"I don't think there's a batsman that I can remember watching play...the sense of inevitability about scoring runs that Joe Root gives off. I called it when he was on about 6 today, that he was going to get 100. I know he's in great form, but it's just a pleasure to watch a master, a craftsman at work," he added.

On Saturday, Root scored his 34th Test ton as he broke the record for most hundreds by an Englishman. Root 103 in the second innings before getting out. His innings consisted of 10 fours and was scoring at a strike rate of 85. His ton saw England post 251 in the second innings having earlier posted 427 in the first innings. Root scored 143 in the first innings while Gus Atkinson scored 118 off 115 to help England get in pole position to win the Test match.

Root eyes another Cook record

Interestingly, Root is on the brink of breaking another Cook record as he needs 96 more runs to become the highest-scoring Englishman in Test cricket. At the time of writing, Root is on 12377 runs while Cook is on 12472 runs, giving the 33-year-old a great opportunity to break the record. He is also 3545 runs short of Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of most Test runs. With age on his side, Root could sooner rather than later break the record for most Test runs in the history.
