Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday (May 16) confirmed that India's precision strike under Operation Sindoor struck his nation's Nur Khan airbase. His admittance is going viral on social media platforms, including X, and is a rare contradiction to Pakistan's usual stance of denying India's military action.

What did Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif say?

In a video that is being widely shared on social media, Shebaz Sharif admits that he was woken by Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir around 2:30 am (local time) with news of the strike.
Addressing a special 'Youm-e-Tashakur' event at the Pakistan Monument in Islamabad, Sharif, as per Geo News, said: "At around 2:30 am on May 10, General Syed Asim Munir called me on a secure line and informed me that India's ballistic missiles have hit Nur Khan Airbase and other areas. I can tell you that by swearing on the God that there was confidence, self-confidence, and patriotism in the general's voice."
He then mentions Pakistan's use of Chinese jets and local technology to repel the attack: "Our Air Force used homegrown technology to save our country, and they even used modern gadgets and technology on Chinese jets."

BJP minister lauds admission

Sharing the video, Bharatiya Janata Party IT head Amit Malviya posted on X that "Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif himself admits that General Asim Munir called him at 2:30am to inform him that India had bombed Nur Khan Air Base and several other locations. Let that sink in — the prime minister was woken up in the middle of the night with news of strikes deep inside Pakistan."
"This speaks volumes about the scale, precision, and boldness of Operation Sindoor," he added.

Enforced disappearance continues

Amid the intensifying conflict, reports of enforced disappearances continue to fuel anger and draw scrutiny from international bodies. Balochistan independence movement: In recent days, several developments related to the Balochistan independence movement took place, including a declaration of a separate Baloch state by some of its leaders, and a coordinated 71 attacks on Pakistani forces. Pakistan has been suppressing the Baloch independence movement, even as it exploits the resource-rich province. Here is what you should know about the Balochistan quest for freedom from Pakistan.

Where is Balochistan?

Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest province by area, spanning around 44 per cent of the South Asian nation’s territory. It is also Pakistan's poorest province.
Balochistan has some 13 million ethnic Baloch population. The Balochis are an Iranic group with a distinct language and tribal culture different from Pakistan. In fact, historically, the Balochistan region included parts of Iran and Afghanistan, besides Pakistan.
The Balochistan independence movement seeks autonomy or full independence for Balochistan.

What is Balochistan independence movement?

The Balochistan's independence movement is as old as the creation of Pakistan in 1947. The erstwhile princely state of Kalat declared independence after the Partition of the Indian subcontinent by the departing British colonisers. But Balochistan was forcibly annexed by Pakistan in 1948. Over the years, Balochistan was politically and economically marginalised by Pakistan, along with human rights abuse of Balochis.

Balochistan: a land rich in natural resources, where people remain poor

Most Balochis are poor, which is strange given that their land is rich in resources such as natural gas, coal, copper and gold.
Over the years, Pakistan exploited these resources through the Sui Gas Fields, Saindak, and Reko Diq mines, among others. These projects earned massive revenues for Pakistan, but Balochis were neglected, with Balochistan continuing to be Pakistan’s poorest province.
EXCLUSIVE| 'Things have got worse in Balochistan': Akbar Bugti's grandson appeals for global support
According to recent estimates, the GDP per capita of Balochistan is $710, while the poverty rate increased from 48 per cent in 2001 to 58 per cent by 2017.

Baloch nationalists contend that Pakistan profits by exploiting its resources and channels the proceeds to Punjab-dominated elites, even as the locals suffer from unemployment and underdevelopment.

The China factor in Baloch independence movement : The fight against CPEC

In recent years, the Baloch nationalists focused their attention on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
The $62 billion infrastructure project linking China's Xinjiang to the Gwadar deep-water port runs through Balochistan and has led to the displacement of Baloch populations. Balochis are angry that Pakistan has prioritised Chinese interests even as CPEC, a part of China's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative or BRI, did not bring economic benefits to Balochistan.

