Modi-led selection panel to meet on January 24 to decide on new CBI director

The selection panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet on January 24 to decide on the new Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director, reported news agency ANI.
The selection panel comprises leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Chief Justice of India (CJI) besides Modi.
This comes a day after Kharge wrote to Modi asking him to bring in the public domain key documents related to sacked CBI chief Alok Verma, including the Central Vigilance Commission report and the details of the Selection Committee meeting on January 10 that led to the controversial ouster.
Former CBI director Alok Verma was divested of duties shortly after midnight on October 23 following a feud with his deputy Rakesh Asthana. Verma had contested his removal in the Supreme Court, saying due procedure was not followed in taking the action, which should have been done by the selection committee. The court reinstated him and asked the selection panel to take a call.
PM Modi-led three-member panel removed Alok Verma as director of the Central Bureau of Investigation, barely 48 hours after he was reinstated by the Supreme Court, on charges of corruption and doubtful integrity as per the findings of the Central Vigilance Commission.
Nageswara Rao was appointed as interim CBI chief.
