Rohit Sharma-led India is set to kick off their campaign in the main draw of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition on Sunday (October 23) as they face Pakistan in their tournament opener. In last year's edition, held in the UAE, Virat Kohli-led India were thrashed by Babar Azam's Pakistan by ten wickets in both sides' Super 12 openers and Men in Blue never recovered as they also lost to New Zealand before winning three games in a row, versus weaker sides, to bow out of the competition without making the semi-finals.&nbsp;

This time around, there are high hopes from India. Rohit-led India have done very well in T20Is in the calendar year and are entering the tournament as the No. 1 ranked side. Ahead of their face-off versus Pakistan, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar rated India's chances.&nbsp;

"One thing for sure. If the Indian team does not win this T20 World Cup it won't be for lack of preparation. Not only have they gone to Australia almost three weeks before their first game of the tournament, they are also playing practice games against good sides that should get them ready for the tournament," Gavaskar opined in his column in the Mid-Day.

<section>
He further asserted, "The old saying, 'if you fail to prepare then prepare to fail' will not apply to this Indian team as, apart from these games in Australia, they also played six T20 matches at home and won four out of those to show that they are tuning in nicely for the big event."

While Gavaskar sounds confident of India's chances at the T20 WC 2022 edition, he also pointed out why they have faltered in previous ICC events. "India's performance in the white ball bilaterals has always been good, be it at home or overseas, but it's in the multilateral events that they have been stumbling. In the past it's been because they have come cold into the event," he added.

'If they do not win this time...' - Sunil Gavaskar rates India's chances at T20 WC before Pakistan clash

Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team is currently in Australia preparing for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 without the 15th member of their official squad. The selectors are yet to name a replacement for injured fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who was ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury.

In his absence, the experienced Mohammed Shami is being touted to take over Bumrah's spot in the team. However, the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur among others remain in contention. Deepak Chahar was also a contender to replace Bumrah but the pacer has been reportedly ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to a bask issue.

Chahar was part of India's reserves along with Shami and could have been promoted to the main team as Bumrah's replacement. However, he won't travel to Australia now. BCCI have instead sent Shami, Siraj and Shardul as reinforcements for the Indian team while not confirming who out of the three will be Bumrah's official replacement in the main squad.

Recently, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar picked the player who he feels can be an ideal replacement for injured Bumrah in India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2022. Keeping in mind that Shami has not played a T20I for India since the T20 World Cup last year and is returning after recovering from COVID-19 recently, Gavaskar said he would go with Siraj.

“I'd go for Siraj because he has been bowling well, Shami has not played for a while. And to hit your steps straight away in a World Cup, yes there are a couple of warm-up matches. As of now, nobody has been selected as the 15th player. I don't know...has he gone with the team to Australia? He hasn't gone. So he has played no cricket. And that's a concern," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

"No doubting his quality. Just the fact that he (Shami) has not played any cricket. It's never easy to come back after Covid. Your stamina can be a little bit of suspect - I know it's a four-over game in T20I cricket. But look at the way Siraj has been bowling. He's bowling brilliantly," he added.

Siraj was impressive with the ball in the recently-concluded three-match ODI series against South Africa at home where he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker for India wicket five wickets. While Shami's experience and skills make him the frontrunner to replace Bumrah, Siraj can give the senior pacer a run for his money on his current form.

It remains to be seen who will be the selectors' choice for Bumrah's spot in the squad. October 15 is the deadline for all teams to finalise their squads and India will soon have to officially confirm Bumrah's replacement. The Men in Blue will open their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign against Pakistan on October 23.

Mohammed Shami or Mohammed Siraj? Sunil Gavaskar picks Jasprit Bumrah's replacement for T20 World Cup

On Monday evening (October 03), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss the forthcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, which gets underway on October 16. Bumrah's injury woes were highlighted on September 30, giving sleepless nights to Indian cricket fans worldwide. After the official announcement came, it is likely that senior pacer Mohammed Shami or Deepak Chahar will replace him. The two speedsters were named in the reserves by the BCCI selection committee when the squad was announced early in September.

"The BCCI Medical team has ruled out Team India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. The decision was taken following a detailed assessment and in consultation with the specialists," BCCI said in a statement, confirming Bumrah's ouster from the showpiece event Down Under. Bumrah's absence is a huge dent to Rohit Sharma-led India's chances of winning their second T20 WC, after the 2007 edition.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar has now reacted to Bumrah's absence. "Jasprit Bumrah's absence from the Indian team for the World Cup will hurt India considerably. There's no other player in the Indian team, with due respect to every other player, whose absence means so much than Bumrah," Gavaskar wrote in a column for Mid-Day.

"We saw in the two games that he played how effective he was and how his presence in the team galvanised the other bowlers. Whether he made the comeback too soon, is now something in the nature of conjecture, but the fact remains that his absence is a huge blow for India’s prospects in the T20 World Cup. The way Deepak Chahar and young Arshdeep Singh exploited the conditions in Thiruvananthapuram does give hope that, with a bit of luck, they can fill in a fair bit of the hole left by Bumrah's absence," the Little Master further added.

India will now expect their pacers -- such as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh -- to rise up to the occasion in Bumrah's absence and hope for Shami or Chahar to make a big mark in the upcoming ICC event in Australia. In the last year's edition, Virat Kohli-led India failed to impress and bowed out in the Super 12 round. In their dismal run, Bumrah returned as their most-successful bowler, with seven scalps at an economy of&nbsp;5.08.

'There's no other player in Team India...' - Sunil Gavaskar on Jasprit Bumrah missing T20 World Cup

India lost to Australia in the first of the three-match T20I series on Tuesday evening (September 20) at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. Being asked to bat first, India lost captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli early but rode on vice-captain KL Rahul's 55, Suryakumar Yadav's 46 and Hardik Pandya's 71 not out to post a tall score, of 208 for 6 in 20 overs.

In reply, Australia were cruising at 108 for 1 at the halfway stage before a collapse saw them being reduced to 145-5 in 14.1 overs. At that stage, it seemed like India will edge past Australia but the T20 world champions rode on Matthew Wade's 45 not out, off 21 balls, after Cameron Green's impressive 61 to win by four wickets in 19.2 overs. In this way, the Aussies recorded their highest T20I run-chase versus the 2007 champions.

After the contest, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar mentioned India's 'real concern heading into the T20 World Cup, from next month in Australia. "I don't think there was too much dew. We didn't see the fielders or bowlers trying to use the towel to try and dry their fingers. That's not an excuse. We didn't bowl well. For example, that 19th over... that's a real concern,” Gavaskar said on&nbsp;Sports Today&nbsp;following the game.