Leaders of Baloch movement were killed or repressed

The Balochistan independence movement is carried out through a number of organisations, including some that use military means to fight the Pakistani forces.
There have been at least five major uprisings against Pakistan.
In 2005, Nawab Akbar Bugti, a former governor and tribal chief of the Balochis, led a rebellion. But he was killed in a 2006 Pakistani military offensive. The killing did not stop the Balochis. In fact, it reinvigorated their movement.
Nawab Bugti's grandson, Brahamdagh Bugti, who lives in exile in Switzerland, heads the Baloch Republican Party, advocating for independence.

Hyrbyair Marri, who is the son of another Baloch nationalist leader Khair Bakhsh Marri, leads the Free Balochistan Movement from London, and seeks a secular, democratic Balochistan.
Dr Allah Nazar, leader of the Baloch Liberation Front, operates from Balochistan’s Makran region, focusing on guerrilla tactics. Another top figure of Baloch movement, Ghulam Mohammed Baloch was killed in 2009, allegedly by Pakistani forces, drawing condemnation from the United Nations.

Top Baloch independence movement organisations

Currently, the top groups in Balochistan Independence movement are the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), Baloch Liberation Front (BLF), and Baloch Republican Army (BRA).
The BLA, formed in 2000 and led by Hyrbyair Marri, is the largest and most active militant force among the Balochs and has carried out bombings and attacks on infrastructure as well as Pakistan security forces. The Majeed Brigade of BLA carried out the “Operation Herof” this week, with 71 coordinated attacks targeting military and CPEC assets.

The BLF, led by Allah Nazar, focuses its operations mainly in southern Balochistan.
Another group, the BRA, tied to Brahamdagh Bugti, also attacks security forces and opposes political dialogue.
Many of these groups have set aside their tribal rivalries and unified recently, forming alliances like BRAS with Sindhi separatists to fight Pakistan together.

How Pakistan suppressed the Balochi independence movement

Pakistan’s response has been brutal, even as it suffered military casualties, including in the recent train hijacking.

‘Republic of Balochistan’ trends on X after activists declare independence from Pakistan
Pakistan has subjected Baloch nationalist leaders to severe repression. There have been a reported 5,000 enforced disappearances of Balochis.
Dozens of extrajudicial killings of Balochis have been reported by rights groups. The Baloch insurgency is now in its fifth wave since 2005 as the local discontent against Pakistan grows. Global leaders, including India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have brought attention to the plight of Balochis under Pakistani rule.

Balochistan: a land rich in natural resources, where people remain poor Most Balochis are poor, which is strange given that their land is rich in resources such as natural gas, coal, copper and gold. Over the years, Pakistan exploited these resources through the Sui Gas Fields, Saindak, and Reko Diq mines, among others. These projects earned massive revenues for Pakistan, but Balochis were neglected, with Balochistan continuing to be Pakistan’s poorest province. EXCLUSIVE| 'Things have got worse in Balochistan': Akbar Bugti's grandson appeals for global support According to recent estimates, the GDP per capita of Balochistan is $710, while the poverty rate increased from 48 per cent in 2001 to 58 per cent by 2017. Baloch nationalists contend that Pakistan profits by exploiting its resources and channels the proceeds to Punjab-dominated elites, even as the locals suffer from unemployment and underdevelopment. The China factor in Baloch independence movement : The fight against CPEC In recent years, the Baloch nationalists focused their attention on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Leaders of Baloch movement were killed or repressed The Balochistan independence movement is carried out through a number of organisations, including some that use military means to fight the Pakistani forces. Pakistan’s battle within: 7 soldiers killed in IED blast in Balochistan Hyrbyair Marri, who is the son of another Baloch nationalist leader Khair Bakhsh Marri, leads the Free Balochistan Movement from London, and seeks a secular, democratic Balochistan. Top Baloch independence movement organisations Currently, the top groups in Balochistan Independence movement are the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), Baloch Liberation Front (BLF), and Baloch Republican Army (BRA). Balochistan on the brink: Armed militants seize checkposts as independence calls grow louder The BLF, led by Allah Nazar, focuses its operations mainly in southern Balochistan. Another group, the BRA, tied to Brahamdagh Bugti, also attacks security forces and opposes political dialogue. Many of these groups have set aside their tribal rivalries and unified recently, forming alliances like BRAS with Sindhi separatists to fight Pakistan together. How Pakistan suppressed the Balochi independence movement Pakistan’s response has been brutal, even as it suffered military casualties, including in the recent train hijacking. ‘Republic of Balochistan’ trends on X after activists declare independence from Pakistan Pakistan has subjected Baloch nationalist leaders to severe repression.

