The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been inconsistent so far in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition. After five games, they have won and lost two each and occupy the sixth position in the points table. Ahead of their away game, versus the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar lavished huge praise on CSK and lauded MS Dhoni's captaincy.

Gavaskar heaped praise on Dhoni on how he manages to get CSK out of tough situations. In IPL 2023, Dhoni has faced only 27 balls but scored 58 runs at a whopping strike rate of 214.81. He almost won his side the game versus Rajasthan Royals (RR), in Chennai, as they fell short by three runs despite needing 54 off the last 18 balls.

"Chennai Super Kings know how to get out of tough situations. This has been possible only under MS Dhoni's captaincy," Gavaskar said on Star Sports' Cricket Live Show.

During CSK's home game versus the Royals, Dhoni also led in his 200th game for the Yellow Army. In this regard, Gavaskar hailed Dhoni's longevity and said there will never be a captain like him in the future. "Captaining 200 matches is very difficult. Captaining so many matches is a burden and it could have affected his performance as well. But Mahi is different. He is a different captain. There hasn't been a captain like him and there will never be one like him in the future," Gavaskar pointed out.

CSK will face the Faf du Plessis-led RCB on Monday evening (April 17) and aim to add two more points in their tally and move up in the overall standings in this year's IPL season.

'They know how to get out of tough situations': Sunil Gavaskar on CSK, lauds MS Dhoni's captaincy

Mumbai Indians lost their two opening matches to start the IPL 2023 and the finally broke the losing streak in their third match, beating downtrodden Delhi Capitals by six wickets.

Skipper Rohit Sharma led from the front with a sublime fifty as Mumbai chased a modest target of 173 with relative ease against DC. The Indians, however, will be keen to continue their winning run against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar is eager to see how they do that.

"The upcoming match is going to be very interesting for Mumbai because after breaking the long streak of defeat, there must have been a change in the mindset of the Mumbai team and now it will be interesting to see what kind of game they show to maintain their winning streak," said Sunil Gavaskar while speaking on Star Sports' Cricket Live program.

Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, have had a mixed IPL 2023 so far with two wins and two losses in four matches this season. After losing their first match against Punjab Kings, KKR bounced back in style, beating RCB and GT by 81 runs and three wickets, respectively.

KKR, however, lost their fourth match against Sunrisers Hyderabad but not before their skipper Nitish Rana gave them a scare. Former India bowler Harbhajan Singh, in particular, is very impressed with Rana's batting and captaincy both.

Speaking on Star Sports' Cricket Live Harbhajan Singh said, "Nitish Rana has led KKR from the front in the last two games. His timing has been immaculate, he attacked spinners and pacers with equal ease. He is batting well and even making the captaincy moves brilliantly."

Both the team will face of each other on Sunday, April 16 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai with an aim to strengthen their position on the points table.

IPL 2023: Former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar eager to see MI's approach against KKR

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will host the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match 17 of the IPL 2023 edition on Wednesday evening (April 12), at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. After three games, CSK have won twice and occupy the fifth position in the points table. For the Yellow Army, the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, Mitchell Santner and Tushar Deshpande have done well but they have plenty of injury concerns (including that of Ben Stokes and Deepak Chahar).

Ahead of their face-off versus Sanju Samson-led RR, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar wants Dhoni to promote himself higher in the batting order. In the two outings in IPL 2023, Dhoni has come out to bat at No. 8 and returned with scores of 14* (7) and 3-ball 12. Dhoni has looked in good touch and slammed as many as four boundaries (one four and three sixes). Thus, Gavaskar wants Dhoni to make use of his good form as he feels 'he is capable of scoring big runs'.

"I am hoping MS Dhoni promotes himself higher in the batting order. So that he gets to play more than two or three overs in the games. He can make that difference for CSK with his batting because he is capable of scoring big runs," Gavaskar said while speaking on Star Sports.

Dhoni will create history when he walks out on the field in CSK-RR clash in Chennai. He is set to play his 200th game as CSK captain, becoming the first-ever captain to reach the milestone. In 213 IPL games as captain, Dhoni has won 125 and losing 87 of them with a win percent of 58.96. Under him, CSK have won the IPL on four occasions and are aiming for their fifth title in what is expected to be Dhoni's last IPL season.

IPL 2023: Sunil Gavaskar hopes CSK skipper MS Dhoni 'promotes himself' in batting order

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by a whopping 81-run margin in their first home game of IPL 2023, on Thursday evening (April 06). After a seven-run loss (DLS method), to Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their season-opener, Nitish Rana-led KKR made a spirited comeback from reeling at 89 for 5 to post 204/7 and dismissed RCB for a paltry 123 in 17.4 overs.

While KKR spinners -- Sunil Narine (2 for 16), Varun Chakaravarthy (4 for 15), and Suyash Sharma (3 for 30) -- starred with the ball by sharing nine scalps, it was pace-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur who set the game with a blistering 29-ball 68 and also returned with 1 for 15. After the flop show of KKR's top order, Shardul went bonkers from one end and stitched a match-winning 103-run stand with Rinku Singh (33-ball 46).

KKR eventually won by a huge margin with Nitish Rana marshalling his troops nicely, he was slammed by Little Master Sunil Gavaskar for his poor shot selection. The KKR stand-in captain managed a 5-ball 1 after he went for a reverse sweep, off Michael Bracewell, when his side was already reduced to 46 for 2 after six overs and was in need of a big partnership. Thus, Gavaskar slammed Rana and said on-air, "What kind of shot was that from KKR captain? He didn't connect at all. And as a captain, I think that shot was completely avoidable."

After winning his first game as an IPL skipper, Rana will breathe a sigh of relief. However, he will be wary of the fact that KKR needs big runs from him in order to keep going ahead in the tournament.

At the post-match presentation, Rana said on Thursday evening, "In the previous match, there were a lot of positives. We were seven down but still we fought. Today we showed great fight. Gurbaz played a brilliant knock at the top of the order and Thakur changed the complexion of the game. Credit should also be given to Rinku as he played second fiddle to Thakur and paced his innings well. Umesh and Southee started decently with the ball. Then, our spinners bowled really well. Taking wickets regularly was great for us. Suyash is a confident young man and he has belief in himself. He made his chance count and it was great to see him bowl that way."

