Operation Sindoor | Jaish chief Masood Azhar's brother Abdul Rauf, Air India hijack planner, likely killed in India's strike on Pak

A day after India launched Operation Sindoor, the armed forces have downed Pakistan&rsquo;s air defence units of HQ-9. Citing sources, news agency ANI reported that Pakistan's air defence missile launchers have been damaged heavily.
In a statement, the government information bureau said, "On the night of May 7 and 8, Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in northern and western India."
The locations included Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj.
"These were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks," the statement added. In the briefing addressing the media, Indian armed forces targeted air defence radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. "Indian response has been in the same domain with the same intensity as Pakistan. It has been reliably learnt that an air defence system at Lahore has been neutralised."
Pakistan has violated the ceasefire for the 14th day along the Line of Control (LoC). "Pakistan has increased the intensity of its unprovoked firing across the Line of Control using mortars and heavy calibre artillery in areas in Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar and Rajouri sectors in Jammu and Kashmir."
Further conforming, "Sixteen innocent lives have been lost, including three women and five children, due to Pakistani firing. Here too, India was compelled to respond to bring mortar and artillery fire from Pakistan to a halt."

Loud blasts heard in Pakistan's Lahore amid high tensions following India's Operation Sindoor: Report

After India launched Operation Sindoor and targeted nine terror sites, Pakistan claimed it downed five Indian jets. And now to back these claims, Defence Minister Khwaja Asif cited social media posts as evidence.
In an interview with news outlet CNN, Asif was comfortable in saying, "It's all over the social media." This is when the journalist asked if he had proof to validate Pakistan's claims of downing Indian jets.

On Wednesday (May 7) in his address after Operation Sindoor, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the airstrike was a compulsion, as Pakistan did not take any steps to curb the operation of terror outfits on their soil.
He said, "It was deemed essential that the perpetrators and planners of the 22 April attack be brought to justice. Despite a fortnight having passed since the attacks, there has been no demonstrable step from Pakistan to take action against the terror infrastructure on its territory or territory under its control."
"Instead, all it has indulged in are denials and allegations. Our intelligence monitoring of Pakistan-based terrorist modules indicated that further attacks against India were impending. Thus, there was a compulsion both to deter and to preempt," Misri added.
Also, this isn't the first time the Pakistan Defence Minister has baffled journalists interviewing him. In his previous interview with news outlet Sky News, he made a bizarre claim when he said, 'Lashkar-e-Taiba doesn't exist.'
But he did confirm that the country had been associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba in the 'past'. He added, "Lashkar-e-Taiba doesn't exist in Pakistan anymore; it is extinct."

"We hope for a peaceful resolution and de-escalation between India and Pakistan," said a spokesperson of IMF, the specialised agency of the United Nations (UN).
The IMF spokesperson also confirmed that the international agency's executive board will meet on May 9, as scheduled, to review Pakistan's current funding programme: "The executive board will meet on May 9 to review Pakistan&rsquo;s funding".
<h2>Why is the IMF reviewing Pakistan's funding?</h2>
Amidst ongoing fiscal problems, Pakistan has been under an IMF loan as part of its economic stabilisation plan. The review will determine if the country meets reform benchmarks and will impact the next funding disbursement.
The May 9 review of Pakistan's funding by the IMF comes as India, as per Reuters, asked the international agency to review loans disbursed to Islamabad.

Jittery Pakistan ready to 'wrap up' tensions after India's Operation Sindoor; PM Shehbaz Sharif to address nation soon

Pakistan&rsquo;s Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar was left fumbling on live television after Sky News anchor Yalda Hakim fact-checked him when he claimed Pakistan harbours no terrorist camps in the country, just hours after India launched Operation Sindoor- targeted strikes on terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK).<o:p></o:p>
In a calibrated military response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Indian armed forces carried out cross-border strikes on nine specific areas in the wee hours of Wednesday. The strikes destroyed infrastructure linked to terror groups Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Hizbul Mujahideen. India has stated that no military installation in Pakistan was targeted, and no civilian casualties were reported. <o:p></o:p>
Hakim also told the minister, &ldquo;The Indian armed forces have said that they only targeted terrorist camps and not Pakistani military facilities.&rdquo; In response, Tarar denied the claim and said, &ldquo;Let me make it very clear, there are no terrorist camps in Pakistan. Pakistan is a victim of terrorism. We are the frontline state against terrorism."<o:p></o:p>

