Oppenheimer

While Christopher Nolan is known for crafting some of the best cinematic experiences, he has recently received criticism for the sound mix in some of his movies. In 2020's Tenet and the recently released Oppenheimer, some moviegoers said that there were times they could not hear what was being said. Naturally, there is a certain amount of frustration among those who have seen the films, since no matter how good a movie is visually, it is a combination of sound and video, and both elements need to sync up nicely. Now, Nolan has opened up about the criticism, and said he is aware of it.

"There are certain mechanical improvements. And actually, IMAX is building new cameras right now which are going to be even quieter. But the real breakthrough is in software technology that allows you to filter out the camera noise. That has improved massively in the 15 or so years that I've been using these cameras. Which opens up for you to do more intimate scenes that you would not have been able to do in the past," he told Insider.

The thing is, IMAX cameras craft stunning, crystal-clear images but there is a tradeoff. They lack the soundproofing prowess of their conventional counterparts, resulting in the intrusive noise emanating from the motors inside, which invariably interferes with the audio.

What is Oppenheimer all about?

Starring Irish actor Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer is a biopic about J Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist who is remembered as the 'father of the atomic bomb' for his contribution to the invention of the first nuclear weapon. The bombs based on the technology he developed led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer written by Kai Bird and the late Martin J Sherwin.

Oppenheimer review

WION's review of Oppenheimer read, "As Oppenheimer unfolds, Nolan presents us with a kaleidoscope of ethical dilemmas that transcend time. The film's resonance lies not only in its historical accuracy but also in its exploration of the human condition, the pursuit of knowledge, and the choices that shape our destinies. Oppenheimer is an unmissable cinematic event. I am not quite sure if it is indeed Nolan's best work as many have said, but it definitely comes close."
