Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar said he wishes to see former India captain Virat Kohli get a century in his 100th Test appearance for the Indian cricket team this week. Kohli will take the field in his 100th Test for the country when India will lock horns with Sri Lanka in the first Test of the upcoming two-match Test series that gets underway from March 04 (Friday).

Kohli will be playing his 100th Test behind closed doors at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been facing flak from cricket fans for not allowing fans for Kohli's 100th Test. Nonetheless, it will be a monumental achievement for Kohli, who is regarded as one of the best batters in the world at present.

Gavaskar, who is the first Indian to have played 100 Tests for the country, said he hopes Kohli celebrates the occasion with a hundred. Kohli has not scored a hundred across any formats in international cricket since November 2019. Kohli will become the 11th Indian to play 100 Tests after the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev among others.

However, he will be the first Indian to score a century in his 100th Test if he manages to achieve the feat in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali. Overall, only nine batters in the world have managed to score a century in their 100th Test appearance.

"I hope he celebrates his 100th Test with a 100. Not many batsmen have done that. I know Colin Cowdrey, who was probably the first to play 100 Test matches, scored a hundred in his 100th Test. I know Javed Miandad has done it. Alex Stewart has done it," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

The batting legend also recalled his 100th Test as a player and revealed how he could only manage to get 48 runs in the game before clipping a half volley to square leg to be dismissed.

"Lots of batsman have played 100 Tests but did not get a hundred in that Test match. I clipped a half volley to square leg when I was batting on 48. Can you believe it, on 48? Simple catch that was," Gavaskar recalled.

Gavaskar also shared his experience of playing 100 Tests for India and said it gives the player a sense of achievement as this is a moment they have dreamt of since they started playing cricket at a very young age. Gavaskar also lauded Kohli for his achievements across all formats of the game.

"Well, I can only say that it is going to be a sense of achievement. When you start playing cricket as a school kid, you want to play for India and hoping that you play for India for a certain while and suddenly you know, success comes to you and then you go on from year to year and then the 100th Test comes to you," said the legendary cricketer.

"It's a very special feeling. And look at what he has achieved in all formats of the game, not just Test cricket, where he has been fabulous," he added.

Hope Virat Kohli celebrates his 100th Test milestone with a century against Sri Lanka: Sunil Gavaskar

Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has reacted to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s decision to conduct Virat Kohli's 100th Test match for India behind closed doors in Mohali. The first Test of the upcoming two-match Test series between India and Sri Lanka in Mohali will be Kohli's 100th for the national side.

The first Test between the two sides is scheduled to get underway from March 04. While it will be a special occasion for Kohli, who is regarded as one of the best batters of the present era, BCCI's decision to not allow fans for the game has invited criticism from fans, who believe Kohli deserved to play his 100th Test in front of a crowd in Mohali.

Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) treasurer RP Singla on Saturday confirmed that fans will not be allowed inside the stadium for Kohli's milestone Test appearance. He informed that the decision was taken after a directive from the BCCI. While fans had expected better arrangements for Kohli's 100th Test, the former India captain will now make his 100th appearance in whites behind closed doors.

Gavaskar said it was disappointing to not have fans in the stadium for Kohli's 100th Test for India but insisted that the decision by the BCCI was taken in greater interest considering the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in and around the city.

"Any game that you play, you want the crowd to be there. India has played without any crowds in recent times. Any performer, be it an actor, be it a cricketer, wants to play in front of the crowd. The 100th Test is very very special. Disappointing that there is going to be no crowd, but I think the decision has been taken in the greater interest. The cases have increased in and around Mohali, where the match is going to be played," Sunil Gavaskar told Sports Today.

While a number of series and matches have been played behind closed doors in the last couple of years, BCCI's decision of conducting Kohli's 100th Test without fans has not gone down well with the BCCI as the recently-concluded T20I series between India and Sri Lanka was played in front of fans in Lucknow and Dharamshala.

Fans were also allowed inside the stadium during the T20I series between India and West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Disappointing that Virat Kohli's 100th Test will be played behind closed doors: Sunil Gavaskar

India demolished Sri Lanka in the just-concluded three T20Is at home. Rohit Sharma-led Indian team inflicted a whitewash over the hapless Dasun Shanaka-led Islanders to continue their winning streak in the format, which is now joint-most along with Afghanistan (12).

In the absence of former captain Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, white-ball vice-captain KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Md Shami, etc., Indian youngsters such as Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Avesh Khan made a mark to finish off the series with a 3-0 scoreline. Iyer was the most outstanding performer for the national side, ending with scores of 57* (28), 74* (44) and 73* (45) along with remaining unbeaten throughout the course of the series.

Suryakumar, the way he has been batting, he is got to be included. It is just the plus, plus as far as the team is concerned.

“There are so many options. And it allows you to go in with pure bowlers and not bowlers who can bat. With a top-batting line-up, you can can go in with someone like Mohammed Siraj or Avesh Khan, who is not known as a batsman. You might think in terms of all-out attack,” he further said.

Virat Kohli can't be replaced: Gavaskar on in-form Shreyas Iyer's batting position for Team India in T20Is

Team India will start a new era in Tests when they host Sri Lanka in a two-match series, starting on March 04 in Mohali. The forthcoming Tests will see the start of Rohit Sharma's captaincy in whites whereas a lot of youngsters will have the onus with four experienced campaigners dropped.

Recently, the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee dropped as many as four senior players, such as Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma and wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha. With no Pujara, Hanuma Vihari, Shubman Gill or Shreyas Iyer are expected to take the No. 3 slot. However, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar feels former captain Virat Kohli should take over the important slot.

If not Kohli, the cricketer-turned-commentator recommended Vihari's name for No. 3. "Otherwise, you can look at Hanuma Vihari, who has done well in South Africa and showed a lot of courage,” added Gavaskar.

Best batsman bats there: With no Pujara, Gavaskar wants star Indian player to take No. 3 spot in Tests

India demolished West Indies in the three T20Is at home. Taking an unassailable lead heading into the final encounter, Rohit Sharma-led Indian team were asked to bat first in the final T20I. After being at a tricky position, at 61-3, the Men in Blue posted a daunting 184-5 courtesy of an impressive 91-run fifth-wicket stand between Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer.

Both SKY and Iyer came together with the score reading 93-4 in 13.5 overs. The duo's stand flourished as the rest of the innings progressed with their strokeplay, taking India to a competitive score. In reply, Nicholas Pooran's 61 and cameos from Romario Shepherd and Rovman Powell weren't enough for Kieron Pollard's West Indies; losing by 17 runs.

Following the series, SKY's stature continues to rise in Indian cricket. He has fulfilled various roles -- coming out to bat at different positions -- and looks pretty much in contention for the T20 World Cup squad, as per Little Master Sunil Gavaskar.