But the news anchor promptly challenged the minister&rsquo;s claim and pointed at the explosive admission made on her show by Pakistan&rsquo;s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif just days earlier. <o:p></o:p>
"On my programme, just a week ago, your Defence Minister Khawaja Asif admitted that Pakistan has for decades had a policy of funding, backing, using terrorist groups as proxies in the country," Hakim said.
"In 2018, President Donald Trump cut military aid to Pakistan because he accused Pakistan of playing a double game."<o:p></o:p>
&ldquo;So when you say there&rsquo;re no terrorist camps in Pakistan, that is going against what Gen Parvez Musharraf said, what Benazir Bhutto said and what your defence minister said just a week ago,&rdquo; she added.

OPERATION SINDOOR: Pakistan reacts to India's attack, PM Shehbaz Sharif says Pak armed forces 'know how to deal with this'

Amid heightened tension between Pakistan and India, Pak Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, in yet another interview, said, 'if our existence is threatened, then nobody will exist.'
Khwaja hinted at the use of nuclear assets, but he isn't the first to raise the nuke bogey. On Saturday (May 3), Pakistan's envoy to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamali, said the country will retaliate with 'full spectrum of power, both conventional and nuclear'.

Pakistan&rsquo;s efforts to internationalise the situation also failed. They were advised to sort out the issues bilaterally with India.

Validating his claims, Asif told the interviewee, "My dear, if the parent organisation does not exist, how can the offshoot (The Resistance Front) take birth here?" India's head coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/gautam-gambhir">Gautam Gambhir</a> on Tuesday (May 6) called for a total suspension of all cricketing relations with Pakistan, including playing in the Asia Cup and ICC tournaments, after the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam.
Gambhir stressed that India should not participate in any cricketing activity with Pakistan until cross-border terrorism is completely eradicated. India has not hosted a full series against Pakistan since 2007 as a result of strained relations, and the two countries only face each other at multi-team events. Gambhir supported putting even these meetings on hold.
"My personal answer to this is absolutely no. Till all this (cross-border terrorism) doesn't stop there should not be anything between India and Pakistan," Gambhir said when asked about the future of Indo-Pak cricket in the current environment at event by organised by ABP.

"Matches will keep happening, movies will be made, singers will continue to perform but nothing comes close to losing a loved one in your family." Asked specifically about India playing Pakistan in the Asia Cup this year or the T20 World Cup, to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka next year, Gambhir placed the onus on the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/bcci">BCCI</a> and the government.
On the question of whether India could play Pakistan at the Asia Cup or the 2024 T20 World Cup, which is to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, Gambhir left it on the BCCI and the government to decide.
"This is not up to me, this is for BCCI and more importantly the government to decide whether we should play them or not.
As part of an agreement worked out between the BCCI, the Pakistan Cricket Board and the ICC, all India-Pakistan matches in ICC events will be played in a neutral country till the 2027 cycle.

Pahalgam terror attack - Indo-Pak war is part of Pakistan's 'bleed India by a thousand cuts' policy. Who is behind it? The April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, is most certainly going to lead to a fifth Indo-Pak war. The attack by Pakistan-based terrorists is the latest instance of Pakistan's military policy of 'bleed India by a thousand cuts'. But what is its origin?