Operation Sindoor: How India and Pakistan avoid nuclear war: In the days following Operation Sindoor, India's military response to the Pahalgam terror attacks, there were fears that the confrontation could spiral into a nuclear war. Speculation was rife that India hit near Pakistan's nuclear installations, but all that talk was debunked by the government. In this context, it would be interesting to understand how India and Pakistan have established mechanisms to avoid hitting each other's nuclear installations.

India and Pakistan: Two nuclear-armed states at striking distance of each other

Since they declared their status as nuclear-weapons states, India and Pakistan have been described as two nuclear powers within striking distance of each other. To avert any disastrous consequences, the two countries have set up mechanisms to inform each other about their nuclear installations.
Two bilateral agreements are key to reducing nuclear risks in India and Pakistan. The main focus is on ensuring transparency about each other's nuclear installations.

Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations and Facilities (1988)

This pact was signed on 31 December 1988 in Islamabad between then Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and his Pakistani counterpart, Benazir Bhutto. After the parliaments of both countries ratified it, the treaty came into effect on 27 January 1991.
The 1988 pact prohibits the two nations from attacking or assisting third countries to target each other's nuclear facilities. With the aim of reducing the risk of nuclear escalation, the agreement mandates the annual exchange of lists on nuclear facilities. This has been practised every January 1 since 1992, the last being in January this year. In other words, the exchange of nuclear Installation lists this January was the 34th consecutive one between the two countries.
The 1998 pact aims to enhance transparency and build confidence between the two countries.

It established a framework for confidence-building measures or CBMs in order to prevent miscalculations that could lead to nuclear war.
The pact barred the two parties from carrying out surprise attacks or assisting foreign powers to attack each other's nuclear installations and facilities.
It prevents the two countries from "undertaking, encouraging, or participating in, directly or indirectly, any action aimed at causing destruction or damage to any nuclear installation or facility in each country".

Lahore Memorandum of Understanding (1999)

The MoU recognised the need to address nuclear risks, particularly after the 1998 nuclear tests by the two South Asian nations. Stressing on CBMs and arms control, the MoU committed the two sides to notify each other of ballistic missile tests and establish communication channels to avoid misunderstandings during crises. It aims to foster trust through open dialogue and information-sharing, so that accidental nuclear escalation can be avoided.

As per the Lahore agreement, the two sides decided that their foreign ministers would meet periodically to discuss issues of concern, including nuclear-related ones.
They pledged to “take immediate steps for reducing the risk of accidental or unauthorised use of nuclear weapons and discuss concepts and doctrines with a view to elaborating measures for confidence building in the nuclear and conventional fields, aimed at the prevention of conflict.”

Operation Sindoor aftermath: Are Pakistan's alleged nuclear sites damaged? Since the suspension of Operation Sindoor, India's military offensive to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack, social media has been abuzz with unsubstantiated, unverified information on Pakistan's nuclear facilities and alleged 'damage' to them. The posts, mostly conspiracy theories containing unverified and possibly fake 'reports' and 'documents', are giving rise to massive chatter about whether India damaged, or Pakistan destroyed, some nuclear installations in the wake of Operation Sindoor.

