India batting coach Vikram Rathour has backed youngsters to come good in the ongoing Test series against England. The comments come on the back of India's loss by 28 runs in the first Test in Hyderabad. Rathour specifically took names of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer while addressing a press conference in Vizag ahead of the second Test match which starts on February 2.

“There are young batters in our team who have not played much Test cricket. So, we need to be a bit patient with them. Batters like (Shubman) Gill, (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and (Shreyas) Iyer will eventually start getting big runs, I’m sure of it,” Rathour said on Wednesday (Jan 31).

“There’s a difference between playing with intent and playing attacking cricket. I want them to play with intent. If there is the opportunity to score some runs, they should take it,” he added. “They need to decide by looking at the surface and conditions. So, the batters need to possess that intelligence as to which is the best or safest shot on the surface.”

“Could they have batted with more discipline? Maybe they could have. That’s what they need to decide and come up with their plans.”&nbsp;

“But, they need to score runs by playing their shots, as you need to back your strengths. Batting is always about scoring runs. It’s not about not getting out but how many runs you put on the board,” noted the batting coach further.

Among the three batters named by Rathour, Jaiswal had the best performance as he scored a quickfire 80 in India's first inning before managing 15 in the second innings. Iyer and Gill, on the other hand, failed miserably, managing just 48 and 23 runs in the Test match across both innings.&nbsp;

India, who currently trail 0-1 in the five-match series, will be aiming to equal it in the second Test.

India batting coach Vikram Rathour backs young batters to come good after first Test loss

India lost to England by 28 runs in the first Test, of the five-match series, in Hyderabad on Day 4 on Sunday (Jan 28). After the shocking loss, despite India taking a 190-run lead in first innings, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has shared a suggestion for Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. Jaffer feels India need to tweak their opening combination and advised captain Rohit to drop down to No. 3.

Since the West Indies Tests, held in mid-2023, Shubman Gill voluntarily opted to drop down to No. 3 from the opening slot and his spot was taken by Yashasvi Jaiswal. While Jaiswal and Rohit have stitched some big stands already, Jaffer feels Gill is not suited for No. 3 and, hence, asked for Hitman to take Gill's spot, allowing the two youngsters to form an exciting opening pair.

Jaffer wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "Gill and Jaiswal should open and Rohit should bat at no. 3 in the 2nd test in my opinion. Waiting to bat for his turn isn't helping Shubman, it's better he opens the innings. Rohit plays spin really well, so batting at no. 3 should not worry him too much."

Ind vs Eng, 2nd Test: Rohit Sharma at No. 3? Former opener suggests new opening pair for India

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal does not rue missing out on a hundred against England on day 2 (Jan 26) of the ongoing first Test in Hyderabad. The batter got out on 80 in the first over of the second day, adding just four runs to his overnight score of 76 from day 1. Jaiswal's innings gave India a quick start and half of England's 246 runs were wiped out by the time he went back in the dressing room.

"I was trying my best to do what I could and sometimes I can make a mistake and get out. Still, I'm learning. If I do make a mistake, I'll make sure that I try to learn from it," the batter said after the end of play on day 2.

Jaiswal was caught and bowled by England all-rounder Joe Root while trying to chip over short mid-off fielder. The batter, however, acknowledged that it would have been amazing to score a hundred.

"Of course, it would have been amazing if I would have scored a hundred. But what took me there was my thinking and my process to score runs and I was quite positive in my mind and I was just thinking, making sure I can build an innings. But it was good actually," he said.

India finished the second day of play at 421/7, with a lead&nbsp;of 175 runs. Ravindra Jadeja (82) and Axar Patel (35) were still on the crease.

IND vs ENG, 1st Test: 'I was trying...,' Yashasvi Jaiswal opens up on missing hundred on day 2

India ended day 1 of the first Test against England in Hyderabad with their nose ahead&nbsp;on Thursday (Jan 25). Yashasvi Jaiswal was batting unbeaten on 76&nbsp;along with Shubman Gill (14). The home team currently trails by 127 runs after bowling out England for 246 runs in their first innings. In reply, India posted 119&nbsp;runs for the loss of&nbsp;skipper Rohit Sharma's (28) wicket which was taken by Jack Leach.

Earlier, England won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch which spun, although not viciously, in the first session itself. England, however, had expected a similar pitch as they had named three spinners in their playing XI with Mark Wood being the lone pacer.

England started well as openers Ben Duckett and Zack Crawley added 58 runs for the first wicket. India's ace spinner Ravi Ashwin broke that partnership and the visitors kept losing wickets at regular interval afterwards. England went from 58/0 to 60/3 before Joe Root (29) and Jonny Bairstow (37)&nbsp;added 38 runs for the fourth wicket to take England into the lunch on day 1 at 108/3.

Skipper Ben Stokes then came to crease after Bairstow's wicket and scored 70 runs before being the last wicket&nbsp;to fall. England were eight down at tea with Stokes at 43 and the skipper came out all guns blazing after that. His hitting eventually took England to near 250 before Jasprit Bumrah bowled him with a peach of a delivery.

For India, spin duo of Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each. Ashwin, who's closing in on 500 Test wickets, managed 3/68 while Jadeja's figures read 3/88. Apart from them, third spinner Axar Patel also chipped in with 2/33 in 13 overs while Bumrah took rest of the two wickets to finish on 2/28 as Mohammed Siraj went wicketless.