<h2>Did Zulfikar Ali Bhutto actually say 'bleed India by a thousand cuts?'</h2>
Though Pakistan's former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto didn't actually say 'bleed India by a thousand cuts' in as many terms, that phrase is often attributed to him unofficially by the architects of Pakistan&rsquo;s strategic military doctrine.
In his 1963 book The Myth of Independence, Bhutto wrote, &ldquo;Pakistan will wage a relentless struggle against India, exploiting every opportunity to weaken it.&rdquo; He was advocating a war of attrition aimed at entrapping India in a constant struggle.
Bhutto's speech to the United Nations was about waging 'a thousand-year war' with India.&nbsp;
The most relevant portion comes from his 22 September 1965 speech. In an address to the United Nations Security Council during the 1965 Indo-Pak War, Bhutto said, &ldquo;We will wage a war for a thousand years, a war of defence.&rdquo;&nbsp;
He was stressing Pakistan&rsquo;s resolve to continue fighting India despite military setbacks of the 1965 war, amid India&rsquo;s advances and the global pressure for a ceasefire.
<h2>Bhutto is the ideological font of 'bleed India with a thousand cuts' policy</h2>
&nbsp;
It can be said that Bhutto&rsquo;s remarks and speeches after the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971 gave the political fuel and ideological ground for this strategy.
While it's associated with Bhutto&rsquo;s rhetoric, it was formalised as policy by General Zia-ul-Haq.
Speaking at the Lahore Islamic Summit in 1974, Bhutto again referred to a long-term struggle. &ldquo;We will fight for our rights and our honour, no matter how long it takes,&rdquo; he said, while avoiding any calls for terrorism.&nbsp;
While Bhutto did not endorse terrorism in as many words, his statements, particularly the 1965 UN speech, are often cited as the conceptual precursor to the "bleed India" strategy, which was indeed all about fomenting terrorism in India.
&nbsp;
<h2>How the 'thousands cuts' policy was turned into a military doctrine</h2>
Bhutto's speech at the UN was an example of Pakistan's defiance despite defeat, and a vision of sustained resistance to rally his domestic audience. It evolved into the "thousand cuts" doctrine, particularly since Pakistan&rsquo;s defeat and Bangladesh&rsquo;s creation after the Indo-Pak war of 1971, also known as the Bangladesh Liberation War. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions/general-asim-munirs-radical-agenda-pakistans-deep-state-terror-nexus-exposed-in-pahalgam-attack-9012213">General Asim Munir&rsquo;s radical agenda: Pakistan&rsquo;s deep state terror nexus exposed in Pahalgam attack</a>
The strategy is essentially about a prolonged conflict, a covert or proxy war with India.
Pakistan's spy agency, the Interservices Intelligence of ISI, was the main executioner of the policy.
It supported insurgencies in India, particularly in Kashmir and Punjab, and allegedly in the Northeast.
<h2></h2>
<h2>'Bleed India by a thousand cuts' became Pakistan's military-intelligence policy under Zia</h2>
&nbsp;
Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, the military chief turned dictator, translated Bhutto&rsquo;s vision into covert warfare, making it the doctrinal foundation of the policy.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/pakistan/pakistan-pm-shehbaz-sharif-refuses-to-condemn-pahalgam-terror-attack-in-his-first-reaction-repeats-asim-munirs-jugulur-vein-remark-9003697">Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif refuses to condemn Pahalgam terror attack in his first reaction, repeats Asim Munir's 'jugular vein' remark</a>
After its heavy defeat at the hands of India and the split of East Pakistan into Bangladesh after the 1971 war, it became clear to Islamabad that conventional warfare was not feasible.
&nbsp;Zia-ul-Haq, who was Pakistan's president from 1978, shaped Bhutto&rsquo;s rhetoric into the covert strategy of low-intensity warfare.
Pakistan used insurgency and terrorism to destabilise India, supporting militant groups to wage proxy wars even as it avoided a direct military confrontation.&nbsp;
<h2>'Bleed India by a thousand cuts' doctrine in action: Fomenting terror from Punjab to Kashmir</h2>