Operation Sindoor: Social media buzzing with claims on Pakistan's alleged nuclear sites, after India struck its air force assets

Pakistan, in the aftermath of India's strikes on the night of May 6-7 following Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, has been in denial. First, it refused to accept any severe damage to its military and air bases and then about the loss of lives.
Until yesterday (May 12) ISPR, media and public relations wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces had not disclosed to details of damage. While India has been clear and declared losses as it is.

Following the dastardly terror attack in J&K's Pahalgam, India launched Operation Sindoor in retaliation for the brutal killing of innocent tourists. This led to cross-border tensions, amid all this, Pakistan has been conveniently distancing itself from the claims that it had anything to do with the attacks.
The April 22 attack was orchestrated by terror group The Resistance Front (TRF), which is an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). All these terror outfits have been comfortably housed and nurtured on Pakistani soil.
As both nuclear-armed nations were embroiled in firefighting across the border, Pakistan refused to declare its damages, which was a result of India's targeted strikes on the terrorist infrastructure in the country. When Islamabad struck Indian military facility, New Delhi responded. This time around, the Indian tri-services aimed at bringing down the military facilities. Pakistan suffered heavy losses but had its mouth sealed when it came to released the extent of damage. They had been blowing the trumpet as though they won.

Operation Sindoor: Pakistan finally accepts extent of damage, ISPR releases names of soldiers killed in Indian strikes

The Indian counterstrikes, in response to the Pakistani attack on 9 and 10 May 2025, have been seen as a symbolic message to both Islamabad and Rawalpindi. But the strikes at Nur Khan air base will be seen as a key Indian victory since it is a critical hub for Pakistan's Air Mobility Command and is near the General Headquarters (GHQ) of the Pakistan Army.
On the morning of May 10, the decision was taken, and the hero of the story remains Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, who had chosen his best pilots for the strikes under Operation Sindoor.

Important to know, that when the strikes were taking place, Pakistani Army Chief Munir had to seek refuge in a bunker, and was later shifted to a safe house. During this time, a desperate Pakistan reached out to the international community, including the US, seeking a request that Indian strikes be called off. Important to know, that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to the Pakistani Army chief on the morning of May 10, and also EAM Jaishankar.
Later in the evening, the Indian side confirmed that Pakistan had reached out to India, via the DGMO channel for talks. The Indian foreign secretary Vikram Misri announced, "The Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan called the Director General of Military Operations of India at 1535 hours IST earlier today. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time today".
Satellite imagery released by the Indian military, and eyewitness accounts on social media confirmed the Indian strikes on the key Pakistani base, including Nur Khan. All Indian Air Force pilots who undertook the mission are safe and returned back to the bases, the Indian side has confirmed as well. Earlier in the day, Pakistan confirmed losing 11 military personnel after it launched an attack on India, and India launched a retaliatory strike.
India had launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, by Pakistani terrorists. The Pakistani terrorist killed 26 people, based on religion during the terror attack.

Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has been the voice of the country, but not the kind that is trying to uplift it in any way. Visibly upset with his decorum is MP Zartaj Gul.
Gul raised the issue in the parliament, where she said the defence minister should refrain from speaking to international media if he cannot speak English. Well, her agitation comes after Khawaja Asif has been out there spilling beans about the country's association with terrorists, citing social media as proof for military operations.

"The defence minister's behaviour is grossly irresponsible. If you cannot speak English, do not go to the international media. If you cannot defend your own country, don't go there," said Gul, who seemed perturbed by Khawaja Asif's statements.
"Don't mock yourself, your government, and your state," she asserted, directing it to Asif, bringing shame to the country.
Furthermore, she called it an embarrassment: "The government has better spokespersons…and you're not doing service to your country."
In an interview with the news channel, Sky News, the defence minister confirmed that Pakistan had been associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba in the 'past.' He added, "Lashkar-e-Taiba doesn't exist in Pakistan anymore; it is extinct."
During another media interaction with news outlet CNN, he said, "It's all over the social media." This is when the journalist asked if he had proof to validate Pakistan's claims of downing Indian jets.
The comments came after India launched Operation Sindoor and targeted nine terror sites, Pakistan claimed it downed five Indian jets.
Pakistani MP says it's the defence minister's poor English skills, or is it just him speaking what he knows.

