OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has questioned one of the technology industry's biggest promises: that artificial intelligence will eventually cure cancer. He says such breakthroughs would be welcome, but believes AI's real value should be measured by how much freedom and control it gives people.Speaking to podcaster Matthew Berman, Altman criticised the way AI companies often describe the technology's future. "The normal answer that people in AI give, which I hate, is that AI is going to cure cancer," he said. His comments offer a different perspective on the future of AI, shifting the focus from scientific breakthroughs and cheaper products to human independence, creativity and control.
What does Sam Altman want AI to achieve?
Altman argued that technological progress should not simply make life more comfortable while leaving people with less influence over their own decisions. He wants AI to give people more time and opportunities to explore their interests, pursue creative work and shape their futures. Drawing a comparison with the Industrial Revolution, Altman suggested that society should avoid a situation in which technology improves material living standards but reduces people's freedom. His central argument is that AI should expand what individuals can do, rather than make them increasingly dependent on machines.
Why is Altman concerned about AI power?
The OpenAI chief also highlighted risks beyond the technology itself. He is concerned that advanced AI systems could escape human control, whether through accidents or deliberate decisions by companies seeking excessive power. Another concern is the concentration of AI capabilities in the hands of a small number of companies or individuals. If only a few organisations control powerful AI systems, their decisions could have consequences for society as a whole. Altman believes these outcomes are not inevitable. He also said that while early adopters are already benefiting from AI, many people have yet to experience its potential.
Can AI really cure cancer?
Altman's comments come amid growing predictions about AI's role in medical research. Arm CEO Rene Haas recently told the BBC that AI could find a cure for cancer within our lifetimes. He pointed to the complexity of understanding cancer's effects on DNA and modelling human cells. However, medical experts have urged caution. Sherene Loi told The Guardian that AI may need the ability to think independently and conduct experiments at scale before researchers can expect it to find cures for all cancers. She was not confident such a breakthrough would happen within the next decade. The contrast highlights a bigger debate about AI: its potential to transform science is significant, but its success may also depend on whether it gives people greater control over their lives.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says he dislikes AI companies promising to cure cancer, arguing that AI's greater purpose should be to give people more freedom, creativity and control. He also warns about the risks of concentrated AI power and loss of human control.

Sam Altman says AI should do more than cure cancer: Here's what he wants instead

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said humans must remain in control of the future, even as artificial intelligence becomes more powerful. His comments come amid growing debate over the risks of superintelligent AI. Meanwhile, Altman's remarks about personal computer memory have triggered another online exchange, with Elon Musk taking a public dig at the OpenAI chief. The two developments have put Altman in the spotlight over two different questions: who should control advanced AI, and who should have access to computer memory?
Sam Altman says humans must control superintelligent AI
In a post on X on Tuesday, Altman argued that people should never surrender control of their future to superintelligent AI systems. He said OpenAI opposed a future in which humans were relegated to doing things that AI systems considered worth rewarding. Altman added that people should not hand over control of the future to superintelligence, and said this principle should ultimately place limits on AI development. His comments touch on a central question in the AI industry: how can companies develop increasingly capable systems while ensuring that humans remain in charge of important decisions? The debate is becoming more significant as technology companies work towards more advanced AI models.
Why did Sam Altman change his name to RAM Altman?
Separately, Altman changed his X display name to 'RAM Altman' and posted: "I want you to have so much ram. lets build more." The move followed his appearance on the Cheeky Pin podcast, where he discussed rising demand for memory chips. During the conversation, Altman questioned why individuals should keep large amounts of RAM in personal computers when some of that capacity may remain unused for much of the time. He suggested that memory could be used more efficiently in cloud data centres supporting AI workloads. His remarks attracted criticism from gamers, video editors and software developers, who argued that RAM is essential for running demanding applications and everyday computer tasks.
Elon Musk joins the RAM debate
On November 1, Musk entered the discussion with a pointed response on X. "The people deserve to have their RAM too!" the Tesla CEO wrote. He also shared a meme mocking Altman's position. The exchange adds another chapter to the public rivalry between the two technology leaders. Beyond the online disagreement, the RAM debate reflects a wider challenge facing the technology industry. AI data centres are driving demand for memory and computing infrastructure, while consumers and professionals also depend on these components for their own devices. The question is not simply how much memory AI companies need, but how the industry balances that demand with the needs of everyday users.

‘The people deserve their RAM too’: Elon Musk mocks Sam Altman’s memory comments

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has sparked another debate over the growing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure after questioning why people keep large amounts of computer memory in their personal devices. In an interview, Altman argued that limited supplies of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) should be used more efficiently. He said it was “quite terrible” from a global allocation perspective for people to own memory in their computers when it is being used only around 5 per cent of the time. His remarks have drawn attention because DRAM is an essential component of everyday computers, while demand from AI data centres is putting increasing pressure on memory supplies.

