Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer is reportedly locked in as Team India’s next T20I skipper should the BCCI selectors decide against continuing with Suryakumar Yadav after IPL 2026. SKY’s form has been a worry for the BCCI selectors and his IPL team (Mumbai Indians), leaving no option but to put him on notice; also, considering the next two assignments two years later (2028 LA Games and the T20 World Cup), the decision-makers are contemplating his role moving forward. Iyer’s journey from an emerging superstar to a marquee player to an IPL captain is all but fascinating. After being out of the team for more than two years, Ishan Kishan made a strong comeback to the India squad following his impressive performances for Jharkhand in the 2025 edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The 27-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was selected ahead of Jitesh Sharma for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand in Jan 2026 and also for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. 'It was completely on gut...': Suryakumar Yadav on selecting Ishan Kishan over Jitesh Sharma

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting praised the leadership of India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav during his first ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as skipper and said that although Suryakumar did not perform very well with the bat, but he still did an excellent job leading the team. During the tournament, the 35-year-old scored 242 runs in nine innings and his best performance was an important unbeaten innings of 84 runs from 49 balls against the United States, which helped save the match for India. Speaking on The ICC Review, Ponting explained that leadership is not only about what happens on the field. From MS Dhoni to Suryakumar Yadav, 5 captains to lead India in a World Cup final (men’s senior only)

Ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav and New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner expressed about how pressure feels when playing on the biggest stage in international cricket. For Suryakumar, playing a World Cup final at home brings more than just excitement. He said the match creates a mix of emotions, including pressure and nervousness. Even though expectations are high for both the teams, he believes there is a balance between excitement and stress. He said there is about “50 percent pressure and 50 percent excitement” and admitted that the players do feel nervous before such an important game. The 35-year-old also said that India reached the final because of teamwork. Instead of relying on one or two players to perform brilliantly, the team succeeded because many players made small but important contributions during matches. He explained that the team values these moments and often remembers them in the dressing room, which helps build a strong team spirit. “There are a lot of moments from game one till we reached the final,” he said. “When we are in the dressing room, we don’t forget those small contributions. ’50 percent pressure, 50 percent excitement’: Suryakumar Yadav ahead of T20 World Cup 2026 final

India captain Suryakumar Yadav, on the eve of T20 World Cup final 2026 against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, appeared relaxed during the pre-match press conference. Leading India for the first time at a World Cup, the skipper admitted there is pressure, but also expressed excitement ahead of the summit clash.“As a leader, there would be pressure; I cannot deny that. Definitely, there would be added pressure, the excitement is there of playing a World Cup final that too in India,” acknowledged SKY, as he is fondly called, while answering the question about Varun Chakaravarthy's place in the Playing XI for the final.
Will Varun Chakravarthy be dropped from India's Playing XI in the final?
The Indian captain addressed Varun Chakravarthy’s recent dip in form in the press conference as well. The mystery spinner, currently ranked number 1 in T20Is, was exceptional during the group stage of the tournament - picking up nine wickets in four innings at an average of 6.88 and an economy rate of 5.16. Come Super 8, he has managed just four wickets in three matches, averaging 46.50, while his economy rate has climbed to 11.62.Also Read - T20 World Cup 2026 Final: How will Ahmedabad pitch play in IND vs NZ clash?Chakravarthy finished with figures of 1 for 64 in four overs against England in the semi-final, the most expensive spell by an Indian bowler in T20 World Cup history. T20 World Cup 2026, IND vs ENG: Top 5 match-ups which can decide semi-final winner

India are set to face England in T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final at Wankhede in Mumbai on Thursday (Mar 5) for a place in the second cosecutive final. For India, the loss in 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final would be vivid when England had beaten them by 10 wickets. England went on to win the 2022 edition but India then came back stronger and won the 2024 edition. The match promises to be a humdinger for sure and there are many Indian players who wold be hoping for the revenge of 2022 nadir.
T20 World Cup 2026: Top 5 Indian players to watch out for vs England
The Indian team has been a bit scratchy in the tournament including in the last match when they chased a record total to beat West Indies in the virtual quarter-final. His aura, however, does not diminish despite no runs in the tournament and England are well aware of that. If Abhishek gets going, which India will hope and England would paray against, the match soon could become an one-sided affair.Jasprit Bumrah: Arguably the best bowler right now in the world. Bumrah is always a match winner irrrespective of the platform, situation, format or conditions. He will surely be a key player if India are to win the semi and enter final to defend their title which he had helped win two years back.Varun Chakravarthy: The number 1 T20I spinner who has been a key for India in the last couple of years or so, Chakaravarthy, will surely be someone to watch out for. England do not have a good repo about playing spin and Varun will definitely be hoping to make the Englishmen dance to his tunes.Suryakumar Yadav: The Indian skipper, like Abhishek, has been out of form but he's playing at his home ground in what probably could be his last T20 World Cup. SKY's class is never in doubt and if he manages to find form at a ground he knows inside out, India will be in far more comfortable position to win the contest.Hardik Pandya: The ace Indian all-rounder is a key piece of puzzle for the team, bowlign crucial overs and breaking partnerships as well as hitting meaty blows during chase and while setting a target. Pandya offers much needed flexibility in the team and can very well be the match winner for India.

India have been a bit scratchy in the tournament but the 10-wicket loss by hands of England in 2022 T20 World Cup should be enough to provide the motivation for SKY and team as they try to get one step closer to defending their title.

Suryakumar Yadav: The Indian skipper, like Abhishek, has been out of form but he's playing at his home ground in what probably could be his last T20 World Cup. SKY's class is never in doubt and if he manages to find form at a ground he knows inside out, India will be in far more comfortable position to win the contest. Hardik Pandya: The ace Indian all-rounder is a key piece of puzzle for the team, bowlign crucial overs and breaking partnerships as well as hitting meaty blows during chase and while setting a target.

T20 World Cup 2026 | South Africa vs West Indies - Which team should Indian fans support

India skipper Suryakumar Yadav has asserted that 'nothing will change' as far as the team's approach is concerned in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 matches. The statement came after India lost their first Super 8 match against South Africa by 76 runs and now must win against both Zimbabwe and West Indies to have better chances for advancing to the semis. India batters failed to chase 188-run target on Sunday (Feb 22) in Ahmedabad - their first loss in the ICC white-ball tournaments since losing the 2023 ODI World Cup final - coincidentally at the same venue. India's loss to South Africa was first after 17 consecutive wins in ICC white-ball matches - a world record streak.
SKY on India's approach in upcoming Super 8 matches
Speaking on their upcoming matches, Suryakumar was clear on the team would proceed: "Hopefully bat well, bowl well and field well. That's it. We'll try and keep it simple. Play the same brand of cricket which we want to play and nothing changes and I think we'll come back strong."India lost 26/3 inside the powerplay before becoming 51/5 as the chased was all but done before the 10th over. No Indian batter could score in excess of 20 except all-rounder Shivam Dube, who managed 42 off 37 balls. Also Read - T20 WC 2026 | 'Win vs ZIM, WI &...': How can India qualify for semis post SA lossDecoding where India lost the match, SKY said: "We lost too many wickets in the Powerplay.
