Vocal Israel critic and 'squad' ally Jamaal Bowman loses Democratic primary to George Latimer

Vocal Israel critic and 'squad' ally Jamaal Bowman loses Democratic primary to George Latimer

Progressive Representative Jamaal Bowman (D-NY)

Progressive Representative Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), a staunch critic of Israel, was handed over a massive blow in the Democratic primary for New York's 16th District by a candidate who is linked to the pro-Israel lobby. The clash between Bowman and Westchester County Executive George Latimer turned out to be the most expensive than any house primary in the country's history, with ad tracking firm AdImpact estimating the total ad spending to be around $25 million. About $15 million of that came from the United Democracy Project, a powerful pro-Israel lobby. Latimer was leading Bowman 56 per cent to 44 when 66 per cent of the votes were counted.

It's now clear Latimer will be the next congressman from New York’s 16th district as a Democratic nominee, making Bowman the first incumbent Democratic lawmaker to lose a primary cycle. This also comes as a stunning blow to the so-called “squad” alliance of progressive lawmakers, comprising Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Summer Lee, D-Pa. All of them were also targeted by pro-Israel groups but they survived primaries.