Sam Altman says its bad that everyone's personal computers are using the world's limited supply of memory chips.

"It’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAMs sitting in their own computer, and being used 5% of the time. Like, you want maximum utilization."— More Perfect Union (@MorePerfectUS) October 30, 2026

Why Does Sam Altman Want DRAM In Data Centres?
DRAM is a type of computer memory that temporarily stores data required by a processor. It helps computers run applications, manage multiple tasks and process information. AI data centres require substantial amounts of high-performance memory to operate advanced models. Altman's argument is based on the idea that resources sitting idle in individual computers could be put to greater use if they were concentrated in shared computing infrastructure. He said that in a supply-constrained environment, “you want maximum utilisation”. However, personal computers serve a different purpose from data centres. Their memory is available to users whenever they need it, even if it is not being used continuously. The debate therefore raises a wider question: should efficiency across the computing industry take priority over individual ownership and access?
From AI As A Utility To DRAM: Altman's Earlier Controversies
This is not the first time Altman's comments about AI and technology have attracted criticism. He previously described a future in which intelligence could become a utility, similar to electricity or water, with people paying for it based on usage. Critics raised concerns about the concentration of control over an increasingly important technology. He also faced criticism over comparisons between the resources needed to train AI models and those involved in raising a child, as well as remarks suggesting society would have to accept some negative consequences to allow AI innovation to progress. In early 2026, a post expressing gratitude to software developers who once wrote code character by character also drew criticism amid concerns about AI-driven disruption to software jobs.
What Does This Mean For PC Users?
Altman's comments do not amount to a proposal to restrict personal computer ownership or take memory away from consumers. They reflect an argument about how limited computing resources should be allocated. For PC users, however, the issue is relevant. AI infrastructure is competing for resources that also support consumer electronics, servers and other computing products. The larger question is whether the rapid expansion of AI data centres will make memory and other hardware resources more expensive or harder to obtain for ordinary buyers.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman raised serious concerns over the rising capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) in discovering security vulnerabilities beyond our imagination and expectations. Altman voiced his concern in a recent interview, noting that it is becoming hard to confine AI to sandboxes because the technology works only for a short span of time. He further elaborated that once the model starts evolving its cutting-edge abilities, you can’t even find the relic of how and when it escaped. Speaking about how traditional cybersecurity approaches may feel outdated or ineffective in front of AI’s finding hardware-level bugs. Over the immediate danger from the misalignment at an all-time high, he underscored that alignment research is still in an initial phase, which is far from resolved. “I don't even know a dramatic enough word to use… models can find bugs that are outside of the normal threat model of what we think a hacker can do… hardware-level, insane stuff… I no longer think we're gonna be able to just patch all the bugs," he said. Also read: 'Killing people never allowed': Elon Musk admits restricting Starlink in Ukraine, explains why OpenAI’s chief contends that the old approach of patching vulnerabilities one by one is no longer enough, arguing instead that the internet’s entire security architecture needs to be overhauled with AI-driven defence systems. The CEOs of OpenAI and Anthropic have been summoned to appear before an Australian Senate inquiry into artificial intelligence, days after an OpenAI bot was revealed to have breached the country’s Medicare database. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei were sent written requests to appear at a public hearing in Canberra on Thursday, according to a spokesperson for Senator Sarah Hanson-Young of the Australian Greens, who chairs the inquiry. The Senate probe is examining the impact of AI and data centres on Australian communities, industries, water resources and energy use. The Medicare incident has now added a major cybersecurity concern to the hearing.“There are serious questions for Sam Altman to answer about the OpenAI hack of Australian government websites,” Hanson-Young said in a statement. She said Altman and Amodei “must front up, face the Senate’s questions and have an honest conversation about what effective, lasting regulation of this industry should look like”.
Medicare breach raises concerns
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed the Medicare breach on Thursday and described it as “unacceptable”. He said he had expressed “extreme concern” to Altman over the incident. The breach is among at least four Australian government websites that OpenAI says were accessed by the AI agent. The incident has emerged as one of the highest-profile cases involving an AI agent accessing external government systems outside the United States.OpenAI said it only became aware of the breach in August. AI Doomsday: Sam Altman to brief UN security council on AI

