‘Never seen anyone so crazy for Nobel’: Kailash Satyarthi on Machado handing prize to Trump

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado on Thursday (Jan 15) presented US President Donald Trump with her Nobel Peace medal at the White House as she tries to win over the POTUS, who has been sidelined since ousting Nicolas Maduro. Following the gesture, the Nobel Committee has broken its silence, saying that the Peace Prize is inseparable from the person who won it, downplaying Trump getting the medal. The US president sought the world’s most prestigious peace prize since he came to the office in January last year, claiming he has ended several wars around the world. In a statement, the Oslo-based committee said, “Regardless of what may happen to the medal, the diploma, or the prize money, it is and remains the original laureate who is recorded in history as the recipient of the prize.”It further added, “Even if the medal or diploma later comes into someone else’s possession, this does not alter who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.” The Nobel Committee also said that it would not comment “on Peace Prize laureates or the political processes that they are engaged in.”The committee added that there were no restrictions on what the laureates did with the medal, diploma and money they received as part of the Nobel Prize, listing several laureates who sold or gave away their medals.Trump had sought last year’s Nobel Peace Prize, claiming he had stopped eight wars, including conflict between Israel and Hamas, Israel and Iran, India and Pakistan, Thailand and Cambodia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Egypt and Ethiopia, Serbia and Kosovo, and Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, the prize went to Machado, who escaped from Venezuela by boat to collect her award in Oslo last month.According to the award citation, Machado won hers for “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

"One of the biggest reasons for this unbelievable success has been our historic use of tariffs. It was the tariff that made America strong and powerful in past generations," he added. He further boasted that growth is at an all-time high, and about new highs in the stock market, while blaming the Fed Chair Jerome Powell for keeping the interest rates high. "Today, if you announce great numbers, they raise interest rates to try and kill it, so you can never really have the kind of rally you should have," he said. Trump suggested that he wants someone to lead the Fed, "when the market is doing great, interest rates can go down". The POTUS declared that the US economy is going to grow rapidly, "we're going to have a lot of great months, a lot of great quarters", and added that he wants the market "to go up." The trade deal with Canada and Mexico is irrelevant Donald Trump declared that America does not need the USMCA trilateral deal, which enables business between North America's three biggest economies: the United States, Mexico and Canada. He added that he wants to encourage manufacturing in the US, not Canada. Also Read: Secret meeting? Did US Envoy Steve Witkoff meet exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi as protests in Iran escalates? "There's no real advantage to it, it's irrelevant," he said, adding he wanted to build cars "here, not in Canada." Trump blamed the Biden administration for the decline in manufacturing and asserted that, currently, under him, "we have more plants being built in our country than in any time in history!" Trump made these remarks during a visit to the Ford Production facility in Dearborn, Michigan, ahead of his address on the US economy in Detroit.

US President Donald Trump on Monday (Jan 12) said that the United States would be “screwed” if the Supreme Court ruled that some of his tariffs are illegal. He added that the move would be a “complete mess” as hundreds of billions of dollars would have to be paid back to US companies, an amount that would be “almost impossible” for the United States to pay. He further claimed that “America shines brightly, the World shines brightly.”“The actual numbers that we would have to pay back if, for any reason, the Supreme Court were to rule against the United States of America on Tariffs, would be many Hundreds of Billions of Dollars, and that doesn’t include the amount of ‘payback’ that Countries and Companies would require for the Investments they are making on building Plants, Factories, and Equipment, for the purpose of being able to avoid the payment of Tariffs,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. He further added, “When these Investments are added, we are talking about Trillions of Dollars! It would be a complete mess, and almost impossible for our Country to pay. Anybody who says that it can be quickly and easily done would be making a false, inaccurate, or totally misunderstood answer to this very large and complex question. It may not be possible but, if it were, it would be Dollars that would be so large that it would take many years to figure out what number we are talking about and even, who, when, and where, to pay.”“Remember, when America shines brightly, the World shines brightly. In other words, if the Supreme Court rules against the United States of America on this National Security bonanza, WE’RE SCREWED!” Trump said. The Supreme Court is expected to release opinions on Wednesday, with the tariffs case having a possibility of being among the rulings. The case was argued last year in November in the Court. During the arguments, several justices appeared sceptical of Trump invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs on trade partners of the US, including Mexico, Canada and China, over their alleged roles in illicit drug flows.Trump’s policies have brought the US tariff rate to its highest since the 1930s. He has also repeatedly warned of calamity if the duties are overturned. Notably, the court’s decision will not impact sector-specific tariffs imposed, including on steel, aluminium, and automobiles.