KKR will next face the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on Sunday afternoon (April 09).

IPL 2023: 'What was that, completely avoidable shot' - Gavaskar BLASTS KKR skipper Nitish Rana in RCB tie

Former India batter Sunil Gavaskar heaped great praise on Tamil Nadu and Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudharsan after his match-winning knock of 62 not out off just 48 balls against Delhi Capitals.

"What you saw with Sai Sudharsan, even in the previous game, is confidence. Yes, he played a few games in the IPL last year. He got a few opportunities, he played a couple of good 30-plus innings," said Gavaskar.

Thanks to Sudharsan, GT overcame early blows dealt by DC while chasing a moderate 163 and eventually won by six wickets to register their second consecutive win in the league. Gavaskar talked about how Sudharsan looked confident and gave the impression that he is very comfortable.

"The other day also... the confidence with which he came into bat. From the first delivery, he looked as if he belonged there. Some players give you the impression that they are comfortable even at the highest level," added the former India opener.

The highlight of southpaw's innings was three sixes he hit off DC's South African pacer Anrich Nortje who was bowling thunderbolts on a lively Delhi pitch.

"He showed he is ready for the challenge. He was looking forward to the Nortje challenge. He realised he wouldn't be able to counter-attack Nortje with the speed that he was bowling. Later on when Nortje came for the second spell, he hit him for two sixes. Now that's smart cricket. Look, at this stage, I need to repair the innings, so he was watchful. In this format, lot of times everybody thinks you have to go over the top," added Gavaskar.

The former India batter also said that he feels Sudharsan is ready for big challenges and has all the markings to reach the very top level.

"It tells you he is ready for bigger challenges. He has got to not think now that he has done it. He has got to say to himself that there are steps to be taken before he reaches the very top level. But he has got all the makings. He is a top fielder as well, which is always a plus. It was his temperament that shone through. I have always believed that it's the temperament that separates the men from the boys. He has all the potential to become a top player soon," said Sunil Gavaskar.

IPL 2023: Sunil Gavaskar heaps praise on GT's potential 'TOP PLAYER'

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have lit up the atmosphere in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition. After losing an intensly-fought season-opener to defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT), on March 31, the four-time champions Yellow Army locked horns with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai -- their first game at the Chepauk after 1,426 days (following IPL 2019).

The crowd at the Chepauk gave a rousing reception to the Dhoni-led CSK brigade in their memorable homecoming after 2019. Asked to bat first, Chennai rode on Ruturaj Gaikwad's 57, Devon Conway's 47, Shivam Dube's 16-ball 27, Moeen Ali's 13-ball 19, Ambati Rayudu's 14-ball 27* and Dhoni's 3-ball 12 to post 217 for 7. While CSK bowlers were erratic, they managed to defend the total as Lucknow were restricted for 205 for 7. Thus, it was a memorable return to Chepauk for CSK.

Dhoni gave plenty to cheer for the fans as well. The crowd waited patiently for him to come out to bat. There was a sigh of relief for many when Ravindra Jadeja got out in the final over with five balls to spare. Dhoni played only three deliveries but blasted two back-to-back sixes and returned with 12 (3). Even in the opening game, CSK skipper made 14* off seven balls, striking at 200.

After the clash, former Pakistan captain and keeper-batter Rashid Latif hailed Dhoni. Latif was asked to share his views on the '41-year-old youngster' by Nauman Niaz. To this, the former cricketer said on the Youtube channel Caught Behind, "He has scored 5000 runs in IPL alone. Dhoni has always had a golden template. His history has been written with gold - for India, for world cricket. You and I can say whatever we like but it won't make a difference. He is easily the greatest ever Indian captain, and also a wicketkeeper batter. There is no doubt there."

"Look at the way he batted. He faced just 2-3 balls and showed what he has always been capable of. He is the most famous player. We have seen Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, even Virat Kohli. But Dhoni, and the way he conducts himself on the field and the following that he has, there is a different vibe and intensity to it altogether. Outstanding," added Latif.

'We've seen SRT, Gavaskar, Kohli, but Dhoni is...': Ex-Pak captain hails CSK skipper for his IPL 2023 heroics

Former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar offered an absurd suggestion to curb the wide and no-balls bowled by bowlers while on air during the CSK vs LSG match in IPL 2023.

Gavaskar, while commentating with Ian Bishop and Simon Doull, said during the 17th over of the chase that 'there should be a provision of a free-hit after two back-to-back wide-balls.'

Gavaskar said that a free-hit for wide-balls would force bowlers to focus on lines. The two commentators, however, immediately responded that it's a 'stupid thing' to say in front of bowlers. CSK bowlers bowled 13 wides and three no-balls during the LSG's chase including an 11-ball over by Tushar Deshpande in the powerplay. Chennai skipper MS Dhoni was also not pleased by these extra balls and issued a stern warning to his pace bowlers.

"They'll have to bowl no no-balls and less wides. We are bowling too many extra deliveries and need to cut them out otherwise they'll be playing under a new captain," said Dhoni at the post match presentation.

CSK, nonetheless, went on to win the match in their Chepauk homecoming after nearly four years. Batting first, CSK were provided a belligerent start by openers RUturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway. Gaikwad, especially, was lethal as he scored his second consecutive fifty in IPL that too off just 25 balls.

CSK eventually managed 217/5 in their 20 overs. For LSG, leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi and pacer Mark Wood were the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets each.

During the chase, LSG got off to a flyer, thanks to West Indian opener Kyle Mayers, who scored a nonchalant 22-ball 53, his second in two matches too. CSK spinners, however, soon derailed the chase with three wickets with Moeen Ali bagging four-for.

LSG eventually fell short by 12 runs in a 400+ run fest at the Chepauk, allowing CSK to complete a dream homecoming.