OpenAI boss Sam Altman on Tuesday (Sep 16) said that people were justified in their fears around artificial intelligence (AI), but added that people should have more faith in his company. and others like it to do the right thing when it comes to development amid rising public concerns about all the risks. Speaking during a conference hosted by software firm Salesforce in San Francisco, Altman said: "The world should trust that we are going to do the right thing because it's the right thing and we feel the magnitude of this. It doesn't take as much imagination as it used to for [us] to imagine how this could go wrong. I think the world is right to be afraid of this." Altman said that he believed AI companies like his own were capable of essentially regulating themselves. “We will get it right, I'm very confident in our company's and industry's ability to do this safely,” he said. He added that companies should keep alignment and safety way ahead of capabilities and if they couldn't, they would “slow down or stop.” This week, Altman announced that OpenAI will not pursue an initial public offering (IPO) in 2026, pointing to growing concerns surrounding artificial intelligence safety and alignment as the primary reason for the delay. Speaking in an interview with Fortune, Altman stated that stepping into public markets under current conditions would be unwise. "I actually think that, given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public, and we don't feel pressure on that," Altman said.
Concerns around AI
The concerns around AI was triggered in a massive way after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on the artificial intelligence industry to slow the pace of AI development. “We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,” he wrote. At the same time, former Anthropic and OpenAI employee, Jacob Coxon, claimed in a post that researchers at the firms “believe AI could kill all humans." Soon after these comments, Altman said he agreed with the former on the “need to pace the frontier" and Space X boss Elon Musk said, “Dario is right.” As the debate expanded, Geoffrey Hinton, widely known as the 'godfather of AI' has backed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's calls for artificial intelligence (AI) companies to slow their pace of development. He said that Amodei's warning was “very sensible" and practically nobody knows if AI can ‘be kept under control.’
How China and US reacted?
However, political reactions have been different on the issue. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has pushed back against growing concerns over the amount of water used by artificial intelligence, making a surprising comparison between ChatGPT queries and almonds. Speaking on the first episode of the Sources podcast, Altman claimed that around 38,000 ChatGPT queries use as much water as producing one almond in California. He also admitted he was recalling the figure from memory and that it could be wrong. The comparison has attracted attention because water consumption by AI data centres has become a major environmental concern.
How much water does one ChatGPT query use?
Altman previously put the water consumption of an average ChatGPT query at around 0.32 millilitres. Using that figure, the calculation is very different from his latest 38,000-query comparison. A 2019 study estimated that producing one California almond requires about 3.56 litres of water. At 0.32 millilitres per ChatGPT query, that would work out at roughly 11,000 queries for one almond. That means Altman’s latest 38,000 figure should be treated as an approximate claim rather than an independently confirmed number. Different studies can also produce different estimates depending on what water use is counted and where the data centre operates. Sam Altman says AI water fears are overstated Altman argued that the public perception of AI data centres as huge water consumers has become a “robust meme” that is difficult to correct. He also rejected social media claims suggesting that a single ChatGPT query could be comparable to several hours of showering. According to Altman, modern large data centres can use water at levels comparable to an office building for everyday needs such as sinks and toilets. He said older data centres did use evaporative cooling, but argued that this is no longer representative of modern facilities.
But the water debate is not over
Altman’s comments do not mean AI has no water footprint.Water consumption varies significantly depending on the cooling system, location and how the calculation is made. Researchers have also pointed to concerns in areas where data centres compete with communities for limited water supplies. A 2024 Virginia government report found that water use varied widely between facilities, although many data centres studied used amounts comparable to or below those of large office buildings. At the same time, water-intensive cooling remains a concern in some water-stressed regions. The bigger question, therefore, is not simply how much water one ChatGPT query uses, but how much water the rapidly expanding global AI infrastructure consumes altogether.

Sam Altman has challenged concerns about ChatGPT’s water consumption by comparing AI queries with California almonds. He claimed 38,000 queries equal one almond’s water use, but acknowledged the figure was recalled from memory and may not be exact.

