Did Pak Air Force officer own up Pulwama terror attack, call it ‘tactical brilliance’?

<p>For the past few days, headlines have whisked around the possibility of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. As always, the uncertainity looms&mdash;will there be another conflict, another round of rhetoric, or even a war?</p>
<p><span class="Editor_t__not_edited__WuRP8"><span class="Editor_t__not_edited_long__JuNNx">But to be fixated on the India-Pakistan border is to be blind to a more pressing, more pressing reality&mdash;one that plays out not in Jammu and Kashmir, but in the alleys of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/quetta">Quetta</a>, Gwadar, Turbat, and Dera Bugti. For even as Pakistan postures on the international stage, it is disintegrating not from the outside, but from the decay infecting its very center. </span></span></p>
<p><span class="Editor_t__not_edited__WuRP8"><span class="Editor_t__not_edited_long__JuNNx">Pakistan's biggest threat is not India. It is Pakistan itself.</span></span></p>
<p><span class="Editor_t__not_edited__WuRP8"><span class="Editor_t__not_edited_long__JuNNx">The truth is this: Pakistan is already at war. But not with India. It is fighting battles across its own soil&mdash;against its own people.</span></span></p>
<p>At the heart of this disintegration is <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/balochistan">Balochistan</a>&mdash;a province chained under military regimes, strangulated by institutional neglect, and crying out to be heard in a land that responds only with steel and silence.</p>
<h2>Balochistan: Abundant resources, deficient rights</h2>
<p>Balochistan is the country's biggest province, accounting for almost 44% of the country's landmass and resting on enormous deposits of natural gas, minerals, and a strategic <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/arabian-sea">Arabian Sea</a> coastline. It should be the crown jewel of Pakistan's economy. Instead, it's an open sore.</p>
<p>Balochistan has made its claims for autonomy, equal representation, and a fair share of the wealth stolen from its land since the country was founded in 1947. In retaliation, the state has dealt with its citizens not as citizens, but as insurgents. Whole generations have come of age under the shadow of occupation. Towns have been destroyed in counter-insurgency campaigns. Mass graves have been found. Thousands have "disappeared"&mdash;students, activists, professors, journalists&mdash;dropping into the machinery of the security state, never to be heard from again.</p>
<p>Pakistan's official history writes off this decades-long insurrection as terrorism, a matter of national security to be "managed" by brute force. But the reality is much dirtier, and much more indicting. Balochistan is not just rebelling&mdash;it is screaming. And the cry is being drowned out in the sound of fighter planes and the silence of complicit media.</p>
<h2>The Pakistan Army: From defense to domination</h2>
<p>Over the past few years, Islamabad's civilian government has increasingly been dismantled, granting unparalleled power to the military in the name of national security. Pakistan's army no longer just defends borders&mdash;it dictates the state.</p>
<p>The army runs huge business empires, dictates foreign policy, manipulates election results, and dominates the national narrative. It is judge, jury, and, all too often, executioner. The price of this militarised rule has been catastrophic&mdash;not just for Balochistan but for every region of Pakistan.</p>
<p>In Sindh, student movements lament the kidnapping of their comrades. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where terror war ghosts haunt villages, villagers seethe in anger against the militants and against the soldiers engaged in fighting them. In Gilgit-Baltistan, mineral-rich but politically abandoned, there are demands for rights that find no voice.</p>
<h2>The myth of unity</h2>
<p>The Pakistani establishment is only too eager to whip out the cry of "One Pakistan." But unity cannot be created by coercion. It cannot be maintained on the shoulders of disappearances, censorship, and repression.</p>
<p>The federation is breaking apart. Ethnic minorities&mdash;Baloch, Sindhis, Pashtuns, and others&mdash;are increasingly alienated, demonised, and disposable. Unifying Pakistan today is not a sense of shared purpose, but fear&mdash;fear underpinned by men in uniform and policies scribbled in secret.</p>
<p>This is no longer a set of regional complaints. It is a national crisis of legitimacy. And with state violence increasingly displacing political discourse, the underpinnings of the nation itself begin to shift.</p>
<h2>India's role</h2>
<p>It will be tempting for India to respond&mdash;to meet every insult with strength or diplomatic artillery. But Pakistan is no longer a monolithic threat. It is a house divided, weak and explosive.</p>
<p>Militarily engaging with such a divided state threatens to destabilise the region further and reinforce the Pakistani military's narrative of foreign threat&mdash;enabling it to further suppress dissent in the name of nationalism.</p>
<p>The more prudent way for India is restraint&mdash;not weakness, but tactics. Observe closely. Record the facts.</p>
<h2>A country at war with its own</h2>
<p>Governments tend to divert internal failure by creating external foes. Yet no amount of diplomatic battles or spats can hide the fact that Pakistan is a warring state&mdash;with its provinces, with its people, and with the concept of democracy.</p>
<p>The fire in Balochistan is not isolated. It is symbolic. It reflects the deeper illness afflicting the entire state structure: A refusal to listen, to engage, to compromise. A preference for control over consensus. Militarism over governance. Suppression over reform.</p>
<p>And this internal strife cannot be won with guns. Because when a state starts to lose the faith of its own citizens, no army is big enough to keep it intact.</p>
<h2>The real battlefield</h2>
<p>As the war drums beat ever louder throughout South Asia, it's so easy to concentrate on aerial bombardments, summits, and the next diplomatic crisis. But the actual war is within Pakistani boundaries&mdash;within Balochistan villages, Sindh universities, and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/gilgit-baltistan">Gilgit-Baltistan</a> mountains.</p>
<p>The conflict in Balochistan is not just a regional issue&mdash;it is a mirror reflecting the broader dysfunction of the state. Until Pakistan begins to confront its internal contradictions, any talk of confrontation with India is not just misguided&mdash;it is a dangerous distraction.</p>
<p>Before it hoists the flag of war abroad, Pakistan must fight for peace, justice, and dignity at home. Because however loudly the slogans are shouted or high-flying the missiles, a nation divided against itself is already defeated.</p>