Former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar offered an absurd suggestion to curb the wide and no-balls bowled by bowlers while on air during the CSK vs LSG match in IPL 2023. Gavaskar, while commentating with Ian Bishop and Simon Doull, said during the 17th over of the chase that 'there should be a provision of a free-hit after two back-to-back wide-balls.' Gavaskar said that a free-hit for wide-balls would force bowlers to focus on lines. The two commentators, however, immediately responded that it's a 'stupid thing' to say in front of bowlers. IPL 2023: Sunil Gavaskar makes ABSURD suggestion to curb wide and no-balls | READ

Team India players are currently involved in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition. Nonetheless, all the focus is on this year's ODI World Cup (ODI WC), which will be held in India in October-November. India will gear up to face Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, soon after IPL 16 in early June, before the 50-over showpiece event kicks off later this year.

It is to be noted that India remains one of the top teams across formats but have not won an ICC title since 2013. Under MS Dhoni, India last won an ICC event during the 2013 Champions Trophy. Since then, they have reached the final of the 2014 T20 World Cup (T20 WC), semi-finals of the 2015 and 2019 ODI WCs and semis of the 2016 and 2022 editions of the T20 WC. In addition, they played the inaugural WTC final where they lost to New Zealand.

Thus, all eyes are on Rohit Sharma & Co. to replicate Dhoni-led India's 2011 batch's ODI WC success later this year. Ahead of the showpiece event, Indian team is preparing and gelling well -- with several positives -- but are dealing with regular injury concerns and questions have also been raised on the frequent rests given to key players. In this regard, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar issued a stern warning to the Men in Blue.

"In a World Cup year any match missed means preparation gets hampered as the balance of the team gets affected. Another failure to win a World Cup will have repercussions that could possibly end a few international careers and that should be a red flag for those talking burnout and missing games for India." Gavaskar recently wrote in his column for Mid-Day

If you want to be rested, you need to reduce your guarantees. Then you take rest, because you don't want to play. But how can anyone say that I don't want to play for the Indian team. Which is why I do not agree to the concept," Gavaskar has previously stated.

Another failure to win a World Cup could end few international careers: Gavaskar's stern warning to Team India

Former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar took a cheeky dig at Delhi Capitals' captain David Warner at the post-match presentation ceremony. Delhi had played against Lucknow on Saturday and lost by 50 runs but Warner was confident that they'll be better in their next match at home in Delhi.

Sunil Gavaskar, however, made a sly remark after Warner said that he was in Delhi last in 2011. Notably, the Australian had played the second Test in Delhi during the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar trophy. Here's how the conversation went:

David Warner: We go back to Delhi in front of our home crowd. I know it's a batting wicket. The last time, I was there in Delhi back in 2011, it was low and slow. Now I saw a bit of green grass on that surface. There will be a bit of dew in the night. If we can get an all-round good wicket, it would be fantastic.

Sunil Gavaskar: David last time you were there in Delhi in 2011-12? You were there last month!

David Warner: Yeah, I know that. That was a different pitch, it was a red ball. Let's forget that.

Another presenter Simon Doull then chipped and called Gavaskar's remark cheeky as the trio burst out laughing.

Delhi Capitals (DC), meanwhile, had a horrid start to their campaign as they lost to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 50 runs both teams' season opener on April 1. Delhi were in command during their bowling for most times but some death-over flourish have LSG 193 to defend, which proved too much for Delhi in the end.

Delhi skipper Warner, however, had a decent day with the bat as he scored 48-ball 56, highest from his side. Chasing 194, Delhi could manage only 143/9 in their 20 overs. Apart from Warner Rilee Rossouw scored 30 runs. Capitals will next play against Titans on April 4.

IPL 2023: Sunil Gavaskar takes a CHEEKY dig at DC's David Warner after match against LSG

Cricket is great leveller – watch how things panned out for India’s star T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav lately. Having achieved numerous records in the past year in the shortest format, Surya failed to replicate even half of it in the extended version of T20s – the ODIs. On Wednesday, following his third first-ball-duck against Australia in the series, former India legend Sunil Gavaskar came to his aid, advising him to now concentrate on the IPL and let everything else go.

While Mitchell Starc trapped him in front of wickets In the most similar manner in the first two ODIs, incoming spin-bowling all-rounder Ashton Agar clean bowled him on yet another first-ball zero. It meant Surya didn’t even touch the ball in any of the ODIs and entered an unwanted record list of Indian batters who got out on a duck in three successive games in the past, including the great Sachin Tendulkar.

IND vs AUS: Former legend advises 'bizarre record-holder in ODIs' Suryakumar Yadav following latest slump

India cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has pointed out faults in Suryakumar Yadav’s batting technique following his successive failure against Mitchell Starc in the ODI series. Much like how he got out plumb in the first ODI at the Wankhede Stadium, Starc got Surya trapped in front in the same manner in Sunday’s game on a first-ball duck. Following Australia's massive ten-wicket win over India in Vizag, Gavaskar suggested the struggling India batter should work on his stance and technique work with the batting coach.

The top-ranked T20I batter in the world, Suryakumar, failed to replicate his form in the extended white-ball format. With both Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant out due to injuries, India roped in Surya to fill the number four slot – only for him to face the wrath for the technical deficiency in his batting. As he couldn’t move his feet and bring the bat down in time to not allow the in-swinging delivery to trap him in front, Surya was left wondering what further could go wrong than to get out in the same manner on the first delivery in two straight matches.

Following his dismissal, he looked dejected, so were the fans and the commentators sitting inside.

Known to be among the most-technically sound batters in world cricket, Gavaskar pin-pointed where SKY is struggling in ODIs. Speaking to Star Sports after the ODI that saw India losing with 234 balls remaining, Gavaskar said Suryakumar’s stance is an open one – which could work well in T20s but not in ODIs. The batting great added Surya must work on that and minor technical difficulties he is facing with the batting coach and try and improve it before it gets late for him.

“He (Suryakumar) is facing technical difficulties. Also, his stance is an open one. It is good for T20 cricket because any delivery that is overpitched, he can flick it for a six. But here, when the ball is placed right near the foot, with this stance, the bat will definitely come across. It cannot come straight. Hence, if the ball turns inside, he will face difficulty. He needs to spend time with the batting coach on how to come out of this," Gavaskar said.

Meanwhile, not only Suryakumar, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli also struggled with the incoming deliveries in Vizag on Sunday as they both got trapped right in front of the wickets.

As the three-match ODI series is tied at 1-1 as things stand, the final One-Dayer in Chennai on March 22nd will play as the decider.