So it is not like he is playing international cricket for a long time. Venkatesh too came in only a couple of months back."

He's making a case for inclusion for T20 World Cup: Sunil Gavaskar impressed with India's star batter

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar has backed Chetan Sharma-led national selection panel's decision to appoint Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian Test team. Rohit will replace Virat Kohli as the new skipper of the Indian team in the longest format and will take charge for the first time in the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka at home.

Rohit had earlier replaced Kohli as India's captain in T20Is and ODIs last year and has now become the country's leader across all formats of the game. Gavaskar said he is not at all surprised by the selectors' decision as Rohit was the obvious choice for captaincy if his fitness and workload is not an issue going forward.

"The guy who is a certainty in all three formats – when the selection committee sits down and think of who are the certainties, then Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s names will come up. And between them, Kohli is not doing captaincy, so it had to be Rohit Sharma. There was no surprise there," Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.

"The way he has handled the team. The way players are getting clarity. I won’t say there wasn’t clarity earlier. That would be wrong to say as I was not in the dressing room, so I don’t know. But from the way he speaks, it seems like the players know their roles. And they know what the team expects from them and what the captain expects from them," added the batting legend.

While Rohit is the most successful captain in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) having led Mumbai Indians to a record five titles, he has also proven his leadership credentials in international cricket. He has been exceptional for India as captain and has also led the team to some memorable wins.

Gavaskar, who had himself suggested Rishabh Pant's name as a potential replacement for Kohli as the new Test captain of the Indian team, said his statement was keeping Rohit's fitness in mind. However, the former India captain insisted nobody else could have been considered if Rohit can remain totally fit going forward.

"Rishabh Pant’s name had come up because we didn’t know about Rohit Sharma’s fitness. But if he is completely fit, no one else can be the captain for all three formats. It was the correct decision," said Gavaskar.

The IPL 2022 mega auction lived upto expectations. As many as 590 players went under the hammer as many marquee players attained whopping deals whereas some big players also went unsold. Talking about Harshal Patel, the 31-year-old fast-bowling all-rounder wasn't retained by the Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Harshal ended with 32 wickets -- joined most scalps in a season along with Dwayne Bravo -- and the Purple Cap in the IPL 2021 edition. However, the death-over specialist was brought back by the Bengaluru-based franchise for a whopping INR 107.5 million (INR 10.75 crore). Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has lauded Harshal and feels he deserves every penny earned at the mega auction.

"Look he deserves every penny, every rupee that he’s earned at the auction. He put in a fabulous performance last year. And the best part about Harshal Patel is how he has reinvented himself. Now, he is the bowler that batters do not want to face because they don’t know what he is going to bowl," Gavaskar said to Star Sports.

He further asserted, “He has got a very good yorker. He has got a slower bouncer. He has got a delivery that skids along quite nicely so he has got the works and he knows when to use it because of the experience he has had playing in the IPL for the last few years. He has only got better every year."

He deserves every penny earned at IPL mega auction: Sunil Gavaskar lavishes huge praise on Indian star

Punjab Kings (PBKS) were one of the franchises who headed into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction looking to rope in a potential captaincy candidate ahead of the new season. KL Rahul parted ways with Punjab Kings last year to join Lucknow Super Giants as their new captain, leaving his former franchise with the tough task of finding a new captain for the team.

Punjab had the largest purse heading into the auction and the franchise was able to rope in some quality Indian and overseas players to form a strong squad at the end. Punjab Kings picked up a total of 23 players at the IPL 2022 mega auction, including the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Kagiso Rabada and Liam Livingstone among others.

While many believe Dhawan is an ideal captaincy candidate for the Punjab Kings, former India captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has urged the franchise to look at the future while appointing their next captain. Giving his take on the captaincy debate, Gavaskar said Mayank Agarwal should be handed over the reins as he is 31 and has many years of cricket left in him at the top level, unlike Dhawan, who is 36 and might not be a long-term option for captaincy.

Lauding Mayank, Gavaskar said the right-hand batter is a hard-working athlete and has always been a team man. The batting legend also believes Mayank can be a potential candidate to lead India in the future if he can deliver consistent performances with the bat.

He is always ready to hop on to the field, even when he isn't in the XI," Gavaskar told Sports Today.

"So every aspect I think, Mayank Agarwal is somebody Punjab Kings should look as captain. And who knows, he could be considered in the future for national captaincy if he is consistent with his performances," he added.

Not Shikhar Dhawan! Sunil Gavaskar names Indian star who should captain Punjab Kings in IPL 2022

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has picked the next captain for the Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the IPL 2022 edition. After the two-day mega auction was held in Bengaluru, RCB have picked a strong squad and have quite a few captaincy options to choose from.

The Bengaluru-based franchise have Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis (roped in for INR 70 million) and Dinesh Karthik, who has also led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) before, as the possible candidates who can succeed Kohli as the RCB skipper for IPL 2022. Amongst them, Gavaskar has named Maxwell as the ideal candidate.

For the unversed, Maxwell was part of RCB's IPL 2021 run, amassing 513 runs at 42.75 along with 6 half-centuries. He was RCB's highest run-getter in last year's edition. Thus, the Aussie all-rounder was one of the three retentions from the franchise, at INR 110 million.

Gavaskar told Sports Tak, "I think if Glenn Maxwell is given the responsibility then a different kind of Maxwell will be seen in IPL. Last year he batted brilliantly probably keeping the mega auction in mind, but he was retained after that, which was good, I guess, for him.”

"We have often seen that players who bat well but score 30-40 runs quickly and get out without getting the job done- especially when suppose the team requires 70 or 80 runs more. But when these same players are given a responsibility then they played well showing better shot selection. So if Maxwell is given the captaincy, he will score more and play better," he said.

After the mega auction, Mike Hesson, Director of Cricket Operations at RCB, opened up on the captaincy debate and said, "We have not had that discussion yet. So we are happy with the group, we will make a decision regarding captaincy after the auction."

Not Faf du Plessis! Sunil Gavaskar picks Virat Kohli's successor at RCB for IPL 2022

The IPL 2022 mega auction was a star-studded event, which took place on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. As many as 590 players went under the hammer. The ten IPL franchises put on their thinking caps and displayed their smart buying skills ahead of the forthcoming IPL 2022 edition, set to be held in India in March-May.

While a number of star players got whopping deals, some big names in T20 cricket went unsold. Suresh Raina, Shakib Al Hasan, Eoin Morgan, Aaron Finch, Steve Smith, Adil Rashid, etc. featured in the unsold list after the end of auction proceedings. Talking about Raina, known as Mr. IPL, the swashbuckling left-hander's name failed to draw a single bid despite his resounding success in the tournament.

Raina has amassed 5,528 runs -- fourth-highest overall -- in IPL history and has been a vital cog of MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He was part of the Yellow Army's title runs in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021. However, he finished with only 161 runs in the previous edition, at an average of 17.77. Thus, CSK didn't retain him and also didn't bid for him whereas no other franchise showed interest in him.