Pakistan, World: Before Pakistan hoists the flag of war, it must fight for peace and justice at home. A nation divided against itself is already defeated

For the past few days, headlines have whisked around the possibility of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. As always, the uncertainity looms—will there be another conflict, another round of rhetoric, or even a war? But to be fixated on the India-Pakistan border is to be blind to a more pressing, more pressing reality—one that plays out not in Jammu and Kashmir, but in the alleys of Quetta, Gwadar, Turbat, and Dera Bugti. For even as Pakistan postures on the international stage, it is disintegrating not from the outside, but from the decay infecting its very center. Pakistan's biggest threat is not India. It is Pakistan itself. The truth is this: Pakistan is already at war. But not with India. It is fighting battles across its own soil—against its own people. Towns have been destroyed in counter-insurgency campaigns. Mass graves have been found. Thousands have "disappeared"—students, activists, professors, journalists—dropping into the machinery of the security state, never to be heard from again. Pakistan's official history writes off this decades-long insurrection as terrorism, a matter of national security to be "managed" by brute force. But the reality is much dirtier, and much more indicting. Balochistan is not just rebelling—it is screaming. And the cry is being drowned out in the sound of fighter planes and the silence of complicit media. The Pakistan Army: From defense to domination Over the past few years, Islamabad's civilian government has increasingly been dismantled, granting unparalleled power to the military in the name of national security. Pakistan's army no longer just defends borders—it dictates the state. The army runs huge business empires, dictates foreign policy, manipulates election results, and dominates the national narrative. It is judge, jury, and, all too often, executioner. The price of this militarised rule has been catastrophic—not just for Balochistan but for every region of Pakistan. In Sindh, student movements lament the kidnapping of their comrades. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where terror war ghosts haunt villages, villagers seethe in anger against the militants and against the soldiers engaged in fighting them. In Gilgit-Baltistan, mineral-rich but politically abandoned, there are demands for rights that find no voice. The myth of unity The Pakistani establishment is only too eager to whip out the cry of "One Pakistan." But unity cannot be created by coercion. It cannot be maintained on the shoulders of disappearances, censorship, and repression. The federation is breaking apart. Ethnic minorities—Baloch, Sindhis, Pashtuns, and others—are increasingly alienated, demonised, and disposable. Unifying Pakistan today is not a sense of shared purpose, but fear—fear underpinned by men in uniform and policies scribbled in secret. This is no longer a set of regional complaints. It is a national crisis of legitimacy. And with state violence increasingly displacing political discourse, the underpinnings of the nation itself begin to shift. India's role It will be tempting for India to respond—to meet every insult with strength or diplomatic artillery. But Pakistan is no longer a monolithic threat. It is a house divided, weak and explosive. Militarily engaging with such a divided state threatens to destabilise the region further and reinforce the Pakistani military's narrative of foreign threat—enabling it to further suppress dissent in the name of nationalism. The more prudent way for India is restraint—not weakness, but tactics. Observe closely. Record the facts. A country at war with its own Governments tend to divert internal failure by creating external foes. Yet no amount of diplomatic battles or spats can hide the fact that Pakistan is a warring state—with its provinces, with its people, and with the concept of democracy. The fire in Balochistan is not isolated. It is symbolic. It reflects the deeper illness afflicting the entire state structure: A refusal to listen, to engage, to compromise. A preference for control over consensus. Militarism over governance. Suppression over reform. And this internal strife cannot be won with guns. Because when a state starts to lose the faith of its own citizens, no army is big enough to keep it intact. The real battlefield As the war drums beat ever louder throughout South Asia, it's so easy to concentrate on aerial bombardments, summits, and the next diplomatic crisis. But the actual war is within Pakistani boundaries—within Balochistan villages, Sindh universities, and Gilgit-Baltistan mountains. The conflict in Balochistan is not just a regional issue—it is a mirror reflecting the broader dysfunction of the state. Until Pakistan begins to confront its internal contradictions, any talk of confrontation with India is not just misguided—it is a dangerous distraction. Before it hoists the flag of war abroad, Pakistan must fight for peace, justice, and dignity at home. Because however loudly the slogans are shouted or high-flying the missiles, a nation divided against itself is already defeated. Pakistan, India News: National Command Authority is Pakistan’s top civil-military body overseeing the command and control of the nuclear weapons and strategic assets