&nbsp;
The strategy aimed to exploit India&rsquo;s diversity by instigating, supporting and aiding separatism, terrorism and instability.&nbsp;
In the 1980s, the ISI set up a Punjab cell to arm Sikh militants involved in the Khalistani separatist movement.&nbsp;
In the words of former ISI chief Hamid Gul, keeping Punjab destabilised was "equivalent to the Pakistan Army having an extra division at no cost.&rdquo;
Those who received arms from Pakistan include followers of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the Khalistani leader.
Many Khalistani militants were trained by Pakistan in camps in Lahore and Karachi.
After the end of the Soviet-Afghan War, Pakistan redirected Mujahideen fighters to Kashmir.
Over the years, Pakistan funded, supported, trained and handled several India-focused terror groups.
They include Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which is behind some of the worst terror attacks in India, including the 2008 Mumbai attack and the recent Pahalgam attack of April 22.
Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), another terror group backed by Pakistan, was involved in major attacks like the 2001 assault on the Indian Parliament.&nbsp;
LeT, led by Hafiz Saeed, who continues to live under Pakistan's protection, is an internationally designated terrorist.&nbsp;
JeM, founded by Masood Azhar, have been linked to ISI backing, with its leader roaming openly in Pakistan. Hizbul Mujahideen, another group that was active in Kashmir, received ISI support.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/pakistanis-against-india-pak-war-imam-asks-crowd-who-backs-islamabad-against-india-in-viral-clip-audience-reaction-will-shock-you-pahalgam-9036059">Pakistanis against India-Pak war? Imam asks crowd who backs Islamabad against India in viral clip; audience reaction will shock you</a>
Pakistan gave these terror groups arms, training, and safe havens. It enabled cross-border infiltrations of the militants and terror attacks to create an impression of sustained unrest and instability in Kashmir.
<h2>India gave military response to terror attacks, hitting the 'bleed' doctrine</h2>
&nbsp;
The 'bleed India with a thousand cuts' doctrine worked for Pakistan as long as there was no direct military response from India. That changed over time, particularly since the 1999 Kargil War. In that war, Pakistan dressed up its regular army as Kashmiri militants, and India gave a fitting response by repelling the cross-border incursions. Pakistan's expectation that India would not respond militarily to terror strikes was dashed in 2016, when Indian Army entered Pakistan-occupied Kashmir to destroy terror launchpads behind the Uri attack, in what became known as 'surgical strikes'. India again did a surgical strike, this time using its air force in 2019, after the Pulwama terror attack.&nbsp; On the diplomatic front, India exposed Pakistan&rsquo;s terror sponsor role at the United Nations and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/pahalgam-terror-attack-will-pakistan-walk-the-fatf-tightrope-again-8998205">Pahalgam terror attack: Will Pakistan walk the FATF tightrope again?</a>
This military and diplomatic pressure started the process of unravelling the 'bleed India' doctrine, making Pakistani commentator Pervez Hoodbhoy bemoan in 2016 that the policy was &ldquo;in shambles.&rdquo;&nbsp;
The most recent setback to Pakistan -&nbsp; before it revived terror-sponsoring with Pahalgam attack - came in the form of the grey listing of the country by FATF.&nbsp;
Pakistan hurriedly jailed or put into house arrest some terror chiefs, in order to show to FATF that it is acting against terror, so that it can come out of the grey list.
Being put on that list had hampered Pakistan's ability to get foreign financial assistance to tide over its dire economic situation.
<h2>The 'bleed India' strategy has been failing, but Pakistan is still trying</h2>
&nbsp;
India&rsquo;s resilience and global pressure have diminished the impact of the 'bleed India' strategy.&nbsp; But attacks and infiltrations were kept up by Pakistan.&nbsp; The 2025 Pahalgam massacre is the latest in this series. This time, however, it faces a war that could uproot the 'bleed India' strategy.

