Who is Pragya Misra—OpenAI’s first hire from India?

ChatGPT’s parent company OpenAI has hired for the first time from India. The company has hired 39-year-old Pragya Misra as the government relations head as India goes into marathon polls starting April 19. The move comes amid concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on elections.

The hiring highlights “the generative-AI company’s efforts to push for favourable rules as governments around the world consider how to regulate the rapidly developing technology,” a Bloomberg report noted.

The report added that OpenAI has not made the appointment public yet.

Here is all you need to know about Pragya Misra.

1. Before her appointment at OpenAI, Misra served as the Director of Public Affairs at Truecaller, a smartphone application that has features of caller ID, call-blocking, flash-messaging, call-recording chat and voice by using the Internet.
   
2. Earlier, Misra was hired by Whatsapp in July 2018 as the company’s first hire in India. She was appointed as a communication manager.
   
3. Misra has also worked at the Royal Danish Embassy for around four years. Her role there involved working to increase trade from Danish private and/or public enterprises to India and South Asia.
   
4. Back in 2013, she also worked at Ernst & Young as an assistant manager.
   
5. Pragya Misra also used to host a podcast called “PRAGYAN.” She invites guests and touches upon an array of topics including meditation and consciousness. According to her Instagram bio, Misra is a Heartfulness Meditation Trainer.
   
6. Misra completed her Bachelor's of Commerce from Delhi University. She also earned a diploma in Bargaining and Negotiations from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She has done her MBA from the International Management Institute.
   
7. Misra is also an expert golfer and has been ranked among the top three amateur golfers in India.
   
8. OpenAI is focusing on the Indian tech market, as India ranks second in ChatGPT usage, following the United States. India, being the most populous nation globally, presents a significant growth opportunity for international technology companies.