Tensions between India and Pakistan rose sharply after Pakistan launched an attack on India's Jammu & Kashmir on Saturday (May 10). Earlier in the day, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened an emergency meeting of the National Command Authority (NCA) as Pakistan's military continues strikes on Indian civilians. Pakistan claimed that its airbases, including Nur Khan in Rawalpindi, Murid in Chakwal, and Rafiqui in Shorkot, Jhang, were targeted in a missile attack. The latest aggression follows Pakistan’s repeated ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and the International Border. For two nights in a row, Pakistan has fired across Indian territory and sent drones into sensitive areas. However, Pakistan's defence minister Khawaja Asif said no meeting of the National Command Authority, the top military and civil body overseeing the country's nuclear arsenal, had been scheduled following a military operation against India … early on Saturday.” “This thing that you have spoken about (nuclear option) is present, but let’s not talk about it – we should treat it as a very distant possibility, we shouldn’t even discuss it in the immediate context,” Pakistan defence minister Khawaja Asif was quoted saying to ARY News. “Before we get to that point, I think temperatures will come down. No meeting has happened of the National Command Authority, nor is any such meeting scheduled.” What is NCA? The NCA was established in February 2000 by Pakistan's National Security Council. The NCA is the highest civilian-military organisation in Pakistan tasked with commanding, controlling, and monitoring the nation's nuclear weapons program and strategic assets. It develops policy for all of the nation's strategic nuclear forces and organisations so that national security can be ensured through good governance of nuclear assets. Headed by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the NCA is responsible for ensuring and increasing the operational alertness and security of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal. It also functions as a strategic policy-making forum for weapons of mass destruction matters. Established in 2000, alongside its paramilitary wing—the Strategic Plans Division (SPD) Force—the NCA succeeded the Air Force Strategic Command, originally formed in 1983 by then-Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Anwar Shamim. The task of the NCA goes far beyond nuclear command to encompass joint-space operations (e.g., military satellites), information warfare, missile defense, command and control (internal as well as external), intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR), as well as over-all strategic deterrence. It commands the Army, Navy, and Air Force's strategic operations, providing the Prime Minister and cabinet with an integrated military institution to evaluate and react quickly to various threats from conventional to nuclear, chemical, biological, radiological, and cyber. Members of the NCA include the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, Chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, and the Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The Director General of the Strategic Plans Division serves as the ex-officio secretary of the NCA, with the SPD acting as its secretariat.

India News: National Command Authority is Pakistan’s top civil-military body overseeing the command and control of the nuclear weapons and strategic assets

Tensions between India and Pakistan rose sharply after Pakistan launched an attack on India's Jammu & Kashmir on Saturday (May 10). Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has convened an emergency meeting of the National Command Authority (NCA) as Pakistan's military continues strikes on Indian civilians, sources revealed. 'Pakistan has no other option than a full blown war': Defence Minister Khawaja Asif says amid failed attacks on India

<p><strong>Operation Sindoor and India Pak war: Madrassas are Pakistan's 'second line of defence,' says defence minister Khwaja Asif:</strong> It is no secret that Pakistan has used many of its madrassas, the Islamic seminaries, as centres of indoctrination against India. Some sections of the global media had cried wolf after India's Operation Sindoor to avenge the Pahalgam terror attacks, saying the military action hit mosques and madrassas. This was the same line taken by Pakistan when India struck back with surgical strikes in 2016 and 2019 in response to terror attacks emanating from Pakistan. Now, Pakistan's defence minister himself has admitted the involvement of Pakistan's madrassas in activities against India, while calling them the 'second line of defence.'</p>

