Jane Fonda, Will Smith share touching tributes for late actor Donald Sutherland

The news of legendary actor Donald Sutherland's passing sent shockwaves across the film fraternity. The actorbreathed his last on Thursday after a prolonged illness. He was 88. Oscar winner Will Smith shared his sorrow via social media and posted a touching message alongside two photos of himself with Sutherland from the set of their 1993 film Six Degrees of Separation.

"Rest in Peace, Donald," Smith captioned the Instagram carousel, commemorating their time working together on the mystery film. In Six Degrees of Separation, Smith portrayed Paul, a con artist who infiltrates the lives of an affluent Upper East Side couple, played by Sutherland and Stockard Channing, by pretending to be a friend of their Ivy League children.

Jane Fonda, too, mourned the loss of her "brilliant" and "complex" friend. She posted a photo of herself and Sutherland on the set of their 1971 film Klute and wrote,"We loved working together. Donald was a brilliant actor and a complex man who shared quite a few adventures with me."

The two had dated while working on Klute and went on to star in Steelyard Blues, as well as the 1971 anti-Vietnam war tour, F.T.A., which was documented in a 1972 film.

Fonda, who won her first Oscar for Klute, shared that she was "stunned to hear" of Sutherland's passing and concluded her tribute by expressing her heartbreak.

Sutherland's passing was confirmed by Missy Davy of CAA, who told PEOPLE that the actor died in Miami on June 20. "A private celebration of life will be held by the family," Davy stated.

With a career spanning decades, Sutherland left an indelible mark on the film industry. He was celebrated for his roles as Mr Bennet in Pride and Prejudice (2005) alongside Keira Knightley, Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H (1970), and the menacing President Snow in The Hunger Games series with Jennifer Lawrence. His filmography also includes memorable performances in Ordinary People (1980) and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978).

Canadian-born Sutherland is survived by his five children, including actor Kiefer Sutherland, whom he shared with ex-wife Shirley Douglas. He also leaves behind five grandchildren.

Kiefer Sutherland expressed his grief on social media, sharing a black-and-white photo of himself as a child with his father. "With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away," he wrote. "I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived."
