India: Dancer kills hen by biting off its head during performance in Andhra Pradesh, PETA intervenes

PETA forced the police to lodge the complaint

Police in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh have lodged a case against a dancer who allegedly killed a hen by biting off its head during a performance. The incident took place in theAnakapalli district of the state prompting animal's rights organisation,the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India to step up.

The disturbing act was performed even when children were present in the audience. The video clip of the incident was posted on social media to garner cheap clicks.

After the video reached PETA officials, they approached the police in the district and managed to register the First Information Complaint (FIR).

“After a disturbing video surfaced on social media showing a man barbarically killing a hen by biting off the bird's head during a dance performance, PETA India worked with Anakapalli district police officials to register an FIR against the performer and organisers,” read a statement by PETA.

"This disturbing incident, witnessed by children in the audience, was filmed and posted on social media under the guise of entertainment,” it added.

Complaint lodged

The police stated that the FIR has been registeredunder sections 429 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 11(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (PCA) Act.

PETA India cruelty response coordinator, SinchanaSubramanyancommended Anakapalli Superintendent of Police KV Murali Krishna for filing the FIR and swift action against the perpetrator.

"Those who abuse animals are often shown to have no regard for human life, either. For the sake of everyone's safety, it is imperative that members of the public report cases of cruelty to animals such as this," saidSubramanyan.

Previous incidents

Earlier this year,distressing footage that went viral on social media, showed a pet grooming clinic in Mumbai, abusing the animals.

The incident took place at theVetic Pet Clinic in Thane where a three-year-old Chow Chow was kicked and slammed by the workers.

At the time,Nilesh Bhange, a representative of the animal rights organisation PAWS, along with others, lodged a formal complaint with the authorities in response to the disturbing incident.
