ball 51 in the third and final ODI, Samson has not got going in the T20Is. He has managed 12 (12) and 7 (7) so far and, thus, the Pakistani veteran spoke at length on Samson's disappointing runs in the opening two games.&nbsp;

Samson was expected to finish off the proceedings for India in the series opener, coming out at No. 6 in a chase of 150, but he fell for a run-a-ball 12. In the following game, he couldn't provide any late impetus to the Indian innings and fell for 7 as the visitors only managed 152/7, losing by two wickets. Akmal opined on Samson's lack of maturity in dealing with consequential moments and said on his Youtube channel,&nbsp;"It was disappointing to see Sanju Samson get out this way."

Akmal added, "He got a chance to bat a little higher, and there were a lot of overs left. It would have been the biggest statement. He is a class batter, but you need to stand up in such situations. He should be more mature in his approach. He has been around for a while now but is yet to cement his place in the team."

Samson made his international debut in 2015, however, he is yet to cement his spot in India's white-ball squads. While his numbers in ODIs are impressive, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper needs to step up in the shortest format of the game. He is being seen as a backup for KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, as the duo is running against time to get fully fit&nbsp;for the ODI World Cup.&nbsp;However, he also needs to perform in T20Is, with the next T20 World Cup to be held early next year&nbsp;in West Indies and the USA.

Samson will be raring to go&nbsp;in the third T20I between India and West Indies, in Guyana, on Tuesday evening (August 08) with the series on the line for the Men in Blue.