The 2023 ICC ODI World Cup is scheduled to be held in India later this year and former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar says that India will have a change of captaincy after the marquee event.

The ex-India opener, while talking to Star Sports, has predicted that all-rounder Hardik Pandya will succeed Rohit Sharma as the next skipper.

"What you see with Hardik Pandya as a captain is a sense of comfort with the rest of the team. Maybe, it’s the way he handles the players, puts his arm around the players. He just seems to give the players a sense of comfort. That’s so important to give a player a sense of comfort so that he can go and play his natural game. I think he encourages them, which is a wonderful sign," said Gavaskar.

While Rohit Sharma is set to lead the Indian side in the World Cup, Hardik Pandya will lead India in the first ODI against Australia in Mumbai on March 17. Rohit will be back to lead the side in the next two matches of the three-match series on March 19 and 22 in Vishakhapatnam and Chennai, respectively.

Hardik has impressed everyone with his captaincy after he led the IPL side Gujarat Titans to victory in their maiden season in 2022 and subsequently led India in a few limited-overs matches.

"I have been very impressed with his captaincy at the T20 level for the Gujarat Titans and for India when he is captaining the T20 side. I do believe that if he wins the first game in Mumbai, then you can almost stamp him as the India captain once the World Cup is over in 2023,' added Gavaskar.

Notably, Rohit had taken over the white-ball captaincy from Virat Kohli in December 2021 and took over as the red-ball captain in 2022 after Kohli quit following a seven-year long stint.

I think he encourages them, which is a wonderful sign," said Gavaskar. Ex-India opener Sunil Gavaskar picks THIS star player to replace Rohit as ODI captain after 2023 World Cup

India and Australia are set to face each in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June in England after both teams secured a spot for the marquee clash during the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar series. India were without Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant but managed to win the series 2-1.

With both Bumrah and Pant sidelined for the WTC final too due to injuries, former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar wants India to consider KL Rahul as wicket-keeper over Pant's replacement KS Bharat. Notably, Rahul was dropped in the last two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar series following a string of low scores.

Speaking to media outlet Sports Tak, Gavaskar said, "You can see KL Rahul as a wicketkeeper. If he bats at No. 5 or 6 at the Oval (in the WTC final) then our batting will be stronger. Because he batted really well in England last year. He scored a century at the Lord's. Keep KL Rahul in mind when you pick your XI for the WTC final."

Gavaskar suggested the change after Dinesh Karthik highlighted issues in KS Bharat's technique on air during the Ahmedabad Test between India and Australia.

"Dinesh Karthik summed up the problems with his wicketkeeping quite beautifully. The real test of a wicketkeeper is on pitches like these where the ball is turning. If you look at Travis Head's dismissal, when the ball turned and hit his stumps, KS Bharat's gloves were nowhere near the ball. That means, if the ball hadn't hit the stumps, it would have resulted in 4 byes. This is definitely a cause for concern. Whether they will select him in the XI or not is up to the selection committee but in England, you won't get pitches where the keeper has to stand up to the stumps. In that case, you can pick KL Rahul as a wicketkeeper and even Ishan Kishan can be considered. Their batting is better than Bharat's," Gavaskar said.

Rahul was also removed as the vice-captain of the side and Shubman Gill was roped in for the last two Tests as a batter. Gill made an immediate impact at the top and scored a century in India's first innings in the last Test.

India vs Australia, 4th Test: Sunil Gavaskar DANCES on Oscar winning 'Naatu Naatu' song - WATCH

India's pace spearhead Mohammed Shami returned to the playing XI for the fourth and final Test against Australia in Ahmedabad and looked out of touch in his first spell. Conceding ten runs in the first over itself that included a four-bye, Shami’s line and length was all but wayward.

Even in the following overs, Shami didn't appear to be in rhythm as Sunil Gavaskar, sitting in the commentary box, slammed the management for resting him for the Indore Test as the reason for the break in his flow here at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Gavaskar said there was no need to rest him as there ample time between both Tests for a bowler to get the required break.

"Resting Mohammed Shami was not a smart move. You had 8 days break between the 2nd and the 3rd Test. He bowled military medium in his first two deliveries," Gavaskar said on air for Star Sports during the 4th Test.

Speaking further on Shami’s off-track line and length early on, the former India legend said instead of troubling the batter with the new ball, he made them comfortable by not being on point. Unlike how it happened in the previous three Tests, the pacers failed to break the opening stand this time as it was Ravi Ashwin who got out Travis Head.

"That's how it's got to be. The batter is nervous; he is not yet off the mark. If he sees the ball go harmlessly to the keeper, he gets an opportunity to see what the pitch is doing. He can then mentally start to relax just that little bit," Gavaskar added. "Great bowlers were at you straightaway, from the first ball.

"He is just not getting his line right. Look at how far that went. It's going to be called byes because it hasn't gone away from the marker, which indicates wide. I think you know that Mohammed Shami is the kind of bowler who likes to be in rhythm, may be you shouldn't rest him. I think it's important to get your bowling muscles going, in the gym, you don't get your bowling muscles going," Gavaskar added.

However, Shami returned with a big wicket of Marnus Labuschagne on just three. Before lunch one day one, Australia were two wickets down but looked in a space on a track that surprised Rohit Sharma during the toss.

IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma aims to emulate Sunil Gavaskar’s elite feat in Test series finale at Ahmedabad

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the Indore pitch for failing to provide a fair contest between bat and ball. After the ICC on Friday rated the surface used for the third Test between India and Australia as poor for the similar reasons mentioned above, Gavaskar tore into the thought process behind asking for such pitches for a Test match.

Following an embarrassing defeat on day three of the third Test, Indian captain Rohit Sharma defended the pitch that was turning square in the first session of day one saying they only asked the curators to make sure turners, and that India should have applied themselves better on those tracks instead of complaining about it.

On the flip side of this whole discussion on the pitches that are used so far in this marquee series, Gavaskar said like how it happened in the past during the famous England series in 2012, India could fall prey to its own trap if they continue to go ahead with a similar kind of pitch in the fourth Test in Ahmedabad.

"I think there has to be a little more thought on that. This pitch has backfired in 2012-13 when Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar spun England to a win. I don’t think it’s a great idea to have pitches of this quality," Gavaskar told India Today after the end of the third Test in Indore.

