New Delhi, India

Outgoing India head coach Rahul Dravid gave a special instruction to Virat Kohli after India's T20 World Cup 2024 win. On Saturday (June 29), India beat South Africa by 7 runs in an epic final, at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, to clinch their second T20 WC title. After Rohit Sharma-led India's win, captain Rohit and Virat Kohli -- who stood out with an impressive 76 (59) in the final -- announced their decision to retire from T20Is. During India's celebrations in the dressing room, Dravid gave a special instruction to Kohli, saying 'all three whites ticked off, one red to go...tick it'. Thus, he pointed out that Kohli has won all white-ball ICC titles and urged him to win the World Test Championship.

Speaking about Kohli, the 35-year-old has won the ODI World Cup (in 2011), Champions Trophy (in 2013) and now also is a T20 WC-winner. While he had an ordinary run in the just-concluded mega event, held in West Indies and the USA, he came to his usual best in the summit clash. After Rohit & Co. opted to bat first, they were reeling at 34-3 before Kohli held one end firmly to take India to 176-7, with good contributions from Axar Patel (47) and Shivam Dube (27).

In reply, Proteas were on course for a win, courtesy of Heinrich Klaasen (52), before Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya held their nerves to take India to a narrow 7-run win in the mega finale.

After the contest, Kohli announced retirement from T20Is. He will now focus on winning the ongoing 2023-25 WTC and also the Champions Trophy (to be held early next year).