IND vs ENG, 1st Test Day 1: Spinners, Yashasvi Jaiswal put India on top after England's 246

England opener Ben Duckett said that the visitors were surprised by the attacking intent of the Indian openers on day 1 of the first Test in Hyderabad on Thursday (Jan 25). Notably, India's Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Rohit Sharma took the attack to the bowlers as they got quick some runs after bowling England out for 246 in the first innings. Duckett, however, thinks that the positive intent from the Indian openers is a sign that the&nbsp;pitch is going to get worse as the game progresses.&nbsp;

"The way they played at the top was quite positive, and that's fair play to them. I don't think we necessarily thought they were going to come out and play like that," Duckett told talkSPORT.&nbsp;

"They don't always go about it like that, so to go about it that way shows that they probably think that pitch is going to get quite a bit worse," the English opener&nbsp;said to the reporters.

Talking about the pitch, Duckett acknowledged that it was a tricky pitch but they were happy with what they got on the board.&nbsp;

"It was quite a good day. I thought we were pretty happy there, getting bowled out for what we were. I thought Stokesy was superb. We found it pretty tricky and I think, to be honest, they played well and really positively tonight. It's tough work against that attack, and I thought we grafted really well today... when the ball is spinning like that on day one, it can be quite tough," he said.

ICC T20I Team of Year 2023: Four Indians in squad with Suryakumar as skipper; no players from Aus, Pak

Legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar feels talented young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will establish himself in the Test team after the England series at home. Rohit Sharma-led India take on Ben Stokes' England in a five-match Test series at home, with the first Test to get underway on Jan 25 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Jaiswal came into the Test setup after India moved past seniors Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, etc. following the WTC 2023 final loss. The left-hander has so far amassed 316 runs in four Tests,&nbsp;with a fifty and hundred (171), at an average of 45.14. The England series will be his first-ever at home since his debut in the format, in mid-2023. Thus, Gavaskar feels confident that the 22-year-old will make a name for himself in the upcoming red-ball assignments.

Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, "Yashasvi Jaiswal will easily settle in home conditions. He’s also a left-hander. I think he’ll establish himself completely in the Indian Test team after this series."

Further, Gavaskar backed Shreyas Iyer to be among the runs versus England. Iyer so far has&nbsp;707 runs in 12 Test matches,&nbsp;at an average of 39.27. However, the right-hander struggled against South Africa in their recent Test series&nbsp;in the African nation, ending with only&nbsp;41 runs in four innings.

Gavaskar added, "In the World Cup, Shreyas Iyer batted brilliantly in Indian pitches, so I’m hoping he’ll play similarly at No.5 in the Test series. He batted aggressively, was quite watchful at the start and then his stroke-making after reading the pitch was a delight to watch. I hope he’ll replicate that."

The last two Test series between India and England&nbsp;in India have resulted in 4-0 (2016-17) and 3-1 (2020-21) series triumphs for the home side. They&nbsp;have not lost a Test series on home soil since England beat them 2-1 in 2012/13.

The left-hander has so far amassed 316 runs in four Tests, with a fifty and hundred (171), at an average of 45.14. I think he’ll establish himself completely in the Indian Test team after this series." Also read: Cheteshwar Pujara joins Sachin, Dravid and Gavaskar in elite list after England series snub × Further, Gavaskar backed Shreyas Iyer to be among the runs versus England. Iyer so far has 707 runs in 12 Test matches, at an average of 39.27. However, the right-hander struggled against South Africa in their recent Test series in the African nation, ending with only 41 runs in four innings. I hope he’ll replicate that." The last two Test series between India and England in India have resulted in 4-0 (2016-17) and 3-1 (2020-21) series triumphs for the home side. They have not lost a Test series on home soil since England beat them 2-1 in 2012/13. India’s squad for first two Tests vs England Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Dhruv Jurel (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Avesh Khan.

Yashasvi Jaiswal will establish himself in the team after England home Tests, says Sunil Gavaskar

Shivam Dube was on fire at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, smashing an unbeaten 63 and picking a wicket, inspiring India to an easy six-wicket win in the second T20I against Afghanistan. With this, India clinched the T20I series, with the final game scheduled on January 24 in Bengaluru. Yashasvi Jaiswal also smashed a fifty, while Arshdeep bagged three wickets on a batting paradise.

Afghanistan batted first, with openers trying to put in the fifth gear from the word go. After Ravi Bishnoi accounted for Gurbaz on 14, Gulbadin Naib took the onus on himself and went about his business in some style. India picked two wickets in the span of two overs but couldn’t put brakes on the all-rounder’s innings as he completed his fifty (57 off 35 balls).

Though the middle order provided some assistance, with everyone contributing around 20-odd, India pulled the momentum back during the death overs.

<h2>Dube on song in Indore</h2>

In the absence of the ace all-rounder Hardik Pandya, left-handed batter Shivam Dube hogged all the limelight with yet another unbeaten fifty in this series. After Rohit Sharma got out on a first-ball duck, clean bowled by seamer Farooqi, Virat Kohli walked out to bat in a T20I game for the first time since the 2022 T20 World Cup semis loss.

The India great hammered the new ball to all parts of the ground, hitting five fours during his 16-ball 29-run stay at the crease. Although by then, he had helped India cross 60-run-mark inside the Powerplay.

2nd T20I: Shivam Dube, Yashasvi Jaiswal hammer Afghanistan in Indore as India win series

The Indian Team has taken a 2-0 lead over Australia in the five-match series with a impressive 44-run win in the second T20I in the southern city of Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. Top-order sparked the show with&nbsp;fifties as India registered the highest innings total against the Oz in the shortest format. Ravi Bishnoi and Prasidh Krishna starred with the ball in hand, picking three wickets each as India walked away with a dominant win.

