The Congress is open to the idea of Mayawati or Mamata Banerjee as prime minister in 2019 — should the opposition win — a number of news reports said Tuesday.
The reports quoted unnamed Congress sources.
The reports said the Congress sources were responding to a question from a journalist on whether the Congress was willing to back Mayawati or Mamata Banerjee as prime minister in 2019, rather than see Congress President Rahul Gandhi in the top post.
The reports quoted the sources as saying Rahul  "is comfortable seeing any prime minister other than an RSS-backed one".
"Let's see how the dice rolls," the sources added.
The talk in opposition circles is that a woman will be projected as the opposition's prime ministerial candidate. The two names leading the list, so far, are BSP chief Mayawati and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The Congress had on Sunday announced at its CWC meeting that Rahul Gandhi would be its prime ministerial candidate.