Trump warned the US would be “screwed” if the Supreme Court strikes down his tariffs, saying hundreds of billions or even trillions could be owed back. The court is set to rule soon on a challenge to his use of emergency powers.

State Department deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott said that the four leading causes for the revocations were overstays, driving under the influence, assault and theft. He added that the revocations marked a 150 per cent increase from 2024.Pigott added that the State Department has also launched a Continuous Vetting Center focused on ensuring “all foreign nationals on American soil comply with our laws — and that the visas of those who pose a threat to American citizens are swiftly revoked.”The State Department said earlier in November that it had revoked around 80,000 non-immigrant visas for offences ranging from drunk driving to assault and theft since Trump took office on January 20 last year.In December, the US authorities also started enhanced screening of H-1B and dependent H-4 visa applicants, including vetting social media profiles. Since then, several H-1B visa interviews have been postponed across India, leaving applicants who travelled for a visa stamping stranded for months.Trump administration officials have said that student visa holders and legal permanent residents with “green cards” could also be deported if they show support for Palestinians and criticised Israel’s conduct in the Gaza war, calling their actions a threat to US foreign policy and accusing them of being pro-Hamas.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday (Jan 11) posted a photo of an edited Wikipedia page of himself listed as the “Acting President of Venezuela” on his Truth Social platform. This comes amid the heightened tensions with the South American nation after a US military operation that captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and bombed Caracas. Trump had earlier announced that the US is “in charge” of Venezuela and that he will control the oil reserves in the country.

Earlier this month, on January 3, US forces seized the Venezuelan leader in what it described as its war against drug cartels and drug lords. In an operation titled Operation Absolute Resolve, the American forces entered Venezuela, bombed Caracas and captured Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from their presidential palace under the orders of Trump.Washington has accused Maduro of running a drug cartel and had placed a bounty of $50 million on him. Maduro was flown to USS Iwo Jima, then to Guantánamo Bay, and finally by government plane to Stewart Air National Guard Base in NY. He is held at Brooklyn’s notorious Metropolitan Detention Center and is facing charges of narco-terrorism and cocaine importation conspiracies. He made his first appearance in Manhattan federal court on Jan 5, where he pleaded not guilty.Meanwhile, Trump suggested that he was open to a meeting with the country’s interim leader, Delcy Rodriguez. Despite being a close Maduro ally, Rodriguez has shown a willingness to work with the US, saying she is open to cooperating on Trump’s demands for access to Venezuelan oil.“Venezuela is really working out well. We’re working along really well with the leadership,” Trump told reporters Sunday aboard Air Force One.When asked if he planned to meet with Rodriguez, Trump said: “At some point I’ll be.”Trump also said that he expected to meet with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado on Tuesday or Wednesday.

US President Donald Trump, on Friday (January 2), in a Truth Social post, said that he is in perfect health and that he has passed the test for the third straight time. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, US President Donald Trump addressed concerns about his health, including the noticeable bruises on his hands, an MRI he had, and his tendency to nod off during public meetings. Trump attributed his health to "very good genetics" and offered a rare glimpse into his medical habits, some of which he admitted were driven by "superstition." His comments contrasted with the more cautious explanations provided by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt in the past months. Since his return to office in January, questions about Trump’s health have persisted, especially after photos showing dark bruises on his hands circulated. Leavitt had previously brushed off these concerns, often attributing the bruises to frequent handshaking or his daily aspirin use. However, Trump revealed a different explanation. He confirmed that he takes 325 milligrams of aspirin each day—four times the typical low-dose amount—despite doctors advising him to reduce it. Trump explained that this long-standing habit was tied to superstition, noting that he believes aspirin helps thin his blood, and he doesn’t want to risk "thick blood" running through his heart.

