Toxic methanol claims over 700 lives in Iran after being misjudged as COVID-19 cure

Iran has seen over 700 deaths after these people ingested toxic methanol, thinking that it can cure the new novel coronavirus.

According to the national coroner's authority, the toxic alcohol has killed 728 people from February 20 to April 7 out of which 525 deaths were due to Methanol. It has poisoned more than 5,000.

The Iranian government had asked the methanol manufacturers to add artificial colour so that people could differentiate it from Ethanol because the substance is odourless and colourless. Methanol can cause delayed organ and brain damage with symptoms like chest pain, nausea, hyperventilation, blindness and even coma.

Iranian health ministry released a statement saying that more than 90 people have lost their eyesight or damaged eyes due to the toxic substance.

A few days ago, Donald faced a lot of criticism for suggesting that COVID-19 patients might be injected with disinfectant. While he backtracked on his statement saying he was being sarcastic.

Iran on Tuesday reported 71 deaths due to coronavirus in the last 24 hours taking the death toll to 5,877 which is the highest in the Middle East.

On Monday, the country had reported 96 deaths from the novel coronavirus.

There are now over 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 infection in the country, with 92,584 the total number of infections in the country.