Explaining the reason for Raina's possible snub at the IPL 2022 mega auction, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar told on Sports Tak, "For Raina I was definitely surprised. He is left-handed, does off-spin bowling, and is experienced. In the last season, in the Dubai pitches, where there is a lot of bounce, he did look a little scared and this why I feel people must have felt that even in India we will have fast bowlers and so may be he wasn't picked for that reason. But only the franchises could tell us why they had this feeling about him."

On the other hand, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan opined on Raina's omission and told on the franchise's YouTube channel, "Raina has been one of the most consistent performers for CSK for the last 12 years. 'He did look a little scared' - Gavaskar explains why Suresh Raina went unsold at IPL 2022 mega auction

Ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has picked a star Indian batter who he feels will become one of the top earners at the mega event. A total of 600 players will be going under the hammer in the two-day mega auction ahead of the new season of the IPL.

Gavaskar believes star India batter Shreyas Iyer will be one the most expensive pick at the IPL 2022 mega auction. There are a number of IPL franchises that will be looking for a potential captaincy candidate and Iyer is expected to be in demand given his leadership credentials.

Iyer had led Delhi Capitals for two seasons and led them to their first final in the 2020 season. He was replaced by Rishabh Pant as the captain of the side after a shoulder injury last year and decided to part ways with the franchises. Apart from his leadership qualities, Iyer has also been in top form with the bat and notched up a brilliant 80-run knock in the third and final ODI between India and West Indies on Friday (February 2).

Gavaskar believes Iyer's splendid knock in the third ODI will help the former Delhi Capitals captain 'shake the bank' at the IPL 2022 mega auction.

"He definitely is going to be one of the most sought-after players. If he’d got a hundred, with him, it’s just a question of breaking the bank. With an 80, he will shake the bank," said the batting legend.

Gavaskar's comments came after Iyer showed remarkable grit and resilience in his 80-run knock against West Indies to bail India out of trouble in the third ODI. He walked in to bat at no.4 when India were 42/3 inside ten overs. Iyer combined with Rishabh Pant (56) to add 110 runs for the fourth wicket to help India post 265 runs on the board.

India went on to clinch the game comfortably by 96 runs after bundling out West Indies for 169 runs. Apart from Iyer, the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, R Ashwin, Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur will be Indian players who will be much sought after at the IPL 2022 mega auction.

'He will shake the bank': Sunil Gavaskar picks Indian star who can be one of top earners at IPL mega auction

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes Virat Kohli is not out of form but luck has evaded him in the ongoing ODI series against West Indies at home. Kohli's form is under the scanner after his poor outings in the first two ODIs of the three-match series against Kieron Pollard's men.

Kohli, who has not enjoyed the best of form in the past couple of years and is yet to bring an end to his century drought since 2019, had a forgetful tour of South Africa recently. Kohli's struggles have continued in the ongoing ODIs against West Indies as he looks to get back among the runs.

Amid questions over his form, Gavaskar has lent support to Kohli and has backed him to bounce back. The batting legend believes every batter needs a bit of luck to score big runs and Kohli seems to have run out of luck at the moment.

"Luck (What is Kohli missing?). Every batter needs a bit of luck. Every batter needs a situation where he plays and misses an edge. Every batter needs a situation where he edges the ball and the catch is dropped or the ball falls short of the fielder," Gavaskar said on Star Sports ahead of the third and final ODI of the series between India and West Indies.

Kohli was dismissed after scoring just 8 runs off 3 balls in the first ODI against West Indies before managing a 30-ball 18 in the second ODI on Wednesday. The former India captain will be eager to bounce back and get a big knock under his belt in the third ODI on Friday (February 11).

Reacting to Kohli's criticism after his poor show against West Indies, Gavaskar said people should not forget that he had scored fifties in India's recently-concluded tour of South Africa. With back-to-back wins in the first two ODIs, India have already clinched the three-match series against West Indies and will be aiming for a clean sweep when they lock horns with the visitors on Friday.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes Virat Kohli is not out of form but luck has evaded him in the ongoing ODI series against West Indies at home. Kohli's form is under the scanner after his poor outings in the first two ODIs of the three-match series against Kieron Pollard's men.

'Every batter needs a bit of luck': Sunil Gavaskar decodes Virat Kohli's struggles amid lean patch for India

Rohit Sharma-led Team India lost the toss in the second and penultimate ODI, versus West Indies, at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on Wednesday (February 8). Being asked to bat first, Rohit was accompanied by Rishabh Pant at the top, surprising many.

India dropped Ishan Kishan, with the return of vice-captain KL Rahul in the side, but surprised many with Pant coming out to bat with Rohit. Pant usually bats at No. 4, or lower down the order, for the Men in Blue. With Shikhar Dhawan not being available for selection after recovering from Covid-19, Indian team management dropped Ishan to make way for Rahul -- who now bats at No. 5 -- and promoted Pant up the order.

Reacting to India's experiment with Pant as an opener, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports on-air, "The first 10 overs is where India have been a bit slow in the past. They are looking to take advantage of the field restrictions in the first 10 overs. They are clearly looking to score maybe 60-70. That is what they are looking for. This is an experiment, make no mistake. If it works, that is the template that they will like to carry forward as they go on to the World Cup in India next year."

"It's something that will certainly look at. What it does also, if India are batting first, it will give him some time to recover. If he gets out in the 30th or 40th over, having done his job, he will get a little bit of break when he comes out to keep wickets."

Gavaskar further asserted, "It's may also they (the team management) is looking to give him a sense of responsibility at the top of the order. We have seen him charge down the pitch and get out in the past. Sending him up the order is a way of maybe telling him, listen we expect more runs from him. We will find out how it all pans out."

"Who is going to be the finisher? I was thinking maybe Pant will get that role with the license to throw his bat around at the end when he comes into bat in the last 10-15 overs, provided the team has got off a very good start," he added.

Talking about the match, Rohit & Co. didn't get off to a good start by losing three quick wickets. The home side's lower order have a lot riding on themselves to take the team score beyond 250.

Following the 2019 ODI World Cup, rift rumours between then skipper Virat Kohli and his white-ball deputy Rohit Sharma intensified. Kohli, however, rubbished all such claims before India's tour of West Indies in August, 2019.

The rift rumours died down for a bit after a few months before it again hit the headlines in early December, 2021. After Rohit took over from Virat as the limited-overs captain, many speculated that all isn't well between the two superstar cricketers. Nonetheless, Kohli once again shunned all such claims in his explosive presser, on December 15, before Team India's trip to South Africa.

After the India-West Indies three-match ODI series opener, held in Ahmedabad on Sunday (February 6), Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has slammed all such speculations seeing Rohit-Kohli's on-field chemistry versus Kieron Pollard & Co. Both the senior cricketers were seen discussing strategies and helping each other out in taking DRS calls.

