International Yoga Day, established a decade ago by the United Nations on June 21, focuses on raising awareness about the myriad health benefits of the ancient Indian practice of yoga.
The word “yoga” comes from Sanskrit, meaning to join or unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness.
The theme of the 10th International Yoga Day this year is “Yoga for self and society,” emphasising yoga's role in fostering individual well-being and societal harmony.
The practice offers profound benefits for both individuals and society.
On a personal level, yoga enhances physical health through improved flexibility, strength and balance, while also promoting mental well-being by reducing stress, anxiety and depression.
International Yoga Day is observed on June 21, coinciding with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
The special date is considered auspicious in yoga traditions and holds significance in many parts of the world.
In Indian tradition, it symbolises the significance of light and the transition to Dakshinayana, a Hindu astronomical concept which refers to the movement of the Sun to the south of the equator.
The 2024 theme, "Yoga for Self and Society," underscores the interconnectedness of individual and collective health and highlights how yoga not only enhances personal health but also contributes to social well-being.
