Indian cricket legend and renowned commentator Sunil Gavaskar tore into Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s star all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell, for being a flop show this season. The three-time World Cup winner with Australia, Maxwell, has scored just 32 runs from six contested games in IPL 2024, with his best being 28. Maxwell has struggled against pace bowling this season, and Gavaskar pointed out the same ahead of RCB’s home game against SunRisers Hyderabad on Monday (April 15).

With just one win and five losses in six matches, RCB is struggling on the points table (on the 10th position). Since each of the remaining matches are like do-or-die ones, RCB must make amends to their XI before it gets late this season.

Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said bouncing balls or the ones coming onto his chest area height will trouble Maxwell, and by now, each team has made a note of it, further causing trouble for the underfire batter and the franchise.

“He has been unable to play fast bowling, period. Balls bouncing to his chest or shoulder height are troubling him. He can whack every ball below his waist height but not the ones above that,” Gavaskar said of Maxwell.

Not barring other overseas or highly-paid players, Gavaskar said some of the top names besides Maxwell have also struggled to get going. He, however, noted that on the surfaces where the bounce would be low, Maxwell will be among runs.&nbsp;

“And it’s not just Maxwell. Several big-ticket players are finding it difficult to read bowling. So, when he gets out in the match, the balls that remain low, he will score against them,” he added.

<h2>RCB must win against SRH</h2>

Taking on one of the top teams this season – the SunRisers Hyderabad, at home, the RCB must find a way to beat them and return to winning ways.

Though their run of form in Bengaluru this time has been poor, the hosts will hope for a better outing from the star-studded squad to bag two points.&nbsp;

Considering Maxwell’s poor run, RCB might bring in Cameron Green for him, a risk worth taking for.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, with Virat in top-notch form, RCB has managed to put up runs on the board, though the missing x-factor in the bowling attack couldn’t help the cause.&nbsp;

IPL 2024: 'He's unable to play fast bowling' - Sunil Gavaskar tears into RCB legend for poor showing

Riyan Parag's 48-ball 76 went in vain as Rajasthan Royals (RR) lost their first game of IPL 2024 when they hosted Gujarat Titans (GT) in match 24 on Wednesday (April 10) at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur. With RR making 196-3, along with skipper Sanju Samson also being unbeaten on 68&nbsp;(38), Shubman Gill-led Gujarat chased down the score on the final ball with Rashid Khan's 11-ball 24* providing the finishing touch after their captain's sublime 72.

Nonetheless, Parag continued his good form in the ongoing edition. He has already registered three fifty-plus scores in IPL 2024 and is second on the Orange Cap list, after Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) Virat Kohli -- who tops the list with 316 runs. Thus, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar lavished huge praise on Parag and urged him to continue his purple patch as an India call-up might not be far away. The youngster, from Assam, is coming into this year's IPL on the back of a brilliant run in domestic cricket.

Gavaskar told Star Sports after RR lost to GT, "Riyan Parag made Gujarat pay for those lapses. That's what cricket is all about. You get an opportunity and you make the most of it. And he has made the most of it. He is playing some unbelievable cricket."

He added, "Not just in the IPL, but right through the season, he has had enormous success. He is someone that the selection committee has got an eye on. And so all he needs to do is keep on batting the way he has been. His fielding, we all know about it, he is an excellent fielder. And he can bowl a few of those dribbly-dobblies, I call them mixed pakodas."

Parag has 261 runs from five games in IPL 2024. He has been RR's crisis man this season, showing a lot of maturity while batting in different situations. It is to be noted that since&nbsp;his IPL debut in 2019, the Assam star made only 2 fifties across 5 seasons. However, the 2024 IPL season is proving to be a career-defying one for the Assamese youngster and he will be eager to continue in a similar stead in the upcoming games.