Thus, Gavaskar told Star Sports after India's six-wicket win over the Windies, “Why wouldn't they be getting along? They are playing for India. All these talks that you generally hear about two players not gelling and etc. are all speculations. According to reliable sources or allegedly or reportedly. Nobody actually tells you and this has been happening for a years. And these guys don't even bother about it. You wouldn't even bother about these kind of speculations because you yourself know what the truth is. And so there is nothing."

“There are often speculations that the captain who is now a player in the team will not want the new captain to succeed. This is nonsense. Because if he doesn't score runs or a bowler doesn't pick wickets then he is going to be out of the team. He has already lost the captaincy or opted out of captaincy, now you don't contribute with the bat or ball then you are going to be out of the team. So all these talks are mere speculations from people who have nothing better to do and are trying and creating stories. So don't you worry. Today Kohli didn't get runs but he will get runs whether he is playing under Rohit Sharma or any other captain.”

This has been happening for years: Sunil Gavaskar rubbishes rift rumours between Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli

Rohit Sharma enjoyed a brilliant game as captain of the Indian team after making his comeback from a hamstring injury, in the first ODI against West Indies on Sunday. It was Rohit's first ODI as the full-time captain of the Indian team and he led from the front on the field. The Hitman could not have hoped for a better start as India defeated West Indies by 6 wickets in the series-opener of the three-match rubber.

Rohit won the toss and opted to bowl first, inviting West Indies to bat in the first ODI. The bowlers got the hosts off to a brilliant start as West Indies were reduced to 79/7 inside just 23 overs. While the bowlers produced an exceptional performance, they also needed some help from the Decision Review System (DRS).

Skipper Rohit reviewed as many as three not-out decisions by the on-field umpires during the West Indies innings and ended up getting all of them right. All three decisions were overturned by the third umpire as India had a field day in terms of using the DRS accurately.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was left impressed by India's brilliant usage of the DRS and came up with an interesting suggestion. Gavaskar said it was time to replace 'Dhoni Review System' - a famous term used by the commentators and fans for the DRS, referring to former India captain MS Dhoni's ability to get reviews right more often than not.

Gavaskar suggested that now that Rohit is also making brilliant DRS calls, the term 'Dhoni Review System' can be replaced by 'Definitely Rohit System'. "Rohit Sharma got those reviews spot on. Earlier when Dhoni used to get more right than wrong, it was called as Dhoni Review System. Now you can term it as ‘Definitely Rohit System’," Gavaskar said while commentating during the game.

Later, speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said he used to use the term 'Dhoni Review System' for former skipper Dhoni when he was part of the Indian team. However, he would now like to call it Rohit's system after witnessing the current Indian skipper's success rate with the DRS.

“When Dhoni was there I used to call it the Dhoni Referral System. And I mentioned it in commentary that you can now call it the Rohit system because he is getting it absolutely right so far,” said Gavaskar.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar combined to pick up seven wickets between them and derail West Indies's innings. The visitors were bundled out for a paltry 176 runs and lost the game with as many as 22 overs to spare as India chased down the target comfortably.

India got off to a good start in the run-chase as skipper Rohit slammed a brilliant half-century (60 off 51 balls) and added an 84-run stand for the first wicket with Ishan Kishan (28). The hosts did lose a few quick wickets after Rohit's departure but Suryakumar Yadav (34) and Deepak Hooda (26) added an unbeaten stand of 62 runs for the 5th wicket to take India over the line comfortably.

Definitely Rohit System: Sunil Gavaskar renames 'Dhoni Review System' after India's DRS success vs Windies

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has cast doubt on the future of Team India's senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The right-arm fast bowler has not been at his best for the last couple of years and has struggled with form and fitness. With intense competition for a slot in the pace attack and many young pacers waiting in the wings, Bhuvneshwar's spot in the Indian team has been questioned by many.

India have a number of fast-bowling talents, who can be a great fit in both Tests and limited-overs cricket with the likes of Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, T Natarajan, Chetan Sakariya and others among the options who can be looked at. With form not being on Bhuvneshwar's side, Gavaskar believes the future looks bleak for the senior fast bowler.

Bhuvneshwar was once one of India's first-choice fast bowlers across formats and has been a prolific wicket-taker. However, in the last few years, he has lost a bit of pace and has also not been effective in the death overs. Gavaskar said he is not sure of what the future holds for Bhuvneshwar while suggesting that he should be given a break.

The former India captain wants youngsters to get opportunities while Bhuvneshwar can go back and work on his basics to bounce back stronger. Gavaskar also suggested Deepak Chahar can be an ideal replacement for Bhuvneshwar in the Indian team.

“The one name that comes to my mind is Bhuvneshwar Kumar. I am not even sure what kind of a future he has anymore. He has lost out on pace, the accuracy he had at the start where he was getting the ball to move and get the wickets and then again towards the end over, the way he was coming and bowling, that has probably deserted him and it’s time for him to go back to the basics and work hard. That’s the one name that comes to mind,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.

“I think it’s time to look maybe at Deepak Chahar now. Younger man, who is pretty much a similar bowler, swings it both ways and bat handily down the order," he added.

Bhuvneshwar's career has gone downhill ever since his injury during the 2019 ODI World Cup. He has not been on top of his game since then and had picked up another injury during IPL 2020. While he has already lost his place in Tests, he is unlikely to be picked in India's ODI squad again after a disastrous outing against South Africa in the recently-concluded three-match series.

Bhuvneshwar, however, has been named in India's T20I squad for the upcoming home series against West Indies. He was snubbed from the ODI squad for the three-match series against Kieron Pollard-led side.

'He has lost out on pace, accuracy': Sunil Gavaskar casts doubt on future of Team India pacer

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has struggled to find his form for India for quite a while now as his rough patch continues in international cricket. In the ongoing ODI series between India and South Africa, Bhuvneshwar has remained wicket-less in the first two matches and has been taken for plenty of runs by the South African batters.

The senior pacer's form is concerning for the Indian team as he has been failing to pick wickets at regular intervals in white-ball cricket and is no more the death-over specialist that he used to be during his peak years for India. Bhuvneshwar has so far bowled 18 overs in the first two matches against South Africa and has conceded 131 runs without taking a wicket.

After losing the series-opener of the three-match ODI series by 31 runs, India lost the must-win second ODI against South Africa by 7 wickets on Saturday to go 2-0 down and concede the series. Speaking about India's disappointing show in the series so far, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar said India need to tweak their bowling attack in white-ball cricket going forward.

Gavaskar has urged the Indian team to look beyond Bhuvneshwar despite his experience and wants the management to back someone like Deepak Chahar, who can take the senior pacer's spot in the squad. Gavaskar lamented Bhuvneshwar's poor form in the last couple of years and suggested it's time to replace him with Chahar.