Gavaskar, who was the first Indian batter to complete 10,000 Tests runs having faced some of the greatest bowlers the game has seen, suggested that the ideal surface for a Test match must be good for batting and bowling on the first two days, and then from day three onwards it should be assisting the spinners – not like how it was here in Indore where it was turning square from the ball one.

Further expressing his concerns on what kind of pitch will be on offer in the final Test that begins on March 9th, Gavaskar said,

"You want to have pitches where there is a good balance between bat and ball. You want to have a pitch where for the first couple of days, the new-ball bowlers can get some help and the batters can play through the line and score runs. And then from Day 3 and 4, the ball is going to turn a little bit. I don’t know what’s going to happen in Ahmedabad. If the pitch in Ahmedabad is a raging turner, then India might go on to win but once again the pitch might get demerit points," Sunil Gavaskar added.

The series currently stands at 2-1 in favour of India.

IND vs AUS: Indore pitch receives further criticism from Sunil Gavaskar following ICC hammering

England’s most in-form batter at the moment Harry Brook has found himself chasing records set by two of the greatest batters ever – Sunil Gavaskar and Sir Donald George Bradman. Following his fourth century in his fifth Test innings, young Brook is line to become the player with most runs after first six Test matches.

While Indian legend Gavaskar leads the chart with 912 runs, Bradman is second on the list with 862 runs – whereas, the right-handed Harry, who after stumps on day one has 807 runs to his name, could well break their records over the course of the ongoing Test. Besides, he also became the first batter ever to score these many runs in just first nine Test innings.

Racing against time to add yet another hundred to his name in Tests, former captain Joe Root found his mojo back, while Brook began from where he had left. Piling up runs at will, Harry Brook and Joe Root kept the run-rate intact and went after literally evert bowler. Brimming with confidence after first Test’s success, both didn’t give much chances to the hosts to make a comeback on day one.

In a magnificent 294-run stand for the fourth wicket so far, Brook scored 184* off 169 balls, hitting 24 fours and five sixes while Root ended his century drought, remaining unbeaten on 101 off 182 with seven boundaries.

"We've got them (New Zealand) on the back foot now; hopefully we can carry that on in the next few days," the 24-year-old Harry Brook said after stumps on day one.

Even in the first Test at Mount Maunganui, Brook scored fifties in both innings, hitting 89 in the first and 54 in the second.

India and Pakistan have one of the most fierce rivalries in cricketing fraternity. Over the years, the two teams meet only in multi-nation or ICC events due to strained political relations between both nations. While the current crop of players from both sides remain co-ordial with each other on and off the field, there has been a constant flurry of former Pakistan cricketers taking a dig at Indian players for their performances.

Recently, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has now opened up on the entire matter and has lashed out at this habit of ex-Pakistan players for their constant criticism of Indian cricketers.

'What these guys know is that they will immediately get a response...'

Gavaskar wrote in his coloum for Mid-Day, "What the following for the game also does is to make the media, especially the online media, look to get more eyeballs or followers and so anything to do with cricket and especially about Indian players gets into the public domain even if it actually belittles them. That's the sad part especially when the views of those across the border get online in the Indian media. It's almost a daily thing to hear some former player from across the border pulling down an Indian player and saying the Pakistani player is better. What these guys know is that they will immediately get a response from the Indian fans who will defend their favourite player and in doing so, increasing the followers of the former player from across the border."

The former Indian opener added, "It's a trick that is used by them knowing that to increase their followers all that they have to do is say uncomplimentary stuff about Indian players, past or present. Have you ever heard or read any Indian player past or present saying anything about the players from across the border? Frankly, nobody cares, so no Indian that I know has said anything about the players from across the border. It's simply not our style. If our online media ignores what is said across the border then it will automatically stop, but our media will publish it even if it is pulling a fellow Indian down."

At present, the senior Indian men's team is involved in a four-match Test series versus Australia at home. On the other hand, the Pakistani players are playing PSL 2023. The last time the senior men's teams locked horns was in 2022 T20 World Cup at the MCG, Melbourne where Rohit Sharma & Co. defeated Babar Azam-led Men in Green by five wickets.

Gavaskar said, "Cheteshwar, when we are playing as kids growing up, whether we are playing at home or down on the streets or in the maidans, we are all dreaming of playing for India and eventually when we do play for India, it's an unbelievable feeling. You want to do that over and over again and to do that you need a lot of hardwork, you need plenty of determination, plenty of self-belief to be able to lift yourself from lean periods and then still focus on getting the job done. When you go out to bat, it looks as if you're not just taking your bat with you, you are taking the Indian flag with you and you put your body on the line for India. You have taken the blows, you have got up and you have made the bowlers earn your wicket."

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the All-India Senior Selection Committee for snubbing Sarfaraz Khan from the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy. Gavaskar took a dig at the committee saying only 'slim and trim' guys were selected for the squad.

"He [Sarfaraz] is not staying off the field when he is scoring hundreds, he is back on the field again. All that tells you that the man is fit for cricket. If you are looking for only slim and trim guys, then you might as well go to a fashion show and pick some models and then give them a bat and ball in their hand and then include them," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today. "You have cricketers in all shapes and sizes. Don't go by the size, but go by the runs and the wickets." The legendary opener added that the 'Yo-Yo test' should not be the only criterion to select an individual for a cricket team. "At the end of the day, if you are unfit, you are not going to score hundreds. So cricket fitness is most important. I don't have a problem with you wanting to do the Yo-Yo test or whatever it is, but the Yo-Yo test cannot be the only criterion." "You got to make sure that the man is fit for cricket as well. And if the person, whoever it is, is fit for cricket, then I don't think it should really matter." Notably, the selection committee announced a 17-member squad for the first two Tests against Australia last week. While Khan was snubbed, his state mate Suryakumar Yadav was picked, solely based on his T20I form. Read more: India announce squad for Border-Gavaskar trophy; SKY makes the cut Most ex-cricketers have been miffed with the omission of Khan because it sends a message that performance in Ranji cricket is not rewarded. And the arguments have merit. Khan has scored a mountain of runs in the red-ball format. Since 2019, playing for Mumbai, he has scored 2,289 runs in 22 innings with a staggering average of 134.64 with nine hundreds, five fifties, two double hundreds, and a triple century. After not being included in the Test squad, Khan in an interview said he could not sleep and questioned why he wasn't in the squad. "But now after speaking to my father, I’m back to normal. I will never give up practice, I will not go under depression. Don’t worry, I will keep trying.” Read more: 'I wasn’t able to sleep': Sarfaraz Khan on missing the India call-up for the Australia series Khan's career average of 80.47 is only second to the great Donald Bradman who retired with an average of 99.9. 'Go to fashion show...': Sunil Gavaskar slams selection committee for ignoring Sarfaraz Khan

