Defending champion England beat the USA by 10 wickets on Sunday (June 23) in Super 8 stage match to become first side with a semi-final berth in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

Chasing a target of 116, England cruised home in 9.4 overs with all 10 wickets in hand. English skipper Jos Buttler led the small chase with a blistering 83 not out off just 38 balls while his opening partner Phil Salt scored unbeaten 25 off 21. Buttler hit seven sixes and six fours in innings.

England reached fifty in 5.2 overs before finishing the powerplay with 60 runs on board. Buttler then upped the ante as they scored remaining 46 runs in just 3.4 overs.

Earlier, England won the toss and elected to field first. The decision proved right in the first over itself with Reece Topley removing USA opener Andries Gous on the sixth ball of the match.

Nitish Kumar and Steven Taylor then added 34 runs for the second wicket before Sam Curran dismissed the latter on a team score of 43. England leg spinner Adil Rashid then took wickets in his two consecutive overs to dent USA's innings.

Part-time spinner Liam Livingstone then removed Milind Kumar on the last ball of the 15th over to bring USA five down for 88 runs. Former New Zealand international Corey Anderson (29 off 28), meanwhile, tried to keep the innings going.

Harmeet Singh also offered some resistance with 17-ball 21 and took the team past 100. He was dismissed on the last ball of the 18th over by Sam Curran.

Chris Jordan then took remaining four wickets in the next five balls without giving away a run as USA were dismissed for a paltry 115 in 18.5 overs.

England finished the Super 8 stage with two wins and a loss in three games.