"Bhuvi has been a tremendous servant of Indian cricket but in the last year or so, even in franchise level T20 cricket, he has been expensive. Not so much at the start of the innings but towards the end. He used to bowl those brilliant yorkers and slower deliveries, but those are not working anymore," Gavaskar told Sports Today.

"That can happen, the opposition is studying you all the time and they will know how to be prepared for it. So maybe it is time to look at somebody else.

"I think it's time to look at Deepak Chahar now. He is younger, pretty much the same kind of bowler and bats handily down the order," he added.

India are expected to make some changes in the playing XI and give game time to the likes of Chahar, Ruturaj Gaikwad and others in the third and final ODI of the ongoing series against South Africa on Sunday (January 23). It remains to be seen if India will stick with Bhuvneshwar or replace him with someone like Chahar in the playing XI.

It remains to be seen if India will stick with Bhuvneshwar or replace him with someone like Chahar in the playing XI.

'Time to look at somebody else': Sunil Gavaskar suggests Bhuvneshwar Kumar's replacement for Team India

India are one of the strongest teams in international cricket at present and have enjoyed tremendous success across all three formats over the last few years. While they have been dominant both at home and overseas in bilateral cricket, the Indian team has failed to go the distance in major ICC tournaments.

India last won a major ICC trophy under former captain MS Dhoni in 2013 and have since failed to bring an end to their ICC trophy drought despite coming close on several occasions. India reached the final of the 2014 T20 World Cup where they lost against Sri Lanka before losing in the semi-finals of both the 2015 ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup in 2016.

India came closer than ever to bringing an end to the drought when they reached the final of the Champions Trophy in 2017 under Virat Kohli's captaincy. However, the Men in Blue lost to arch-rivals Pakistan before suffering a heartbreaking defeat in the semi-final of the 2019 ODI World Cup against New Zealand.

India failed to qualify for the knockout stages in the T20 World Cup 2021 last year and also lost the final of the World Test Championship against New Zealand last year. India have not won an ICC trophy for almost nine years now as the team continues to aim to bring an end to the long-standing drought.

Recently, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar explained the reason behind lack of success in ICC tournaments for India. The former India captain feels the lack of all-rounders has cost India in big tournaments. He cited the examples of how all great Indian teams in the past have had batters in the middle-order, who could also be handy with the ball in their hands.

Gavaskar cited the examples of the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina, who batted extremely well in the middle-order and also were brilliant as part-time bowlers for captain Dhoni. Gavaskar feels the current Indian team lacks such versatile all-rounders which is the reason behind their failures in big tournaments.

"There is only one reason why this team has been left disappointed in ICC tournaments (ODI and T20I). If you look at the teams that won the 1983 and 2011 World Cups or even the 1985 World Championship of Cricket-winning side, they were all full of outstanding all-rounders," Gavaskar told AajTak.

"There were many batters who could bowl and the bowlers could bat. The numbers 6,7 and 8 requires all-rounders which all these victorious teams had. The likes of Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina could bowl and bat very well.

"This is the one shortcoming that the Indian team has over the past two or three years, as a result of which the captain has not had many options and the team has lacked flexibility," the former India captain added.

India will get another shot at redemption when they take part in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later this year. The Indian team has been placed in Pool 2 with Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa. The Men in Blue will once again open their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan.

'There is only one reason': Sunil Gavaskar explains why India haven't won an ICC trophy since 2013

India and South Africa are currently involved in the three-match ODI series following the conclusion of the riveting three Tests, in the rainbow nation. During the Test series finale at Newlands, Cape Town, Virat Kohli-led India had set a tricky 212-run target for the Dean Elgar-led home side on Day 3.

During the final session of the third day's play, Kohli-led India had dismissed Aiden Markram and were aiming to see the back of Elgar, SA's mainstay with the bat. During the fag end of Day 3, Elgar survived a very close lbw call off R Ashwin's bowling.

After being given out initially by the on-field umpire, the SA captain took the decision upstairs. The replays suggested that the ball had hit the batter below the knee whereas the hawk-eye showed that the ball was going above the stumps. Hence, the left-hander managed to survive as Indian players expressed their frustration without mincing their words.

Captain Kohli said on the stump-mic, "Focus on your team as well and not just the opposition, trying to catch people all the time." On the other hand, Ashwin and vice-captain KL Rahul also lashed out at the host broadcasters, SuperSport, for favouring the home team.

Gavaskar added, "Tempers are lost on a sporting arena. You see any sports – whether it is football, cricket or any other sport – tempers are lost. I don’t think they were trying to insinuate something But if you look at it, how would we Indians feel if an overseas team captain did this went to the stump mic and say something to the television channel covering the series. We wouldn’t accept it."

What if overseas team captain did it? Gavaskar opines on Kohli's stump mic-rant, feels it was 'avoidable'

After Virat Kohli's surprising decision to step down as the Test captain of the Indian cricket team, the search for India's next Test skipper has begun. While limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma is favourite to take over as the leader of the red-ball team as well, not everyone is in favour of the move.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes Rohit is not an ideal successor to Kohli considering his excessive workload and fitness issues in recent times. Rohit has been dealing with injuries consistently over the last few years and had missed the recently-concluded Test series against South Africa due to a hamstring issue.

He is also set to miss the entire upcoming three-match ODI series against the Proteas with KL Rahul leading India in his absence. Gavaskar feels India need to look at someone young and fit who can be available for selection at all times.

"The problem with Rohit is that he has fitness issues. So you need a player who remains fit and is available for all matches. If you remember, Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews had the same issue with a hamstring. And with that, when you try to run fast or take a quick single, the injury resurfaces," Gavaskar said on Sports Tak as he explained why Rohit should not be made India's new Test skipper.

"If that is to happen, you may be forced to name someone else captain. So it's better to pick a player who instead has external injuries. But with Rohit, this cycle of picking up regular injuries is why I am doubtful about him. This is why I feel that only a player who features in all formats should be made captain," he added.

Rohit is not the only contender for the India Test captain job as the likes of KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant are also in the fray. Rahul, who had replaced injured Rohit as the vice-captain during the South Africa Test series, had led India in the second Test after Kohli missed the game due to a back spasm.

On Tuesday (January 18), during the pre-match press conference ahead of the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, Rahul was asked about potentially taking over as the new captain of the Test team. The star batter said it will be a huge honour to lead the national team in the longest format.

"It’ll be an honour if chosen to lead the team. It’s a very exciting prospect and I will try to lead to the best of my abilities. It will be a huge responsibility," said Rahul.

Sunil Gavaskar explains why India should not appoint Rohit Sharma as next Test captain after Virat Kohli

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh recently gave his take on Sunil Gavaskar backing Rishabh Pant to take over as the new Test captain of the Indian cricket team after Virat Kohli. Kohli stepped down as the Test captain of the Indian team on Saturday (January 15) following the side's 2-1 defeat in the recently-concluded three-match Test series against South Africa.