Asked to bat first, the Indian openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad, put the fifth gear immediately, with Jaiswal taking the lead. The young prodigy slammed his quickest fifty in T20Is inside the Powerplay before edging one to the short-third man on 25-ball 53, hitting nine fours and two sixes.

An 87-run stand for the second wicket between Gaikwad and keeper-batter Ishan Kishan propelled India to cross 150 inside the 15th over, with both completing their respective fifties. Two quick wickets couldn’t hamper India’s momentum, as last match hero Rinku Singh began from where he had left, slamming a nine-ball 31, hitting four fours and two sixes.

2nd T20I: India hammer Australia in Thiruvananthapuram to go 2-0 up in five-match series

Ruturaj Gaikwad-led India opened their campaign in Asian Games 2023 with a 23-run win over Nepal on Tuesday (October 3). Riding on Yashasvi Jaiswal's maiden T20I ton (49-ball 100) and Rinku Singh's 15-ball 37 not out, India posted 202 for 4 and restricted the opposition to 179 for 9. With the win, India have progressed to the semi-finals. Jaiswal continued his rich form and scored his first-ever T20I century. In addition, he surpassed Shubman Gill to achieve a major Indian record.&nbsp;

Jaiswal, at the age of 21 years and 279 days, went past Gill's T20I record of being India's youngest-ever centurion in the shortest format. It is to be noted that the right-hander scored his maiden T20I hundred against New Zealand early this year. The 24-year-old Gill&nbsp;had smashed an impressive 126 not out, the highest individual score by an Indian in the format. Back then, Gill was 23 years old.

Talking about Jaiswal, the left-hander has been in sublime form this year. He ended IPL 2023 as the fifth-highest run-getter (with 625 runs in 14 games, including a best of 124). He carried his form during India's all-format tour of West Indies, slamming an impressive 171 on his Test debut and was among the runs in the five T20Is as well. Now, the youngster has started the Asian Games with a bang. Hence, he will be desperate to carry on with the momentum and take India to gold at the games -- where he also became the country's first-ever centurion on Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jaiswal is surely ticking all the boxes at the moment and is emerging as a strong contender to open for India in the next year's T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA. However, the mega event is still far away, hence, he would like to maintain consistency in the upcoming months.

Skipper Gaikwad scored 25 runs before getting out while Tilak Varma (2) and Jitesh Sharma (5) failed to make an impression. Rinku Singh (37) and Shivam Dube (25) would then lead India to 202/4 as they dominated with the bat.

Avesh Khan took three wickets for 32 while Ravi Bishnoi picked up three scalps by conceding 24. Arshdeep Singh got two wickets and Sai Kishore picked up one wicket.

Chasing a massive target, Nepal lost their first wicket early. Avesh Khan dismissed Aasif Sheikh in the 4th over at 10. Asian Games: Riding on Yashasvi Jaiswal's ton, India book semifinal berth, beat Nepal by 23 runs

Hardik Pandya-led India thrashed West Indies by nine wickets to win the fourth and penultimate T20I, in Florida, and level the five-match series on Saturday (August 12). Opting to bat first, Rovman Powell-led Windies piled up 178 for 8&nbsp;courtesy of Shai Hope's 45 and Shimron Hetmyer's 61. The total proved to be inadequate as Yashasvi Jaiswal (84 not out) and Shubman Gill (77) stitched a mammoth 165-run first-wicket stand to chase down the score in 17 overs.

With the ball, Arshdeep Singh (3 for 38) and Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 26) did the job for India to keep the Windies below the 200-run mark before Jaiswal-Gill stood tall. The opening duo ran hard between wickets and found the boundaries at regular intervals, smarting targetting the bowlers, to take India to a&nbsp;dominating win. After the clash, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa made a big claim.

<h2>'They can be something as great as Sachin Tendulkar-Sourav Ganguly opening the batting'</h2>

Uthappa said on Jio Cinema after the match, "Everyone who plays for India are equally capable and have equal ability but the way Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill bat in tandem; they can bat for each other as well and they need to find that space. If they do, they are going to be a very dangerous pair for India in years to come. It will be a hot pair and they can be something as great as a Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly opening the batting."

Hardik Pandya-led India thrashed West Indies by nine wickets to win the fourth and penultimate T20I, in Florida, and level the five-match series on Saturday (August 12). Opting to bat first, Rovman Powell-led Windies piled up 178 for 8 courtesy of Shai Hope's 45 and Shimron Hetmyer's 61. The opening duo ran hard between wickets and found the boundaries at regular intervals, smarting targetting the bowlers, to take India to a dominating win. After the clash, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa made a big claim. 'They can be something as great as Sachin Tendulkar-Sourav Ganguly opening the batting' Uthappa said on Jio Cinema after the match, "Everyone who plays for India are equally capable and have equal ability but the way Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill bat in tandem; they can bat for each other as well and they need to find that space. If they do, they are going to be a very dangerous pair for India in years to come. It will be a hot pair and they can be something as great as a Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly opening the batting." He added, "They need to figure a few things out and if they do, they will do great things for India." IND vs WI 4th T20I: Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal help India level series with dominating win

Former India opening batsman Wasim Jaffer wants Yashasvi Jaiswal to open batting in T20Is ahead of Ishan Kishan. Jaffer made the comments on the back of India's loss in first T20I against West Indies where they failed to chase a moderate 150-run target. Ishan, who opened the batting with Shubman Gill, could score only six runs before being dismissed.

