Houthis strike cargo carrier in the Gulf of Aden with cruise missiles

The US military said that two cruise missiles launched by Yemen's Iranian-backed Houthi rebels struck a bulk cargo carrier in the Gulf of Aden on Thursday. The strike severely injured a sailor who was evacuated by American forces in an aircraft from the USS Philippine Sea (CG 58).
In a statement, the US Central Command said that the M/V Verbena, a Palauan-flagged, Ukrainian-owned, Polish-operated ship, "reported damage and subsequent fires on board. The crew continues to fight the fire. One civilian mariner was severely injured during the attack". The cargo carrier had docked in Malaysia and was on its way to Italy carrying wood.

"Aircraft from USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) medically evacuated the injured mariner to a partner force ship nearby for medical attention," CENTCOM said adding that "this continued reckless behavior by the Iranian-backed Huthis threatens regional stability and endangers the lives of mariners across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden".
This attack is the latest such assault in the Houthis' campaign over the Israel-Hamas war. They have said that they attack vessels in solidarity with Palestinians. The Houthis have been targeting vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 2023.

CENTCOM said that the Houthis are targeting and threatening the lives of third-country nationals who have nothing to do with the conflict in Gaza.
The ongoing threat is a major hurdle for the authorities to safely assist vessels in the region and theHouthis are making it harder to deliver critical assistance to the people of Yemen as well as to Gaza, CENTCOM added.

Ship bound to India damaged recently
The latest attack comes a day after a Greek-owned cargo ship, which was reportedly travelling to India, was struck by a small craft off Yemen's Red Sea port of Hodeidah, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Wednesday (Jun 12).
UKMTO, which is run by Britain's Royal Navy, said in an official release that itreceived a report of an incident 66NM southwest of Al Hudaydah, Yemen.
News agency Reuters reported that a Greek shipping ministry source, confirmedthe incident and said that the vessel was also attacked from the air. The source also revealed that the ship was sailing to India when it was hit.
The official on condition of anonymity told the news agency "it was hit twice by air and by sea. There are no reports of injuries".