<p><strong>Khwaja Asif, Pakistan's loose-tongued defence minister, is a liability</strong>: Khwaja Asif, Pakistan's defence minister, is a veteran politician, but these days he is embarrassing his country with his remarks amid the India-Pakistan war. His gems are fodder for internet trolling and memes, particularly since India's Operation Sindoor to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack.</p>
<p>Asif has been waxing and waning about war and peace with India, and made public admissions about Pakistan's support to terrorists over the decades. <h2><br>'Lashkar e Taiba doesn't exist in Pakistan': Asif, soon after Pahalgam terror attack</h2>
<p>Soon after the Pahalgam terror attack killed 26 innocent tourists, Asif went on record to say that the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the parent of The Resistance Front or TRF, which claimed the attack, did not exist in Pakistan. This, even as LeT's chief was living safely in Pakistan.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Lashkar-e-Taiba doesn&rsquo;t exist in Pakistan anymore. It is extinct," Asif said at the time.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"If the parent organisation does not exist, how can the offshoot take birth here?&rdquo;, he reasoned when the role of TRF was pointed out.</p>
<h2>Asif's tacit admission of sponsoring terrorism: We have been doing the dirty work for three decades</h2>
<p>Perhaps the most shocking remark from Asif was during an interview to Sky News, where he openly admitted how Pakistan has been backing terror groups.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.wionews.com/pakistan/operation-sindoor-india-pakistan-tension-chinese-jets-pak-minister-khwaja-asif-china-foreign-ministry-9048891">Pak Defence Minister Khwaja Asif says 'can buy Chinese planes &amp; use them' but China has no clue</a></p>
<p>Sky&rsquo;s Yalda Hakim caught him in a bind by asking, &ldquo; You do admit, sir, that Pakistan has had a long history of backing and supporting and training and funding these terrorist organisations?&rdquo;</p>
<p>Pat came Asif's shocking reply: &ldquo;Well, we have been doing this dirty work for the United States for about three decades...and the West, including Britain.&rdquo;</p>
<p>He quickly added, &ldquo; That was a mistake, and we suffered from that, and that is why you are saying this to me."&nbsp;</p>
<p>"If we had not joined the war against the Soviet Union and later on the war after 9/11, Pakistan&rsquo;s track record&hellip; was an unimpeachable track record,&rdquo; he said, referring to the 2001 terror attack.</p>

<p>&ldquo; When we were fighting the war on their side way back in the 80s against the Soviet Union, all these terrorists of today, they were wining and dining in Washington.&nbsp; And then came the 9/11 attacks. Again, the same situation was repeated. I think our governments then made a mistake.&rdquo;</p>
<h2><br>'We can buy jets from China'</h2>
<p>While it is well-known that much of Pakistan's military equipment is made in China, Asif's casual remark was both shocking and amusing because, around the same time, China shrugged off its jets' involvement in the Indo-Pak tensions.</p>
<p>&nbsp;"If India can buy planes from France and use them, we can also buy planes from China, Russia or the UK and use them," Asif told CNN.</p>
<p>His remarks came around the same time as a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said it was "not familiar with the matter" when asked if Chinese jets were involved in the India-Pakistan conflict.</p>

<p>Asifs' comments came after India hit Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as part of Operation Sindoor to avenge the Pahalgam attack.</p>
<h2>Evidence of Pakistan shooting down Indian jets 'all over social media'</h2>
<p>In remarks not suiting his stature, Asif casually said that evidence of Pakistani forces shooting down Indian fighter jets during the recent tensions 'is all over social media.'</p>
<p>He was speaking to CNN&rsquo;s Becky Anderson, who asked: &ldquo;Pakistan claims it shot down five Indian Air Force jets. India says there is no evidence of that, no proof. Can you provide more details? Let&rsquo;s start with this very specific claim of five fighter jets shot down. Where&rsquo;s the evidence for that, sir?&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo; It&rsquo;s all over social media," was Asif's response.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"On Indian social media, not on our social media," he added for good measure. "The debris of these jets fell...and it&rsquo;s all over Indian media.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Anderson then said: &ldquo; You&rsquo;re the defence minister, sir. The reason to talk to you today, sir, is not to talk about content all over social media. I&rsquo;m sorry.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>'All-out war' comments even before a single shot was fired</h2>
<p>Asif is probably not aware of how badly equipped his army is. That may be the reason why - &nbsp;even before India fired a single shot - he talked about Pakistan being ready for an 'all-out war.'</p>
<p>"If there is an all-out attack ...then obviously there will be an all-out war,&rdquo; he said in a TV interview, ahead of Operation Sindoor.</p>
<h2><br>'If India is ready to back down...'</h2>
<p>In an interview to Bloomberg, Asif made a remark that showed either he's scared, or he didn't have a clue what was happening.</p>
<p>&ldquo; If India is ready to back down, they have taken the initiative; we have just responded. We have been saying all along, for the last fortnight, that we will never initiate anything hostile against India,&rdquo; he said.</p>

Operation Sindoor indo-pak war: Khwaja Asif said after Pahalgam terror attack that Lashkar-e-Taiba does'nt exist in Pakistan. Trending | India News | South Asia