“I want to see Yashasvi Jaiswal. He should play as an opening batter. I want to see Jaiswal in place of Ishan Kishan. Ishan Kishan’s T20I form worries me. In the last 15 innings, he hasn’t even scored a 40, the strike rate is also too low. So, that’s a cause of concern, but he was in good form in ODIs. It’s a different format (T20I). He also had an ordinary IPL season,” Jaffer said while speaking to ESPNCricinfo.

The former India batsman also gave the reasoning for selecting Jaiswal over Kishan and cited the former's IPL 2023 form as well.

“Why not give an opportunity to the boy who played very well in the IPL? He won the emerging player award and is confident. I’ll definitely look towards that change," Jaffer added.&nbsp;

Notably, Jaiswal had a blockbuster IPL 2023, scoring 625 runs in 14 games for Rajasthan Royals at an average of 48 and a strike rate of 163. Kishan, on the other hand, had a moderate IPL for Mumbai Indians, scoring 454 runs in 16 games at an average of 30 and a strike rate of 142.

Jaffer, however, agreed that the first T20I was played on a difficult pitch hence the openers could not play as freely as they would have liked. India, chasing a target of 150, could manage only 145/9 in 20 overs.

“The first T20I was played on a difficult pitch, so expecting them [Kishan and Shubman Gill] to play in that fashion (free-flowing mode) is too much expectation. It’s crucial to see the pitch for the second T20I. If it’s good enough, then our batters will obviously play well,” Jaffer added.

The second T20I of the five-match series will be played on Sunday, August 6 at the same venue, that is, Providence.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer wants Ishan Kishan replaced with THIS player in T20Is

India batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his debut in the recently-concluded Two-Test series against West Indies, has already made an impact in the ICC rankings. Jaiswal had scored a sublime hundred in his first Test innings in the first Test which India had won by an innings.

Come next match, Jaiswal followed his century with a fifty (57) in first innings of the second Test and scored a moderate 38 in the second innings to finish the series with 266 runs. Thanks to his performance, Jaiswal now sits at number 63 among batmen in the ICC ranking. While Jaiswal's spot is still far from top batsmen, his future looks bright for sure.&nbsp;

Apart from him, skipper Rohit Sharma continues to be in top 10 with 240 runs in three innings. Rohit, similar to Jaiswal, scored a century in first Test and hit two fifties in the second one. At number nine, Rohit is the only Indian batsman in top 10 with Rishabh Pant at 12 and Virat Kohli at 14.

Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson continues to lead the pack at the top with Marnus Labuschange at number 2 after his sublime hundred in Old Trafford. Englishman Joe Root is third while Aussie Travis Head and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam complete the top five.

Among the bowlers, India's Mohammed Siraj rose to a career-high 33 after his brilliant five-for in the second Test - a jump of five places. ICC Test Player Rankings: India's Mohammed Siraj, Yashasvi Jaiswal attain career-high spots after WI series

Rohit Sharma-led India beat West Indies 1-0 to win the two-match Test series, on the Caribbean island, on Monday (July 24). The fifth and final day's play of the series decider was completely washed out due to persistent rain as India failed to complete&nbsp;a series whitewash and couldn't add more points to their kitty in the 2023-25 WTC cycle. However, there is plenty to cheer for Indian fans as young guns such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan and Mohammed Siraj made a mark whereas seniors such as R Ashwin, captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were in top form.&nbsp;

Talking about Jaiswal, the left-hander became the 17th Indian, and 113th player overall, to score a century on Test debut. He scored a sublime 171 in the series opener and returned with the Player-of-the-Match award. In the series finale, the 21-year-old ended with 57 and a 30-ball 38 to end as the highest run-getter in the two Tests (with 266 runs). Thus, former Indian keeper-batter Deep Dasgupta lauded Jaiswal and feels 'he is comfortable and is ready for this level'.

<h2>'Jaiswal is going to get better'</h2>

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Jaiswal said, "That is a big positive. The way he batted, he looked comfortable. But again, he will face a lot of sterner challenges going forward in this format. The next series itself is going to be a huge challenge against South Africa. But I think what we have seen so far, it seems like he is comfortable and he is ready for this level. He is only going to get better. This was his first outing and he looked so good."

Dasgupta also praised Ishan Kishan, who also made his Test debut in the WI series. Kishan was impressive behind the stumps and scored his maiden fifty (34-ball 52 not out) in India's second innings of the final Test. “The fact of the matter is that Kishan is the kind of player that you would want in that middle-order, lower middle-order. He fits in that really nicely. He ticks a lot of those boxes. Keeping-wise, he looks stable, he looks solid. Nothing flamboyant or flashy, but consistent. He hasn't played a lot of red-ball cricket,” the ex-cricketer added.

India's next Test series is post the 2023 ODI World Cup. The team will tour South Africa for a two-match Test series and the likes of Jaiswal, Kishan, etc. will be eager to learn from their experience in the Caribbean island and make a mark in the African nation as well.&nbsp;

'He is ready for this level': Former India keeper-batter lauds young star after West Indies Tests

Former India player and World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir has backed young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for future success after a bright start to his international career. Jaiswal has hit the ground running at the international level having scored a hundred in his debut innings against West Indies in the first Test match. According to Gambhir, the Indian Premier League (IPL) was just a small stage for him as he predicts him to have a bright future.

<h2>Gambhir backs Jaiswal</h2>

"In India, the issue is that we take the 2 months of IPL so seriously that whoever does well we add him to the Indian team. Jaiswal has scored a double hundred in domestic cricket both in First Class and One-Day matches," Gambhir said about the talented Rajasthan Royals (RR) batter.