IPL 2024: BCCI selectors keeping an eye on 'unbelievable' Riyan Parag, feels former Indian opener Gavaskar

Former India captain and batting great Sunil Gavaskar has urged the BCCI to implement the 'incentive scheme' in the Ranji Trophy as well, saying it will motivate more players at the domestic level and will also look after the feeder (to the Test team) system.&nbsp;

Earlier, the BCCI announced an incentive scheme for all those who will appear in 75% of Tests in a season by paying them an extra INR 45 lakhs per game (outside of their designated match fee), while those playing from 50-75% matches will pocked INR 30 lakhs.&nbsp;

"That is a wonderful thing by the BCCI to reward those who would be playing [Test cricket]. But I would also request the BCCI to ensure that the feeder to the Test team, which is the Ranji Trophy, is also looked after," Gavaskar said on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Friday.

Given the pay breakdown in India's domestic tournaments, a player earns INR 2 lakhs for a Ranji game. If he plays each match, and his team qualifies for the finals, it adds up to 10 games, meaning a player can earn a maximum of INR 20 lakhs (equivalent to the lowest base price for a player in the IPL). Besides, the match fee in the Vijay Hazare Trophy is INR 50,000, dropping to INR 17,500 in Syed Mushtaq Ali.

"[If your team doesn't qualify for the knockouts], your whole year's earnings are around 20 lakh, which is like the base price in the IPL. If there are proper contracts, then players will feel more motivated to play red-ball cricket," an unnamed domestic player said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.&nbsp;

Speaking on the same lines, Gavaskar said the BCCI must consider increasing the player fees by two or three folds to ensure financial security for all, motivating them to prefer the Ranji Trophy over franchise-based T20 cricket.&nbsp;

"If the Ranji Trophy fee can be doubled or tripled, certainly there will be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy, [and a] lot less pullouts. They will all be wanting to play with the slab system - [if] every ten first-class matches you get that much more - so I would request the BCCI to look at that aspect as well."

<h2>Better scheduling will help the motive</h2>

Gavaskar touched upon a different aspect of how better scheduling can help BCCI achieve their motive.&nbsp;

The former top-order batter asked BCCI to look into the growing concern of the short gap between Ranji games and even suggested Ranji to be the first of three tournaments to be played and not the last to ensure everyone is available and no one opts to skip it.

As things stand, the Ranji Trophy is the last competition in the domestic calendar.&nbsp;

"That way, everybody will be available to play [the Ranji Trophy], except for the ones featuring for India. There will be no real excuse to pull out. With the one-dayers beginning from January, people who are in the IPL can have enough practice from them," Gavaskar said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Mumbai recently won their record 42nd Ranji Trophy title, beating Vidarbha in the final in Wankhede.&nbsp;

Sunil Gavaskar urges BCCI to implement ‘incentive scheme’ in Ranji Trophy to motivate players

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar is certainly on cloud nine after India's emphatic 4-1 series win over England at home. The five-match Test series saw Rohit Sharma-led India concede a 1-0 lead before turning it around in style, and winning the five-Test series 4-1. What makes the victory more sweeter is that India were without many key players but the young guns, such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel, Akash Deep and Devdutt Padikkal, stood tall at various junctures to take India to a memorable series triumph at home. Thus, Gavaskar lauded the Indian squad and even slammed England for their attitude, believing them to be above all.&nbsp;

<h2>England arrived in India with the usual 'we are doing you a favour' attitude: Gavaskar</h2>

In his column for The Sportstar, the former captain Gavaskar wrote, "What a walloping, what great fun to watch a young India team demolish an England team that had arrived in India with the usual 'we are doing you a favour' attitude that brings a smirk on the faces of those Indian officials who go to receive them at various airports."

Gavaskar went on to claim that some of the England players simply cannot digest the fact that their Indian counterparts earn a whopping amount in the IPL; resulting in more on-field sledging and banter. He stated that the Australian cricketers have been 'invariably better' (as they also earn more than the English players) and do not carry the same attitude unlike their arch-rivals.

In this regard, he opined, "The Aussies have been invariably better, looking to adapt themselves to the culture and not look down their noses at us natives. It also helps that the Aussies recognise a golden goose when they see one, and the IPL is certainly a humongous golden goose. Not only do Aussie players, some so memorably described by Kevin Pietersen as second or third-grade cricketers, go for astronomical amounts, but there are also Aussie coaches, physios, trainers, and anybody who is their golf and beer buddy in the IPL coaching staff, making more money than they do at home."

