Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to reappoint veteran opener Rohit Sharma as their captain ahead of IPL 2027, replacing Hardik Pandya. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has asked the team management to stop seeking a like-for-like replacement for injured all-rounder Hardik Pandya, whom he calls irreplaceable. Pandya has been away from all cricket action since IPL 2026 and was not picked for the white-ball leg of the away New Zealand series starting October 22. He's got all the talent and all the ability to do that, but for us it's just important to manage him quite well, to give him quite a simple role in terms of what he needs to do for the team,” he continued.

Reddy Ready to Take All-Rounder’s Spot: Morkel Team India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel believes that Nitish Reddy could fight for that all-rounder’s spot in the Indian team. After impressing with his maiden Test hundred at the MCG in December 2024, Reddy began emerging as a prospect across formats, with his bowling building on that momentum. In Pandya’s absence, India is keen on having a seam-bowling all-rounder in their ranks, and Reddy’s gradual rise keeps him ahead of his contemporaries. "I think Nitish, if we just rewind to the T20s, the way he bowled in different situations has been very impressive," Morkel said of Reddy’s talent. "The message to him all the time is just to keep things simple and do the basics as well as possible. I think he's a very talented guy when it comes to bat, ball and field. He always wants to be the guy who wants to create opportunities, and having that mindset is fantastic." "I think the role that we want him to play in certain situations is: how can we ask him to be as consistent; how well can he fulfil just doing the basics as best as possible. I think that is another thing where we need to give him those opportunities to learn and grow. "Luckily, we do have a bit of time now, and it will be great for Indian cricket if we can keep on developing him and for him to compete for that allrounder spot. He's got all the talent and all the ability to do that, but for us it's just important to manage him quite well, to give him quite a simple role in terms of what he needs to do for the team,” he continued.

IPL 2027: Hardik Pandya's bid to be reunited with Gujarat Titans hits captaincy roadblock - Report

Hardik Pandya's future with Mumbai Indians hangs in the balance after the franchise missed the playoffs for two straight seasons under his captaincy, finishing near the bottom of the table in 2026. Mumbai Indians are set for another major leadership shake-up after a disastrous IPL 2026 campaign, with media reports claiming Hardik Pandya is likely to lose the franchise captaincy. The five-time champions endured one of their worst seasons in recent years, finishing ninth on the points table with just four wins from 14 matches. Despite entering the tournament with a core featuring Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Trent Boult, MI never found consistency under Hardik’s leadership. The Indian Express reported that discussions around a captaincy change have already begun within the franchise after another season without a playoff appearance. IPL 2026 | MI skipper Hardik Pandya left feeling 'hurt' by fans in loss against SRH at Wankhede

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya admitted that his side struggled to recover from early setbacks in their heavy 103-run loss to Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2026 clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday (Apr 23). Reflecting on the defeat, Pandya said losing wickets in the powerplay made the chase difficult and the team couldn’t regain control while pursuing a target of 208. "I think that in the power play, losing that early wicket is always going to be tricky. You are always chasing the game, and we could not cope after that," Pandya said. Addressing questions on whether the pitch behaved differently during the chase, the MI skipper dismissed the suggestion and credited CSK's batting performance. "I would not say that. I'm not someone who would like to say that. They batted well; they scored 207. It was the same track, it is the same soil. IPL 2026 | ‘We should have batted better’: MI skipper Hardik Pandya on 103-run loss to CSK

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar lauded Shreyas Iyer for a spectacular relay catch that removed Hardik Pandya during the Indian Premier League 2026 clash between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians on Thursday (Apr 16), describing it as “one of the finest catches” he has witnessed live. On the third delivery of the 18th over, bowled by Marco Jansen, Pandya struck the ball towards the boundary, appearing certain to clear it. Iyer, stationed at long-on, sprinted across and leapt into the air, catching the ball mid-flight with a reverse cup before tossing it to Xavier Bartlett, who safely completed the relay. A complaint has been registered against Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya for disrespecting the national flag during celebrations after winning the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. The complaint was filed by Pune-based advocate Wajid Khan Bidkar at the Shivaji Nagar police station in Maharashtra, accusing Pandya of insulting the national flag during the on-field celebrations after the victory in the final against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (Mar 8). The complaint has been filed after multiple videos from the victory celebrations surfaced on social media showing Hardik Pandya celebrating and dancing with the national flag. In another clip, he was also seen lying on the stage with the flag wrapped around him while continuing the celebrations.

I have never seen Bigger Cringe attention seekers than Hardik Pandya and Mahieka Other players also celebrate with their Wives or Girlfriends on the field, but no one behaves like this pic.twitter.com/knGs844HyZ— Veena Jain (@Vtxt21) March 9, 2026

Advocate Wajid Khan Bidkar has contended that the act shows disrespect to the national flag and breaches the provisions of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. “ Hardik Pandya was dancing with his girlfriend in celebration of his victory. The national flag was tied to his back. According to Section 2 of the 1971 National Flag Act, we should respect the dignity of the national flag. However, Hardik Pandya was so lost in the celebration of his victory that he was lying with his girlfriend, wearing the national flag,” he said, Indian news agency ANI reported.

The national flag represents the entire nation
He said the police initially raised questions about jurisdiction since the incident took place in Ahmedabad. However, Khan maintained that a complaint could still be lodged because the national flag represents the entire country. “When I went to file the complaint, they told me the incident occurred there, not here. I told them the national flag is a symbol of the entire nation, and we can file a complaint here. They have accepted my complaint and given me a copy,” he said. A police official at the Shivaji Nagar Police Station confirmed that the application had been received, but declined to share further details about any possible action.
Fundamental duty to respect the flag
According to Article 51A(a) of the Constitution, it is the fundamental duty of every citizen of India to "abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem". This duty was added by the 42nd Amendment Act in 1976 to foster patriotism and national unity. The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, criminalises the desecration of or insult to the National Flag, which is punishable by up to three years of imprisonment or with a fine, or both. Also read: Winter Paralympics | WATCH - German athletes deny selfie with Russians after turning back at podium