“Somebody like a Bhuvneshwar Kumar is going for runs every single time, when he is expected.. in 18 deliveries he has bowled in three matches against Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and now Australia, he has given away 49 runs. It is almost three runs per ball. Somebody with his experience and calibre, you expect he will give 35-36 runs in those 18 deliveries. That really is an area of concern,” pointed out the&nbsp;ex-Indian skipper.

Bhuvi leaked 31 runs in his last 12 deliveries in Mohali. Even in India's Super Four games versus Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the experienced pacer gave away 19 and 14 runs, respectively, as Rohit &amp; Co. lost both the fixtures.

Gavaskar further pinned his hopes on Jasprit Bumrah's comeback to revive India's death-bowling. "What we have seen in last few years is that has been one of the areas where India have suffered. They have not been able to defend good&nbsp;scores. Maybe when (Jasprit) Bumrah comes in it might be a completely different situation because he gets wickets at the top. India didn't get those today as Australia got off to a flying start,”Gavaskar added.

Bumrah was given some time to return to international cricket, having last played during the England ODIs, but is expected to appear in India's must-win game versus Australia, on Friday (September 23) in Nagpur.

Ind vs Aus, 1st T20I: Sunil Gavaskar points out Rohit & Co.'s 'real concern' after defeat in Mohali run-feast

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar shared his two cents on skipper Rohit Sharma's recent struggles for the Indian team in white-ball cricket. While he has been among the runs, Rohit has been far from consistent and has often gotten out trying to go after the bowlers.

India's new approach to go all-out from the word go in T20Is has ended up costing Rohit his wicket on several occasions. The opening batter tried to take on the Australian bowlers early in India's innings in the first T20I in Mohali on Tuesday but ended up getting dismissed cheaply for just 11 off nine deliveries.

Rohit played a couple of good shots during his stay in the middle, including a brilliant six over backward square leg against Pat Cummins in the second over. However, the Indian skipper perished in the next over after trying to flick one for a six against Josh Hazlewood.

Explaining Rohit's recent struggles on the pitch, Gavaskar said the Indian skipper is trying to do a little bit more every time he walks out to bat. The India legend believes Rohit should take his time in settling down at the top before taking on the bowlers as he has enough shots in his arsenal to catch up later even if he starts slow.

"With Rohit Sharma, the range of shots that he has, he doesn't really have to do what he is looking to do over here, that is step down the pitch even before the bowler has released the ball," Gavaskar told India Today.

"The way he has been playing T20 cricket before that, his scoring and strike rate has been phenomenal. It's been absolutely terrific. He hasn't tried to do anything more. Over here, in the last few matches, it just seems to me that he is looking to do a little bit more and, in the process, getting out," he added.

Despite Rohit's cheap dismissal in the first T20I, India managed to post a big total of 208 runs riding on brilliant half-centuries from KL Rahul (55) and Hardik Pandya (71). Suryakumar Yadav also looked in terrific touch as he notched up a quickfire 46 off 25 deliveries. However, their efforts went in vain as Australia gunned down the target with four balls to spare.

Rohit's personal form can be a concern for India with the T20 World Cup 2022 starting next month in Australia. The Hitman hasn't looked on top of his game and Gavaskar believes he needs to give himself time while opening to ensure he can produce impactful knocks for the team.

"I do believe that Rohit needs to give himself that little more time, he has got all the shots in the book. Even if he gets off to a slow start, he can triple it by the time his innings is over," he added," said Gavaskar.

Rohit has so far scored 434 runs in 18 T20Is this year at an average of 25.52. He has maintained a healthy strike rate of 142.76 but has managed only two fifties in the shortest format, highlighting his inconsistent returns at the top. The Indian skipper will be hopeful of bouncing back in the remaining two games of the ongoing three-match T20I series against Australia.

He is trying to do a litte bit more: Sunil Gavaskar explains reason behind Rohit Sharma's struggles for India

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, who was part of the MS Dhoni-led Indian team's victorious run in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup, has criticised the hero-worship culture present among Indian cricket fans. Gambhir slammed the culture and said that Indian cricket fans, media and broadcasters shouldn't create monsters in the dressing room by idolising individuals and forgetting the contributions of other players.

The 40-year-old Gambhir believes that this culture, which dates back to 1983 when India won the ODI World Cup at Lord's, has led to fans lauding stars such as Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Kapil Dev to such an extent that they forget or undervalue the contributions of other team members.

"Don’t create monsters in the dressing room. Only monster should be Indian cricket, not an individual," Gambhir told the Indian Express on their show Idea Exchange. "Do you think that this whole hero worship chokes the next star to come up? Nobody has grown in that shadow. It was Mahendra Singh Dhoni earlier, it is Virat Kohli now," the former southpaw&nbsp;added.

Backing his claims, Gambhir gave an example of the India-Afghanistan Asia Cup clash, which was headlined by Kohli by virtue of his 71st international century. He believes Kohli took all the limelight due to the hero-worship culture and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (who returned with 5 for 4)'s contributions got completely neglected. "When Kohli got a 100 and there was this young guy from a small town of Meerut (Bhuvneshwar Kumar), who also managed to get five wickets, no one even bothered to speak about him. This was so unfortunate. I was the only one, during that commentary stint, who said that. He bowled four overs and got five wickets and I don’t think anyone knows about that. But Kohli scores a 100 and there are celebrations everywhere in this country. India needs to come out of this hero worship. Whether it’s Indian cricket, whether it’s politics, whether it’s Delhi cricket. We have to stop worshipping heroes. The only thing that we need to worship is Indian cricket, or for that matter Delhi or India," Gambhir explained.

The former Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) skipper Gambir further asserted, "Who created that? It is created by two things. First, by social media followers, which is probably the fakest thing in this country because you are judged by how many followers you have. That is what creates a brand."

"Second, by the media and the broadcasters. If you keep talking about one person day in and day out, it eventually becomes a brand. That is how it was in 1983. Why start from Dhoni? It started in 1983. When India won the first World Cup, it was all about Kapil Dev. When we won in 2007 and 2011, it was Dhoni. Who created that? None of the players did. Nor did the BCCI. Have the news channels and broadcasters ever spoken about Indian cricket? Have we ever spoken that Indian cricket needs to flourish? There are more than two or three people who are stakeholders of Indian cricket. They don’t rule Indian cricket, they should not be ruling Indian cricket. Indian cricket should be ruled by the 15 people sitting in that dressing room. Everyone has a contribution to make … … I’ve never been able to follow anyone in my life. And that has been my biggest problem. The media and the broadcasters create a brand, no one else creates a brand," added Gambhir.