Gavaskar further&nbsp;claimed, "That is also the reason why the England and Indian players get into verbal skirmishes so often when they are playing against each other. Not a lot of England players are picked in the IPL, mainly because they can be withdrawn by their Board anytime for a preparation camp or something, which leaves the franchises in a lurch."

"Some of them can't stomach the fees for which some of the Indian players are bought and compare their achievements at the international level when the IPL auction dynamics can be so volatile and hard to explain or even understand. So you see more lip in the India-England encounters than in any other India match. That's why the pleasure of beating England is always greater," he added.

At present, the likes of Jason Roy and Harry Brook have withdrawn from the upcoming IPL 2024 edition citing personal reasons. Over the years, many England cricketers have pulled out at the last minute, leaving their respective franchises in a spot of bother.&nbsp;

IND vs ENG: Rohit Sharma equals Sunil Gavaskar’s elite feat with impressive ton on Day 2 of Dharamsala Test

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar opined on Rishabh Pant's much-awaited comeback during the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 edition, which kicks off on March 22. Pant will return to competitive cricket after his horrific car crash in December 2022. Gavaskar feels&nbsp;Pant should only be reinstated as the&nbsp;Delhi Capitals (DC) captain&nbsp;if he is fully fit.

<h2>'Let's not rush him into doing something that there will be a setback'</h2>

Talking to Star Sports, Gavaskar said, "He certainly has the ability to think on his feet. If he gets back to full fitness, the reins of (Delhi Capitals) captaincy should be handed over to him. Let's stay hopeful. This season is the first of him coming back to full fitness. Let's not rush him into doing something that there will be a setback. Knee plays a pivotal role in batting as well as keeping -- which, of course, he may not do initially. Maybe he won't be the usual Rishabh Pant that we are used to seeing."

'Let's not...': Sunil Gavaskar opines on Rishabh Pant's awaited comeback during IPL 2024

When playing in Ranchi, one is bound to draw comparisons with the city’s own and country’s greatest captain, MS Dhoni, and keeper-batter Dhruv Jurel was not spared. Former India captain and batting great Sunil Gavaskar lauded the youngster for his gritty knock of 90 in India’s first innings that helped the home team cut down on runs deficit.&nbsp;

While doing commentary, Gavaskar was heaping praises on Dhruv, saying much like how MS Dhoni had the game awareness early on in his career, Dhruv is on the same page, calling him the next MS Dhoni in the making.&nbsp;

“Of course, he has batted well, but his 'keeping, his work behind the stumps has been equally brilliant. Just by looking at his game-awareness, I want to say that he is another MS Dhoni in the making.”&nbsp;

“I know there can never be another MSD; but you know, the presence of mind that he has. MSD also, when he started, it was that; and Jurel has that game-awareness, street-smart cricketer,” Gavaskar said while doing commentary on day three.

Replacing KS Bharat in the playing XI for the third Test in Rajkot, Dhruv came off well with both bat and ball, especially in this ongoing Test. After India got reduced to 177 for seven at one stage, alongside Kuldeep Yadav, Dhruv Jurel bailed the hosts out.

On day three, Jurel played a handy knock by, first, completing his fifty and, secondly, by adding runs with the tail in the end to put India back on the track. His 90-run stay at the crease impressed one and all, with some veteran cricketers praising him on social media, including Virender Sehwag.&nbsp;

Despite trailing behind by 46 runs in the first innings, India have seemingly squashed England’s chances of levelling the series. Post tea on day three, India picked three quick wickets to dent their momentum as ENG's scorecard read 135 for eight at one stage.

The left-arm unorthodox spinner Kuldeep Yadav starred with the ball, picking four wickets, while Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were among the wickets.

IND v ENG - His game awareness is like MS Dhoni: Sunil Gavaskar lauds Dhruv Jurel for gritty 90 in Ranchi

Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar wasn't happy with the delay in the Indian cricket team sporting black armbands in memory of former skipper Dattajirao Gaekwad who passed away recently on February 13. The Rohit Sharma-led side wore black armbands on day 3 (Feb 17) of the ongoing Test against England in Rajkot but Gavaskar thought that the team could have done it earlier.