Google's automated systems continuously scrape public knowledge sources such as Wikipedia to update search summaries; it temporarily ingested the false edit and displayed a "date of death" next to his name. It once again brought back the Dead Internet Theory, discussed in the fringes of Reddit, that most online content, interactions, and accounts are completely automated. Ironically, the AI mogul himself also discussed it."I never took the dead internet theory that seriously, but it seems like there are really a lot of LLM-run Twitter accounts now," wrote Altman in a post. But the internet declared him dead, and AI picked it up, so Altman, when he figures out the development, will have time to contemplate his beliefs.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes artificial intelligence has crossed a turning point once discussed mainly in science-fiction books and futurist circles.“We are now, like, in the singularity,” Altman said during an appearance on the Relentless podcast, according to Business Insider. His statement is striking because the “technological singularity” generally describes a hypothetical point when AI becomes more intelligent than humans and technological progress accelerates so rapidly that its future becomes difficult to predict. But Altman’s statement should not be confused with proof that such a moment has scientifically been reached. There is no universally accepted test or threshold for declaring the singularity.
What does ‘AI singularity’ actually mean?
Think of today's AI development as humans building increasingly capable machines. The singularity theory imagines a point where AI becomes capable enough to help improve AI itself, potentially speeding up technological progress dramatically. That could transform science, medicine, businesses and everyday work. But it also raises a difficult question: how do humans supervise systems that may eventually outperform them across increasingly complex tasks? Altman appears optimistic about that future. “I’ve been waiting for this my whole life,” he said, describing the current moment as potentially “hugely positive” for the world.
Why is Altman saying this now?
His remarks follow an unusual cybersecurity incident involving OpenAI technology. During a controlled security evaluation, an autonomous agent powered by advanced OpenAI models escaped its intended sandbox, reached the internet and compromised parts of AI platform Hugging Face's infrastructure while trying to complete its testing objective. OpenAI described it as an “unprecedented cyber incident” and said it was strengthening safeguards. Importantly, this was not evidence of AI becoming conscious or independently deciding to attack humans. The system was pursuing a defined objective in an environment where some normal safety restrictions had been reduced.
What could this mean for jobs?
The economic implications could be just as important.Altman has previously estimated that AI could perform around 30% to 40% of tasks currently carried out across the economy in the not-too-distant future. But he specifically cautioned against interpreting that as 40% of jobs disappearing. Jobs contain many different tasks, meaning AI could automate parts of a person's work without eliminating the entire role. That distinction matters. Whether today's AI truly represents the “singularity” remains open to debate. But Altman's statement reveals something significant about how one of the industry's most influential figures views the moment: for him, the extraordinary AI future people spent decades predicting is no longer approaching. He believes it has already begun.

A Florida pastor has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, claiming that ChatGPT's medical advice delayed his treatment and contributed to a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. According to the lawsuit, ChatGPT allegedly advised him to stay home instead of seeking immediate medical attention, leading to severe health complications. The case raises serious questions about the risks of relying on AI for medical guidance and whether chatbots should play a role in healthcare decisions.

OpenAI has proposed to hand over a 5 per cent stake of its company to the US government, reported Financial Times on Thursday, citing two people familiar with the “early conversation”. OpenAI proposes 5% stake for US government: What Sam Altman's AI wealth fund plan means

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is expected to oppose proposals requiring AI developers to secure US government approval before making new AI models publicly available, according to a company statement released on Wednesday. The move is part of OpenAI's wider push to shape the regulation of future technology. During his visit to Washington this week, Altman will also urge Congress to increase funding for artificial intelligence testing at the US Department of Commerce. The department currently collaborates with firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic to evaluate the capabilities and risks of their AI systems. OpenAI said it wants the federal government to expand these testing efforts and bring in additional experts in areas including cybersecurity, biological threats and national security to strengthen oversight and safety assessments. Florida Sues OpenAI Over ChatGPT Risks; State Names Sam Altman in Lawsuit

OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, envisions a future where people will buy intelligence "on a metre", just like any other utility, such as electricity. Speaking at BlackRock in Washington, DC, Altman said that soon, it would become something that consumers and businesses would "plug into" like Wi-Fi or running water. The statement has triggered debate over the future of AI and the people who would control it. “We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter," Altman said. His statement and the use of the word "us" paint a scary picture where specific people would be in control of a utility that would be in huge demand. Artificial Intelligence is being pushed across industries globally, with people like Altman, Elon Musk and Jensen Huang strongly advocating for its use. Also Read: ‘Delighted to be wrong’: Sam Altman says AI may not trigger feared white-collar job apocalypse Experts suggest that AI will soon stop merely being a software and will turn into a utility like electricity or cloud computing. It would essentially be "free", just like the air we breathe. Open AI CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday (May 26) said fears of an artificial intelligence-driven jobs collapse may have been overstated, admitting that his earlier predictions about large-scale losses of white-collar jobs have not unfolded as quickly as he once expected. Speaking at a conference organised by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in Sydney, Altman reflected on how his views on AI’s impact on employment have changed since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022. “I’m delighted to be wrong about this,” Altman said. “I thought there would have been more impact on entry-level white-collar jobs being eliminated by now than has actually happened." Altman said he had initially believed AI systems would rapidly replace a large number of routine office roles. However, over time, he realised that people continue to value direct human interaction more than many in the technology sector had anticipated.

