Iran 'about to surrender': Trump claimed in G7 call as US death toll mounts

The Pentagon, in a briefing earlier this week, revealed a shocking estimate of what President Donald Trump's war on Iran is costing the United States. According to reports, America spent at least US $11.3 billion over the first week of the war that started on February 28, with the US and Israel launching "pre-emptive" strikes against Iran under Operation Epic Fury and Operation Lion's Roar, respectively. A report claims Trump’s advisers urged him to outline an exit plan for the Iran war and adopt stronger messaging to maintain public support. The White House dismissed the report as false, saying Operation Epic Fury will continue until the president decides the war’s objectives are achieved.

Trump's wild Tomahawk theory
Just a day earlier, POTUS Trump floated a theory that Iran itself possesses Tomahawk cruise missiles suspected in the attack. Speaking at his Doral resort in Florida, Trump denied US responsibility for the Feb 28 tragedy at the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ elementary school in Minab. He suggested that the missile could have been used by another nation, including Iran, while adding that the incident was still under investigation. "Tomahawk, which is one of the most powerful weapons around, is sold and used by other countries," said Trump.“And whether it's Iran, who also has some Tomahawks, they wish they had more, but, whether it's Iran or somebody else, the fact that a Tomahawk -- a Tomahawk is very generic, it's sold to other countries. But that's being investigated right now,” he said. The attack reportedly killed at least 175 people, most of them aged 7 to 12 years. US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (Feb 24) delivered his address at the State of the Union of his second term to a joint session of Congress in the House Chamber of the United States Capitol. During his 1-hour 48-minute-long speech, the Republican leader touted the “golden age” of America as he talked about several topics, ranging from the crackdown on drug smuggling in the US and illegal immigrants, low mortgage rates, and a massive surge in investments.Trump urged Congress to pass the ‘Delilah law’ that bars illegal immigrants from getting commercial driver’s licences, and repeat US policy will not allow Iran to pursue ‘sinister ambitions’ of nuclear weapons. He also did not forget to slam his predecessor, Joe Biden, and the Democrats in the longest State of the Union speech. The US president even reiterated his claims on ending eight so-called wars during his term in office and went as far as suggesting a third term. However, he steer cleared of pressing issues that matter to millions of Americans. Also read | Did Trump end 8 conflicts in 10 months? The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Saturday (Feb 14) sent a letter to Congress with hundreds of names mentioned in the documents related to investigations into late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The list included names of high-profile “government officials and politically exposed persons”, including US President Donald Trump, named in the files. The letter also outlined its justifications for the redactions made in the files in the six-page letter sent to the Senate and House Judiciary committees. The letter, which was first reported by Politico, notes that the names appeared in a “wide variety of contexts,” from individuals who directly emailed with Epstein or his associate Ghislaine Maxwell to those who had no interaction with the sex offender but were mentioned in the documents. The letter does not specify which name appeared in what context.
Who is named in letter?
The names in the letter included Trump, Vice President JD Vance, former president Barack Obama, former president Joe Biden, and former vice president Kamala Hariss. The document also mentioned former US president Bill Clinton, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk among the names.

JUST IN: DOJ sends Hill a letter purporting to fulfill requirement in Epstein Files Transparency Act for an explanation of all redactions from released files.
‘Stop protecting predators’
The Trump administration is facing increased scrutiny for its handling of the investigation into the case related to Epstein, with critics alleging that it has not been transparent in releasing the files.Rep. Ro Khanna has accused the DOJ of “purposefully muddying the waters on who was a predator and who was mentioned in an email.”In a post on X, Kanna wrote, “To have Janis Joplin, who died when Epstein was 17, in the same list as Larry Nassar, who went to prison for the sexual abuse of hundreds of young women and child pornography, with no clarification of how either was mentioned in the files is absurd.”“Release the full files. The DOJ sent Congress a letter listing hundreds of names from Jeffrey Epstein case files, including Donald Trump and other high-profile individuals.