This military and diplomatic pressure started the process of unravelling the 'bleed India' doctrine, making Pakistani commentator Pervez Hoodbhoy bemoan in 2016 that the policy was “in shambles.” The most recent setback to Pakistan - before it revived terror-sponsoring with Pahalgam attack - came in the form of the grey listing of the country by FATF. Pakistan hurriedly jailed or put into house arrest some terror chiefs, in order to show to FATF that it is acting against terror, so that it can come out of the grey list. Being put on that list had hampered Pakistan's ability to get foreign financial assistance to tide over its dire economic situation. The 'bleed India' strategy has been failing, but Pakistan is still trying India’s resilience and global pressure have diminished the impact of the 'bleed India' strategy. But attacks and infiltrations were kept up by Pakistan. The 2025 Pahalgam massacre is the latest in this series. This time, however, it faces a war that could uproot the 'bleed India' strategy.

'Bleed India by a thousand cuts' is Pakistan's doctrine that made it a terror state. But what is its origin story?

Pahalgam terror attack leads to possible Indo-Pak war, but Cyril Radcliffe caused all India-Pakistan conflicts: I watched Chhaava, on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj who fought Aurangzeb, on Netflix, days after the Bollywood film caused calls to dig up and remove the grave of the Mughal emperor, the villain of the piece. Revisionist views of history, seeking revenge for wrongs done three or four centuries ago, were at the heart of such demands. But if one were to indeed revisit history and think about who wronged us in the context of the possible fifth Indo-Pakistan war over the Pahalgam terror attack, then perhaps the story of one man - from just 77 years ago, not centuries - needs to be dug up: Cyril Radcliffe, whose name adorns the Radcliffe Line, the international boundary of India and Pakistan.
Because it is the Radcliffe Line, arguably the most unscientific international boundary ever drawn on a map, that led to the Partition of India, millions of deaths, starvation, massacres, rapes, and the past four Indo-Pak wars. It is the fountainhead of the so-called Kashmir issue. It is important that we, particularly the younger generations, know about the atrocities committed on the subcontinent by the British colonial rulers, of whom Radcliffe was a servant, leaving generations to bear the brunt.

<h2>Who was Cyril Radcliffe?</h2>
 Cyril John Radcliffe, the 1st Viscount Radcliffe was a British lawyer. Born in 1899, he studied at Haileybury College. He did an honours degree from New College, Oxford in classics, philosophy, and ancient history, the course known as 'literae humaniores'. He was sent from Britain to draw the map because the colonial rulers thought that he would be 'neutral'. For context, his mission came amid Britain's hasty plans to withdraw from colonies like India, as it was drowning under debt due to the ravages of World War II (1939-1945).
<h2>Was Cyril Radcliffe really qualified to draw the India Pakistan boundary? </h2>
Absolutely not, as his career was focused on law, culminating in roles like Law Lord and chairman of public inquiries.&nbsp;He had no expertise in geography or demographics of any place, let alone India.&nbsp;
Cyril Radcliffe had no formal qualifications in cartography or map-making, and mostly relied on census data done in the past by British rulers - which was also neither sufficient nor neutral - to draw the international boundary.
And remember that the concept of census itself a controversial one. There are arguments that, coming from a largely monotheist nation, British colonialists found it difficult to comprehend the ethnic, racial and religious diversity of the colonies, and used the census as a way to govern. Again, some argue that the census itself was part of the larger 'divide and rule' policy of the British.
<h2>How did Radcliffe become the man who made the international border of India and Pakistan?<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/women-home-guards-who-served-during-1971-indo-pak-war-pahalgam-terror-attack-india-paksitan-9038708"></a></h2>
Radcliffe was appointed to chair the Boundary Commissions for India&rsquo;s 1947 partition as he was seen to be a neutral figure. The thought at the time appears to have been that, in the middle of demands by both Hindu and Muslim leaders on how to carve Pakistan out of India, someone with no historical baggage could be a better choice.&nbsp;
<h2>How did Radcliffe draw the India-Pakistan map?</h2>
As mentioned, Radcliffe&rsquo;s process heavily relied upon outdated census data, maps, and limited input from the Boundary Commissions for Punjab and Bengal. These commissions had four representatives each, two from the Indian National Congress and two from the Muslim League. It is understood that conflicting agendas of their leaders led to stalling of the boundary drawing. Radcliffe drew the border by merging the census data and previous maps. He simply looked at the district level data for population, and considered only which community was the numerical majority in specific areas. Remember that these were tens of thousands of villages and towns where Hindus, Muslims, Christians and other communities lived side by side for centuries. But the boundary line drawn by Radcliffe cut through real geographical features, even hills, rivers and mountains.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
<h2>Radcliffe had a tough task, a tight deadline, and he chose the easiest way out</h2>
British Viceroy Lord Mountbatten was given around five months to make the transition from British India to independent India. He brought it down to just five weeks, even keeping a 'days to go' calendar behind his desk.
In total, Radcliffe was tasked with dividing some 175,000 square miles with 88 million people based on which religion was numerically the majority.