Tensions surged in Pakistan's Balochistan region on May 12 as armed militants seized a security checkpost in Kachhi district and erected blockades in Rarhsham area of Barkhan.
On Monday evening, local authorities declared parts of the Surab district and the Zehri Tehsil of Khuzdhar sensitive while military operations were underway in numerous areas. According to a local news outlet, The Balochistan Post, over 40 military vehicles and significant troop deployments were observed entering the affected region. This is believed to be Islamabad's counterinsurgency measure against the decade-long Balochistan Nationalist movement.
On the 9th and 10th May, while global attention was fixated on the Indo-Pak military confrontation, the Baloch Liberation Army, a banned separatist outfit, launched Exercise for Operation Herof, launching over 71 attacks on 51 different locations.

Enforced disappearance and crackdown on civil society

Human rights group Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) reported at least 23 cases of enforced disappearances in April, including student journalists and aid workers. The Pakistani administration denies all allegations and calls it their legitimate counter-terrorism measures.
A 2024 Human Rights Watch Report stated that Balochistan is rapidly becoming a "zone of impunity" where disappearances, custodial torture and media blackouts are routine.
"The suppression of civil society is not collateral damage- it is a deliberate tactic,"- stated the report.

Calls for Independence

On May 9, a known writer, Mir Yar Baloch, claimed independence from Pakistan. He has called for support from the Indian Government and the United Nations. In a series of posts on X, he requested that UN peacekeeping forces be deployed in Balochistan and demanded the removal of the Pakistani army from the region. He also urged India to allow a Balochistan embassy in New Delhi.

Balochistan on the brink: Armed militants seize checkposts as independence calls grow louder

In Pakistan's tri-services briefing, the DG ISPR has been tactfully twisting facts and blaming it all on the Indian media. However, it's not the Indian media that is confused, but looks like Pakistan is losing track of its own narrative.
Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of ISPR, Pakistan Army's media arm, said that the Indian media has been interchangeably using names of Hafiz Abdul (Abdur) Rauf and Abdul Rauf Azhar. Mind you, both are terrorists.
The latter, Abdul Rauf Azhar was the mastermind behind the Kandahar hijack and the brother of Masood Azhar, who has died in the Indian Operation Sindoor following the dastardly Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. The news of him being nuetralised along with 100 more terrorists was confirmed by India in one of the briefings.

Abdur Rauf, meanwhile, is alive and was seen leading a funeral at Lashkar-e-Taiba's (LeT) headquarters at Muridke.
The same funeral where terrorists were being accorded state funeral and in attendance were Pakistan army personnel. It's a photograph that speaks a thousand words and quite a statement that shocked the world.
And now, in a hasty attempt to cover their tracks, the ISPR presented a man whose records are identical to that mentioned in US' Office of Foreign Assets Control's sanctions list.
To make him seem authentic, there was a video byte of him saying, he is a cleric and is a family man.
This is on record to prove he's a terrorist, but probably a video of him saying I'm innocent was the need of the hour.

Here's what Doraiswami had said in an interview with news channel Sky News, where he held the photo of the terrorist, mentioning the how coffins were wrapped in the national flag
Doraiswami said, "This person here is a sanctioned terrorist under the American sanctions regime. His name is Hafiz Abdul Rauf; he's the brother of the founder of the terrorist group you are mentioning."
"Look who's behind him – the Pakistani military. Look at the coffins there; they have the Pakistani national flag. If you are going to be giving terrorists state funerals, what does that make of your system. Everybody knows that for the last 30 years, Pakistan has used this as a means of subcritical warfare against India."