US President Donald Trump on Monday (Dec 29) said that he is not worried about China conducting military drills near Taiwan. He added that he shares a “great” relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but he was not informed about the drills around the island, which China is seeking to seize. On Tuesday (Dec 30), China conducted a second live-fire drill as tensions rise with the island. Beijing has said that the military drills are aimed at simulating a blockade of the self-ruled island’s key ports and assaults on maritime targets.“I have a great relationship with President Xi [Jinping], and he hasn't told me anything about [the drills]. I certainly have seen it,” Trump told reporters during a press conference on Monday.“No, nothing worries me. They’ve been doing naval exercises for 20 years in that area,” he added. The two-day drills, which have been termed as “Justice Mission 2025” drew condemnation from Taipei as “military intimidation”. China’s top diplomat said that Beijing would “forcefully counter” large-scale US weapons sales to Taiwan.“In response to the continuous provocations by pro-independence forces in Taiwan and the large-scale US arms sales to Taiwan, we must of course, resolutely oppose and forcefully counter them,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a speech on Tuesday. He added that any attempt to stop China’s unification with Taiwan “will inevitably end in failure.”Meanwhile, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te has vowed on Tuesday that his territory would not “provoke” or “escalate the conflict”.“In response to the Chinese authorities’ disregard for international norms and the use of military intimidation to threaten neighbouring countries, Taiwan expresses its strong condemnation,” Taiwan’s Presidential Office spokeswoman Karen Kuo said in a statement a day earlier.Taiwan said that it detected 130 Chinese military aircraft near the island within 24 hours. It also said that a total of 14 Chinese navy ships and eight unspecified vessels were spotted.

On Thursday (Dec 25), Trump announced that the US troops carried out what he described as “powerful and deadly” strikes against ISIS targets in the West African nation, marking the first US military action in the country under his current term.In an interview with Politico published on Friday, Trump accused the ISIS militants in Nigeria of persecuting Christians, adding that the US strikes “decimated their camps”. The US president also said that the attack was originally planned for Wednesday but was delayed one day by him for symbolic reasons.“They were going to do it earlier,” Trump told Politico. “And I said, ‘nope, let’s give a Christmas present.’” He further added, “They didn’t think that was coming, but we hit them hard. Every camp got decimated.”Meanwhile, Nigeria’s information minister said on Friday that the US used guided missiles launched from drones in the strikes conducted on Christmas.“A total of 16 GPS-guided precision munitions were deployed using MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial platforms, successfully neutralising the targeted ISIS elements attempting to penetrate Nigeria from the Sahel corridor,” Information Minister Mohammed Idris said in a statement.Idris added that the attack was carried out with the “full involvement of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” with “explicit approval” from President Bola Tinubu. He added that no civilians were injured in the attacks.“The strikes were launched from maritime platforms domiciled in the Gulf of Guinea, after extensive intelligence gathering, operational planning, and reconnaissance,” Idris said. “Debris from expended munitions fell in Jabo, Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, and in Offa, Kwara State.”Washington earlier released a video of projectiles being launched by a US Navy ship. The United States Africa Command confirmed that “multiple ISIS militants” were killed in the operation. No details were released on the exact locations hit or the number of casualties.
‘MERRY CHRISTMAS to dead terrorists’
Announcing the strikes, Trump had written on his Trump Social platform, “Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in Northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even Centuries! I have previously warned these Terrorists that if they did not stop the slaughtering of Christians, there would be hell to pay, and tonight, there was. The Department of War executed numerous perfect strikes, as only the United States is capable of doing. Under my leadership, our Country will not allow Radical Islamic Terrorism to prosper. May God Bless our Military, and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, including the dead Terrorists, of which there will be many more if their slaughter of Christians continues.”

US President Donald Trump on Monday (Dec 22) reiterated that the United States “needs” Greenland for national security and not for minerals. Peace plan to end Russia-Ukraine war will be presented to Putin in days, says Zelensky

US President Donald Trump on Monday (Dec 15) said that a deal to end the war between Russia and Ukraine was “closer than ever”. He made the remarks as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held discussions with key leaders in Berlin as part of efforts to end the war, where Europeans proposed a “multinational force” to enforce a potential peace accord. Meanwhile, Zelensky described the discussions with US envoys as challenging but constructive, stating that the talks yielded tangible progress despite their complexity.“I think we’re closer now than we have been ever,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. He added that he had “very long and very good talks” with Zelensky and others, including the leaders of Britain, France, Germany and NATO.Following the talks in Germany, European leaders issued a joint statement proposing a force as part of the US-backed “robust security guarantees” that would guarantee that Russia would not violate a peace agreement to end the war that started in 2022 after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion.Zelensky said that the talks with Trump’s envoys were “not easy” but brought “progress”.“These conversations are always not easy, I'll be honest with you. But it was a productive conversation, with a lot of details, really a lot,” he said after his meeting on the second day with Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and special envoy Steve Witkoff.“There has been sufficient dialogue on the territory, and I think that, frankly speaking, we still have different positions,” Zelensky told reporters.Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the talks had created the “chance for a real peace process”. He also praised the US for offering “substantial” security guarantees. The European statement, which was signed by leaders, including those of Britain, France and Germany, also stated that the Ukrainian military should continue receiving support and maintain a peacetime strength of 800,000 troops. It added that peace would be maintained by a “US-led ceasefire monitoring and verification mechanism”, which would identify violations and “provide early warning of any future attack.”