He reportedly considered factors like natural boundaries, irrigation systems, and communication lines, but in the end, clearly failed in accounting for everything. The rivers that run through both India and Pakistan is a case in point. But that's something he couldn't have helped.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Radcliffe worked from Shimla, the winter capital of the British, with no time for conducting field surveys on the ground, due to the tight deadline.
<h2>How Radicllife rushed through his decisions</h2>
 There were points in the boundary drawing process where Radcliffe took his own, unilateral decisions amid bickering among political leaders on which part should go to India and which to Pakistan.
The Radcliffe Line was finalised by 9&nbsp;August 1947, just days ahead of the August 15 Independence Day. But a formal announcement of the boundary was made two days later, on 17&nbsp; August, to avoid clashing with independence celebrations.&nbsp;
And that's when all hell broke loose.
<h2>The outcome of Radcliffe Line: World's largest forced migration</h2>
The announcement of the boundary was followed by the actual Partition of India.&nbsp;Hindus living on the other side of this border was given the choice to cross into India. And Muslims had the choice to go to Pakistan. I said 'choice' here, but in actual practice, tens of thousands of villagers had no choice but to leave everything and move to either India or Pakistan, due to fears of attacks from the other community.&nbsp;

The hasty process of by which Radcliffe drew the international boundary, in essence, triggered the mass migrations and violence of Partition, the largest forced displacement of humans ever, in which millions died.
<h2>Radicliffe had never visited India, and stayed only 35 days to cut a line through the map</h2>
Radcliffe arrived in India on 8 July 1947 and left shortly after submitting his partition map.&nbsp;All in all, he is reported to have spent only 35 days in the country.
He never returned.
&nbsp;
<h2>Did he regret his decision? </h2>
Yes, if we go by the records of his subsequent life. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/amid-looming-war-threat-jammu-and-kashmir-school-trains-students-on-survival-evacuation-9037928">Amid looming war threat, Jammu and Kashmir schools train students on survival, evacuation</a>
Radcliffe was reportedly haunted by the partition&rsquo;s consequences.&nbsp;He eventually refused to accept his 40,000 rupees fee for his work in drawing the map that partitioned India, and burned the relevant papers.
&nbsp;
<h2>Is Radcliffe the only person to blame? </h2>
No. Lord Mountbatten, and the leaders of India and what became Pakistan at the time, are equally responsible. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the staunch advocate of two-nation theory was vehement in establishing the Muslim nation of Pakistan, and argued for every inch of land. And Kashmir, where a Hindu king ruled over a Muslim-majority population, was among the most contested.&nbsp;
With the five-week timeframe dictated by Mountbatten&rsquo;s accelerated independence schedule,&nbsp;Radcliffe could not conduct thorough assessments. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/pahalgam-terror-attack-privileged-partnership-not-subject-to-says-russia-as-it-calls-for-de-escalation-between-india-and-pakistan-9038966">'Privileged partnership not subject to...' says Russia as it calls for de-escalation between India and Pakistan</a>
 He was mostly reliant on secondary sources, past British census data and non-neutral maps of India. And he put speed over precision.&nbsp;
Radcliffe drew a squiggly line on a map, and reshaped a subcontinent.&nbsp;
&nbsp;And millions suffered, starting from the Partition to the four wars between India and Pakistan.

Amid the ongoing tensions with India after the Pahalgam terror attack, UN Security Council members raised tough questions for Pakistan at its informal session on Monday (May 5). Members of the council refused to accept the &ldquo;false flag&rdquo; narrative and asked Pakistan whether the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was likely to be involved," news agency ANI reported. This came after Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the situation had reached its most volatile point in years. There was broad condemnation of the terrorist attack and recognition of the need for accountability.

After India cut the water flow through the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab River to Pakistan, Rawalpindi declared a critical water shortage as the authorities declared an emergency. Pakistan's Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) released a report saying that the Rawal Dam's reserves have water to make the city survive only for up to three months. This comes after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 in which 26 people were killed. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Meanwhile, India is also planning similar measures at the Kishanganga Dam on the Jhelum River, India Today reported. Any sort of disruption to the flow from Kishanganga would likely to make the situation more difficult for Pakistan, Samaa claimed.&nbsp;
The Baglihar Dam has been a longstanding point of contention between the two nations with Pakistan having sought World Bank arbitration in the past.&nbsp;

Pakistan test-fires another surface-to-surface missile; FATAH has a range of 120 km, says the military. The missile was fired as part of the ongoing exercise INDUS. This is the second such drill that was conducted since Saturday, May 3).
These military exercises come over a fortnight after a terror attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam claimed 26 lives. Lashar-e-Taiba's (LeT) offshoot The Resistance Front (TRF), had taken responsibility. Later, in a U-turn move, they disassociated themselves, hinting that their social media was 'hacked'.
Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media and public relations wing of Pakistan Armed Forces, in a statement mentioned, "The launch was aimed at ensuring the operational readiness of troops and validating key technical parameters, including the missile&rsquo;s advanced navigation system and enhanced accuracy."