Kohli-led India came close to winning their maiden Test series in South Africa when they got the better of the Proteas comfortably in the series-opener in Centurion. However, they lost the next two matches in a row to concede the series 2-1 and were denied a historic series win on South Africa soil.

A day after India's seven-wicket defeat in the third Test in Cape Town, Kohli dropped the captaincy bomb on social media and announced he will no more be leading the Indian team in the longest format. Following Kohli's resignation, the legendary Gavaskar suggested Pant could be an ideal candidate to take over as the new captain in Tests as he is a regular across all formats and has been consistent in the whites for Team India.

"If you ask me, I am still staying, I would look at Rishabh Pant as the next India captain,” Gavaskar had been quoted as saying by India Today. Reacting to the batting legend's comments, Yuvraj also echoed similar sentiments and backed Pant to replace Kohli as the new captain of the Indian Test side.

"Absolutely! Reads the game well behind the stumps," Yuvraj wrote in a tweet, extending his backing for Pant as the new leader in Tests for India.

As per reports, Rohit Sharma is the leading contender to take over as the new captain of the Test team having already been appointed as the skipper in limited-over formats. KL Rahul is likely to be his deputy across all three formats as the Indian team prepares for a new era under head coach Rahul Dravid.

However, Kohli's legacy as captain in Tests will be hard to match for even the best of leaders considering what he achieved with the team. Kohli signed off as India's most successful Test captain with 40 wins in just 68 Test matches and is also the fourth most successful Test captain of all time.

Yuvraj Singh reacts as Sunil Gavaskar picks Rishabh Pant to replace Virat Kohli as India's new Test captain

Virat Kohli's shocking decision to leave India's Test captaincy has become one of the major talking points in world cricket. Kohli announced his decision on social media on Saturday (January 15) following India's 2-1 defeat in the recently-concluded three-match Test series against South Africa.

Former India captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has named an Indian batter who he feels can replace Kohli as the next skipper of the Indian Test team. Gavaskar snubbed both KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, who are among strong contenders to replace Kohli as the new Test skipper and backed Rishabh Pant to be handed over the baton.

Gavaskar, who had earlier backed KL Rahul to be the vice-captain in the longest format, feels selectors will have to engage in a long debate on whom to appoint as the next Test skipper of the side. The batting legend feels Pant can be an ideal candidate for captaincy considering he is a regular across all formats and has the leadership qualities.

"It's going to be quite a debate as far as the selection committee is concerned as to who should be taking Indian cricket forward. First of all, it should be someone who is an automatic pick across all formats of the game. Once that happens, it will be a lot easier. If you ask me, I am still staying, I would look at Rishabh Pant as the next India captain,” Gavaskar said on India Today.

Pant has been a consistent performer for India in Tests over the last few years and has scored runs in all sorts of conditions. After being criticised for throwing away his wicket in the second innings of the second Test against South Africa, Pant silenced his critics with a stunning unbeaten century in the recently-concluded third Test. He scored an unbeaten 100 off 139 balls, however, his efforts went in vain as South Africa won the decider by seven wickets to take the series 2-1.

Pant has been backed by many as a future superstar of the Indian team but has been often criticised for throwing his wicket away with careless batting at crucial junctures. However, Gavaskar believes the added responsibility of captaining the side can help inspire a change in his approach.

"For one reason only, just like Rohit Sharma was given the captaincy of Mumbai Indians when Ricky Ponting stepped down, look at the change in his batting after that. Suddenly the responsibility of being captain made him convert those beautiful cameos of 30s, 40s and 50s into hundreds, 150s and 200s. I think that sense of responsibility given to Rishabh Pant will help him score many more of that wonderful hundred he scored at Newlands," Gavaskar explained.

Not Rohit or Rahul! Sunil Gavaskar names player who should replace Virat Kohli as India's next Test captain

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has slammed Team India for their 'baffling' tactics in the recently-concluded series-deciding third Test against South Africa at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. India lost the game by seven wickets as South Africa went on to clinch the three-match Test series 2-1.

Gavaskar said he was left surprised by the Indian team's tactics post lunch on Day 4 of the third and final Test between the two sides. South Africa were cruising towards victory post lunch but India refrained from using the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Shardul Thakur a lot which baffled Gavaskar, who said the visitors looked like they had given up on victory even without a fight.

Gavaskar, who had backed India to script history by winning their maiden Test series in South Africa this time around, said the dream of the maiden Test triumph turned into a nightmare as India lost the series 2-1.

"India's cricket after lunch has just baffled me. One would've thought that you would make one last-ditch effort, bring Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami on to bowl. Because after an interval, batsmen have to reset. India's dream of winning a series for the first time in South Africa has turned into a nightmare," Gavaskar said on-air while commentating during the third Test.

'Dream turned into a nightmare': Sunil Gavaskar baffled by India's tactics in third Test against South Africa

It is safe to say that the current Indian cricket team is one of the best sides in the purest format of the game. They are ranked No. 1 in ICC Test rankings and have won some memorable series away from home in recent times, under Virat Kohli's leadership.

While Kohli's infectious energy, intensity and love for the Test format rubs off his teammates, one of the major reasons for India's rise in Tests -- since 2015 -- has been due to the pacers. The likes of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, etc. have contributed immensely to India's rise in whites in the last five-six years.

Among the current pace battery, Shami wasn't having an ideal time in the longest format of the game when India last toured South Africa in early 2018. Little Master Sunil Gavaskar recalled how former head coach Ravi Shastri inspired Shami to get his act together and deliver during India's third and inconsequential Test versus the Proteas, in Johannesburg, after the visitors had already conceded the three-match series 2-0.

Talking on commentary during the ongoing third and final Test between India-SA, in Cape Town, Gavaskar said, "At the Wanderers, the last time around in 2018, was when they actually got stuck into him apparently because till then he hadn’t really delivered. They said to him that on this pitch if you’re not going to take wickets then… So the word is and I am not too sure that Ravi gave him a rocket."

"And then he came out and destroyed South Africa. Sometimes you know, you need to put an arm around a player, sometimes you’ve got to just get stuck into him."

Thus, Kohli & Co. won the 2018 J'burg Test by 63 runs -- in defence of 241 -- courtesy Shami's five-fer in the final innings.

In the ongoing Cape Town Test, Shami has contributed with two scalps in SA's first innings. On his performance so far, the legendary Indian cricketer Gavaskar said, "Somebody of his calibre, you can’t keep him out of the game for a long time. He had seen Yadav take a couple of wickets, he had seen Bumrah bowl splendidly and take 2 wickets. So he wanted to contribute. And he came in and did it at the right time. That Bavuma and Petersen partnership was a delight to watch but at the same time it was threatening India, so they needed a wicket at that stage and Shami delivered it."