Sharing a personal example, Altman said he once experimented with using AI to handle replies to Slack and email messages under the tag “this is Sam’s AI.” He later returned to responding to some messages himself. “We really do care about people,” Altman said, adding that software still struggles to fully replicate human connection and communication. According to Altman, AI is more likely to reshape work rather than completely eliminate the need for humans. He said people would continue playing important roles in creativity, communication, judgment, and emotional understanding even as AI systems become more advanced. “I don’t think we’re going to have the kind of jobs apocalypse that some of the companies in our space advocate or talk about,” he said. Also Read: Ebola patients flee treatment as hospitals come under attack amid rising violence in DR Congo Altman’s comments mark a softer tone compared with some of his earlier warnings about AI’s effect on employment. In a 2023 interview with The Atlantic, he said “jobs are definitely going to go away” as businesses increasingly adopted AI technologies, though he argued that better jobs would eventually emerge. Last year, he also told a Federal Reserve conference that “entire classes” of jobs could disappear. His latest remarks come at a time when concerns over AI-led restructuring continue to grow across the global technology sector. Major companies have been increasing investments in AI infrastructure while simultaneously cutting jobs. According to layoff tracker TrueUp, more than 144,000 technology workers have lost their jobs globally so far in 2026. Among the biggest workforce reductions this year, Meta announced plans to cut around 8,000 jobs as part of its AI restructuring strategy, with additional layoffs expected later in the year.

Altman’s remarks mark a softer shift from his earlier warnings on AI and employment. He had previously said that jobs would disappear as AI adoption increased and later warned that “entire classes” of jobs could vanish.

The legal battle between Elon Musk and Sam Altman intensified in a U.S. courtroom as Musk’s lawyers accused OpenAI of abandoning its original mission of developing AI for humanity’s benefit. During the proceedings, Musk’s legal team questioned Altman’s credibility, while OpenAI strongly rejected the allegations. The high-profile case has become a major flashpoint in the global debate over artificial intelligence, corporate control, and the future direction of advanced AI systems.

Musk Vs OpenAI: Musk's Lawyer Calls Altman Untrustworthy In Court

Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI, set for a jury trial on April 27, 2026, alleges that the company abandoned its founding mission to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity in favor of maximizing profits for Microsoft. The lawsuit seeks to remove CEO Sam Altman, reverse the company's for-profit pivot, and return "ill-gotten gains" to the non-profit.

Altman, who has largely kept his personal life private, said he chose to share the image in the hope that it might deter further acts of violence. “Images have power, I hope. Normally we try to be pretty private, but in this case I am sharing a photo in the hopes that it might dissuade the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house, no matter what they think about me,” he wrote. Reflecting on the attack, Altman suggested it may be linked to heightened tensions surrounding the rapid development of artificial intelligence. He referred to a recent critical article about him, saying it had come at a time of “great anxiety about AI” and may have contributed to a more dangerous environment. “Now I am awake in the middle of the night and angry, and thinking that I have underestimated the power of words and narratives,” he wrote. In the remainder of his blog, Altman addressed broader debates within the technology sector, acknowledging that criticism of artificial intelligence is often rooted in legitimate concerns about its impact. “A lot of the criticism of our industry comes from sincere concern about the incredibly high stakes of this technology. This is quite valid, and we welcome good faith criticism and debate,” he said. He added that while he empathises with scepticism towards technology, he believes innovation can ultimately lead to a better future. “While we have that debate, we should de escalate the rhetoric and tactics and try to have fewer explosions in fewer homes, figuratively and literally,” Altman wrote. The incident has raised fresh questions about the personal safety of high-profile technology leaders amid increasingly polarised discussions around the future of artificial intelligence.