'Only monster should be Indian cricket': Gautam Gambhir urges countrymen to get past hero-worship culture

Team India is now gearing up for the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, set to be held in Australia from October-November. The main squad, comprising 15 players, were announced on Monday evening (September 16) and the ardent Indian cricket fans are backing Rohit Sharma-led India to return with the trophy this time around.

India haven't won an ICC title since 2013 and in the last edition of the T20 WC, held last year in the UAE, saw the Virat Kohli-led Men in Blue bow out of the marquee tournament in the Super 12 round. India's main concern has been the struggle to finalise a settled XI, causing their downfall in recent multi-nation tournaments (including the Asia Cup). However, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has backed India to win the trophy if luck favours them.

"I believe that this team, with a bit of luck that every team needs, can bring home the trophy," Gavaskar told The Indian Express. "Once the team is selected, then it’s our India team and we all have to back it. We shouldn’t question selections and omissions as it can demoralise some of the players," the batting great added.

India, after a dismal Asia Cup campaign, will now host Australia and South Africa in white-ball assignments at home before boarding the flight to Australia. Thus, they will use their remaining T20I fixtures to find a balanced XI and then go all-out in the showpiece event Down Under. They are placed in Pool B with Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa with two more teams joining from the qualifiers.

India's final 15-man squad for T20 World Cup 2022:

Rohit Sharma (C), KL Rahul (VC), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dinesh Karthik (WK), Hardik Pandya, R&nbsp;Ashwin, Yuzvendra&nbsp;Chahal, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh

'With bit of...' - Sunil Gavaskar mentions the factor which can help India win T20 World Cup

Hardik Pandya will be India's first-choice all-rounder in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 and is expected to play a key role for the team in the tournament. Pandya has been in brilliant form ever since making his comeback to competitive cricket in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 earlier this year.

Pandya played an instrumental role in leading Gujarat Titans to their maiden IPL title in their debut season before continuing his purple patch with the Indian team. He has since been unstoppable and will be hoping to extend his stellar run at the T20 World Cup in Australia next month.

Explaining Pandya's importance in the Indian team, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar backed him to play a similar role as former all-rounder Ravi Shastri did for India in 1985. Shastri was the Man of the Series under Gavaskar's captaincy in the 1985 World Series where he notched up 182 runs in five matches, including three fifties and also picked up eight wickets.

Riding on Shastri's all-round heroics, India went on to win the tournament after defeating Pakistan in the final. Gavaskar believes Pandya can pull off something similar for India at the T20 World Cup this year and help India win the trophy.

"Yes, I think he could possibly do what Ravi Shastri did in 1985 where Ravi was the outstanding performer with both bat and ball in the entire tournament. Some good catches as well. Hardik Pandya is capable of doing that," Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.

Gavaskar also pointed out how Pandya can win matches for India not just with his batting and bowling, but also with his fielding. The star all-rounder is one of the best fielders in the side and has is capable of pulling off sensational catches and run-outs.

"Don't forget, at mid-off, he affects some electrifying run-outs as well. Direct hits at the bowler's end, catching the batter inches short. It's not just the bowling and the batting aspects of Hardik Pandya, the fielding aspect that could turn the game India's way. I won't be surprised if he is like the Ravi Shastri of 1985, if he is like the Champion of Champions," Gavaskar explained.

Pandya has been excellent for India in T20Is this year ever since making his comeback for the team. The all-rounder has amassed 331 runs in 16 matches at an average of 30.09 and picked up 12 wickets. In the absence of Ravindra Jadeja, a lot will ride on Pandya's shoulders at the T20 World Cup.

'We can always crib but...: Sunil Gavaskar reacts as BCCI names India's final squad for T20 World Cup

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar recently called upon the management of the Indian cricket team to pay close attention to the gaps that were revealed in the team's game so as to ensure that the same issues can be ironed out before the team sets off on its ICC Men's&nbsp;T20 World Cup campaign.

Gavaskar asserted that the management and the fans should move on from the setbacks that the team suffered in the United Arab Emirates, and support the team to perform better at the forthcoming T20 World Cup, which is more important in the grander scheme of things.

'Plug those gaps'- Sunil Gavaskar calls upon Indian management to improve and set sights on T20 World Cup

India cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has come down heavily on the trolls targeting Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh over his dropped catch in the Super Four clash against Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 on Sunday. Arshdeep has been subjected to vicious abuse after his mistake in the game as India lost by five wickets.

Pakistan batter Asif&nbsp;Ali got a reprieve during the 18th over of their 182-run chase against India in Dubai on Sunday when Arshdeep spilt a sitter. It was a routine catch but pressure seemed to have gotten the better of the fast bowler, who dropped a dolly. Ali went on to score 16 runs off 8 balls and take Pakistan home in the last-over thriller.

Arshdeep has since been on the receiving end of merciless trolling and abuse online. Several former cricketers have come out in support of the youngster, including Gavaskar, who lashed out at the trolls stating that they should not be taken seriously.

"No former cricketer has criticised Arshdeep," said during a discussion on Sports Tak.&nbsp;“Who are these people who are critical of Arshdeep? Why do we need to give credence to them? How many of them can catch the ball that flies into the stands? Rarely anyone. So how does their comments matter,” he added.

Further questioning the credentials of those hiding behind their social media accounts and abusing players, Gavaskar said players should avoid letting the unwarranted criticism get to their heads. The former India captain believes a player should take note if a former cricketer says something nasty about them but ignore the trolls.

“I actually don't even know why people take all these people who are commenting adversely seriously. Who are they? If a former player or a fellow player actually says something nasty, something critical, then you take note. You can't ignore that because that person has had the experience of having played the game," said Gavaskar.

“Somebody who has never played the game, somebody, who is hiding behind some anonymous identity, why would you take them seriously," he added.

Arshdeep will be eager to put the incident behind and bounce back when India lock horns with Sri Lanka in their second Super Four clash in Dubai on Tuesday. It will be a must-win clash for India, who have only two games remaining in the competition with a spot in the final on the line.

'How many can catch a ball in the stands?': Sunil Gavaskar lashes out trolls for targeting Arshdeep Singh

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar has shared his two cents on Virat Kohli's recent revelations in the post-match press conference after India's defeat against Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 on Sunday. Dropping a bombshell in the presser, Kohli had revealed many criticised him across social media platforms but only ex-India captain MS Dhoni was among former players who texted him after he quit as India's Test captain earlier this year.

Kohli had announced his decision to step down as India's Test captain in January this year following which Rohit Sharma took over as the new skipper in all three formats. During the presser, Kohli recalled his resignation from Test captaincy after he was asked how he dealt with the difficult patch in the last few months.

Kohli had been on the receiving end of massive criticism over his poor form with some even questioning his spot in India's T20I team before his solid comeback in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022. Recalling how Dhoni was the only one to message him among former players, Kohli said these things mattered to him.

