Need for rules for AI development, says French PM Macron at AI Summit

French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday (Feb 11) stressed the need for rules to govern artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at a summit in Paris, he said, "We need these rules for AI to move forward." His remarks appeared to challenge US Vice President JD Vance, who had earlier criticised excessive regulation.

US warns against over-regulation

Meanwhile US Vice President JD Vance cautioned that excessive regulation could harm the transformative sector. He said, "Excessive regulation of the AI sector could kill a transformative sector just as it's taking off.Speaking at the same event, he warned against tightening government control.

EU announces AI investment

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen revealed a plan to mobilise 200 billion euros for AI in Europe. The European Commission president said, "We aim to mobilise a total of 200 billion euros for AI investments in Europe." The EU will contribute 50 billion euros, with the rest coming from investors and industry.

AI race still open

Von der Leyen stated that "the AI race is far from over." The EU plans to finance four AI gigafactories with 20 billion euros to support AI model development