"The training launch was witnessed by senior officers of Pakistan Army, as well as officers, scientists and engineers from Pakistan&rsquo;s strategic organisations," it further added.

Lashar-e-Taiba's (LeT) offshoot The Resistance Front (TRF), had taken responsibility. Later, in a U-turn move, they disassociated themselves, hinting that their social media was 'hacked'. Pakistan test-fires second missile in three days amid heightened border tensions with India

Pakistan&rsquo;s military is reportedly grappling with a severe shortage of artillery ammunition, leaving its warfighting capabilities limited to just four days, said news agency ANI, citing sources.&nbsp;
Reports further indicate that the country&rsquo;s reserves could sustain only 96 hours of high-intensity conflict, significantly impairing its ability to counter any large-scale offensive by India.
<h2>Arms exports and manufacturing gaps</h2>
The crisis is partly attributed to Pakistan&rsquo;s recent arms exports to Ukraine. This includes large consignments of 155mm artillery shells. These exports resulted in leaving critical systems, such as the M109 howitzers and BM-21 rocket launchers, without adequate ammunition. The primary supplier of the Pakistani army, The Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF), has struggled to replenish stockpiles due to outdated infrastructure and a surge in global demand, according to ANI.

<h2>Strategic readiness and economic strain</h2>
It is a known fact that Pakistan&rsquo;s military doctrine heavily relies on rapid mobilisation and firepower to neutralise India&rsquo;s numerical superiority. However, with declining stockpiles, its ability to execute strategies like these is under question. Sources also suggest that the matter was earlier discussed during the Special Corps Commanders Conference on May 2, 2025, where top military leadership reportedly expressed extreme concern.
Pakistan&rsquo;s ongoing economic crisis only adds to the already greave challenge and concern. Soaring inflation, burden of foreign debt, and declining forex reserves have forced the military to cut back on essentials such as rations, fuel, and even military exercises. Scheduled war games have been postponed indefinitely, highlighting the broader impact of the economic downturn on defence readiness. Yet, the country continues to provoke with continues firing at the LoC, leaving the LoC in boil.&nbsp;

Former Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa had earlier acknowledged these limitations, stating Pakistan lacked both the military and economic capacity for a prolonged war with India. The reports further suggest that Pak has begun constructing ammunition depots near the Indo-Pak border in anticipation of conflict escalation.
Tensions between the two neighbours have remained high since the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Pahalgam. Pakistan&rsquo;s defences appear increasingly vulnerable.

Pahalgam terror attack: Pak politician says 'will go to England' if India-Pak war begins | WATCH

A Pakistani Ranger has been apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) along the India-Pakistan border in Rajasthan. As reported by news agency PTI, citing official sources, on Saturday (May 3).
This comes two weeks after Pakistani forces detained a BSF jawan, PK Singh, along the international border in Punjab on April 23. Singh accidentally strayed from the international border while escorting farmers from the fields.

It was amid rising tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad and a day after the dastardly terror attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives of mostly tourists. It is one of the biggest attacks reported in the valley in recent times.
It has been over a fortnight since he has been detained. While speaking to news outlet Times of India, his wife Rajani said, "I have been receiving assurances that Purnam is well and that he will return. But there is no explanation as to why he is being held back for so long. I don't think there is enough urgency on the part of the force to get him back. I am extremely worried."
The Pakistani soldier has been taken into custody by the Rajasthan frontier of the force.

The scenic location is popular among tourists for its lush green meadows and serenity. While enjoying their vacation, tourists suddenly heard rounds of gunshots, and the armed men held many at gunpoint and shot at close range.
The Resistance Front, which is an offshoot of the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) claimed responsibility first attack. But later denied any link, hinting that their social media account that posted the statement was 'hacked'.
Condemning the incident, former J&amp;K DGP Shesh Paul Vaid said, "This is Pulwama 2 moment of India. This was a Hamas-style attack on 7 October on Israel."
On Thursday (Apr 24), PM Modi said, "Today, from the soil of Bihar, I say to the whole world, India will identify, track and punish every terrorist and those backing them. We will pursue them to the ends of the Earth. India's spirit will never be broken by terrorism."

