With a day to go for the start of India’s first home Test series of the season, former wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has backed Gautam Gambhir to succeed. India will take on Bangladesh on Thursday in the opening test match of the two-match series, marking Gambhir’s debut as test coach. According to Karthik, players will enjoy Gambhir’s leadership and company as they look to set a marker in the World Test Championship (WTC) final race.

"His aggression has generally come out in protection of his players and that is something the current lot of players will enjoy. Knowing him, he is not someone who gets angry for the heck of it," Karthik told reporters on the sidelines of a Legends League Cricket event.

"I'm sure he will have his turn with strong words for whoever is required, and it is in his best interest to get the best out of the players," he added.

India will take on Bangladesh in the opening Test in Chennai as vital points in the WTC final cycle are up for grabs. Key players like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah will return for India in the opening Test. They all skipped the start of the domestic season which included the Duleep Trophy and only arrived in Chennai last week.

India are set to return to Test action after March when they beat England 4-1 in the five-match series. According to reports, a BCCI official confirmed that KL Rahul is all set to get the nod in the Playing XI ahead of Sarfaraz Khan. The duo is battling for a spot in the middle-order as India prepares for a crunch next few months in red-ball format with the Australia tour also on the horizon.

Rohit Sharma (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dhruv Jurel (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Yash Dayal.