The Mumbai batter has been in excellent form for the last couple of years and has scored a hundred for India and RR while also registering the fastest fifty in IPL history. He has also scored a double hundred in the domestic circuit as he continues to impress the selectors.

Jaiswal has taken the international stage by storm as he backed his hundred in Dominica with a fifty in Port of Spain. Interestingly, his arrival has pushed Shubman Gill down the batting order and looks to have thrown a stern warning to KL Rahul, who is out of the Indian team due to injury.

Jaiswal has already built good chemistry with skipper Rohit Sharma with two hundred-run partnerships. In the first Test, both Rohit and Jaiswal put a stand of 229 runs for the opening wicket while they again repeated the trick in the second match with a 139-run stand in the first innings of the second Test match.

Former India player and World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir has backed young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for future success after a bright start to his international career.

Gambhir backs Jaiswal "In India, the issue is that we take the 2 months of IPL so seriously that whoever does well we add him to the Indian team. Gautam Gambhir backs THIS young star for future success, says 'IPL is merely the icing on the cake'

Yashasvi Jaiswal was close to scripting history for India during day one of the second West Indies Test in Port of Spain but fell shy of achieving it. After completing a debut ton in the first Test in Dominica, becoming the 17th Indian batter to reach the milestone, Jaiswal got out on 57 in the first innings on Thursday.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, it was Virat Kohli – playing his 500th international game for India, who made headlines for his impressive 87.

Asked to bat first, Indian openers again dominated, with Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal stitching a 139-run stand for the first wicket. Following Jaiswal’s dismissal off Jason Holder, India lost two more wickets in quick succession. However, it was Virat Kohli who saved India’s sinking ship with his 108-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja.

Talking about his dismissal, Jaiswal expressed disappointment but admitted scoring runs on this good Trinidad pitch felt better.&nbsp;

"Of course, I'm disappointed, but it happens in cricket," Jaiswal said at the end of the first day's play at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain. "I've to keep learning and make sure what I can do the next time I come in that situation. It's okay, it's cricket.

"Every time the desire is to ensure how well I can contribute and play well for the team. That's the thought in every match - to set a good platform for the team.

"Whenever I bat, I always try to bat for long. There's of course disappointment when we get out. It's cricket, we need to keep learning what we can do next time. It's always a pleasure to play for the country, to enjoy the pressure, to enjoy the situation, enjoy the wicket, the environment," the Indian opener added.

<h2>Ready for whatever comes</h2>

Jaiswal sounded confident of India’s chances of making a huge total on the board following a brilliant start. He opened up on batting with Rohit at the top, who also scored a well-made 80.&nbsp;

"We were ready for whatever comes. This wicket was different from the previous wicket. It was good to bat on, I was enjoying batting with Rohit Bhaiya. We're always talking about the situation and how we can go ahead. Of course, we had our plans of what we can do," Jaiswal added.

Heaping praises on the veteran Kohli, Jaiswal said he enjoys batting alongside him and that, with so much experience, there’s always to learn about cricket from Kohli.

"We've been batting well. We will think about having a good target. Let's see what will happen tomorrow. It's always great to watch him (Virat Kohli) bat and bat alongside him. He's a legend, and I'm blessed to play with him. It's wonderful to go out with him and learn from him. There is a lot to learn from him, to keep watching what he does outside the field and on the field. It's a pleasure to talk to him and learning from him,” the young left-handed opener concluded.

WI vs IND: Yashasvi Jaiswal rues missing out on scoring successive Test ton on a good Trinidad wicket

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has tipped Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill to take Indian cricket forward once the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retire. Both Kohli and Rohit are in the last phase of their careers. Thus, Team India is focused in grooming the youngsters to keep the team in good stead by the time Kohli, Rohit, R Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ishant Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Shikhar Dhawan, etc. retire.

<h2>'Jaiswal and Gill&nbsp;strong contenders to take Indian cricket's batting&nbsp;forward after Rohit&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kohli'</h2>

Thus, Jaffer feels young stars such as Jaiswal and Gill have it in them to take over the baton from Kohli and Rohit once the duo steps aside. During a discussion on JioCinema, he stated, "One is Yashasvi Jaiswal. I see him as a three-format player. He has performed amazingly well in the IPL and has made an excellent start in Test cricket."

"Shubman Gill is the second name I will take. If we talk only about batting, I see these two players as very strong contenders who will take Indian cricket forward after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli,"&nbsp;Jaffer further opined.

In addition, Jaffer also picked Gujarat Titans' (GT) Sai Sudharsan as another strong candidate to handle India's batting responsibilities in future. "Sai Sudharsan is a player who I have liked a lot, the way he has played in the IPL. After that, he has scored a century against Pakistan A in the emerging teams' tournament that is going on. So I feel he can become a very good player in the future," added the former batter who represented India in 31 Tests and two ODIs.

Jaiswal and Gill have been in splendid form in 2023. Gill has scored hundreds across formats -- including a double ton in ODIs -- and was the Orange Cap winner for most runs (890) in IPL 2023. Jaiswal also ended this year's IPL with 625 runs, including a best of 124, and scored a sublime 171 in his debut Test in the ongoing West Indies tour.

Sudharshan, on the other hand, had a good run in IPL 2023, followed by consistent performances in Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). Recently, he also scored a century versus Pakistan in the ongoing Emerging Asia Cup tournament.