"Better late than never... they should've done it on Day 1 but better late than never," Gavaskar said while commentating during day 3. "He was captain of the Indian team in a five-match series. He captained four out of the five matches and the other one was captained by Pankaj Roy," he added.

Earlier on Saturday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in a statement, had informed: "Team India will be wearing black arm bands in memory of Dattajirao Gaekwad, former India captain and India's oldest Test cricketer who passed away recently."

Gaekwad had passed away at the age of 95 on Tuesday (Feb 13) in Vadodara. He was India's oldest living Test cricketer who played in 11 Tests between 1952 and 1961 including his captaincy stint in 1959 tour of England. According to the news agency PTI, Gaekwad died due to age-related ailments.

Gaekwad was a right hand batter who scored 350 runs in Tests at an average of 18.41 with a highest score of 52 against West Indies in New Delhi in 1959. He is survived by his son Anshuman Gaekwad, also a former Indian cricketer and coach of the national team.

Despite his limited exploits in international cricket, Gaekwad was a force to reckon with in domestic Ranji Trophy - India's premier first class tournament. He represented Baroda (Vadodara) all through his career from 1947 to 1961 and scored 5,788 runs at an average of 36.40.

Rajkot Test, Day 3: India players wear black armband for THIS reason, Gavaskar says 'could've done it sooner'

Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar thinks that youngster Prithvi Shaw is going to struggle&nbsp;unless he learns to play on back foot. Gavaskar's comments come after Shaw, who has been sidelined from competitive cricket due to injury for six months, recently scored a century in Ranji Trophy (India's premier domestic tournament) for Mumbai.

"Time for him to step up but what has happened is that a lot of teams have found that because of his predominant movement onto the front foot and that high backlift, they go the short way with him. So unless he starts to learn to play off the back foot, he is going to struggle. If the pitches are such where the ball doesn't come up, then it will be fantastic for him," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Before getting injured, Shaw was playing county cricket in England.. He had scored 244 and an unbeaten 125 for Northamptonshire against Durham before getting his knee injured.

Shaw has fallen out of favour for selection in the Indian team after making his debut in 2020. He also had a poor IPL in 2023 but is now gearing up for good show in 2024. Shaw has played five Tests so far and has scored 339 runs with 134 being his highest.

In other formats, Shaw has played six ODIs but has managed 189 runs only. As for T20Is, he has just played one match, scoring a golden duck. In IPL, he has played 71 games and has scored 1,694 at an average of 23 and a strike rate of 146.&nbsp;

His last couple of seasons have been bad for Delhi Capitals in IPL&nbsp;where his has scored just 106 and 283 runs in 2023 and 2022, respectively. With T20 World Cup in June later this year, Shaw's good IPL 2024 could earn him a chance to get a spot in the India squad for sure.&nbsp;

Ex-India opener Sunil Gavaskar shares why Prithvi Shaw will struggle despite recent ton in domestic cricket

In Dec 2023, Mumbai Indians (MI) dropped a bombshell by announcing Hardik Pandya as the skipper, putting an end to Rohit Sharma's glorious run as Mumbai captain from 2013-2023. Hardik moved back to the MI camp on the retention deadline day, leaving a huge void on Gujarat Titans (GT). The move of Pandya replacing Rohit as the MI captain&nbsp;met with mixed responses. Now, former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has reacted to MI's move and said 'Hardik's captaincy is only going to benefit' the franchise.

Talking to Star Sports, Gavaskar opined, "Look they have always thought about the future of the franchise. Rohit Sharma is already 36 years old and also faces immense pressure being the captain of India for all three formats. They have tried to reduce some of that burden and given that responsibility on the young shoulders of Hardik Pandya."

Gavaskar added, "Handing Hardik the captaincy is only going to benefit the Mumbai Indians. They have now given the freedom to Rohit to go and express himself freely at the top of the order. Hardik can then come at No. 3 or No. 5 and help them post totals of 200-plus consistently."

Under Rohit, MI had a dream run from 2013-2023; winning the IPL championship on five occasions. However, Hitman's batting has gone down&nbsp;in the last few seasons. In 2023, he had an ordinary run with 332 runs at 132.80. Since 2019, he has crossed the 400-run mark in a season only once and failed to even touch the 300-run mark in 2022. Hence, with no additional responsibility, Rohit can shine and regain his lost mojo in IPL 2024.