Following a review meeting in Mumbai last week that was attended by some big names in the Indian cricket, it was decided that the infamous Yo-Yo and Dexa test will used as the main criteria for selection in the team. Upset over this decision by the BCCI, the ex-World Cup winner and legend Sunil Gavaskar slammed the idea saying cricket fitness should be the prime consideration for selection and not any of these fitness tests. On Monday, in a column written by him in the Mid-Day, Gavaskar wrote it’s a team’s loss if a player who is scoring tons of runs or picking wickets couldn’t clear the above-mentioned tests as he won’t be selected then.

"The BCCI announced recently that they are bringing back the 'yo-yo' test and some other tests for the fitness levels mainly for the emerging players. A player could be reeling off centuries and double centuries or picking five and ten wicket hauls while bowling heaps of overs, but if he can't pass these tests, then he won't be eligible for selection."

"Cricket fitness should be the prime consideration. And yes, it would be revealing if these fitness tests are done in the public domain with the media present for then we would know if a player is 'yo-yo' or no-no," wrote Gavaskar.

Gavaskar opener further questioned the selection of the new men’s selection committee that was formed recently after the CAC interviewed several candidates for the vacant posts. While all five posts are held by the former cricketers, Gavaskar asked why there aren’t any bio-mechanists or body since experts as selectors given the criteria for selection is now based on fitness levels and not current form.

He added as it will eventually fall down to making a choice between two players for a spot in the team, these experts will be in a better position to pick considering their fitness levels.

"The CAC has just interviewed candidates for the selection committee panel, but not one was a bio-mechanics expert or a body science person. Since eligibility is going to be based on the fitness of a player, it might be better to have these experts in the selection panel than former cricketers."

"After all if it comes to a choice between two players for a spot in the team these experts would be in a better position to tell which among the two is fitter than the other and never mind the runs scored or wickets taken by the two players," the former legend wrote in his column for the Mid-Day.

Indian legend slams mandatory Yo-Yo test as criteria for selection, says cricket fitness should be considered

After missing the series opener due to illness, Arshdeep Singh was named in India's XI for the second and penultimate T20I versus Sri Lanka, in Pune, on Thursday (January 05). The 23-year-old left-armer had a forgettable outing, returning with 2-0-37-0 including five no-balls (three on the trot). Thus, Arshdeep has now bowled the joint most no-balls by any bowler in the format from a Full Member team and most by an Indian.

Indian bowlers, in general, were expensive and off the mark as they conceded 12 extras (four wides and seven no-balls) as Sri Lanka rode on Kusal Mendis' 52 and Dasun Shanaka's 22-ball 56 to post 206 for 7 after being asked to bat first. In reply, India were 57 for 5 before Suryakumar Yadav's 51, Axar Patel's 31-ball 65* and Shivam Mavi's 15-ball 26 brought the hosts back before they fell short by 16 runs. After the game, lots of fingers have been pointed at Arshdeep. Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has now schooled the young pacer and said 'not bowling a no-ball is definitely in the bowler's control'.

"As a professional, you can't be doing this. We often hear today's players say, things aren't in our control. Not bowling no ball is in your control. What happens after you deliver the ball, what the batsman does, is another thing. Not bowling a no ball is definitely in your control," Gavaskar said during his commentary stint on Star Sports.

Meanwhile, head coach Rahul Dravid called for patience and defended Arshdeep despite his horror showing. Dravid told in the post-match conference, "Nobody wants to bowl wides (no-balls) in any format. Especially in T20s, they can hurt you. We need to be patient with lot of these young kids. There are a lot of youngsters playing in this team, especially our bowling attack. They are young kids; they will have games like these at times. We all need to be patient with them and understanding. Of course, they are working hard, and we keep trying to help them, support them technically, and also just create the right environment for them to be able to get the best out of their skills."

Dravid has also hinted that India won't chop and change a lot for the final T20I, on Saturday (January 07) in Rajkot, with the series on the line.

After missing the series opener due to illness, Arshdeep Singh was named in India's XI for the second and penultimate T20I versus Sri Lanka, in Pune, on Thursday (January 05).

Also read: 'We all need to be...' - Rahul Dravid backs Arshdeep Singh after pacer's horror show in India-SL 2nd T20I Meanwhile, head coach Rahul Dravid called for patience and defended Arshdeep despite his horror showing. Of course, they are working hard, and we keep trying to help them, support them technically, and also just create the right environment for them to be able to get the best out of their skills." India lost the three-match ODI series opener versus hosts Bangladesh, in Dhaka, by one wicket after being bundled out for 186. As Shakib Al Hasan rattled the famed Indian batting line-up, on a tough track, with a fine 5 for 36, India bowlers produced a top show but couldn't get rid of the last-wicket stand between Player-of-the-Match Mehedi Hasan (38 not out) and Mustafizur Rahman as the duo took their side home with four overs to spare.

From India's perspective, KL Rahul top-scored with a fine 70-ball 73 whereas in-form batter Shreyas Iyer struck 24 (39) along with Rohit Sharma and Washington Sundar also getting starts. Before the second and penultimate ODI, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has a word of advise for Rahul and Iyer, who have been very good in ODI cricket of late. Gavaskar feels both have done well but cannot afford to relax with all-rounder Hardik Pandya's return in the format inevitable.

Speaking to Sony Sports, Gavaskar said, "When you have someone breathing down your neck, like KL Rahul will feel Shreyas Iyer is breathing down his neck which is again good for Rahul because he would want to go out there not taking any match lightly. He would want to score in every game. And both of them are outstanding fielders and KL Rahul can keep wickets which is a huge plus. Iyer can also bowl. So it is good to have these kind of competitions for No. 5 and 6 not to forget that there is a certain Hardik Pandya who is also likely to comeback in the one-day side sooner than later."

