UN General Assembly votes for granting Palestine new rights, member status

On Friday (May 10), the UNGeneral Assembly voted to provide Palestine with additional "rights and privileges" and urged the Security Council to reconsider its request for membership in the United Nations. The resolution, sponsored by Arab and Palestinian representatives, was endorsed by the 193-member world body with a vote of 143-9, with 25 abstentions.
On April 18, the United States blocked a council resolution that enjoyed broad support, which wanted to facilitate Palestine's full membership in the United Nations—a goal long pursued by Palestinians but opposed by Israel.
Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood stated unequivocally on Thursday that the Biden administration was against the assembly resolution. The United States, along with Israel, was among the nine countries that voted against it.

“We’ve been very clear from the beginning there is a process for obtaining full membership in the United Nations, and this effort by some of the Arab countries and the Palestinians is to try to go around that,” Wood said Thursday.

“We have said from the beginning the best way to ensure Palestinian full membership in the U.N. is to do that through negotiations with Israel. That remains our position,” he added.
What does the resolution state?
The resolution now states that Palestine meets the qualifications for membership without the previous requirement of being deemed "a peace-loving state" by the General Assembly. It suggests that the Security Council should reconsider Palestine's request for membership in a positive light.
The renewed effort for full Palestinian UNmembership coincides with the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly highlighted by the recent hostilities in Gaza. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza, along with the reported death toll of over 34,000 people by Gaza health officials, has sparked widespread condemnation in various council and assembly gatherings.