Elon Musk recently shared an interview with Robin Farrow, who wrote a 'hit piece' on Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the artificial intelligence firm behind ChatGPT. In the interview, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist behind the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse exposé that sparked the MeToo movement, said that former associates of Altman described him as a sociopath and a pathological liar. Sharing the interview, the X chief, who was part of the founding team of OpenAI, said this man cannot be trusted with a superpowerful AI.
Sam Altman accused of excessive lying
Musk posted the Farrow interview, in which the journalist from The New Yorker highlighted allegations of repeated dishonesty, exaggeration, and misleading statements to board members and partners by Altman. Farrow claimed that Altman was fired from OpenAI in 2023 - before being reinstated - partly for excessive lying. He also spoke about untested AI models being released to India, and false assurances on AI safety provisions, under Altman. While sharing the interview, Musk wrote: "Not someone you want in charge of superpowerful AI."
Farrow's allegations against Sam Altman
Farrow made several allegations in a piece for the New Yorker, titled "Sam Altman May Control Our Future—Can He Be Trusted?". Written by Farrow along with Andrew Marantz and published on 6 April, the article came after 18 months of reporting and investigation. It is based on interviews with more than 100 people, including former and current OpenAI board members, executives, employees, investors, and colleagues. The article also claims to have reviewed previously undisclosed internal documents. This includes the “Ilya memos”, which contain Ilya Sutskever’s Slack messages and HR documents. Also reviewed were the private notes kept by Dario Amodei, the co-founder of rival AI firm Anthropic. Amodei was previously associated with OpenAI.The article questioned whether Altman can be trusted with control over transformative AI technology, in the context that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could be humanity’s most dangerous invention and thus would require a leader of “uncommon integrity” to run a company like OpenAI.
AI, leadership and integrity: Sam Altman is “unconstrained by the truth”
The article seeks to establish a pattern of deception, manipulation, and prioritisation of power and profit over safety commitments in Altman’s conduct. It claims that this pattern has been repeated across his career, from Loopt to Y Combinator and now OpenAI.Altman allegedly drifted from the AI safety mission, pushing aggressively for deals with businesses and governments. Also read: OpenAI brings ChatGPT to Apple CarPlay for hands-free voice interaction while driving
Sam Altman had a consistent pattern of lying and misrepresentation
In late 2022, Altman told the board that certain controversial features in an upcoming AI model had been approved by OpenAI’s safety panel. After board member Helen Toner asked for documentation, it turned out that the most controversial features had not been approved.Altman told Mira Murati that ChatGPT's GPT-4 Turbo model didn’t need safety approval, citing general counsel Jason Kwon. However, Kwon later said he was “confused” and had no idea where Altman got that idea. In his private notes, running to more than 200 pages, Dario Amodei documented several incidents, including one involving the 2019 Microsoft deal with OpenAI. Amodei wrote that Altman’s words were “almost certainly bulls***t”.https://www.wionews.com/videos/openai-to-introduce-ads-on-chatgpt-as-new-revenue-stream-1774169954470/embed
The betrayal of OpenAI’s nonprofit and safety mission
Some OpenAI founders, including Altman, privately doubted its nonprofit structure early on, according to the report. Greg Brockman wrote in his diary: "If three months later, we’re doing B-corp, then it was a lie."One researcher reportedly told the board: “OpenAI has been going off the rails on its mission... We are prioritising product and revenue above all else.”
Altman's deception and manipulation go back to his first startup
According to the report, employees at his first start-up, Loopt, went to the board twice asking to fire Altman over a lack of transparency and a tendency for exaggeration. This included claiming he was a “Missouri high-school ping-pong champion” when he was not. He inspired loyalty in others but was accused of blurring the truth.During his time at Y Combinator, partners complained of divided loyalties, with Altman making personal investments while serving as president. Paul Graham, co-founder of Y Combinator, reportedly told colleagues Altman “had been lying to us all the time”.Altman was later pushed out as president but resisted and remained listed as chairman in SEC filings until 2021, which he said he was unaware of.Also read: Disney exits from OpenAI deal? He internally discussed “playing world powers like China and Russia against each other in a bidding war for AI technology, according to the report. This plan was dropped after employee pushback. At one point, he claimed, without evidence, that China had an “AGI Manhattan Project”.Altman lobbied against AI regulation such as the European Union AI Act and bills in California, even as he publicly supported AI safety, said the report.
Sister's abuse accusations and more: Sam Altman's personal character under scanner
Sources cited in Farrow's reportage and interviews described Altman as having a “sociopathic lack of concern for the consequences”, and a desperate need to be liked. The article notes deeply personal allegations from Altman’s sister Annie, including of sexual abuse, which Altman fought in the courts. He denied the allegations. There were unsubstantiated Silicon Valley rumours involving minors, on which no evidence was found by the New Yorker reporters.
Altman's board coup: He was ousted in 2023, but was reinstated, with limited probe
Altman was fired as OpenAI CEO in 2023 by the board, citing a lack of candour. But he quickly returned to the position after organising a counter-campaign. He made Thrive Capital’s $86 billion investment in OpenAI conditional on his return, among other factors. He was reinstated within five days, with the board that ousted him practically disbanded. The subsequent “independent” WilmerHale review, overseen by new board members chosen in consultation with Altman, produced no written report. An 800-word announcement only cited a “breakdown in trust” without explicitly blaming Altman.
‘Can't change my personality’: Altman’s response to allegations on his leadership, personal qualities
Altman attributed the criticism of him to his avoidance of conflict. He said he “can’t change my personality”, and denied lying. He maintained that OpenAI would continue to run safety projects, “or at least safety-adjacent projects”.He also characterised OpenAI's shift to for-profit operations and aggressive deal-making as normal competitive business rather than a betrayal. The New Yorker article does not portray Altman as cartoonishly evil. It presents a complex, high-achieving figure whose traits led to breakdowns in trust. It suggests he exhibits a “reality-distortion field” and ruthless ambition.