“I can tell you one thing... when I left Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person, with whom I have played previously - MS Dhoni,” Kohli said in the presser.

“Many people have my number. On TV, lots of people give suggestions, but whoever had my number, no one texted. When you have a genuine connection with someone, it shows because you’re never insecure about each other," he added.

Reacting to Kohli's revelations, former India captain Gavaskar has said the senior batter should have named those who he didn't get in touch with him after he quit Test captaincy. While refraining from commenting on the situation inside the current India dressing room, Gavaskar said it would have been fair to those concerned had Kohli named them.

"I don't know what the dressing room inside situation was with all these other players, I think, ideally, if he has named one person who got in touch, maybe the other people who didn't get in touch should have also been named. Then that would have been a little bit fair to everyone concerned rather than thinking everybody else didn't get in touch with him," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

In the presser, Kohli had also spoken about the great environment in the team at present while praising head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma for keeping the team together. However, Gavaskar said he won't take Kohli's comments too seriously as no active player would want to go against the coach and captain.

"I am just saying what I feel when I hear the comments coming about the current leadership. One of the most futile questions that I hear during an IPL Q and A session between the commentators and the Man of the Match is asking about the current coach and the current captain," said Gavaskar.

"Is that current player ever going to say anything against the current captain and coach? That's a futile question. Nobody, anybody, who is mindful of his career, is going to cut his feet by saying something stupid about the current regime," he further added.

Kohli has so far looked in decent touch in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 and has been India's top-scorer with 154 runs in three matches, including back-to-back fifties in the last two matches for India. He will be looking to continue his fine form when India take on Sri Lanka in a must-win clash in the Super 4 on Tuesday.

Virat Kohli should have named people who didn't get in touch after he quit Test captaincy: Sunil Gavaskar

India lost to Pakistan in another thrilling encounter between both sides in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, being held in the UAE. After beating their arch-rivals Pakistan by five wickets in the group stage, India looked to&nbsp;make it two wins in a row during the Super Four match&nbsp;versus the Men in Green but the script favoured Babar Azam &amp; Co. Opting to bowl first, Pakistan bowlers didn't start well with Rohit Sharma-KL Rahul going all-out before the opposition bowlers somehow restricted India to 181/7 in 20 overs.

Losing Babar and Fakhar Zaman for cheap, Pakistan were in a tricky position before Mohammad Rizwan-Mohammad Nawaz's 73-run third-wicket stand kept them in the run-chase. Eventually, Rizwan's 71, Nawaz's 20-ball 42 and cameos from Asif Ali-Khusdil Shah took Pakistan to a famous five-wicket win on the penultimate ball of the contest. After the loss, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar opined on Rohit &amp; Co.'s team selection. It is interesting to note that Dinesh Karthik wasn't preferred in the playing XI, who was part of the line-up with Rishabh Pant benched during both sides' earlier face-off in the tournament.

"Dropping Dinesh Karthik, that was something that was a little bit hard to understand. Here, you have already identified him as a finisher. And, in this big game against Pakistan, you don’t pick him in the team. So, that was a bit of a surprise," Gavaskar told India Today after India's 5-wicket loss.

With Ravindra Jadeja ruled out due to a knee injury, India went ahead with Pant as the keeper-batter and Deepak Hooda playing as a finisher-cum-extra-bowling option. Thus, it made DK warm the bench versus Pakistan in the marquee clash at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. However, Hooda didn't bowl a single over despite expensive spells from Hardik Pandya and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Further, Gavaskar lauded Virat Kohli for regaining form, which keeps India in good stead going ahead in the Asian championship and the forthcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, from October-November. "We certainly have, he was middling the ball from the first ball he faced. There were a couple of terrific shots, the pull shot was the best of them all and even the flick for six to get to his fifty, there were some excellent shots. Most importantly, he was middling all the shots apart from one from the leg-spinner. Otherwise, everything was from the middle of the bat.

"That's what gives batter confidence. It's not the number of runs that you score, how you batted, he has batted quite superbly in this game against Pakistan. That augurs really well for India in the matches to come, "the legendary cricketer added.

Sunil Gavaskar 'surprised' with Rohit-led India's decision to not include Dinesh Karthik for Pakistan tie

KL Rahul has struggled with the willow ever since making his comeback from injury. The opening batter returned for the Men in Bue in their recently-concluded tour of Zimbabwe where he led the team in the absence of several senior players. He is currently in action for the Men in Blue in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022.

Rahul has been India's first-choice opener in white-ball cricket for a while now and has been opening the batting with captain Rohit Sharma in the ongoing Asia Cup after his return. However, his performances have been far from impressive so far as the stylish right-hander has been widely criticised over his timid approach in the shortest format.

He was dismissed for a duck in India's opening game against Pakistan and followed it up with a woeful 36-run knock in&nbsp;39 balls against minnows Hong Kong in their second game. Amid his struggles with the willow, India legend Sunil Gavaskar has issued a stern warning to Rahul.

Former India captain Gavaskar believes Rahul's poor form is a huge concern for the Indian team heading into the T20 World Cup 2022 later this year and that he should be replaced if cannot spark a turnaround. Gavaskar named Shubman Gill as an ideal replacement for Rahul at the top.

"See, Shubman Gill has batted so brilliantly in Zimbabwe and West Indies so there definitely is a stiff fight for the opening slot, the fight is tough. So if you aren't scoring runs and not in form then it's concerning. It's a matter of the World Cup, where you should only take players who are in form," Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.

Gill is not the only contender for the second opening slot as far as T20I are concerned for Team India. The likes of Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad are also in the fray and have been waiting in the wings for opportunities. Gavaskar believes India cannot take a chance with Rahul as only a handful of T20I matches remain in the run-up to the T20 World Cup.

"There is no scope of taking a chance with someone there, hoping that after 2-3 matches, a player will return to form. No. Because all World Cup matches are tough. Rahul has a few matches left and he will have to score runs otherwise, the selection committee will think what to do next," Gavaskar explained.

'No scope of taking a chance': Sunil Gavaskar issues warning to struggling KL Rahul ahead of T20 WC 2022

KL Rahul had a forgettable outing for Team India in&nbsp;their second game in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, where they locked horns with Hong Kong at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. On Wednesday evening (August 31), Rohit Sharma-led India locked horns with the minnows and rode on Suryakumar Yadav's 26-ball 68 not out and Virat Kohli's 59* to post 192-2 before restricting Hong Kong for 152-5 to win by 40 runs. While it was a fine outing for the Men in Blue, vice-captain Rahul was heavily criticised for his abysmal 39-ball 36.

