Delhi weather update

Heatwave conditions are expected to continue in Delhi in the next 24 hours but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has assured the situation will start easing starting Thursday (Jun 20). The IMD said Delhi and the adjoining areas may get temporary relief within the next 48 hours, thanks to the ongoing western disturbance in northwest India. North India may witness a change in the wind pattern, paving the way for pre-monsoon activities in the region.

Monsoon winds to gather speed

Meanwhile, monsoon winds are expected to gather speed and potency in the coming days as rains have already started in Madhya Pradesh and the Vidarbha region.

Bay of Bengal Monsoon is expected to become stronger after a comparatively weaker phase, which may bring showers to West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Eastern Uttar Pradesh in the coming days ahead of full-fledged monsoon.

On the other hand, the Arabian Sea front of the Monsoon is also expected to gain speed next week. IMD has predicted rainfall in Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtraand Gujarat states.

Major IMD forecast today

Maximum temperature in Northern India hovered around 44C to 46C, 5 to 8C above normal levels. Meanwhile, the highest temperature was recorded in Prayagraj, East Uttar Pradesh at 47.6C.

Uttar Pradesh is likely to witness a severe heatwave on June 19 and 20.

Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will also face heatwave conditions on June 19. However, a relief is likely starting Thursday.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam & Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh till June 21.

Delhi's warmest night in 12 years

Meanwhile, Delhi recorded its warmest night in 12 years on Wednesday as the mercury hit 34 degrees Celsius, a whopping 8C above the normal level.

According to a Times of India report, the ongoing heatwave has claimed five lives so far in the national capital amid the ongoing water and power crisis.