Khwaja Asif, Pakistan's loose-tongued defence minister, is a liability: Khwaja Asif, Pakistan's defence minister, is a veteran politician, but these days he is embarrassing his country with his remarks amid the India-Pakistan war. His gems are fodder for internet trolling and memes, particularly since India's Operation Sindoor to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack. Asif has been waxing and waning about war and peace with India, and made public admissions about Pakistan's support to terrorists over the decades. (He should know, as he's been around for so long). 'We couldn't stop a single missile': Pakistanis are questioning the credibility of their defence system after India’s Operation Sindoor

<p>India's precision strike on Pakistani terror targets on May 7 likely killed Abdul Rauf Azhar, brother of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar. Abdul Rauf Azhar rose to global prominence with the inception of JeM in 2000. Earlier, a letter said to be issued by Masood Azhar confirmed that as many as 10 members of Azhar's family were killed in India's targetted strike in Pakistan's Bahawalpur, including his sister and brother-in-law, nephew and niece. Moreover, <span>American activist Amy Mek, founder of the RAIR Foundation hailed India for delivering justice for the brutal murder of American-Jewish journalist <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/colonel-sofiya-qureshi-who-co-led-operation-sindoor-briefing-was-once-lauded-by-supreme-court-9049044" rel="dofollow">Daniel Pearl.</a></span></p>

<h2>Masood Azhar, Abdul Rauf Azhar and hijack of Indian Airlines flight IC-814</h2>
<p>The world and particularly India came to know about terrorist Abdul Rauf Azhar after the hijack of the Indian Airlines flight (IC-814) in 1999. Rauf Azhar - the planner of the hijack - wanted the release of his brother Masood Azhar from Kot Balwal jail of Jammu.</p>
<p>Masood Azhar was arrested by Indian authorities in February 1994 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. He had entered India on a forged Portuguese passport under the alias "Shaikh Wali".&nbsp; He was held in Indian custody for over five years without being formally charged in a trial that led to conviction.</p>
<p>In December 1999, when Flight IC-814 was hijacked en route from Kathmandu to Delhi and taken to Taliban-controlled Kandahar in Afghanistan, Azhar along with two other terrorists&nbsp;Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and&nbsp;Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar were released&nbsp;to save the 155 passengers onboard.</p>

Pakistan, India News | India's precision strike likely killed Abdul Rauf Azhar, brother of terorrist Masood Azhar. Here's all about the attacks he planned and the hijack of IC814

India's precision strike on Pakistani terror targets on May 7 likely killed Abdul Rauf Azhar, brother of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar. Moreover, American activist Amy Mek, founder of the RAIR Foundation hailed India for delivering justice for the brutal murder of American-Jewish journalist Daniel Pearl. Rauf Azhar - the planner of the hijack - wanted the release of his brother Masood Azhar from Kot Balwal jail of Jammu. Masood Azhar was arrested by Indian authorities in February 1994 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. He had entered India on a forged Portuguese passport under the alias "Shaikh Wali". He was held in Indian custody for over five years without being formally charged in a trial that led to conviction. In December 1999, when Flight IC-814 was hijacked en route from Kathmandu to Delhi and taken to Taliban-controlled Kandahar in Afghanistan, Azhar along with two other terrorists Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar were released to save the 155 passengers onboard. <p><strong>Operation Sindoor Indo-Pak war clouds - After Pahalgam terror attack avenged, Pakistan lies about blasts:</strong> At around 2 am on Thursday (May 8), I was woken up by a phone call from a colleague who said that loud sounds were heard in the north Indian city of Amritsar in India's northern Punjab state. Upon checking, it was reported as either Indian Air Force sorties taking off, or Pakistan attacking India in response to Operation Sindoor the previous night, which avenged the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 that had killed 26 Indians. A misinformation campaign from Pakistan ensued in the morning of May 8, with claims that it had shot down drones from India in various cities. By evening, India spoke: Blasts that were heard in Pakistan were from India destroying Pakistan's China-made air defence system, and what was heard in Amritsar was the failed misadventure of Pakistan.</p>

India targetted Pakistan at different cities, in the same proportion and intensity&nbsp;as Pakistan. India used its&nbsp;Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems for the action.&nbsp;</p>

Operation Sindoor Indo-pak war Pahalgam terror attack Pakistan air defence system destroyed blasts in Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore truth
Trending | India News | South Asia

