Hyderabad, India
Former South Africa great Dale Steyn has decided to part ways with SunRisers Hyderabad ahead of IPL 2025. The right-arm pacer took to social media late Wednesday night to announce this decision. He, however, will continue his association with SunRisers Eastern Cape franchise in the SA20.
The former SRH bowler joined the franchise’s backroom staff in 2022, though he pulled out of the next season for personal reasons. The SRH appointed former New Zealand all-rounder James Franklin as his replacement.
"A big thank you to SunRisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL, unfortunately, I won't be returning for IPL 2025," Steyn said on X (formerly Twitter). "However, I will continue to work with SunRisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa. Two-time winners here in SA20, let's try make it three in a row."

Several changes
SRH has made several changes to their coaching staff over the years. While Tom Moody was SRH’s head coach in 2021, under whom they signed Steyn, the 2016 IPL winners replaced Moody with Brian Lara in 2023. The former West Indies legend was in charge for just one season before SRH roped in Daniel Vettori as his replacement ahead of the last edition.
Under Vettori, SRH reached the IPL final for the first time since 2018, eventually losing to the winners – Kolkata Knight Riders.
Under Steyn’s guidance, Eastern Cape won SA20 titles in 2023 and 2024.
Meanwhile, in the IPL, the ace seamer played for a few teams, including SRH, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and now-defunct Gujarat Lions and Deccan Chargers.
SRH’s list of retentions
The last season’s runners-up have zeroed in on their retentions, with two overseas players – Heinrich Klassen (INR 23 crore) and Captain Pat Cummins (INR 18 crore) alongside India batter Abhishek Sharma (INR 14 crore) headlining the list.
Per the latest reports, the franchise is willing to add Travis Head and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy to this list.
Meanwhile, the mega IPL auction will take place later this year, though the final date and venue are yet to be disclosed.