With the ODI World Cup due to be held in India in less than a year, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team is tinkering with their team combination in a bid to finalise their XI. Rahul, the vice-captain and part-time keeper, Iyer and Hardik will certainly be one of the key players for the two-time winners whereas Rishabh Pant also cannot be ruled out, who slammed his maiden ODI ton in India's famous series win over hosts England in July 2022.

Thus, India are spoiled for choices and need to smartly finalise their playing XI for the mega event next year.

BAN vs IND 2022: Gavaskar warns Rahul, Iyer to not get complacent with Hardik's likely return in ODIs

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar believes that rain helped India avoid the blues against New Zealand in the recently concluded ODI series.

Gavaskar, in his column in Time of India said Indian batters were once again found out on the bouncy New Zealand pitches and if it weren't for the rain, the series could have ended in a 3-0 rout.

"The weather gods saved India from what could have been a total rout in the three-match ODI series in New Zealand," wrote Gavaskar.

"What the series showed is that when it comes to pitches where there is movement or extra bounce, the Indian batters continue to be challenged, just like earlier generations," he added.

The former Indian captain added that Indian batters had to bat with a positive and aggressive intent which they failed to do so.

"In Test-match cricket there are opportunities to show gumption and technique and come through it with some bruises and runs to show for the effort. But in One-day cricket, where there is the need to make every ball count for something, the opportunity to wait for the scoreable delivery is much less."

India toured New Zealand shortly after the disappointment at the T20 World Cup where the team crashed out of the semifinal. India won the T20I series 1-0 but could never really manage to compete in the 50-over format.

In the same column, Gavaskar also shot a warning message for the Indian team to not take Bangladesh lightly, especially in their backyard.

"Now for the tour of Bangladesh all the big guns in batting are back as also in the bowling and India will be a formidable team once again. That said the Bangladeshis are an extremely tough team to beat in their home environs and India will have to be at their best to win."

India are scheduled to play three ODIs and two Tests in Bangladesh. The first ODI is currently ongoing at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka.

'Weather gods saved India', says Sunil Gavaskar after India's ODI series loss in New Zealand

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar believes some of the players from India's current T20I setup might soon take a call on their future after the team's exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. India crashed out of the tournament on Thursday after a shattering ten-wicket defeat against England in the second semi-final at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide.

England openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales batted India out of the contest as they slammed half-centuries apiece to help their team cruise to the 169-run target with four overs to spare. It was a woeful performance from the Indian bowlers, who were taken to the cleaners by the destructive duo, failing to pick up even a single wicket.

Speaking after India's shambolic defeat, former captain Gavaskar said he expects certain changes in the T20I squad going forward and backed Hardik Pandya to take over as the new captain in the shortest format. The India legend also feels some of the players in their mid-30s will now be considering their future in the format.

"Having won the Indian Premier League on his first assignment as the captain, they would have marked Hardik Pandya out as the next captain. Hardik Pandya will definitely take over the team in the future and there will be some retirements, you never know. Players will be giving it a lot of thought. There are several players in their mid-30s who will be reconsidering their position in the Indian T20I team," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

India head coach Rahul Dravid was questioned about the futures of the likes of captain Rohit Sharma (35), Virat Kohli (34), R Ashwin (36) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (32) during the post-match press conference following India's exit from the T20 World Cup. Responding to the reporter, Dravid said it was not the right time to talk about the future of the senior players.

Hardik, who has been touted by many to lead India in T20Is going forward, will captain the team in the T20I series on their tour of New Zealand starting later this month as the likes of Kohli, Rohit, and KL Rahul are all rested. There will be some retirements: Sunil Gavaskar after India's exit from T20 World Cup 2022

KL Rahul will be under the spotlight when India lock horns with Bangladesh in their fourth Super 12 clash in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Wednesday. Rahul has not enjoyed the best of campaigns in the tournament so far and has struggled to score runs consistently.

The stylish right-hander has so far managed only 22 runs in India's first three matches and has looked far from his best. However, he will be hoping to spark a turnaround when India take on Bangladesh in the all-important game on Wednesday. A win will all but confirm India's spot in the semi-finals.

Sharing his two cents on Rahul's current lean patch, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar said the opening batter doesn't seem to believe in himself at present. The former India captain advised Rahul to play freely and go with the intent of bashing the bowlers which will help him gain some confidence.

"Every time I see Rahul not scoring runs, I get the impression, he does not actually know the kind of ability he has. He doesn't seem to believe in himself. He is a fabulous player and has loads of ability. He's got to start saying 'I'm gonna go and knock the stuffing out of the ball'. He's got to have that kind of attitude. I want him to swagger. It will make a whole difference," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

Senior India batter Virat Kohli spent some time with Rahul in the nets during India's practice session ahead of the Bangladesh clash on Tuesday and was seen sharing valuable advice with the opening batter. Kohli has been in terrific form in the T20 World Cup so far and has been scoring runs consistently.

Gavaskar believes it was a great gesture from Kohli to help Rahul out during his lean patch as there is no one better to guide him in the Indian team.

"He's (Kohli) the senior player, has bags of runs in every format, this has been his favourite ground, and he'll be able to tell him what to do. I think he was trying to say that the ball outside off stump could cause trouble to anybody early in the innings when you are not certain about your off stump," said Gavaskar.

"You are not certain where the ball is gonna move. You tend to play at deliveries which you would otherwise leave and in this format, you can't afford to leave deliveries. He's got out a couple of times dragging the ball onto his stumps, at Perth, the extra bounce did him but he's a class act, let's not forget that," he added.

KL Rahul doesn't seem to believe in himself: Sunil Gavaskar on Indan batter's struggles in T20 World Cup 2022

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar believes not playing smart cricket cost India their Super 12 clash against South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 30). India lost a low-scoring thriller against the Proteas by five wickets in Perth after failing to defend a total of 133 runs.