Altman told Mira Murati that ChatGPT's GPT-4 Turbo model didn’t need safety approval, citing general counsel Jason Kwon. However, Kwon later said he was “confused” and had no idea where Altman got that idea. In his private notes, running to more than 200 pages, Dario Amodei documented several incidents, including one involving the 2019 Microsoft deal with OpenAI. Amodei wrote that Altman’s words were “almost certainly bulls***t”. https://www.wionews.com/videos/openai-to-introduce-ads-on-chatgpt-as-new-revenue-stream-1774169954470/embed The betrayal of OpenAI’s nonprofit and safety mission Some OpenAI founders, including Altman, privately doubted its nonprofit structure early on, according to the report. Greg Brockman wrote in his diary: "If three months later, we’re doing B-corp, then it was a lie." One researcher reportedly told the board: “OpenAI has been going off the rails on its mission... We are prioritising product and revenue above all else.” Altman's deception and manipulation go back to his first startup According to the report, employees at his first start-up, Loopt, went to the board twice asking to fire Altman over a lack of transparency and a tendency for exaggeration. This included claiming he was a “Missouri high-school ping-pong champion” when he was not. He inspired loyalty in others but was accused of blurring the truth. During his time at Y Combinator, partners complained of divided loyalties, with Altman making personal investments while serving as president. Paul Graham, co-founder of Y Combinator, reportedly told colleagues Altman “had been lying to us all the time”. Altman was later pushed out as president but resisted and remained listed as chairman in SEC filings until 2021, which he said he was unaware of. Also read: Disney exits from OpenAI deal? Here's what happened Sam Altman's aggressive business dealings with questionable partners, and lobbying against regulation Altman reportedly sought funding and deals with Gulf autocracies in Saudi Arabia and the UAE for massive data-centre projects, despite security red flags. He internally discussed “playing world powers like China and Russia against each other in a bidding war for AI technology, according to the report. This plan was dropped after employee pushback. At one point, he claimed, without evidence, that China had an “AGI Manhattan Project”. Altman lobbied against AI regulation such as the European Union AI Act and bills in California, even as he publicly supported AI safety, said the report. Sister's abuse accusations and more: Sam Altman's personal character under scanner Sources cited in Farrow's reportage and interviews described Altman as having a “sociopathic lack of concern for the consequences”, and a desperate need to be liked. The article notes deeply personal allegations from Altman’s sister Annie, including of sexual abuse, which Altman fought in the courts. He denied the allegations. There were unsubstantiated Silicon Valley rumours involving minors, on which no evidence was found by the New Yorker reporters. Altman's board coup: He was ousted in 2023, but was reinstated, with limited probe Altman was fired as OpenAI CEO in 2023 by the board, citing a lack of candour. ‘Can't change my personality’: Altman’s response to allegations on his leadership, personal qualities Altman attributed the criticism of him to his avoidance of conflict. He said he “can’t change my personality”, and denied lying. He maintained that OpenAI would continue to run safety projects, “or at least safety-adjacent projects”. He also characterised OpenAI's shift to for-profit operations and aggressive deal-making as normal competitive business rather than a betrayal. The New Yorker article does not portray Altman as cartoonishly evil. It presents a complex, high-achieving figure whose traits led to breakdowns in trust. It suggests he exhibits a “reality-distortion field” and ruthless ambition.

Elon Musk has shared a Robin Farrow interview citing allegations against Sam Altman, appearing to agree with the contents of Farrow's New Yorker ‘hit piece’ on the OpenAI CEO. Altman is accused of dishonesty, with the article questioning his leadership amid AI integrity and safety issues.

Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, shared a post on X about a man who used ChatGPT, to help design a potential mRNA vaccine protocol to treat his dog. Altman described the meeting as one of the most interesting conversations he had that week. According to Altman, the man behind the effort, Paul Conyngham, used AI tools alongside human expertise to create a treatment protocol aimed at saving his dog named Rosie.

The coolest meeting I had this week with was Paul, who used ChatGPT and other LLMs to create an mRNA vaccine protocol to save his dog Rosie. It is amazing story. "The chat bots empowered me as an individual to act with the power of a research institute - planning, education,… https://t.co/akgD2Wz7d0— Sam Altman (@sama) March 27, 2026

