Chinese man violently kills dog by throwing it on the ground after pet chases his granddaughter

In a shocking incident, a Chinese man killed a pet dog by throwing it violently on the ground after the unleashed animal chased his granddaughter.

The incident was reported in an online post on September 4 and created an intense debate on social media platforms.

As per the post, a young woman had taken her pet dog on a walk in the Zhejiang residential area and had not kept it leashed.

The dog started chasing a girl who was playing with other children nearby. In order to save his granddaughter, the man picked up the pet dog and threw it on the ground, because of which it died.

In the viral video, the owner of the dog is seen crouching close to her dead pet and saying, “You killed my dog! Come over here.”

Meanwhile, two onlookers are heard saying, “Your dog was chasing all of these kids, scaring them. The kids were being chased from one side of the neighbourhood to the other. Look how scared they are!”

Shouting back, the owner said, “But it didn’t bite her!”

An onlooker, while speaking to mainland outlet Dianshi News, said that the owner thought the dog was just playing with the children and hence, she did not intervene.

“She said the dog would not hurt anyone, and that it was just playing around,” said the onlooker. Later, the dog owner reported the incident.

Will the man face legal issues for killing the dog?

Issuing a statement, Xintang Subdistrict Office said that they are investigating the matter seriously and mediating between the involved parties.

“We will strengthen awareness of responsible dog ownership and improve neighbourhood relations,” the statement added.

According to China's law, dog owners should use a collar and leash in public, although adherence varies because some owners believe that leashes restrict their pets.

Speaking to Jiupai News, Fade Dongheng Law Firm in Jiangsu province in eastern China senior partner Lan Tianbin said that the grandfather should not face any legal repercussions because his actions will be seen as a “necessary act” to protect the child.

“When a dog bites a person, killing or injuring the dog to save someone is considered a necessary act. In this case, the dog owner didn’t have the dog on a leash, and when the dog chased the child, the grandfather acted to protect the child by killing the dog, which could also be deemed necessary,” Lan added.

“I can’t imagine the psychological impact on his grandchild after he killed an animal right in front of her," wrote a user.
