In India's Maharashtra, a 21-year-old COVID-19 patient has died from the disease, said the Thane Municipal Corporation on Sunday (May 25).
The young patient, as per reports, was admitted to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Kalwa Hospital in Thane on May 22, 2025.
This is the second death since the recent resurgence of COVID-19 in India. Previously, an 84-year-old man with severe comorbidities died due to multi-organ failure in Karnataka's Bengaluru. While he died on May 17, the octogenarian's COVID-19 test results came back positive on Saturday (May 24).

As per the health department, in Karnataka, 38 COVID-19 cases have been reported. Of these, 32 are in Bengaluru.

Across India, multiple states, including Karnataka and the nation's capital, Delhi, have issued advisories on how to stay safe while urging citizens not to panic.
For now, coronavirus cases have mostly been sporadic, with most cases being mild and being handled under home care. According to Union Health Ministry figures, in India, as of 19 May 2025, around 257 active cases had already been reported.
Amid rising panic and with Covid-19 cases seeing a sudden rise in several parts of India, some states have already started prepping for the availability of beds, oxygen, medicines, and vaccines. This is to combat any further rise in the number of cases.
Hospitals in Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh have been put on high alert. Delhi, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have all reported fresh cases this month. The national capital has reported coronavirus cases (23) for the first time in three years, PTI reported.
In India, new variants of COVID-19, called NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, have been detected. As per INSACOG data, one case of the newly emerging COVID-19 variant NB.1.8.1 and four cases of the LF.7 variant have been reported in India so far.
