This is historic!Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia's film All We Imagine As Light has won the Grand Prixat the 77th Cannes International Film Festival. The last time India won a Juryaward at Cannes was in 1983. Mrinal Sen's Kharij won the Jury Award in 1983.
Chetan Anand's Neecha Nagar had wonGrand Prix du Festival International du Film award in 1946. Back then the award was considered the highest honour at the film festival. In 1955, the festival introduced Palm D'or which became the highest honour at the festival.
The 2024 Cannes Film Festival'shighest honour Palme d'Or went toAnora by Sean Baker.
Kapadia's film premiered two days ago at the festival in the presence of the cast and crew and received an eight-minute standing ovation from the audience.

Set in Mumbai, All We Imagine As Light narrates the story of three immigrant medical workers and talks of love and relationships in urban spaces. It stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam and Hridhu Haroon in key roles.
All We Imagine As Light was the first Indian film in competition at Cannes since 1994 and was one of only four female-directed features in the lineup this year.

India has had a great year at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Earlier in the day, Anasuya Sengupta became the first Indian actor to win the Best Actress award in Un Certain Regard segment of the festival. A few days back, Santosh Sivan washonoured with Pierre Angénieux ExcelLens in Cinematography award.