After India were bundled out for 223 in the 2021/22 Test series finale, SA were dismissed for 210 whereas Kohli & Co. are 130-4, leading by 143, at lunch on Day 3, on Thursday (January 13).

Ind vs SA: Gavaskar shares how Ravi Shastri inspired speedster Md Shami's revival in Test cricket in 2018

Former India captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has backed Ajinkya Rahane to keep his spot in the playing XI in the upcoming third Test against South Africa at the Newlands in Cape Town. Rahane has been enduring a lean patch in the longest format for a while now and has failed to score runs consistently. He is under immense pressure to perform in order to save his spot in the Test side.

India n captain Virat Kohli, who had missed the second Test in Johannesburg due to a back spasm, is expected to make his comeback after recovering from the back issue. While many expect Rahane to make way for the skipper when he returns to the playing XI, considering the senior batter's poor form, Gavaskar wants Hanuma Vihari to be replaced and feels Rahane should continue being a part of the playing XI.

Rahane was dismissed for a duck in the first innings of the second Test against South Africa when Gavaskar had said the next innings was going to be his final shot at saving his Test career. The right-hander went on to notch up a solid 58-run-knock in the second innings while Vihari, who had missed the first Test, got scores of 20 and 40 not out in the two innings of the second Test.

Gavaskar said India's only change should be a replacement for fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, who picked up an injury. The batting legend wants the visitors to not tinker with the combination a lot and try to win the series-decider in Cape Town.

"Apart from the injury aspect about Siraj, I don't see any changes in the XI. This was pretty much the same team that won the first Test match. Obviously, when Kohli comes back Vihari will be the one to miss out. And if Siraj doesn't recover or the team management doesn't have enough confidence in him, because in a five-day Test match and on a day he is expected to deliver, but if he isn't being able to bowl for 15-20 overs owing to the hamstring then they will have him replace. Whether it will be Umesh Yadav or Ishant Sharma, but that is going to be the only concern as far as the Indian team is concerned," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

The former India captain said both Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, who have been facing the heat for their poor show with the bat, came out good in the second innings of the Johannesburg Test against the Proteas and should be backed considering their experience and what they have done for the team in the past.

“Already the team has backed them owing to their experience and what they have done for India in the past. And they did come good. You have these exciting young players waiting in the wings whom we are all wanting to see but as long as these senior players are playing and playing well and not getting out badly them I think we should stick with them and faith in them," Gavaskar said.

Not Ajinkya Rahane! Sunil Gavaskar names player Virat Kohli should replace in 3rd Test vs South Africa

India lost the second and penultimate Test versus Dean Elgar-led South Africa by 7 wickets as the threee-match series is now levelled at 1-1 with the final Test set to be held on January 11, at Newlands, Cape Town. Despite the loss, India have plenty of takeaways as they competed hard despite regular captain Virat Kohli warming the bench due to upper back spasm.

In addition, the middle-order stood tall as the likes of under-fire senior pros Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane got some runs (sharing a 111-run stand for the third-wicket during India's second essay) and returning with a half-century each. Hanuma Vihari, playing for injured Kohli, also got runs in both the innings and looked impressive. After the Test, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has lavished praise on India's No. 3 Pujara and claims that he reminds him of SA great Hashim Amla.

“When I look at him, he reminds me of Hashim. Watching Hashim bat, you know there's a sense of calm that everything is under control. The ball could be doing things but there was that sense because even on pitches where the ball was turning, the way Hashim was batting in India, it was almost as if, 'look, nothing's happening', and that's the same thing with Cheteshwar Pujara," said Gavaskar on SuperSport.

Gavaskar further termed that players with Pujara's temperament are "absolutely terrific" for the dressing room.

“It is a great, great blessing to have players of this temperament in your dressing room. (It may not be) necessarily just on the field but it's a huge plus and I think having somebody with Cheteshwar Puajra's temperament in the changing room must be absolutely terrific because in international cricket, there are several moments of tension where people would want to do this or that or the other. When you have somebody who's going to think about it calmly and give you a measured opinion it makes a big difference,” said Gavaskar.

Not Virat Kohli or KL Rahul! Sunil Gavaskar names under-fire Indian batter who reminds him of Hashim Amla

Sunil Gavaskar had lashed out at Rishabh Pant for his poor shot selection on Day 3 of the second and penultimate Test between India and South Africa, at The Wanderers, Johannesburg, on Wednesday (February 05). Coming out to bat after India had lost both their overnight batters -- half-centurions Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane -- in their second essay, Pant had a job in hand to resurrect the innings with Hanuma Vihari and stretch the lead beyond 200.

However, nothing of that sort happened as Pant fell for a three-ball duck. The swashbuckling left-hander danced down the track and took on Kagiso Rabada, however, he failed to connect as he got a thick edge and was caught cleanly by the keeper. Thus, Gavaskar slammed Pant's approach and shot selection while on commentary duties and once again during The Byju's Cricket Live Show on Star Sports..

Gavaskar said, "It's a valid question. This is something one could understand if Rishabh Pant had been batting on 30 and 40. This is something he had not done in Australia. There he applied himself, recognised that there will be hard times at the beginning when you come in to bat and then battling through the hard times, he got set and got to know how the pitch is. And then he played the big shots. That's what he did in Australia."

Gavaskar further asserted, "This is something we saw against England, at the start of the series. When England came to India, he was jumping down the pitch and trying to hit James Anderson… he did that so well. But after that he seems to think that is the only way to play. That is not the way to play and I am pretty certain that in the change room, Rahul Dravid would have given him a hearing, or as they say in cricket, Dravid must have given him a 'bamboo'."

Even former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir slammed Pant after the end of the third day's play and told on Star Sports, "It’s foolishness. Even if he (Rishabh Pant) had got a six off the ball, he shouldn’t have played the shot."

"Unbelievable, you will call that stupidity and not bravery. The way Rahane and Pujara got you back in this Test match, you have given it back to South Africa. This is not Test cricket. There is a very thin line to call yourself brave. If you had hit a six as well with that shot, you would still not have called that an excellent shot. Test cricket is all about handling pressure and you knew that Rabada was bowling his fourth or fifth over," Gambhir added.

Talking about the Day 4 of the second Test, India need 8 more wickets whereas Proteas need 122 more to win in pursuit of 240 at The Wanderers, J'burg. Rain break and wet outfield has washed out the first two sessions of the penultimate day's play.

Dravid must have given him a hearing: Gavaskar on Rishabh Pant's shot selection on Day 3 of J'burg Test

Day 3 of the second and penultimate Test between India and South Africa started on an emphatic note for the KL Rahul-led visitors. The overnight batters in the form of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane came out with positive intent and added some quick runs in the first hour of the day's play.