Amid rising tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad, Pakistan's envoy to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamali the country will retaliate with 'full spectrum of power, both conventional and nuclear'. In a bid to curb cross-border terrorism, India has slapped its neighbour with a strict diplomatic response.

These measures came into effect after the terror attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22. About a fortnight later, in an interview with news outlet RT on Saturday (May 3), Jamali said, "There are some other leaked documents whereby it has been decided to strike certain areas of Pakistan. So, that makes us feel that this is going to happen and it&rsquo;s imminent."
The ambassador further emphasised that Pakistan's intelligence has evidence of planned military aggression from India, which accused Islamabad of backing cross-border terrorism on its land. He said, &ldquo;We in Pakistan will use the full spectrum of power, both conventional and nuclear.&rdquo;
Post the dastardly terror attack that targeted tourists and claimed at least 26 lives in J&amp;K's Pahalgam, India suspended the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan. Jamali said, "Any attempt to usurp the water of the lower riparian, or to stop it, or to divert it would be an act of war against Pakistan and would be responded to with full force of power, including a full spectrum of power."

India-Pakistan standoff: Citing 'leaked documents', Pakistan's envoy urges China and Russia to intervene

Amid the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan over the Pahalgam terror attack, the defence minister of Pakistan Khawaja Asif has again threatened India. He warned to strike any structure built by India to divert the water meant for Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty that has been suspended by India after the terror attack.
Speaking to Pakistani channel Geo News Asif said that building any structure on the Indus River would amount to 'Indian aggression'.
"Certainly, if they attempt to build any structure, we will strike it. Aggression is not just about firing cannons or bullets; it has many faces. One of those faces is (blocking or diverting water), which could lead to deaths due to hunger and thirst," he said.

<h2>What is Indus Water Treaty?</h2>
India and Pakistan, in 1960, made a formal agreement, called the Indus Waters Treaty, to decide how water will be shared between both the countries from the Indus river. The need for a treaty for water sharing arose after Independence when control over the river became a point of potential conflict between the two nations.
India briefly stopped water flow to Pakistan in 1948. Later, Pakistan complained to the United Nations (UN) that India wasn't letting enough water through. The UN suggested getting help, which led to the World Bank stepping in to mediate. After almost nine years of negotiation, India's then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan's then President Ayub Khan finally signed the agreement in 1960.

Fact check: Ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan sexually assaulted in jail?

Once a silent partner of Pakistan The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal chief Maulana Fazl ur Rahman turned a sharp critic of the military establishment in Islamabad over the failed economic policies and the lack of coherence between the military and civic bodies which has led to consistent isolation of Pakistan economically and diplomatically in the region.
He accused the Pakistani military establishment of alienating the pro-Pakistani establishment at Kabul.
Speaking to a crowd in Islamabad, Fazl ur Rahman called it &ldquo;a historic missed opportunity&rdquo; to improve ties with Afghanistan under the Taliban led Islamic Emirate.&nbsp;

According to Fazl this would have culminated in a pro-Pakistani regime and would have landed the much needed diplomatic support in the region.
&ldquo;From Zahir Shah to Ashraf Ghani, there have been pro-Indian governments in Afghanistan. There is an Islamic Emirate government that we could have succeeded in making pro-Pakistani with diplomatic success, but we have also pushed them away.&ldquo; said Maulana in a fiery speech.

Fazl ur Rahman criticised the ongoing standoff on the Afghanistan border as waste of resources. He specifically mentioned that the long line of freight vehicles stuck at the checkpoint is an utter waste of public money.
While speaking about the ongoing diplomatic and military crisis with India, he pointed out that the whole nation is together in the matter of India and ready to fight to end, but not in the case of Afghanistan.
He scurrilously attacked the Pakistani Military establishment for exclusivity and lack of conformity in engaging with all political stakeholders, economic planners and civil society to address the country's crisis.