Rahul, returning to international cricket during the Zimbabwe series last month, struggled to open his account and was dismissed for a golden duck versus Pakistan in defending champions India's Asia Cup opener. Versus Hong Kong, he opened with captain Rohit and fell on the last ball of the 13th over, after stitching a handy 54-run stand with Virat Kohli, before his dismissal. The right-hander hit only two fours in his innings. Thus, many slammed Rahul on social media and some former cricketers also had few words to say about his&nbsp;struggles.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar came to Rahul's support after the Hong Kong tie. Speaking to India Today, he said, "I think KL Rahul is a class act. With the kind of performance he has had over the years for India... if you give others a long rope, why can't we give KL Rahul a long rope? He is your vice-captain as well. You give him a long rope because we have all seen what he is capable of in the T20 format."

"He is coming back from an injury, so that rhythm is not quite there but the rhythm will come and when it comes, it will be devastating for the opposition," he added.

On the other hand, former off-spinner Pragyan Ojha said, "He brings experience. He just needs a couple of games and he will be back. He has been there and done that. I am not too concerned because others are doing well and the team is winning. This will rub off on him.

"He is just one knock away from finding his form. The shots that he played, he timed them well. He was not struggling for timing. I felt he was timing them well. So I think he's just there and it's a matter of time," he further asserted.

'If you give others a long rope, why can't we give KL Rahul' - Sunil Gavaskar backs under-fire Indian opener

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was not impressed by captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's performance against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022 clash against Pakistan on Sunday. While India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the game to get off to a winning start, India's top order failed to deliver once again.

KL Rahul was sent packing on a duck in the very first over by young Pakistan pacer Naseem Shah before Rohit Sharma (12) and Virat Kohli (35) added 49 runs for the second wicket. However, the duo looked far from their best. While Rohit was struggling to middle the ball properly, Kohli did play a few dazzling strokes but was rode on luck on a few occasions.

Former India captain Gavaskar said he had always felt luck was not favouring Kohli when he was struggling to score runs in the last few months, however, luck was on his side against Pakistan on Sunday. Kohli did manage to get off to a good start and was settled in the middle but threw away his wicket after poor shot selection against spinner Mohammad Nawaz.

While it was a half-hearted stroke, many felt there was no need for Kohli to go for a big shot immediately after Rohit's dismissal. Gavaskar said both Rohit and Kohli got out to forgettable shots and should have tried to stay longer on the crease and play big knocks as the required rate was not much.

"Today, he had a lot of luck, drop catches, a lot of inside edges, which went so close to the stumps, he had the luck. But he did capitalise on it and played some very fine shots," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

"But one had expected that with the kind of start that he had, he should have got around 60-70. He got out immediately after Rohit got out. Both of them got out to forgettable shots. At that stage, those shots were not necessary as the asking rate wasn't 19 or 20 for them to attempt sixes at that stage.

"It was required for them to get going, get to 70-80 and then maybe go for the big shots. That should be learning from this game," he added.

India's top three wree back in the hut inside 53 runs in the 10th over as the Men in Bluefound themeselves in a triky spot in the run-chase. However, Hardik Pandya combined with Ravidra Jadeja to steer India through and secure a thrilling five-wicket win for the team in the final over.

While Hardik scored an unbeaten 33 off 17 balls, Jadeja scored 35 off 29 bals. The duo shared a 52-run stand for the 5th wicket before Jadeja was dismissed on the first ball of the fina over. However, Hardik showed nerves of steel as he finished off the run-chase in style with a six.

'Those shots were not necessary': Sunil Gavaskar criticises Kohli, Rohit's performance against Pakistan

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar had recently responded to Adam Gilchrist's plea of allowing Indian players to take part in the overseas cricket leagues. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has a strict stance when it comes to Indian players taking part in overseas leagues as active players are barred from doing so.

Only retired players can venture overseas and play T20 leagues around the globe. While the Indian Premier League (IPL) features players from across the globe excluding only Pakistan, Indian stars are not allowed to play overseas leagues like the Big Bash League, The Hundred and the Caribbean Premier League among others.

Former Australia wicket-keeper batter Adam Gilchrist had recently urged the BCCI to allow the Indian players to take part in overseas leagues. Gilchrist, who is regarded as one of the best wicket-keeper batters of all time, had also expressed his concerns over IPL teams buying franchises in different T20 leagues around the globe.

"Some overseas former players have said that the Indian players should be allowed to play the Big Bash or the Hundred. Basically, they want their leagues to have more sponsorship etc. They are concerned about their cricket, which is totally understandable. But when Indian cricket looks to protect its cricket by ensuring that their players stay fresh for their matches and thus restricting them from playing overseas, that is not acceptable to the guys from the ‘old powers,’ Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

The former India captain also slammed the hypocrisy when it comes to the recruitment of the coaching staff in overseas leagues pointing out how IPL at one point had a host of support staff from Australia across various teams but when it comes to overseas leagues like BBL and The Hundred, the sight of an Indian in the coaching setup is a rarity.

"They are talking only about the Indian players being made available for their country’s leagues but not the support staff or others who also can do a wonderful job as the cricketing world has found out over the last half dozen years or so. The IPL, for a while, ran the danger of being called the Australian league with not just the Aussie players dominating the composition of the teams but the coaches and support staff too. It’s never a two-way street for the ‘old powers’ of cricket," he asserted.

Gavaskar gives hard-hitting response to Gilchrist's plea of allowing Indian players to play in foreign leagues

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the 'old powers' of cricket, Australia and England, over their criticism of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gavaskar lashed out at those accusing the IPL for being the disruptor of the cricketing calendar and said the likes of England and Australia should mind their own business and not interfere in India's cricketing matters.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been targeted by many of late over the potential clash of the schedules of the UAE and the South Africa T20 leagues with Australia's Big Bash League and England's The Hundred. BCCI is at the centre of criticism as several IPL owners have bought teams in both the UAE and the South African T20 leagues.

Three teams that will be part of the UAE's ILT20 league have been bought by the owners of IPL franchises, while all six teams that will participate in the South Africa T20 league have also been purchased by IPL team owners. With IPL's influence growing globally, the league has been blamed for disrupting the cricket calendar.

Gavaskar has slammed those criticising the Indian Premier League and said the likes of Australia and England should look after their own cricketing interests and not interfere in India's matters as both have Big Bash and The Hundred have their own separate windows in the annual cricket calendar.

"So, by all means, look after your cricket interests but hey please don’t interfere in ours and tell us what to do. We will look after our interests and do it better than what you tell us to do," Gavaskar wrote in his&nbsp;column for Sportstar slamming Australia and England.

Gavaskar suggested both England and Australia cricket boards are unhappy that the clash of schedules of the various T20 leagues will see some top players from around the globe opting to play in UAE and South Africa instead of heading to the Big Bash or The Hundred.