Also read: Operation Sindoor killed Masood Azhar's brother Abdul Rauf, planner of IC814 hijack: He planned THESE attacks in India Abdur Rauf, meanwhile, is alive and was seen leading a funeral at Lashkar-e-Taiba's (LeT) headquarters at Muridke. Here's the US Office of Foreign Assets Control document: DG ISPR, cited Vikram Doraiswami, India's High Commissioner to the UK for justify his claims. Here's what Doraiswami had said in an interview with news channel Sky News, where he held the photo of the terrorist, mentioning the how coffins were wrapped in the national flag Doraiswami said, "This person here is a sanctioned terrorist under the American sanctions regime. His name is Hafiz Abdul Rauf; he's the brother of the founder of the terrorist group you are mentioning." "Look who's behind him – the Pakistani military. Look at the coffins there; they have the Pakistani national flag. If you are going to be giving terrorists state funerals, what does that make of your system. Everybody knows that for the last 30 years, Pakistan has used this as a means of subcritical warfare against India."

Terrorist or cleric? Pak DG ISPR tries to mislead to cover up army's presence at terrorists' funeral

'Justice is served': Story of the post that announced India's Operation Sindoor to the world | 'Credit goes to...'

Indo-Pak tensions - Pakistanis, Chinese used TikTok as propaganda tool: Many Pakistanis and some Chinese users have turned the Chinese-owned TikTok into a propaganda tool and misinformation campaign platform during the Indo-Pak tensions before, during and after the Pahalgam terror attacks and Operation Sindoor military operations by India. It has emerged that there are two main ways in which the Chinese-owned short video sharing platform was used: for disseminating misinformation about India, and for exhorting people to join terror organisations like Lashkar-e-Taiba.

TikTok: A terror recruiting tool?

While TikTok is not present in India, it is widely used in Pakistan. Those who can access it would see how blatantly terrorist organisations and/or their sympathisers are using it to spread Jihadist propaganda and to recruit youngsters. A Sky News investigation has found that TikTok videos were being used in areas including Murdike, where youngsters were being trained by Lashkar-e-Taiba inside what appeared to be mosques and madrassas , the Islamic seminaries. Muridke is one of the nine terror launchpads hit by India in Operation Sindoor, on May 9.

What do the terrorist videos show?

The video descriptions clearly mentioned Lashkar-e-Taiba, the terror group behind the Pahalgam attack of April 22 that led to India's Operation Sindoor. The descriptions also contained words like 313, which is code for Jihad. The videos showed children training in swordsplay, and LeT operatives roaming around with guns on their shoulders.

Terrorists among people is the norm in Pakistan

If one goes by the videos, it is a daily normal life for these terror launchpads attacked by India to see LeT or other terror group fighters and trainees roaming around or training.

There appears to be no censorship on TikTok in Pakistan, even as it is very clear that the videos are aimed at econouraging more people to join and fund terror groups like LeT to carry out more attacks against India.

Chinese TikTokers : The online 'wolf warriors' of anti-India venom

A parallel, disturbing trend was seen during the India-Pakistan tensions in the wake of Operation Sindoor. It is not a secret that several Tiktokers and 'influencers' have been used by the Chinese government as its secret progapanda warriors.

During the Operation Sindoor, there were some Chinese TikTokers, including some who appeared to speak American English, giving out 'news' the conflict. Many of them appeared to amplify Pakistani propaganda and fake news, like Pakistani armed forces downed several Indian planes, and detaining piolots. Pakistan has later confirmed that no Indian pilot has been taken in custody by it.

I am not embedding the TiktOk videos in this story, in order not to give any credence to those posts. The videos include videogame footage dressed up as Pakistani jets downing Indian fighter planes, western-looking tiktokers saying Pakistan is a great place to live, and mock re-enactments of terror attacks against India by some 'funny' tiktokers.

Why is TikTok banned in India?

In the middle of India-China tensions across the border, New Delhi banned TikTok in India in June 2020. The government cited national security concerns and data privacy violations as the reasons. The main concern was that the app might be allowing Chinese government to access Indian user data for surveillance on Indians or for spying on them.

There was fear that TikTok is stealing Indian user data and transmitting the same to the Chinese government. The main reason behind this concern was that TikTok servers were located in China.
