Japanese politician suggests 'women should remove uteruses after 30’; apologises

A Japanese opposition party leader recently suggested a hypothetical idea saying that women should have their uteruses removed after turning 30, as this can help them feel that there is a “time limit” on childbirth. He has now apologised for his remarks.
Naoki Hyakuta, head of the Conservative Party of Japan made the remarks during a discussion about the country’s declining birth rate. With the statement, he seemed to suggest that if this is done, then women might choose to have children earlier.
The suggestion was made by Hyakuta, who came up with the controversial idea while talking on a YouTube programme on Friday. However, he stated that he did not support the idea.
Hyakuta accepted on Sunday that the remarks were not right. “I will retract them and apologise as there were people who found them unpleasant,” he said.
He also apologised on social media platform X and admitted that his remarks were “undeniably something extremely harsh”. He also reiterated that the idea was merely “science fiction” and “something that should not happen”.

Inappropriate even as ‘science fiction’ scenario
Hyakuta also faced criticism from his own party member as he made the suggestion on the show. Kaori Arimoto, a senior member who was also a part of the programme, told him that the idea was inappropriate even as a “science fiction” scenario.
Hyakuta defended by saying, “I was explaining about the time limitation (faced by women in giving birth) in a plain way.”
Arimoto said on the show that the society is changing and some people do not see a link between having children and happiness. When she asked Hyakuta on how this trend can be reversed, he said it requires changes to the social structure.
This is when he said that if hypothetically women believed that the time to have children was limited, they might have them earlier.