Hardik has led GT to the title in their maiden season in 2022 and the franchise ended second last year. Thus, he has captaincy experience in the IPL and will be confident enough to take over from Rohit in the upcoming season.

Ind vs Eng: 'He showed he is a quick learner' - Gavaskar lauds Yashasvi Jaiswal after his 209 in Vizag Test

Legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar feels talented young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will establish himself in the Test team after the England series at home. Rohit Sharma-led India take on Ben Stokes' England in a five-match Test series at home, with the first Test to get underway on Jan 25 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Jaiswal came into the Test setup after India moved past seniors Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, etc. following the WTC 2023 final loss. The left-hander has so far amassed 316 runs in four Tests,&nbsp;with a fifty and hundred (171), at an average of 45.14. The England series will be his first-ever at home since his debut in the format, in mid-2023. Thus, Gavaskar feels confident that the 22-year-old will make a name for himself in the upcoming red-ball assignments.

Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, "Yashasvi Jaiswal will easily settle in home conditions. He’s also a left-hander. I think he’ll establish himself completely in the Indian Test team after this series."

Further, Gavaskar backed Shreyas Iyer to be among the runs versus England. Iyer so far has&nbsp;707 runs in 12 Test matches,&nbsp;at an average of 39.27. However, the right-hander struggled against South Africa in their recent Test series&nbsp;in the African nation, ending with only&nbsp;41 runs in four innings.

Gavaskar added, "In the World Cup, Shreyas Iyer batted brilliantly in Indian pitches, so I’m hoping he’ll play similarly at No.5 in the Test series. He batted aggressively, was quite watchful at the start and then his stroke-making after reading the pitch was a delight to watch. I hope he’ll replicate that."

The last two Test series between India and England&nbsp;in India have resulted in 4-0 (2016-17) and 3-1 (2020-21) series triumphs for the home side. They&nbsp;have not lost a Test series on home soil since England beat them 2-1 in 2012/13.

Shivam Dube has been in sublime form in India's ongoing three T20Is versus Afghanistan. He&nbsp;scored&nbsp;60* and 63* in the first two T20Is&nbsp;and was the Player-of-the-Match in the series opener. The left-hander is making a strong statement ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, which will be held in the West Indies and USA in June. Former Indian player Rohan Sunil Gavaskar feels it won't be easy to overlook Dube irrespective of Hardik Pandya's fitness. Dube is being looked upon as Hardik's backup, given his injury issues, but Gavaskar's son feels the former might get selected even if Hardik is fit.&nbsp;

<h2>‘What he’s doing is ensuring his place&nbsp;even if Hardik is fit’</h2>

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Rohan said, "We have been talking about him as, ‘Oh, listen, what if Hardik is unfit?’, I think what he is doing is making sure that even if Hardik is fit, he is on that plane in that World Cup squad. If you put in performances like this, it is very hard for anyone to drop you. It is going to be a really tough decision for the selectors if they decide to drop him. He is doing all that he can, which is giving the selectors a headache."

Dube making sure he is part of India’s 2024 T20 WC squad even if Hardik is fit, says Rohan Gavaskar

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar opened up on India's possible 2024 T20 World Cup squad after the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both Rohit and Kohli have returned to the T20I setup, after the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, for the Men in Blue's final series in the run-up to this year's T20 WC in West Indies and USA, slated to be held in June.&nbsp;

With Rohit and Kohli's return, it is highly likely that now the duo will take part in the mega event in mid-2024. Gavaskar feels the form of the T20 WC-bound players will be closely monitored during IPL 2024. He stated that if Rohit and Kohli perform even in five out of the 14 matches, minimum for all franchises, in IPL 2024, it can lead to their selection in the T20 WC squad.&nbsp;

"I feel the IPL form will be crucial because that will be the current form. The Afghanistan series is in January. The World Cup is in June. So whoever has good form in March, April and May should be given consideration first, that performance should be given consideration. Along with that, I will also say that even if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have an ordinary IPL, but they score runs there, you cannot score runs in every match, but suppose they make good contributions in five out of 14 matches, you will have to take advantage of their experience, and you can probably pick them in the team," Gavaskar told Star Sports.

