Jasprit Bumrah needs no introduction.
The ace seamer is perhaps the best India has ever produced, with his exploits across formats a testament to his success at all levels. Former India coach Ravi Shastri lately revealed that under his tenure in 2019, when India had toured the West Indies, Bumrah received ‘the ultimate compliment’.
Two former West Indies pacers, Sir Curtly Ambrose and Sir Andy Roberts, met Bumrah on the sidelines of a Test match (in Antigua), saying the India fast bowler could open the bowling during their era for what he brings to the table.
To provide reference to this, West Indies dominated cricket for nearly four decades (1960-00), with their bowling department that once had the quartet of Marshall, Garner, Croft and Holding, making headlines all across. Although West Indies had countless other seamers to traumatise any batting unit, a handful were considered deadly, including Roberts and Ambrose.

Speaking to Star Sports, Shastri revealed following Bumrah’s performance in the two Tests, where he picked 13 wickets, including a hat-trick, Ambrose and Roberts walked up to him to compliment him.

"The ultimate compliment for Jasprit Bumrah came in 2019. When I was coach here, and we were playing a Test series, and he dismantled the West Indies in 2-and-a-half or three days in the two Test matches. And Andy Roberts walked up to him in Antigua. Andy and Curtly (Ambrose) together. Andy walked up to him and said 'You, young man could have taken the new ball in our era’," Shastri said.
"You will not get a bigger compliment than that. Roberts was the leader of the pack that had Marshall, Garner, Croft, and Holding. No better compliment than that for Jasprit Bumrah. That was in 2019, he has come along leaps and bounds since then," Shastri continued.
Bumrah guides India to 2nd T20 WC title
With Jasprit Bumrah at the helm of things, the Indian Team won their second T20 World Cup in the Americas, beating South Africa by seven runs in the final in Barbados. The ace seamer was India’s second-highest wicket-taker (15 wickets) in the tournament, but regarding impacting a game’s result on his own, he was heads and shoulders ahead of everyone.
In the grand finale, he picked two wickets (both clean bowled), with Marco Jansen’s wicket being the game-changer.
On Thursday (July 4), Bumrah, alongside the Indian Team, returned home to a grand welcome, which included a meeting with PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi, followed by an open-bus victory parade (near Marine Drive) and felicitation at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