The United States and Mexico reached an agreement on sharing water on Friday (Dec 13). This comes after US President Donald Trump earlier this week threatened his neighbouring nation with additional tariffs, accusing it of violating its “comprehensive water treaty”. In a statement, the US Department of Agriculture said that the US and Mexico reached an understanding regarding the water issue as part of the 1944 Water Treaty.“The United States and Mexico reached an understanding to meet the current water obligations of American farmers and ranchers and for Mexico to repay the water deficit in Texas as part of the 1944 Water Treaty. This agreement extends to the current cycle and the previous cycle’s water deficit,” the department said in a statement.“President Trump continues to put American farmers first and is finally holding our international partners accountable to their obligations and commitments. Once again, America is being treated fairly,” US Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins said in a statement. “Farmers across South Texas have been reeling from the uncertainty caused by the lack of water. Now they can expect the resources promised to them, thanks to President Trump’s leadership. I thank Mexico for their willingness to abide by the treaty and return to good standing with their past obligations.”She further added, “Mexico has delivered more water in the last year than in the previous four years combined. Although this is a step in the right direction, President Trump has been very clear: if Mexico continues to violate its commitments, the United States reserves the right and will impose 5% tariffs on Mexican products.”Trump alleged that the violation was “hurting our beautiful Texas crops and livestock”. Giving a deadline of December 31, Trump warned his neighbouring nation of imposing additional tariffs if 200,000 acre-feet of water is not released by them. He added that Mexico has an “obligation” to fix the issue.Under the ‘Treaty on the utilization of waters of the Colorado and Tijuana Rivers and of the Rio Grande’, which was signed in 1944 betwee the two neighbours, Mexico is required to send 1.75 million acre-feet of water to the US from the Rio Grande through a network of interconnected dams and reservoirs every five years, which is used to support agricultural activities in Texas and other US bordering states.“With today’s understanding, Mexico has agreed to release 202,000-acre feet of water to the United States with deliveries expected to begin the week of December 15, 2025. Timely repayment of the outstanding deficit from the previous water cycle is understood by Mexico. The United States and Mexico are in negotiations to finalize a plan by the end of January 2026,” the Department of Agriculture stated.

US President Donald Trump shrugged off the new photos released from Jeffrey Epstein files by House Democrats on Friday (Dec 12). The pictures also included Trump with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died of an apparent suicide in prison during his trial. This comes after the House Oversight Committee released dozens of images amid the 95,000 files, with many featuring Epstein with several prominent figures, including the US president. The release of new documents and photos come after Trump signed a bill last month ordering the public release of files regarding the Epstein case.“I mean, everybody knew this man. He was all over, actually,” Trump said on Friday. “I haven’t seen it, but, I mean, everybody knew this man. He was all over Palm Beach. He has photos with everybody. I mean, there are hundreds and hundreds of people that have photos with him. So that’s no big deal. I know nothing about.”Trump can be seen in three of the undated images released by the Democrats. In two of the photos, he is seen with women with redacted identities. The third picture shows the US president with Epstein. In another image, Trump’s face can be seen on a bunch condom with the caption, “I’m HUUUUGE,” and a sign reading “Trump condom $4.50.”Posting the images on X, Oversight Democrats wrote, “Oversight Dems received 95,000 new photos from Jeffrey Epstein's estate. These disturbing images raise even more questions about Epstein and his relationships with some of the most powerful men in the world. Time to end this White House cover-up. Release the files!”The images showed former president Bill Clinton, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, movie producer Woody Allen, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, royal family member Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, professor Alan Dershowitz, VirginGroup founder Richard Branson, Steve Bannon, and others.Meanwhile, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson slammed House Democrats for “selectively releasing cherry-picked photos.”While the images released do not implicate any individuals in Epstein’s criminal activities, they offer insights into the convicted financier’s personal life and relationships. Trump has repeatedly said that he had distanced himself from the sex offender in the 2000s.