Jaiswal, Gill will take Indian cricket forward after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, predicts Wasim Jaffer

Yashasvi Jaiswal was the star performer for Team India in their massive win over West Indies in the two-match Test series opener in Dominica. The left-hander started his Test career with an impressive 171 to become the 17th Indian to hit a century on Test debut, 113th overall. Jaiswal started on a promising note and never looked out of sorts to make a roaring start to his international career.&nbsp;

Ever since Jaiswal announced his arrival in style at the international level, talks are rife that he should be given a run in the white-ball formats as well. While India have only a handful of games left prior to the ODI World Cup's commencement, at home, some feel Jaiswal can still be tried in the 50-over format. Former Indian skipper and BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly has backed Jaiswal to be a part of the ODI WC squad. In conversation with the Telegraph on the young player, Ganguly heaped praise on the 21-year-old and feels he is a 'must' for the ODI WC squad.

“Scoring a hundred on debut is always massive. I too have done it, so I know how special it is. Even technique-wise, he seems really good. A left-handed batsman’s presence in the team always helps. So, having him in the World Cup squad is a must,” Ganguly emphasised.

<h2>'Our role is important as we have to give them clarity'</h2>

While highlighting the potential of the emerging players, Rohit stated, "Transition has to happen, whether today or tomorrow but I am happy that our boys who are coming in are doing well. And our role is important as we have to give them role clarity. Now it's up to them how they want to prepare and perform for the team. ... And we rely on those individuals and obviously they are the future of Indian cricket and they will take Indian cricket to greater heights."

WI vs IND: Rohit Sharma talks about role of seniors in grooming youngsters as India aims for smooth transition

Yashasvi Jaiswal was the star for India in their two-match Test series opener versus West Indies in Dominica. After R Ashwin's five-for led to the Windies being bundled out for 150, India rode on centuries from captain Rohit Sharma (103) and debutant Jaiswal, who slammed an impressive 171, to declare at 421 for 5 with an overall lead of 271. In reply, Ashwin again starred with the ball, returning with 7 for 71, as India dismissed the hosts for 130 to win by an innings and 141 runs.&nbsp;

Thus, Jaiswal is off to a brilliant start to his international career as he also ended with the Player-of-the-Match award. Ahead of the second and final Test, in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, India's batting coach Vikram Rathour heaped praise on the swashbuckling left-hander and made a big statement.

<h2>Yashasvi is a dynamic batsman:&nbsp;Rathour</h2>

In a press conference, Rathour said, "I’ve been a selector before, so whenever you pick a player you should pick him with the intent that he will play for India for the next 10 years. He definitely has the potential."

“For me, the most important thing (even though) I haven’t worked with Yashasvi before, was that I had seen him scoring runs at the IPL, you saw how dynamic a batsman he is, the kind of stroke player he is. But he managed to change the game according to the situation of the team," he added.

Jaiswal stitched a mammoth 229-run opening stand with captain Rohit (103) to become only the 17th Indian, 113th overall, to slam a ton on his Test debut. He started off on a promising note and while he took a step back during Day Two's proceedings, he always looked in complete control and took his innings forward. After a stunning start to his red-ball career, Jaiswal said at the post-match presentation, "Preparation was pretty good. We were having a nice session. Spoke a lot to Rahul Dravid sir. Would like to thank all the selectors and Rohit (Sharma) bhai for having faith in me. It's really nice, I have been working for this. I've been focusing on preparing well and having discipline. Playing Test cricket for India is very special and emotional for me. This is just the start, I need to keep my focus and keep working on my cricket."

India will now face the Windies in the second and final Test on July 20 with an aim to whitewash the series and add more points to their kitty in the new 2023-25 WTC cycle.

Ahead of the second and final Test, in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, India's batting coach Vikram Rathour heaped praise on the swashbuckling left-hander and made a big statement. Yashasvi is a dynamic batsman: Rathour In a press conference, Rathour said, "I’ve been a selector before, so whenever you pick a player you should pick him with the intent that he will play for India for the next 10 years. He definitely has the potential." “For me, the most important thing (even though) I haven’t worked with Yashasvi before, was that I had seen him scoring runs at the IPL, you saw how dynamic a batsman he is, the kind of stroke player he is. But he managed to change the game according to the situation of the team," he added. Also Read: 'We've been wiped out 0-4 but....': Sunil Gavaskar wants Indian captains to be more liable for heavy defeats Jaiswal stitched a mammoth 229-run opening stand with captain Rohit (103) to become only the 17th Indian, 113th overall, to slam a ton on his Test debut. This is just the start, I need to keep my focus and keep working on my cricket." India will now face the Windies in the second and final Test on July 20 with an aim to whitewash the series and add more points to their kitty in the new 2023-25 WTC cycle. 'He will play for India for next 10 years': India's batting coach lavishes huge praise on Yashasvi Jaiswal

India had a new number three in Shubman Gill in over a decade during the first Test against West Indies. Gill had replaced India stalwart Cheteshwar Pujara for the slot and those can be pretty big shoes to fill. While the suggestion to bat at number three came from Gill, he could not make much impact in his maiden innings, scoring 6 off 11 balls.

India batting coach Vikram Rathour, speaking to reporters after India's win in the first Test, explained the rationale behind Gill asking to bat at one down position.&nbsp;

"Three openers were supposed to play, so one had to go at No. 3 and the proposal came from Shubman's end as his rationale was that he had played all his cricket for Punjab and India A at either No. 3 or 4 and that's his real slot in longer format is that," Rathour said at a press conference.

While Gill may have failed to leave any mark in a Test where top three of four players from India scored at least a fifty, Rathour was confident of Gill's abilities at number three.