The United States under President Donald Trump is likely to expand its nuclear build-up by deploying more warheads on existing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), and by conducting new underground nuclear tests after the New START treaty, which officially bound nuclear limits between the US and Russia, expired. In the absence of any treaty, Trump has signalled a move towards unconstrained nuclear competition, reportedly directing the Pentagon to prepare for potential underground testing, The New York Times reported. These decisions would reverse nearly 49 years of stricter nuclear restraint by the United States, which had kept its number of warheads steady or reduced the number of weapons deployed on submarines. US President Donald Trump's speech at Davos 2026 on Wednesday (Jan 21) left many of his European listeners uneasy. The antagonistic speech was long, angry, and full of grievances against European leaders and their resistance to the US taking over Greenland by force. The long, rambling speech also offered a small but notable concession. Here are the key takeaways from Trump's Davos speech.
Europe taking advantage of the US?
Speaking to business leaders and government officials in Davos, Trump spent much of his time accusing Europe of taking advantage of the United States. He questioned why his push to take control of Greenland was facing resistance and criticised European leaders over immigration and economic policy. At one point, he even raised doubts about whether NATO would come to America's defence. He, however, failed to mention that the alliance has only ever invoked its collective defence clause once, after the September 11 attacks on the US.
Trump won't use force against Greenland
For European officials hoping to hear a path out of the growing transatlantic rift, there was one line that stood out."I won't use force," Trump said, referring to Greenland. Before this, Trump had refused to rule out using military power to seize the semiautonomous Danish territory. Removing that threat eased some immediate fears.Markets also reacted, turning higher after losses the day before. But Trump did not soften his underlying demand. "This enormous unsecured island is actually part of North America," he said. "That's our territory." He warned that those who opposed him would be remembered. "You can say no and we will remember," he said.
Greenland deal framework and 500% tariff threat
Later in the day, Trump announced what he called a "framework of a future deal" on Greenland after meeting NATO's secretary general. He said planned tariffs on Europe were now off, though he gave no details. "This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America and all NATO Nations," he wrote on Truth Social. When asked if the deal meant his desire to own Greenland was fulfilled, Trump paused before replying, "It's a long-term deal."
Old grudges, new targets
Trump, in his speech, called Denmark "ungrateful," accused it of failing to defend Greenland in World War II, and questioned why the US ever gave the territory back. "Denmark fell to Germany after just six hours of fighting, and was totally unable to defend either itself or Greenland. So the United States was then compelled, and we did it," he claimed."How stupid were we to do that?" said Trump. "But we did it, but we gave it back. But how ungrateful are they now?"He also mocked French President Emmanuel Macron's "beautiful sunglasses", took aim at Switzerland over tariffs, and warned Canada to be more grateful. "Canada gets a lot of freebies from us, by the way. They should be grateful, but they’re not," he said. Directly addressing Canadian PM Mark Carney, he ominously warned, "Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements."Back home, he attacked Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and Democratic lawmaker Ilhan Omar, tying her to what he called cultural decline in the West. "She comes from a country that’s not a country, and she’s telling us how to run America," he said during an extended diatribe against Somalia. He further warned that Omar was "not going to get away with it much longer".Trump tries to humiliate EuropeSeemingly intent on humiliating Europeans into giving him Greenland, Trump recalled wars of the past that needed US intervention and claimed, "Without us right now, you’d all be speaking German and a little Japanese".Slamming the 'ungrateful' nations which he insisted were still reliant on America, he claimed, "Without us, most of the countries don’t even work".
A crowd in disbelief
At first, the packed room laughed politely. By the end, it was mostly silent. Some attendees shook their heads as Trump argued for owning Greenland. Others left early as Trump's rambling speech crossed the one-hour mark. Trump, seemingly felt the need to end his speech, and closing it, casually said: "I'll see you around."