Scoring at a rapid pace, India strengthened their position and bolstered their lead past the three-figure mark. However, both Pujara and Rahane fell quickly after reaching their respective half-centuries. With two wickets falling on the trot, the onus fell on Hanuma Vihari and Rishabh Pant. The two were expected to start from scratch and extend India's lead past the 200-run mark but Pant fell for a three-ball duck.

Tested by the extra pace of Kagiso Rabada, his Delhi Capitals' (DC) teammate, Pant danced down the track to take on the SA seamer very early in his innings (facing his third delivery). However, he failed to connect properly, got a thick edge and was caught for nought. Hence, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar slammed Pant's approach after his miserable outing on Day 3 of the second Test.

Gavaskar, who is in South Africa for the commentary duties, told on-air, "You have got two new batsmen at the crease and then you saw that shot from Rishabh Pant. Forgettable, no excuses for that shot, no excuses. None of that nonsense about that being his natural game."

"There is supposed to be a bit of responsibility shown. Because there are others taking the blows. There are guys like Rahane and Pujara who have taken it on their body. So you also fight it out. I tell you what, you won't get too many kind words in the changing room," Gavaskar further asserted in the commentary box.

India are on the cusp of winning their maiden Test series on South African soil after winning the three-match Test series opener, at Centurion, by 113 runs.

However, he failed to connect properly, got a thick edge and was caught for nought. Hence, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar slammed Pant's approach after his miserable outing on Day 3 of the second Test. 'No excuses, none of that nonsense...' - Gavaskar slams Pant after his dismissal on Day 3 of J'brug Test

On Monday (January 3), Indian cricket loyalists were in for a shock when they saw KL Rahul walk out for the coin toss for the second Test between India and South Africa, at The Wanderers, Johannesburg. Regular captain Virat Kohli -- who was set to appear in his 99th Test -- missed out due to upper back spasm and Rahul (who was promoted as the vice-captain in Rohit Sharma's absence for the series) took charge of the side.

Winning the toss, Rahul-led India opted to bat first at The Wanderers, J'burg. While the national side started well, at 36 for no loss, they were soon reduced to 49-3. From thereon, it was hardwork for in-form opener Rahul to get to his 13th half-century amid regular fall of wickets. Rahul eventually fell to Marco Jansen's well-executed short-pitched delivery for a well-made 133-ball 50.

Courtesy his knock, the 29-year-old Rahul entered an elite list -- featuring the likes of Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar, Sourav Ganguly, etc. -- to have scored 50 or more runs on captaincy debut. For the unversed, Vijay Hazare, who scored an unbeaten 164 in 1951, tops the list, followed by Sunil Gavaskar (116 runs) and Virat Kohli (115) on the second and third position respectively. Sourav Ganguly (84 runs), Chandu Borde (69), Hemu Adhikari (63) and Nari Contractor are also part of this unique club.

Meanwhile, Rahul became the fifth Indian captain to surpass the 50-run mark while opening the innings. Little Master Gavaskar (25 times), Contractor (4 times), current head coach Rahul Dravid (2) and Virender Sehwag (2) are also part of the elusive panel.

Following Rahul's 50, Ashwin's 46 and some contributions from Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant and vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah took the team total to 202 all-out in the final session on Day 1 of the second Test.

Ind vs SA, 2nd Test: Rahul joins elite list comprising Virat Kohli and Ganguly after 50 on captaincy debut

Former India captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes both Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have only one more innings to save their respective Test careers. Pujara and Rahane were both dismissed cheaply once again in the ongoing second Test between India and South Africa at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Monday.

Pujara and Rahanve have both been under fire for quite some time now over their long-standing rough patch with the willow. Despite their inconsistent run, the senior batters have been constantly backed by the team management. However, their time might be running out with an intense competition for spots in the batting line-up.

The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill among others are waiting in the wings as both Rahane and Pujara continue to underperform. On Monday, Pujara was dismissed on just 3 runs after facing 33 balls as he ended up getting caught by Temba Bavuma against Duanne Olivier.

The South African pacer then went on o remove Rahane on a duck on the very next delivery. With two consecutive wickets on two deliveries, India were left reeling at 49/3 after the duo's dismissal. Reacting to another failure from Rahane and Pujara, Gavaskar said the senior batters have only the next innings of the ongoing Johannesburg Test to save their Test careers.

"After those two dismissals one can say that they probably have just the next innings, both Pujara and Rahane, to save their Test careers," said Gavaskar on-air while commentating during Day 1 of the second Test.

"There have been questions asked about their place in the team and now with these two dismissals, they have just one innings left. If there is another innings and the way India is going, it looks like there will be another for them to score something and maybe keep their place in the team," the batting great added.

Openers Mayank Agarwal (26) and captain KL Rahul had given a good start to India in their first innings of the Johannesburg Test. However, the visitors lost the momentum after losing Mayank in the 15th over. His departure was followed by Pujara and Rahane's dismissal in quick succession.

However, captain Rahul is still out in the middle and has displayed amazing gritiness so far in his innings and is still unbeaten in the middle to help India recover from the middle-order collapse.

Pujara and Rahane have just the next innings to save their Test careers, says Sunil Gavaskar as duo fail again

Virat Kohli, on Wednesday (December 29), ended the calendar year without any international century. For the unversed, it became his second successive year with no ton at the highest level. The 33-year-old's last ton came in late 2019, with a century in India's first-ever day-night Test (versus Bangladesh at home).

As Kohli's century-drought continues, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Little Master Sunil Gavaskar opined on the Test captain's dismissal during the national side's second innings of the Centurion Test. While Kohli chased a wide delivery to fall for 35 in the first essay, his departure in the second innings was in a largely similar fashion (out for 18). Thus, Gavaskar opened up on his dismissal on Day 4 of the series opener.

During commentary on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, "You've got to say that was a loose shot, first ball after lunch. Every batsman, when he resumes, gives himself a little time, particularly in Test cricket - gives himself a little time to get his feet moving."

"Any interval, even if it's a short four-minute drinks interval, after that you've still got to reset your batting. Kohli is such an experienced batsman but maybe at the back of his mind, he is looking to get quick runs, so that the declaration can be done," added the legendary Indian cricketer.

"Have a look, how far away that ball is. He could have left it well alone, first ball after lunch," Gavaskar slammed Kohli's shot after watching the replay.

In Kohli's defence, he may have had the mindset to score some quick runs as India were looking to set up a competitive target for Dean Elgar-led South Africa in the Centurion Test. With weather forecast suggesting rain interference on Day 5, hence, India looked to attack more in their second essay -- after gaining a 130-run first-innings lead -- to fold for 174.

At present, India are in the driver's seat to win the Centurion Test on Day 5 on Thursday (December 30). If India win, it will be their first-ever at the venue; fourth-overall in the African nation.
