Suryakumar Yadav is all set to be named India's T20I skipper and not Hardik Pandya for the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. The news was reported by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo lateon Tuesday (Jul 16).
Hardik was Rohit Sharma's deputy at the recently concluded T20 World Cup following which Rohit announced his retirement from the shortest format along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja.
Hardik, who is a more experienced captain than Surya, lost out on captaincy due to his fitness-related issues, reported ESPNCricinfo.
The all-rounder has captained India in three ODIs and 16 T20Is to go with a two-year stint as Gujarat Titans skipper in the Indian Premier League (IPL) apart from leading Mumbai Indians in the 2024 IPL season.
Most recently, Hardik suffered an ankle injury in the ODI World Cup 2023 during the match against Bangladesh and returned to the national side only in the T20 World Cup. He, however, played a full season with Mumbai Indians as skipper.
Surya, on the other hand, was India's skipper during the 4-1 T20I series win against Australia following the ODI World Cup 2023 and in the 1-1 drawn series against South Africa thereafter.
Rohit then returned to lead India in a three-T20I series against Afghanistan in January earlier this year.
Surya has also led Mumbai in the domestic circuit too and is a first-choice name in India's T20I side after Rohit, Kohli and Jadeja's departure.
The tour of Sri Lanka where India will play three T20Is on July 27, 28 and 30 to go with three ODIs on August 2, 4 and 7 will also be new head coach Gautam Gambhir's first assignment.
Gambhir took over from Rahul Dravid after India's T20 World Cup glory. The former Indian opener has coaching experience in IPL and had led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in the 2024 season as a mentor.