"It’s been amusing to read that the Indian Premier League is once again seen as a disruptor of the cricketing calendar of other international teams. The moment the news about the South African T20 league and the UAE T20 league came out, the ‘old powers’ started squirming and got their apologists to have a go at the IPL," Gavaskar wrote in his column.

"The IPL has got a 75-day window in the international calendar and that’s simply because, thankfully, there are some administrators who can read the tea leaves and know it’s better to let their players play in the cricket world’s richest league than hold them back with some international commitments. The England &amp; Wales Cricket Board has created a window for its showpiece event The Hundred when the England team don’t play any international matches."

"The Australians, too, have scheduled their Big Bash when their contracted players will be available to play. But it’s worrying them that the UAE and the South African T20 leagues are scheduled around the same time and there’s the danger of some of their players opting to play there instead of the Big Bash," he added.

IPL is currently the biggest and the most expensive T20 league in the world. It is arguably the best domestic cricket tournament in the world attracting top talent from across the globe. 'Don't tell us what to do': Sunil Gavaskar lashes out at 'old powers' England, Australia for IPL criticism

Since the early 2010s, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been the mainstays of Team India. While both the cricketers have a huge following, their fans often engage in a tussle on social media platforms regarding who is the best among the duo.

However, when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer was asked to comment on the Kohli vs Rohit debate on social media, Arun Dhumal gave an interesting take.&nbsp;

"We never think about it. It is the passion of fans that drives them and this debate. When you are attached to an emotion, then you tend to say all that. And social media is a platform where you can talk about anything. They speak their heart out because there are no restrictions. That is why people think it persists. We saw the same with Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, or later between Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. On social media, matters amplify to an extent that people believe all this is true," Dhumal stated in a video posted on senior journalist Vimal Kumar's YouTube channel.

Dhumal also spoke about the much-talked about Kohli vs BCCI captaincy saga. "As far as the issue of captaincy is concerned, it was his call. He decided that&nbsp;mujhe ab nahi karni hai captaincy&nbsp;(that I don’t want to captain). It is possible that someone feels it’s best to do it after the World Cup, but that is their point of view. But he wanted to quit, and it was purely his decision. And we respected it. He has contributed so much to Indian cricket that everyone in the cricket board respects him. We would like to see Virat in action on the ground," he added.

Both Rohit and Kohli are indispensable to the Indian cricket team and are expected to reunite for India's upcoming Asia Cup 2022 campaign. At present, Kohli has been rested for India's ongoing white-ball tour of West Indies.

India have produced several big cricketers over the years. Sunil Gavaskar is one of them, in a list comprising many stalwarts such as MK Pataudi, Kapil Dev, Mohinder Amarnath, Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammad Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and the likes.

Gavaskar's successful international career is remembered and lauded to date, where he was particularly impressive in the longest format of the game ending with 10,122 runs with 34 centuries. At one point, he had his century-tally in Tests was the most by any batter before Sachin Tendulkar surpassed him in 2005. Gavaskar was also part of Kapil-led India's historic 1983 World Cup-winning team and led India to a title win the World Championship of cricket as well.

England's Leicester cricket ground set to be named after Little Master Sunil Gavaskar

Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya are being praised by one and all ever since India won the third and final ODI versus England, in Manchester, to claim the series 2-1. The duo got together with Men in Blue tottering at 72/4 in pursuit of 260.

India lost their famed top 3 -- captain&nbsp; Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli -- for cheap (at 38 for 3) before Suryakumar Yadav also followed suit, leaving India at 72 for 4. Thus, the duo steadied the ship, played sensibly, ran well between wickets and took on the bowlers one by one to take India to a stunning five-wicket win in the series decider. While Pant remained unbeaten on 125, Hardik fell for a 55-ball 71 after claiming 4/24 with the ball.

Speaking on&nbsp;Sports Tak, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Pant-Hardik and was even optimistic of them replicating the success of legendary Indian batting pair of MS Dhoni-Yuvraj Singh. "It can definitely happen. The kind of sixes Yuvraj and Dhoni used to hit, the way they steadied the innings, the way they ran between the wicket, Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant can be that pair for India. And just like Dhoni and Yuvraj used to hit sixes, I hope Pandya and Pant can win the hearts of cricket fans."

'Just like Dhoni & Yuvraj...: Gavaskar lauds Pant-Pandya, compares duo with legendary Indian batting pair

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has offered to help Indian superstar Virat Kohli recover from his poor form amid his ongoing lean patch in international cricket. Kohli has struggled with the willow for Team India across all formats and has been far from consistent. His last century in international cricket came way back in November 2019 and the batting maestro has since failed to reach the triple-figure mark.

After a shambolic campaign for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 22, Kohli made his comeback for India in the team's recently-concluded tour of England. While he was expected to spark a turnaround, his woeful form continued in both Tests and limited-overs formats.

Kohli managed to score only 75 runs in six innings for India against England in what was a disastrous tour for the senior India batter. Several former cricketers and experts also raised questions over Kohli's spot in India's T20I squad ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia this year.

Amid his ongoing lean patch, Gavaskar wants to come to Kohli's rescue by offering him some crucial advice which he believes can help the senior India batter. Gavaskar, who himself faced troubles against the moving ball during his playing days as an opening batter, said he can tell Kohli changes&nbsp;which he can bring&nbsp;in his game to counter the issue and spark a turnaround.

"If I had about 20 minutes with him, I would be able to tell him the things he might have to do. It might help him, I am not saying it will help him but it could, particularly with regards to that off-stump line," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

"Having been an opening batter, having been troubled by that line, there are certain things that you try and do. If I get 20 minutes with him, I might be able to tell him," he added.

While Gavaskar insisted Kohli has been facing trouble in playing deliveries bowled to the off-stump line, he explained how his bad form has resulted in the senior Indian batter playing some poor shots which have cost him his wicket.

"It goes back to the fact that his first mistake turns out to be his last. Again, just because he is not amongst the runs, there is this anxiety to play at every delivery because that is what batters feel, they have got to score. You look to play at deliveries that you otherwise won't. But he has gotten out to good deliveries as well on this particular tour," Gavaskar explained.

Also Read: Kohli reacts as Stokes retires from ODIs: 'You're the most competitive bloke I've played against' Amid his ongoing lean patch, Gavaskar wants to come to Kohli's rescue by offering him some crucial advice which he believes can help the senior India batter. Gavaskar, who himself faced troubles against the moving ball during his playing days as an opening batter, said he can tell Kohli changes which he can bring in his game to counter the issue and spark a turnaround. Also Read: Djokovic reacts to Kevin Pietersen's Instagram post backing under-fire Virat Kohli While Gavaskar insisted Kohli has been facing trouble in playing deliveries bowled to the off-stump line, he explained how his bad form has resulted in the senior Indian batter playing some poor shots which have cost him his wicket.