Operation Sindoor Indo-Pak war clouds - After Pahalgam terror attack avenged, Pakistan lies about blasts: At around 2 am on Thursday (May 8), I was woken up by a phone call from a colleague who said that loud sounds were heard in the north Indian city of Amritsar in India's northern Punjab state. By evening, India spoke: Blasts that were heard in Pakistan were from India destroying Pakistan's China-made air defence system, and what was heard in Amritsar was the failed misadventure of Pakistan. Here is what happened in short, if you are leaving without reading the rest of this story, where I will share how the Pakistani military tried to spin the narrative till India spoke. The crux of what happened is: Indian Air Force targetted Pakistan's Air Defence radars. The Pakistani air defence system at Lahore was neutralised. India targetted Pakistan at different cities, in the same proportion and intensity as Pakistan. India used its Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems for the action. Panic in Pakistan, from Karachi to Lahore and Rawalpindi after explosions As the reports emerged of panic in Pakistan, the country's military came up with a claim that it had shot down Indian drones in Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Chakwal, Attock, Bahawalpur, Miano and Chor. 'Large number of terrorists killed in Operation Sindoor,' says India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Note that Rawalpindi, a garrison town, is the location of Pakistan Army's General Headquarters or GHQ. Karachi is the financial and industrial hub of Pakistan, and its largest city as well as main seaport. Lahore is a city of great cultural and historical significance for Pakistan and a tourist destination. Bahawalpur is among the targets of India's Operation Sindoor. How Pakistan Army's propaganda wing spun the story about the blasts ISPR, or Inter-Services Public Relations, the propaganda wing of Pakisani army, came up with its spin, claiming that 25 drones have been "shot down by Pakistan's soft kill (technical) and hard kill (weapons) forces." It said the debris of these drones are "being collected from different areas of Pakistan." Operation Sindoor LIVE: 'Attack on Pahalgam was original escalation', says Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri The videos were out on social media by this time, and they told a totally different story. But naturally, there was confusion during the daytime of Thursday in India too. That's when Indian defence ministry issued a statement, clearing the air. So what happened in Amritsar on the intervening night of May 7 and 8? The Indian defence ministry confirmed the truth about that phone call mentioned at the beginning of this story. It said that on the intervening night of 7 and 8 May Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in northern and western India. Indian government halts streaming of Pakistani content amid cross border tensions These included Amritsar, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, Awantipura and Bhuj, using drones and missiles. "The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks," said the Indian ministry release. Panic-stan: Pakistan Army lied after India destroyed its China-made air defence systems across cities. Then, India spoke the truth

<p><strong>Pahalgam attack and India Pakistan war - How China equipment helps Pakistan: </strong>As the Pahalgam terror attacks of late April in Kashmir led to talk of Indo-Pak war, one country's role is worth mentioning: China. While still keeping a smile similar to the permanent expression of its president Xi Jinping, China made overtures for peace, and mostly took a line similar to Islamabad's in the wake of the Kashmir terror attack.&nbsp; China may be smiling for two reasons: A secret hope that its decades of military cooperation worth billions of dollars with Pakistan would help its aim of checkmating India in the South Asian region; and an expectation that more import orders will follow from Pakistan, for whom Beijing is the largest military supplier.<br><br>After Operation Sindoor to avenge the Pahalgam attack was carried out by India on Wednesday (May 7), China is keeping mum on whether its jets were used by China. See its response in the story below:<br><br></p>

<p>But the truth is different: China uses Pakistan to counterbalance India and secure access to the Arabian Sea. Pakistan relies on China for economic and military support even as its ties with the US and other Western powers, who used to help it with military hardware for decades, have strained over the years.</p>

