In a dramatic display of outrage, Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan shredded a copy of the UN Charter during theUnited Nations General Assembly session in New York on Friday (May 10). This happened as a resolution supporting full UN membership for Palestine was overwhelmingly passed during the session.
The UNGA in an overwhelming vote passed a resolution asking the Security Council to make Palestine, which has UN observer status, a full member. The resolution, which was proposed by the United Arab Emirates, received the backing of 143 nations, including India.
While 25 countries abstained, nine, including the United States and Israel, opposed it.
This vote grants Palestine, currently an observer state, a stronger push towards full membership, a status that must ultimately be approved by the Security Council.
Ambassador Erdan vehemently criticised the resolution, branding it a "clear violation" of the UN Charter and accusing the General Assembly of bypassing a US veto that was cast in the Security Council the previous month.
"This day will go down in infamy," Erdan declared during his impassioned speech. "I want the entire world to remember this moment, this immoral act...today I want to hold up a mirror for you, so you can see what exactly you are inflicting upon the UN Charter with this destructive vote. You are shredding the UN Charter with your own hands," he told the assembly members as he held up a miniature shredder and shredded a copy of the UN charter.

Today, I demonstrated to the General Assembly what they are doing to the UN Charter by ignoring it and shredded it on the stage. I told the ambassadors that today will go down in infamy and I want the world to remember when they shredded the UN Charter to advance a Nazi regime… pic.twitter.com/NulOtHsAdK — Ambassador Gilad Erdan גלעד ארדן (@giladerdan1) May 10, 2024
Erdan escalated his rhetoric by saying that the resolution opens up the UN to "modern day Nazis," a reference to Hamas.
Calling Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, "the Hitler of our times," he said, "Today, you are also about to grant privileges and rightsto the future terror state of Hamas. You have opened up the United Nations for modern day Nazis, to the Hitler of our times."

Holding up an image of Sinwar, Erdan further added, "I present to you the future outcome of today's vote...the soon-to-be President, Yahya Sinwar, President tyrant of the State of Hamas, sponsored by the UN, and he owes his deepest gratitude to you, the General Assembly."
This is the future president of the terrorist state that the UN is promoting‼️ I showed the ambassadors the picture of Yahya Sinwar and made clear: in the future you will have to explain why you did everything to give today's Nazis a state of terror. Israel's Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, echoed Erdan’s sentiments, denouncing the resolution as an "absurd decision" that underlines the UN's "structural bias."
He argued that "the message that the UN is sending to our suffering region: violence pays off."
"The decision to upgrade the status of Palestinians in the UN is a prize for Hamas terrorists after they committed the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust."
On the other side, Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour welcomed the resolution as a significant step forward for Palestine's international recognition and stated that the Palestinian Authority would pursue full membership through the Security Council. However, this move is likely to face a US veto, mirroring a similar veto in April that blocked a resolution from advancing.