If I get 20 minutes with Virat, I might be able to help him, says Sunil Gavaskar amid Kohli's poor form

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the Indian players for opting for rest during national team duty and not considering taking a break while representing their respective franchises during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gavaskar's comments have come at a time when the Indian team management and the selectors have been facing the ire for constantly resting senior players who are struggling with their form.

There have also been reports that some senior players asked to be rested from the upcoming five-match T20I series against West Indies. Captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli among others have already been rested for the ODI series against West Indies and it remains to be seen if they will feature in the T20 squad for the tour of the Caribbean.

Gavaskar has questioned players' commitment to playing for their country amid the resting policy. The Indian legend said he is absolutely against players taking a rest from international cricket and questioned why don't the senior Indian players take a break during the IPL instead of resting when playing for the country.

The board needs to draw a line if they want to be professional," Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.

Both Kohli and Rohit have not enjoyed the best of form and have struggled to score runs consistently in the last few months. The duo had a shambolic campaign in IPL 2022 for their respective teams and are yet to notch up a big knock for the Indian team and have&nbsp;failed in the last few games.

With the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia just a few months away from getting underway, both Kohli and Rohit's form has become a huge concern for the Indian team. Many have even questioned Kohli's spot in India's T20I side suggesting that the senior batter should be dropped from the team.

You can't rest in IPL but want to rest when you play for India: Sunil Gavaskar slams Team India stars

BCCI's rest policy has become a major talking point in the Indian cricket fraternity. While injury and Covid concerns have been a reason for India having as many as six captains in 2022 so far, the constant change in team and leadership has also been due to two teams playing simultaneously -- which was the case during the Ireland tour and the national side's ongoing trip to&nbsp;England.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With India's cricketing calendar being quite hectic, as is the case usually, the BCCI selection committee has also rested star players at regular intervals, leaving many former cricketers miffed. The latest to join the bandwagon is Little Master Sunil Gavaskar. The former Indian opener-turned-commentator feels players shouldn't be given rest so frequently, especially for T20I series.

"See I do not agree with this concept of players resting. Not at all. 'You don't take rest during IPL, then why ask for it while playing for India? I don't agree with it. You will have to play for India. Don't talk about rest. There are only 20 overs in an innings in T20. That does not take any toll on your body. In Test matches, the mind and the body take a toll, I get that. But I don't think there is much problem in T20 cricket,"said Gavaskar on&nbsp;Sports Tak.

"I honestly feel that the BCCI needs to look into this concept of rest. All the Grade A cricketers have received very good contracts. They receive payment for every match. Tell me if there is any company whose CEO, or MDs get so much time off? I feel that if Indian cricket is to become more professional, a line needs to be drawn."

India's ODI series versus hosts England, which gets underway on July 12 (Tuesday), will be followed by a three-match 50-over series versus West Indies, in the Caribbean island. Hence, regular captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli won't be part of the squad, along with some other star players, but are expected to be a part of the five T20Is versus the two-time winners which follows suit.

Virat Kohli's form remains a cause of concern and a huge talking point in the Indian cricket fraternity. With the 2022 T20 World Cup right around the corner, many former cricketers and experts have shared their views regarding King Kohli, who has struggled to be at his usual best since the start of IPL 2022 edition and his century-drought continues since late 2019.&nbsp;

After the conclusion of the India-England T20Is, which India won 2-1, former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar joined the bandwagon and commented on Kohli's form. While some have even questioned his place in the T20I line-up, Gavaskar came in Kohli's defence.

In the England T20Is, Kohli was given rest for the series opener -- which commenced after a one-day break post the Edgbaston Test -- and he returned to the playing XI for the remaining two matches. However, the 33-year-old managed only scores of 1 and 11. It will be interesting to see if Kohli is part of India's five T20Is versus West Indies, in the Caribbean island, which will kick off during the end of July.&nbsp;

'When Rohit does not score runs, no one talks about it' - Sunil Gavaskar comes in defence of Virat Kohli

The last time Virat Kohli played in England,&nbsp;he was India's full-time captain. During the 2021 English summer, Kohli-led India gained an unassailable 2-1 lead in the five-match series versus hosts England before the fifth and final Test got rescheduled due to Covid concerns in the Indian camp. Since then, Kohli stepped down as the Test and T20I captain and was sacked as ODI skipper. He&nbsp;will now play the series finale versus England under a&nbsp;captain (Jasprit Bumrah) and vice-captain (Rishabh Pant) who made their Test debuts&nbsp;under him.

On Friday (July 01), when&nbsp;Bumrah-led India take on the field versus Ben Stokes' England, the 33-year-old will have a tough job in hand to lead India's charge with the bat with no regular skipper Rohit Sharma as the visitors aim for their first-ever red-ball series triumph in England since 2007. As Kohli gears up for the series finale, the right-hander is just 40 runs away from joining batting icons Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar in an elite&nbsp;list.

If Kohli manages to score 40, or more, runs in the Edgbaston Test, he will join the elusive club of Indian batters to have scored 2000-plus runs versus England in the purest format. Till now, only Tendulkar and Gavaskar have achieved this feat. Kohli has 1,960 runs versus England from 48 innings in 27 Tests, at an average of 43.55. He has five centuries, nine fifties and six ducks versus the Three Lions.

Team India is busy finalising their combination for the 2022 T20 World Cup, set to be held in Australia later this year. Before the marquee tournament, India still have to play plenty of series&nbsp;as they can tinker with their team combination in order to finalise their ideal XI.&nbsp;

A second-stringed Rishabh Pant-led Indian team recently played South Africa in a five-match T20I series at home, which ended in a 2-2 stalemate with the final match being abandoned due to persistent rain in Bengaluru on June 19. Despite a disappointing end to the series, India had plenty of positives with the form and performances of Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

After the series, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar&nbsp;mentioned a star player who could be one of Rohit Sharma's trump cards in the forthcoming T20 World Cup Down Under. Gavaskar hailed Harshal Patel as the fast-bowling all-rounder who impressed bowling in tough situations in the SA series and returned with&nbsp;seven wickets in four innings at&nbsp;12.57 and an economy rate of 7.23. He was, thus, the highest wicket-taker in the series.

Thus, Gavaskar told Star Sports, “He will be one of the trumps cards because you have Bhuvneshwar, Shami and Bumrah as well. Brilliant for a skipper to have someone like him to depend on, He can come in and bowl may be even in the powerplay where people are now going with change of pace. So yes he certainly should be part of the group."

