Kolkata horror: After staging rally, CM Mamata Banerjee writes to PM seeking stricter anti-rape law

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal state, where a junior doctor was raped and murdered earlier this month, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (Aug 22), urging him to enact stricter laws on sexual assault. The CM's letter comes amidst massive outrage against the Mamata Banerjeegovernment over the death of the doctor in a state-run Kolkata hospital and subsequent vandalism at RG Kar Hospital.

Even the Supreme Court of India pulled up the Mamata government, saying it was "unable to comprehend" how the state government was not able to "handle the issue of vandalism" at the hospital. Mamata had earlier blamed PM Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for vandalism at the hospital and even accused them of trying to destroy the evidence.

The case is now being investigated by India’s premier agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), following an order by the Calcutta High Court. The court observed "serious lapses" by the hospital administration and said on August 13 that even after five days, there had been no significant progress in the investigation by the state police.

CM Mamata, despite being the administrative chief of the state, has tried to pin the blame on rival BJP and even staged a rally in Kolkata on August 17, urging the central government to provide justice to the victim.

CBI seeks permission for polygraph test

On Thursday, CBI approached the Calcutta High Court toseek permission for conducting a polygraph test on RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s ex-principal, Dr Sandip Ghosh, and four doctors.

CBI was later granted permission by a special court.

“We will corroborate their statements with the result of the polygraph test to verify their statement given to the agency,” an agency official was quoted as saying in media reports.

India Today quoted a CBI official as saying that the Kolkata doctor was not gang-raped and that Sanjoy Roy, the person who was arrested for the crime, was the only person involved in the gruesome incident.
