Alia Bhatt's Jigra has a slow start at the box office. Released on the festival of Dusshera, the movie opened with lower-than-expected numbers.
Directed by Vasan Bala, the movie tells the emotional story of a sister and brother duo. Apart from Alia, the movie also stars Vedang Raina, who plays the role of Alia's brother on-screen.

Released on October 11, the movie failed to dominate the box office. On its first day, it earned Rs 4.55 crore in the domestic market. We may see an improvement in numbers today due to the Dussehra holiday.

Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh writes, ''As anticipated, the response from mass pockets is ordinary/lukewarm... An energetic start in the #Hindi heartland would've bolstered the opening-day performance. Looking ahead, the #Dussehra holiday today [Saturday] should help offset the initial shortfall... Sunday is also expected to provide a much-needed boost to the numbers.''

Jigra's journey at the box office looks tough, as it is facing tough competition from Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan and Rajkummar Rao's Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video. Bothmovies are earning decent numbers at the box office.
Rajkummar's comedy-drama has started well, earning Rs 5.71 crore in the domestic market. If we talk about Rajinikanth's movie, it has crossed the Rs 50 crore mark at the box office.
As per Sacnilk, Rajinikanth's moviehas earned Rs 55.7 Cr [Ta: 49.2 Cr ; Te: 5.4 Cr; Hi: 1 Cr; Ka: 0.1 Cr].
Jigra is the lowest opener of Alia's career after 2014's Highway, which was the second movie of her career. If we look at Alia's career, she has delivered several box office hits like Raazi, Dear Zindagi, Gangubai Kathiawadi, Brahamstra and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani among others.
WION's review: Alia Bhatt is the real 'jigra' of Vasan Bala's film
Coupling a sibling story with a prison break format, what Jigra gets right is the emotional quotient of the film. But it's the other part that doesn't quite work. Prison escape movies aren't new to cinema and same for its tropes, which is why it's important for the ride to the climax be worthwhile. While the film puts on an earnest attempt, it does lose momentum and pace in a few scenes in the second half. It's established early on that the film is a rather filmy story - almost an ode to Bollywood action thrillers of the 90s - and it makes you wish for the punches to land. But at over 153 minutes, Jigra feels slightly stretched, predictable and monotonous. Read the full review here.