<h2>Iron-clad friendship aimed at 'common enemy' India</h2>
<p>Let us set aside the recent India-China peace overtures for the moment and think about the ground situation between China and Pakistan, particularly their iron-clad friendship.</p>
<p>The two countries share an 'all-weather strategic cooperative partnership,' which includes defence hardware, joint production of military equipment, joint drills, and extensive defence trade totalling billions of dollars in value.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Here is a detailed breakup:</p>
<h2><br>Defence trade: China is Pakistan's largest supplier; Pakistan deals include China's largest to any country</h2>
<p>China dominates Pakistan&rsquo;s defence trade, accounting for 81 per cent of its major arms imports between 2020 and 2024.&nbsp;This is a significant growth from 72 per cent recorded between 2017 and 2021.&nbsp;</p>
<p>From the Chinese perspective, Pakistan is the largest recipient of its arms exports, accounting for 47 per cent between 2017 and 2021.</p>
<p>Much of the data is still hazy, but let us piece together what's available on public domain.</p>
<p>The total arms imports from China between 2019 and 2023 alone is valued at $5.28 billion. This, at the time, accounted for 63 per cent of Pakistan&rsquo;s total arms imports, according to SIPRI Arms Transfers Database and Pakistani defence ministry reports.</p>
<p><br><strong>The major deals reported over the years and their estimated total value are below:&nbsp;</strong><br>Submarines, signed in 2015: $5 billion for eight Type-041 submarines<br>Frigates, signed in 2018: $1.4 billion for four Type-054A/P frigates<br>J-10CE Jets, signed in 2022: $1.5&ndash;2 billion for 36 aircraft<br>JF-17 Fighter Jet Programme: Estimated to cost $2&ndash;3 billion since 2007<br>Wing Loong II Drones, signed 2018: $200&ndash;300 million for 48 units<br>HQ-9 and PL-15 Systems: $650&ndash;900 million approx<br>Z-10ME Helicopters: $150&ndash;240 million (estimate)</p>
<p>China offers low-interest financing and flexible payment terms to Pakistan, which helps it continue to import despite its economic challenges.</p>
<h2>Did China help Pakistan's nuclear weapons programme?</h2>
<p>Like much else in the case of Chinese and Pakistani militaries, a lot of information is shrouded in secret. It was reported by the US intelligence agency CIA that China may have aided Pakistan's nuclear weapons programme in the 1970s and 1980s.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.wionews.com/pakistan/pahalgam-terror-attack-india-pakistan-standoff-citing-leaked-documents-pakistani-envoy-urges-china-and-russia-to-intervene-9031267">India-Pakistan standoff: Citing 'leaked documents', Pakistan's envoy urges China and Russia to intervene</a></p>
<h2><br>How China armed Pakistan to the teeth: From fighter jets to missiles to submarines</h2>
<p><br>China is the main supplier of Pakistan's military hardware, which includes fighter jets, submarines, frigates, drones, and missile systems.&nbsp;</p>
<p><br><strong>JF-17 Thunder fighter Jet</strong><br>The JF-17 Thunder fighter jet is a flagship project of China-Pakistan military cooperation. The JF-17 is currently a mainstay of the Pakistan Air Force after the US virtually stopped sending its fighter jets to the country. There are reportedly more than 140 JF-17 jets in service as of 2023, at an estimated cost of $25&ndash;30 million per aircraft.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Also known as FC-1 Fierce Dragon, the jet is a lightweight, single-engine, multirole fighter aircraft co-developed by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and China&rsquo;s Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group.</p>
<p>Production of the jets started in 2007, and deliveries are ongoing, with each delivery introducing improved varieties, including the Block-3 version, which started in 2022.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The total value of the JF-17 jet programme over the years is estimated to be $2&ndash;3 billion.</p>
<p><strong>J-10CE Fighter Jets</strong></p>
<p>The J-10CE jet, an export variant of China&rsquo;s J-10C, is a 4.5-generation multirole fighter. Pakistan is reported to have acquired 36 J-10CE jets in 2022 to counterbalance India&rsquo;s Rafale jets.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/pakistanis-against-india-pak-war-imam-asks-crowd-who-backs-islamabad-against-india-in-viral-clip-audience-reaction-will-shock-you-pahalgam-9036059">Pakistanis against India-Pak war? Imam asks crowd who backs Islamabad against India in viral clip; audience reaction will shock you</a></p>
<p>The total value of the jet programme is estimated at $1.5&ndash;2 billion, with each unit costing around $40&ndash;50 million.</p>
<p>The data is from Pakistan Air Force statements and SIPRI&rsquo;s Trends in International Arms Transfers reports.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Type-054A/P Frigates</strong></p>
<p>At least four Type-054A/P guided-missile frigates were delivered by China to the Pakistan Navy between 2020 and 2023. The deal was signed in 2018 and is valued at approximately $1.4 billion for the four frigates. The costs cover construction, technology transfer, and training as per Chinese state media reports and Pakistan Navy statements.</p>
<p><strong>Type-041 Hangor-Class Submarines:</strong></p>
<p>In 2015, Pakistan ordered eight Type-041 Yuan-class conventional submarines from China, four of which were to be built in China, and four to be made under license in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard. Delivery schedule for these submarines run from 2022 to 2028, with the deal valued at $5 billion. This is also China&rsquo;s largest single arms export deal with any country. Besides the actual cost of the submarines, the deal also includes training, infrastructure for local production, financed by China at a low interest rate.</p>
<p><br><strong>Wing Loong II Drones</strong></p>
<p>China and Pakistan agreed to co-produce 48 Wing Loong II unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) for the Pakistan Air Force in 2018. It is a deal valued at around $200&ndash;300 million, with each unit costing $4&ndash;6 million.</p>
<p><strong>Z-10ME Attack Helicopters</strong></p>
<p>Reports had said earlier that Pakistan was to receive the first batch of Z-10ME attack helicopters from China this year. They are designed for anti-tank and close air support roles. While exact data is hard to come by, similar helicopters in the market are estimated to cost $15&ndash;20 million per unit. The actual value of this deal, if Pakistan orders up to 12 helicopters, would come around $150&ndash;240 million.</p>
<p><strong>HQ-9 Missile Defence Systems and PL-15 Missiles</strong></p>
<p>China has reportedly sent to Pakistan the HQ-9 surface-to-air missile systems and PL-15 long-range air-to-air missiles for JF-17 jets.&nbsp; The HQ-9 deal is estimated at $600&ndash;800 million for multiple systems.</p>
<p>The cost of PL-15 missiles is likely to be $50&ndash;100 million for a significant batch, according to SIPRI.</p>
<p><strong>SH-15 Self-Propelled Artillery</strong></p>
<p>Pakistan has received Chinese SH-15 155mm self-propelled howitzers for deployment near the Indian border. Going by the $2&ndash;3 million per unit cost for similar systems, the deal could be worth $50&ndash;100 million for a battalion-sized deployment.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Joint Military Drills: Key to 'iron-clad' military cooperation</h2>
<p><br>China and Pakistan regularly hold joint military exercises. These drills, planned or already conducted, include areas like the restive Gilgit-Baltistan and Xinjiang. Here is a roundup:</p>
<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Shaheen (Eagle) Air Exercises </strong>are air force drills held annually or biennially since 2011. The focus is on air combat, joint tactics, and interoperability. These exercises involved the Chinese J-10, J-16, and Y-20 aircraft and Pakistani JF-17 and Mirage fighters. Each of these exercises likely cost $10&ndash;20 million, based on similar international drills.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/india-pakistan-economy-9033644">Economic crossfire: How India-Pakistan tensions are reshaping South Asia&rsquo;s financial landscape</a></p>
<p><strong>Sea Guardian Naval Exercises</strong> in the Arabian Sea involved Chinese Type-054A frigates and Pakistani F-22P frigates, focusing on anti-submarine warfare and joint patrols. Such exercises typically cost $15&ndash;30 million.</p>
<h2><br>How Pakistan protects Chinese interests in Belt and Road Initiative, particularly CPEC&nbsp;</h2>
<p>Besides these, the two countries also held <strong>Shared Destiny&nbsp;</strong>Peacekeeping Exercise in Henan province in September 2021 and <strong>Warrior Counterterrorism Drills </strong>for eight times since 2019.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The counterterror drills involve China&rsquo;s Western Theatre Command and Pakistani ground forces, with particular focus on protecting Chinese nationals and CPEC projects in Pakistan.</p>
<p>CPEC, or the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, is part of the Belt and Road Initiative, China's ambitious infrastructure development programme, which has military dimensions. Estimated to be valued at $60 billion, the project's security dimension involves protecting Chinese investments and personnel in the project areas.</p>
<p>In 2024, Pakistan approved $162 million for armed forces to protect CPEC projects. Apart from this, an estimated $218 million was set aside for Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, a counterterrorism operation partly aimed at securing Chinese interests.&nbsp; The cost of this exercise is estimated to be $5&ndash;15 million, and is expected to be shared bilaterally.<br><br>If you have read through this story till here, you know why the next war between India and Pakistan, whenever it happens, will have a lot of 'made in China' aspects.</p>

