IPL 2024: SRH coach Muttiah Muralitharan blames ‘Indian spinners’ for routine 200+ totals

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowling coach Muttiah Muralitharan has blamed the Indian bowlers for the routine 200+ scores in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Ahead of the big-ticket match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the former Sri Lankan cricketer gave the controversial take which is sure to make headlines.
The 17th season of IPL has seen a record number of 200+ runs being scored on an almost consistent basis. Three of the highest IPL totals have come this season with Punjab Kings (PBKS) chasing a record 262 run target, earlier this week.
"The problem with spinners in India who are playing at the moment is most of the spinners are not spinning the ball. That is the main criteria because they are bowling a little quicker, so no deviation,"Muttiah Muralitharan said in the pre-match press conference.
"If you see in practice, batsmen are used to throw-downs and power-hitting, So they are now used to it if the ball is coming straight at 85-90 mph, and it comes straight their muscle memory is already practised to it. If it deviates, brain does not know how to react, so that's why spinners must learn how to spin the ball then they have a better chance," he added.
SRH has been at the forefront of the marauding campaign against the bowlers. The opening partnership of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma has systematically dismantled the opposition bowlers with the 2016 champions setting the highest IPL total twice in the season.

Muralitharan's statement comes a day after R Ashwin issued an SOS to BCCI to 'save the bowlers' amid the carnage unleashed against them by the batters.
“Save the bowlers, someone please,” Ashwinposted on X (formerly Twitter), followed by SOS emojis. He further posted, referring to the PBKS chase: “It’s run a ball for the last 2 overs of a T-20 game in a chase of 260-plus. Let that sink in.”
The introduction of the impact substitution has allowed the teams to bring the extra specialist batter in the XI, thereby allowing them the cushion to go big from the start.