While India's batting line-up crumbled on a tricky wicket in Perth, their fielding also failed to impress with several missed opportunities during South Africa's run-chase. Virat Kohli dropped a sitter to hand Aiden Markram a reprieve before captain Rohit Sharma missed an easy run-out chance.

Despite getting off to a brilliant start with the ball, India failed to capitalise as Markram and David Miller slammed half-centuries apiece to take South Africa home. Gavaskar insisted fielding was not the major reason behind India's loss as he pointed out at the lack of smart cricket by the Men in Blue.

"I think, in cricket, you are going to have situations where catches are going to be dropped, run-out opportunities missed. What you really going to see is that we didn't score enough runs. On a pitch like this where there is going to be a little bit of a challenge for battes, I think you have got to play it smartly. I don't think we played smart enough cricket because if you had played smart cricket, we would have had a 150 on the board," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

Gavaskar highlighted how the likes of Deepak Hooda and Dinesh Karthik could have played smartly and tried to settle down in the middle instead of trying to play a big shot early on. While Hooda was dismissed on a duck off just three balls, Karthik got dismissed on 6 off 15 balls trying to take on the bowler.

Their dismissal put extra pressure on Suryakumar Yadav, who was the lone saviour for India after Lungi Ngidi ran through the team's top order. Ngidi picked up a four-wicket haul to ensure the likes of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli among others were all sent back cheaply. Suryakumar played a fantastic knock of 68 runs to help India post a fighting total of 133 runs on the board.

"I have been stressing about playing an extra batter but Deepak Hooda tried to attack in his 3rd delivery when he had Suryakumar Yadav at the other end. He had to play smart cricket," said Gavaskar.

"Similarly, I think, Karthik getting out at that stage. I am not blaming them, I am saying generally saying that apart from Suryakumar Yadav, nobody played the kind of cricket with the experience that they had that would have helped us get those 15-20 runs more," he added.

However, the former India captain insisted there is no need for India to press the panic button yet in the T20 World Cup as they are comfortably placed to qualify for the semi-finals with 4 points after three matches. India have to play Bangladesh and Zimbabwe next and will hope to win both games to ensure they can have a smooth qualification.

"Yes, let's not press the panic button at all. We have 4 points and 2 matches to go. 2 matches against opponents we should be able to win. You should never taken any team lightly, Bangladesh have given us a run for the money in T20Is. So we have to be careful against them, even Zimbabwe, the way they have played in this World Cup, we have to be careful," said Gavaskar.

'Let's not press the panic button': Sunil Gavaskar after India's loss against South Africa in T20 World Cup

Team India pulled off a heist versus Pakistan in an epic Super 12 clash at the T20 World Cup on Sunday (October 23) at the iconic and jam-packed MCG, Melbourne. In pursuit of 160, India were on the back foot and reeling at 31 for 4 before Virat Kohli-Hardik Pandya stitched an impressive 113-run fifth-wicket stand which revived the run-chase and took their side past the finish line, by four wickets, on the last ball of the contest.

Opting to bowl first, Rohit Sharma-led India restricted Pakistan to 159-8, who rode on fifties from Iftikhar Ahmed and Shan Masood. Arshdeep Singh and Hardik returned with a three-fer each but the run-chase started on a dismal note for the Men in Blue. Kohli-Hardik joined in, and rotated the strike before both accelerated and set the stage for a thrilling finish.

With 48 needed off 18, India brought down the equation to 16 off six balls. The last over, bowled by Md Nawaz, comprised two wides, free-hit, six off a waist-high delivery, no-ball, and two wickets falling before R Ashwin smacked a four on the last ball to take India home. Thus, emotions were running away in the middle and even at the stands -- filled with supporters from both sides.

Among them, former cricketers-turned-commentators Sunil Gavaskar, Kris Srikkanth, Irfan Pathan, etc. also celebrated India's winning shot with the Little Master jumping in joy. The video of his reaction has gone viral:

At the post-match presentation, Player-of-the-Match Kohli (82 not out off 53 balls) was at a loss of words and stated, "It's a surreal atmosphere, I have no words, no idea how that happened. I am really lost for words. Hardik believed we can do it, if we stayed till the end. When Shaheen bowled from the pavilion end, that's when we decided to take him down. Haris is their prime bowler, and I hit those two sixes. The calculation was simple. Nawaz had one over to bowl, so if I could take Haris down, they would panic. From 28 in 8, it came down to 16 to 6. I tried to stick to my instincts. The first one was back of a hand slower ball (the one over long-on). Standing here I just feel like it was meant to be. Till today Mohali was my best innings against Australia. Today I will count this one higher."

Watch: UNMISSABLE! Sunil Gavaskar jumps in joy as India beat Pakistan at the MCG in a thrilling T20 WC tie

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes skipper Rohit Sharma's form is the only concern for the Indian team in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. India registered a thrilling four-wicket win against arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening game of the tournament on Sunday to get off to a flying start.

The Men in Blue rode on a stellar knock from Virat Kohli and all-round heroics from Hardik Pandya to clinch the last-ball thriller against Pakistan. However, their batting woes were left exposed once again as the top-order failed to deliver in yet another high-pressure game.

Both Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul got dismissed on 4 runs each highlighting India's concerns at the top. Gavaskar believes Rohit being out of touch now remains India's only concern going forward in the tournament as the Hitman has not managed to score runs at the consistency he is known for.

"The only concern really has been that Rohit Sharma of late has not quite scored with the same capability we know him to. I think if he gets going it really makes people’s life really easy for people to follow," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

Rohit and Rahul once again fail to give India the start they needed in the tricky 160-run chase as a result of which the team found itself under massive pressure with 31/4 at one stage before Kohli and Pandya's rescue act. Gavaskar urged Rohit and Rahul to aim at giving a good platform at the top which can make life easy for the middle-order batters.

"A good platform is what everyone looks at. You give a good platform, a good start and it makes that much easier for somebody coming down at four or five to start hitting the ball from the first ball," said Gavaskar.

"They don’t have to give themselves time to settle in, they don't have to give themselves time to steady the ship, like India had to do against Pakistan when they were four wickets down for 31. So, even if you get a slightly slower start, maybe get to about 40 after losing 1 wicket, that is a much better platform than 31/4," he added.

India will lock horns with Netherlands in their second Super 12 encounter on Thursday (October 27).