Going by the $2–3 million per unit cost for similar systems, the deal could be worth $50–100 million for a battalion-sized deployment. Joint Military Drills: Key to 'iron-clad' military cooperation China and Pakistan regularly hold joint military exercises. These drills, planned or already conducted, include areas like the restive Gilgit-Baltistan and Xinjiang. Here is a roundup: The Shaheen (Eagle) Air Exercises are air force drills held annually or biennially since 2011. The focus is on air combat, joint tactics, and interoperability. These exercises involved the Chinese J-10, J-16, and Y-20 aircraft and Pakistani JF-17 and Mirage fighters. Each of these exercises likely cost $10–20 million, based on similar international drills. Economic crossfire: How India-Pakistan tensions are reshaping South Asia’s financial landscape Sea Guardian Naval Exercises in the Arabian Sea involved Chinese Type-054A frigates and Pakistani F-22P frigates, focusing on anti-submarine warfare and joint patrols. Such exercises typically cost $15–30 million. How Pakistan protects Chinese interests in Belt and Road Initiative, particularly CPEC Besides these, the two countries also held Shared Destiny Peacekeeping Exercise in Henan province in September 2021 and Warrior Counterterrorism Drills for eight times since 2019. The counterterror drills involve China’s Western Theatre Command and Pakistani ground forces, with particular focus on protecting Chinese nationals and CPEC projects in Pakistan. CPEC, or the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, is part of the Belt and Road Initiative, China's ambitious infrastructure development programme, which has military dimensions. Estimated to be valued at $60 billion, the project's security dimension involves protecting Chinese investments and personnel in the project areas. In 2024, Pakistan approved $162 million for armed forces to protect CPEC projects. Apart from this, an estimated $218 million was set aside for Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, a counterterrorism operation partly aimed at securing Chinese interests. The cost of this exercise is estimated to be $5–15 million, and is expected to be shared bilaterally. If you have read through this story till here, you know why the next war between India and Pakistan, whenever it happens, will have a lot of 'made in China' aspects.