"We can't judge him on basis of one innings. He has a lot of time. He has the technique and temperament to play time if required and can also play an attacking game when a move on is needed. He can move the game forward. That is what we need at No. 3 as it can be advantageous," Rathour added.

Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal (171) and Rohit Sharma (103) had scored a century each as openers while Virat Kohli scored 76 at number four as India amassed 421 runs in their first innings.

Young Jaiswal was given Player of the Match award for scoring a ton in his debut game. Apart from him, veteran off-spinner Ravi Ashwin took 12 wickets in the match.

Ind vs WI: 'This is just...,' Yashasvi Jaiswal fires warning after blockbuster Test debut

Ricky Ponting is impressed with Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Test debut and feels India has enough bench strength in batting to rule cricket in the times to come. Jaiswal’s 171 against West Indies in the first Test put him in the elite company of players with the highest score on Test debut for India.

Speaking on the ICC Review following India’s record win by an innings and 141 runs, Ponting said he saw Jaiswal grow as a player during the IPL 2023 and, with what he produced in Dominica, it reflects the truckload of talent he owns. “I mean (Yashasvi) Jaiswal’s IPL was something special. He almost just flicked a switch and turned into a superstar overnight,” Ponting said in the recent episode of The ICC Review. “Everyone knew that he was a talented youngster, but what I saw in this year’s IPL, he’s got all sorts of talent.” Ponting added another player in the ranks - Ruturaj Gaikwad, if given a chance can take the cricket world by storm. The right-handed batter from Maharashtra has been churning out runs at will in IPL for the past few years for Chennai Super Kings and remains in the reckoning for a Test debut. ALSO READ: 'In the last one year, Bumrah is one player we missed a lot,' says India's bowling coach after Test win vs WI Ponting is on record saying if India plans to change fortunes in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, they must give an extended rope to players like Ruturaj. “There’s a lot of those young Indian guys that I can’t wait to see play Test cricket, and yet you look at their domestic records as well, and you can’t help but be impressed,” Ponting said. “I’m on record saying that I think (Ruturaj) Gaikwad’s the same (as Jaiswal). I think he could be a very serious Test match player or all-format player really in the next couple of years.” Shaw, Sarfaraz are standouts, must be given chances Ponting, the head coach of the Delhi Capitals side, for whom opener Prithvi Shaw and domestic giant Sarfaraz Khan play, feels these two players aren’t behind when it comes to being talented. He, however, remains baffled on how despite averaging nearly 80 in first-class cricket – which is second to Donald Bradman - Sarfaraz hasn’t got his Test cap yet. “The one I do feel a little bit sorry for is Sarfaraz Khan. The fact that he hasn’t got a look in a Test squad just yet, considering he averages in the high 80s, I think in first-class cricket, which is absolutely unheard of, but for some reason, they keep picking these other guys ahead of him,” Ponting said of Sarfaraz. “If I wind the clock back a couple of years, I’d put Prithvi Shaw into that category as well. I still think he’s capable of getting back to that sort of, you know, if he wants to do it enough, I’m sure he can get back up there because talent-wise there’s no doubt in the talent he’s got,” Ponting added. 'Winning is most important': Yashasvi Jaiswal after Dominica Test victory

India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has backed Ravichandran Ashwin as one of the greatest match-winners in the history of Indian cricket after he produced another match-winning performance on Day 3 of the Dominica Test on Friday, July 14 evening. Ashwin, produced a magical spell on Friday as India beat hosts West Indies by an innings and 141 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The Tamil Nadu veteran spinner bagged 12 wickets in the match including seven in the second innings of West Indies.

<h2>Ashwin's biggest match-winner?</h2>

“As a team, we realise how valuable R Ashwin is. In my opinion, he is one of the greatest match-winners for India. There have been very few match-winners like him. The number of matches he has helped us win what can I say,” Mhambrey said in the post-match after India beat the hosts.

India were at their fluent best contest as they asserted their dominance in the first World Test Championship (WTC) match. Ashwin’s brilliance turned out to be the difference-maker having bagged 60/5 in the first innings and followed that with 71/7 in the second innings. He now has 486 wickets in the red-ball format and is closing in on the 500-wicket mark.

“When we came here on Day 1, it was a bit dry, and when we checked the stats of the local games we found out that spinners dominated in those games. We felt as the game progresses it will be difficult for batting and the other thing is how we use the wicket,” Mhambrey added.

<h2>What happened in the match?</h2>

India continued from 312/2 at the start of Day 3 and added another 109 runs before deciding to declare the innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 171 runs in his debut innings before he was scalped by Alzarri Joseph while Virat Kohli missed out on a hundred and was dismissed on 76. India would then turn the screw in the second innings of West Indies and win the contest by an innings. Despite being at his best, it was Jaiswal who was adjourned Player of the Match in the contest.

The second Test between India and West Indies will take start on Thursday, July 20 in Trinidad.

India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has backed Ravichandran Ashwin as one of the greatest match-winners in the history of Indian cricket after he produced another match-winning performance on Day 3 of the Dominica Test on Friday, July 14 evening.