Former SA captain Graeme Smith, who was also part of the same panel, agreed with Gavaskar and added, “He has been excellent. Nobody skills in the death overs with the slower balls...but I feel from game 3 he found his right length and picked up wickets and kept the pressure on the South Africans. He has all the skills as an all-rounder bowler and is a big asset to the team and handles pressure very well and is a clear thinker under pressure."

Team India is busy finalising their combination for the 2022 T20 World Cup, set to be held in Australia later this year. Before the marquee tournament, India still have to play plenty of series as they can tinker with their team combination in order to finalise their ideal XI. After the series, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar mentioned a star player who could be one of Rohit Sharma's trump cards in the forthcoming T20 World Cup Down Under. Gavaskar hailed Harshal Patel as the fast-bowling all-rounder who impressed bowling in tough situations in the SA series and returned with seven wickets in four innings at 12.57 and an economy rate of 7.23. So yes he certainly should be part of the group." Nobody skills in the death overs with the slower balls...but I feel from game 3 he found his right length and picked up wickets and kept the pressure on the South Africans. He has all the skills as an all-rounder bowler and is a big asset to the team and handles pressure very well and is a clear thinker under pressure." 'He'll be one of the trumps cards' - Gavaskar feels India star will be integral to Rohit's T20 WC plans

India played an intense five-match T20I series versus South Africa at home, which concluded on Sunday evening (June 19). With the series levelled at 2-2, both sides had all to play for before the final encounter, at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, which ended in no-result with only 3.3 overs of play possible due to persistent rain.

Despite the series being shared, India had quite a few positives with the form and performances of Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Harshal Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, etc. as they continue to fix their final combination for the 2022 T20 World Cup, set to be held in Australia later this year. While a lot of players are still fighting hard to cement a spot in the final squad, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar was asked about veteran Shikhar Dhawan's chances.

"No. I don't see his name popping up. If it had to pop up, it would have been in this squad. A lot of guys have gone to England and he could have been in this squad. If he is not in this squad, I don't see him ending in the mix (for T20 World Cup)," Gavaskar said in an interaction on&nbsp;Star Sports&nbsp;during the Bengaluru T20I.

For the unversed, Dhawan has played 68 T20Is for India, scoring&nbsp;1,759 runs at 126.36. While he has had seven consecutive IPL seasons with over 400-plus runs, his strike rate was deemed to be an issue for the Men in Blue. Even though Dhawan improved his strike rate in IPL, does well for India in&nbsp;ICC events and has has a lot of experience overall, he has fallen behind in the pecking order with the emergence of some young and dashing openers.&nbsp; Thus, he missed being a part of India's squad in the 2021 edition and is likely to remain out of favour for this year's showpiece event as well, which will take place Down Under.

Don't see his name popping up: Sunil Gavaskar dismisses India star's chances of making it to T20 WC squad

Former India captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar slammed Rishabh Pant after yet another disappointing outing for India's stand-in captain in the 4th T20I against South Africa on Friday (June 17). India defeated South Africa comprehensively by 82 runs to level the five-match series 2-2 but Pant failed to impress once again as he was dismissed on 17 off 23 balls.

Batting first, India were in deep trouble after losing their top three inside the first seven overs. Pant, who arrived at the crease at number four was expected to steady the ship and build a strong partnership with Hardik Pandya, who was at the other end. However, the Indian skipper could only manage 17 off 23 balls.

He got out trying to play a rash shot on an outside off delivery bowled by Dwaine Pretorious as he was caught by Keshav Maharaj. However, Dinesh Karthik's sensational 55 off 27 balls and Hardik's 46 helped India post a fighting total of 169 runs on the board before Avesh Khan picked up a four-wicket haul to run through the Proteas batting line-up and bundle them out for 87 runs.

Nonetheless, Pant's poor show with the bat continued in the series amid concerns over his consistency. Gavaskar pointed out how Pant has been dismissed in a similar fashion in the last few games against South Africa in the ongoing T20I series and has not learnt from his mistakes in the past.

“He hasn’t learned. He hasn’t learned from his previous three dismissals. They throw wide, and he keeps going for it. He can’t throw enough muscle on that. He has got to stop looking to go aerial that far outside the off-stump,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports as he slammed Pant for getting out once again after playing a rash shot.

“There is no way he’s going to get enough on it. It has gone to short-third! They all plan it, South African bowlers and Temba Bavuma just bowl wide outside the off-stump and you will get him,” the former India captain added.

Gavaskar further claimed Pant has been dismissed as many as ten times in a similar way this year and has not yet realised that he will not be able to generate enough power for such a shot as the ball is bowled too far away from him by the pacers.

“10 times, he has been dismissed wide outside off-stump (in T20s in 2022). Some of them would’ve been called wide if he hadn’t made contact with it. Because he’s so far away, he has to reach out for it. He will never get enough power on it. To keep getting out in the same series in the same manner, for a captain of the Indian team, that’s not a good sign,” said Gavaskar.

'He hasn't learned': Sunil Gavaskar slams Rishabh Pant after yet another disappointing show vs South Africa

Joe Root has been in unbelievable form for England in the purest format since the start of 2021. Since then, he has added 10 more tons to his overall century-tally in whites and equalled with other Fab Four members such as Virat Kohli and Steve Smith to now have 27 Test hundreds apiece. During the ongoing England-New Zealand Tests, Root has been in sublime form and also crossed the 10,000-run mark during the series opener at Lord's.

Root has so far amassed two big hundreds in the NZ series and, hence, has earned applause from all corners. Recently, the former England Test skipper also surpassed Sunil Gavaskar's run-tally in the format (10,112) after becoming&nbsp;only the 14th player, overall, and second Englishman to reach the elusive 10,000-run mark. For the unversed, he is now the only active cricketer closest to Sachin Tendulkar's run-tally (15,921), who remains the leading run-scorer in Tests. Thus, Gavaskar opined on Root's chances of surpassing SRT's magical figure.&nbsp;

"That is an insurmountable record because we are talking about another almost 6000 runs, which means you would have to score about 1000 runs or 800 runs over the next 8 years for you to get there," Sunil Gavaskar said during an interaction with India Today. The Little Master, however, added&nbsp;that at 31, Root still has plenty of cricket left on his side and, thus, has a slim chance of achieving the target. "Joe Root has got age on his side. He certainly can if he can maintain that enthusiasm and go on," added Gavaskar.

At present, Root-starrer England is involved in a humdinger of a second and penultimate Test versus New Zealand at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. At lunch on the finay day, England are 36 for 1 in pursuit of a challenging 299-run target set by the Tom Latham-led Black Caps. The series is currently led by England following their five-wicket win in the series opener.