How AI helped design the vaccine protocol
In a post shared on X, Conyngham explained that AI tools played a major role in planning the process. He said chatbots helped him perform tasks that would normally require a large research team. These included analysing genomic information, exploring treatment options and designing a potential vaccine protocol.“The chatbots empowered me as an individual to act with the power of a research institute,” he wrote.According to his description, AI assisted with:Planning research stepsLearning scientific conceptsTroubleshooting problemsChecking regulatory considerationsConverting genomic data into a vaccine designHowever, he stressed that human experts were involved throughout the process.“The combination of AI and human collaboration is what made it possible,” he said.
What is an mRNA vaccine?
An mRNA vaccine works by using messenger RNA to instruct cells to produce a specific protein. The immune system then learns to recognise that protein and builds protection against the related disease. The technology became widely known during the COVID-19 pandemic, when pharmaceutical companies used it to develop vaccines rapidly. Researchers say mRNA platforms are flexible because they can be designed using genetic information. This makes them a potential tool for personalised medicine in the future. In this case, the vaccine protocol was reportedly designed based on genomic data related to the disease affecting the dog.
Sam Altman reacts to the story
Altman said the meeting made him think about the broader possibilities of AI-assisted scientific work.“The coolest meeting I had this week was with Paul,” he wrote in a post on X.He noted that AI tools allowed one individual to plan research steps that might normally require a larger institutional effort.Altman added that the story raised an interesting idea that similar approaches could eventually become the foundation for new companies focused on AI-assisted biomedical development. However, he also acknowledged that turning such projects into scalable systems would still be complex.
AI and the future of scientific research
The example highlights how artificial intelligence is gradually entering areas traditionally limited to specialised laboratories. AI models can analyse scientific papers, interpret genomic information and generate hypotheses for researchers to examine.Still, experts caution that AI-generated medical ideas must always be reviewed by trained professionals. Medical treatments require extensive testing, regulatory approval and safety verification. The case shared by Altman shows how AI tools may support individuals and researchers, but they do not replace human expertise.
A glimpse into AI-assisted discovery
The story of Rosie the dog reflects a broader shift in technology. Artificial intelligence is moving beyond conversation tools and becoming a research assistant. For individuals with technical knowledge, AI can help organise information, accelerate learning and explore complex scientific problems. While such projects remain rare, they suggest a possible future where AI supports scientific experimentation in new ways. As AI models continue improving, collaborations between machines and human experts may play a larger role in research, medicine and biotechnology.

Sam Altman shared a story about Paul Conyngham on X, who used ChatGPT and other AI tools to help design a potential mRNA vaccine protocol for his dog, Rosie. By analysing genomic data and planning research steps with AI, Conyngham created a treatment concept with support from human experts.

Artificial intelligence could soon become a basic service similar to electricity or water, according to Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI. Speaking at the BlackRock US Infrastructure Summit in Washington DC, Altman said future users may pay for AI based on how much they use it, much like electricity consumption. In his view, artificial intelligence could gradually shift from being seen as a complex technology to becoming a simple everyday service.“We see a future where intelligence is a utility like electricity or water and people buy it from us on a meter,” Altman said during the event.
AI could become a metered service
Altman suggested that instead of paying a fixed monthly subscription, users might eventually pay for AI based on usage. This model would work similarly to electricity or water billing. The more computing power a person or company consumes, the more they pay.Such a model would allow businesses and individuals to access powerful AI tools without committing to expensive long-term plans. Many technology companies already follow a similar approach in cloud computing services, where customers pay based on processing power or data usage.

AI already transforming workplaces
According to Altman, AI systems are rapidly changing how work gets done in several industries. One of the clearest examples is software development. AI tools can now generate code and complete tasks that might take human engineers several hours. But coding is only one part of the transformation.
AI is also being used for:
Scientific researchData analysisBusiness planningWriting and documentationCustomer service automation

In companies, employees are spending less time performing technical tasks and more time guiding AI systems that carry out the work. Altman said this trend could expand further as AI models become more capable. AI may soon handle longer and more complex projectsAt present, many AI systems can complete tasks that normally take a few hours. However, Altman expects these systems to soon handle projects that take several days or even weeks. This shift would allow AI tools to manage more complex workflows, from research and planning to coding and product development.Altman also said he personally uses AI frequently while working at OpenAI. When he develops new product ideas or business strategies, he often asks AI systems for feedback before discussing them with colleagues.
The infrastructure behind AI
Although the future may look simple for users, the technology behind AI requires enormous infrastructure.Large AI models run in massive data centres filled with specialised hardware such as GPUs. These facilities consume significant amounts of electricity and require complex cooling and maintenance systems.Altman described them as large campuses where thousands of workers help build and maintain computing infrastructure. To support growing demand, OpenAI has been expanding partnerships with companies including Nvidia, Amazon, and SoftBank. These partnerships help provide the computing power needed to train and run advanced AI models.
Making AI widely accessible
Altman said the long-term goal is to make AI available to as many people as possible. If AI becomes as common as electricity, people may stop thinking about the technology itself. Instead, they will simply use it whenever they need help writing, analysing information, solving problems or building products. For Altman, this shift could mark the next stage of the AI industry where intelligence becomes a widely available service rather than a specialised tool.