Ashwin's biggest match-winner? WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. IND vs WI: He is one of the greatest match-winners - Paras Mhambrey heaps praise on THIS veteran

Yashasvi Jaiswal is cut for great things in life. The young left-handed batter made a stunning debut against West Indies in the first Test in Dominica, hitting 171 in the first innings - the third-highest individual total scored by an Indian debutant in Tests.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is cut for great things in life. The young left-handed batter made a stunning debut against West Indies in the first Test in Dominica, hitting 171 in the first innings - the third-highest individual total scored by an Indian debutant in Tests. Captain Rohit Sharma, who, 10 years back, scored a brilliant 177 against the same side on his Test debut in Kolkata, lauded Jaiswal, adding he was most impressed with his temperament and ability to stick with the plans and deliver. Jaiswal opened alongside Rohit, and the pair stitched a 229-run stand for the first wicket. While he remained unbeaten on 143 after playing 350 balls – batting throughout day two, Jaiswal could add just 28 runs more before getting out to Alzarri Joseph for a well-made 171 early on day three. He played 387 balls and lasted 501 minutes at the crease – the longest by an Indian on Test debut. He also earned the Player of the Match award for his outstanding outing. Speaking to the media after the Test, Rohit talked highly of Jaiswal, saying he and the team management knew about his credentials and that the young batter has shown what he can achieve on the bigger stage. "He's got the talent," Rohit said of Jaiswal. "We knew about it. He's shown us in the past couple of years that he's ready for this big stage. Came and batted sensibly, showed a lot of patience, and the temperament was tested as well - at no stage [did it look] like he was panicking or going away from his plans, which was good to see." Results speak for themselves – Rohit on star spin duo Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja shared 17 wickets among them in the first Test, and Rohit didn’t have anything else to say about them than just showering praises. "The results speak for themselves," Rohit said of the two spinners. "Both of these guys have been doing it for a while for us now. They know exactly what is expected out of them. There's not much to tell them [about] what we need to do. It's just about going to them and giving them that freedom to go and express because that is when they're doing their best for the side as well.” The second Test will begin on July 20th at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad. WI vs IND 2023: 'He showed patience, temperament, stuck to his plans': Rohit lauds debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal

Ravichandran Ashwin's seven-wicket second innings demolition job underlined his utter dominance of an inept West Indies team who crashed to defeat by an innings and 141 runs late on the third day of the first Test against India in Dominica on Friday. It was India's largest margin of victory in a Test match in the West Indies. India maintains an unbeaten run spanning more than 21 years against the Carrebean&nbsp;opponents going into the second and final Test starting next Thursday in Trinidad.

After Rohit Sharma declared the tourists' first innings at 421 for five, 40 minutes into the afternoon session, first day destroyers Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja wasted little time in adding to that first innings success to skittle the Caribbean team for 130 in just over 50 overs.

Ashwin fittingly ended the match by trapping last man Jomel Warrican leg-before.

His second innings' haul of 7-71 lifted his match figures to 12 -131 -– his eighth match haul of 10 wickets or more in Tests -- while the support of Jadeja kept relentless pressure on a home side technically and temperamentally incapable of coping with such quality spin bowling on a helpful pitch.

Debutant Alick Athanaze was again the top scorer with 28 but his effort paled in comparison to his Indian counterpart as opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal led the way in India's only innings with a determined, dedicated innings of 171 which spanned more than eight hours and consumed&nbsp;387 deliveries.

That effort earned him the player of the match award notwithstanding the fantastic bowling figures of Ashwin.

"This experience has been a special moment," said the 21-year-old left-hander. "I used to think about playing for my country when I was young. It is an emotional moment for me but this just the start."

<h2>- 'Let ourselves down' -</h2>

For West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite, the emotions were the exact opposite on a forgettable day personally and for his team.

"I didn't think it spun a lot early on, we just let ourselves down with the bat," said the opener, a comment which immediately raised a few eyebrows given how the pitch behaved virtually from the first session. &nbsp;"Senior guys, starting with myself, have to lead the way. We have to use the bat more instead of our pads."

As on day one, Brathwaite and opening partner Tagenarine Chanderpaul had to cope with spin just minutes into the start of the second innings and although he was dropped on nought, Ashwin eventually put him out of his misery. He had missed a straightforward chance at short extra-cover in the morning offered by Virat Kohli off left-arm spinner Warrican.

Dropped at 40, Kohli went on to score 76 before falling to Rahkeem Cornwall just after lunch. The burly off-spinner was only allowed to bowl after the morning period because of time spent off the field on the first day when he was unwell.

Earlier, West Indies finally prised out Jaiswal and added the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane pre-lunch.

Jaiswal was finally undone by the extra pace and bounce extracted by fast bowler Alzarri Joseph in edging a catch to wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva after an hour's play.

With India resuming Day 2 of the first Test versus a hapless West Indies in Dominica at 80 for no loss in response to the Windies' paltry 150, Jaiswal continued his merry run and achieved the rare feat in style during a mammoth opening stand with captain Rohit Sharma.&nbsp;

Jaiswal went to stumps on the opening day at 40 not out and gave a glimpse of what was in store. He began with a lot of confidence on Day One and continued to display his immense talent throughout. Jaiswal's knock showcased his strong mental strength as well as the ability to stitch a long and patient innings.

By reaching the three-figure mark on his first Test, Jaiswal has now become only the 17th Indian, and 113th overall, to kick off his red-ball career with a ton. The last Indian to slam a hundred on Test debut was Shreyas Iyer, who achieved the feat during India's home Tests versus New Zealand in the 2021-23 WTC cycle.

He was 63 shy from reaching 3,500 Test runs and reached the milestone without dropping much sweat.

Talking about the game, Kraigg Brathwaite-led Windies are on the mat. After opting to bat, they managed only 150 -- courtesy of R Ashwin's five-for -- whereas they have struggled to take wickets with India eyeing a mammoth first-innings lead in the Dominica Test.