‘If Rohit, Kohli have ordinary IPL…’: Gavaskar on India's possible T20 WC squad, makes BOLD suggestion

Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar has criticised the SENA (South Afrcia, England, New Zealand and Australia) countries for having double standards about the pitches. The comments come after India's second Test against South Africa in Cape Town got over inside two days. The Test, which India won by seven wickets, saw 23 wickets falling on the first day.

“These kind of excuses that the curator got it wrong is typical of the SENA countries,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for news outlet Mid-day.&nbsp;

“When our curators make a dry pitch then it’s ‘chicanery’, as a former Australian skipper said last year after the Aussies had been walloped in the first two Test matches," he added referring to Australia's tour of India in early 2023.

"So our groundsmen do it deliberately, but their groundsmen just get it wrong. It’s like before the third country umpires came in, where decisions by their umpires were excused as ‘human error’ while our umpires were cheats and ‘Delhi Butchers’ and all such derogatory headlines,” continued Gavaskar.

Notably, India skipper Rohit Sharma had also slammed the International Cricket Council (ICC) for pitch rating procedure after the Cape Town Test.&nbsp;

"It's okay for the ball to seam and swing from day one but not when it spins. In my opinion, this is unfair," Rohit had said.

India's next Test assignment is a five-Test home series against England and Gavaskar did not shy from throwing shades at the British media ahead of the tour.

“In about three weeks time another Test series starts with a country that has the biggest whingeing and moaning media in sport. Anything that doesn’t suit their team will be criticised and allegations will fly thick and fast,” he wrote.

England tour of India starts on January 25 with first Test set to be played in Hyderabad.

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar slams SENA countries for double-standards about pitches

Day One of the second and final Test between India and South Africa, at Newlands, Cape Town, saw as many as 23 wickets falling on Wednesday (Jan 3). The opening day of the New Year's Test saw Mohammed Siraj wreak havoc as his 6 for 15 dismissed the Proteas for 55. In reply, India were out for 153, managing a 98-run lead, before the Proteas ended the day's play at 62 for 3.

With wickets falling left, right and centre, former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar&nbsp;had no complaints about the Newlands track. He, however, took a shot at the SENA media (South Africa England New Zealand Australia media) and pointed out&nbsp;how they raise questions when so many wickets fall in a day in the subcontinent.&nbsp;

<h2>'If you cannot play on pitches where the ball turns into the batter, you're not a batter'</h2>

Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, "This is what Test cricket is all about. You are going to be tested. And I honestly believe I've always believed that if you cannot play on pitches where the ball turns into the batter, you know there is a tendency amongst the SENA country's media, particularly if you think that you know, if you can't play on fast, bouncy pitches, you're not a batter."

"I'm sorry. You are not a batter if you can't play the turning pitch because over here for the bouncy pitch, there are two movements here. There for four spinners, where the ball is turning, you've got to go down the pitch. You've got to use the crease. All the shots can be exhibited."

Gavaskar even questioned the Indian media's working style and why they won't criticise the batting ability of overseas players. He said, "So that's you know what? I think, sadly, you know, our media should be actually writing about this. You know, our media should be talking about the fact that you know, but our media is so dependent sometimes not all the time on getting interviews with players, so they do not want to upset anybody."

He added, "So they will not question the batting ability of some of the overseas guys because of that. But that's the way."

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has lauded Indian cricket for a successful run in the just-concluded 2023. Talking about the Indian cricket's achievements, the senior men's team won the Asia Cup and ended as runners-up in the home ODI World Cup and WTC final whereas the Harmanpreet Kaur-led women's team clinched gold in Asian Games and ended the year with a Test win each over England and Australia, in Mumbai, in December.

In addition,&nbsp;the Shafali Varma-led Indian team won the U-19 Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa. Thus, Gavaskar heaped praise on Indian cricket's magnificent run but rued Rohit Sharma &amp; Co.'s ODI WC final loss to Australia in Ahmedabad on Nov 19.

Speaking on Star Sports show 'Follow the Blues', Gavaskar spoke highly of the women's team and said, "I think it's been a fantastic year for both the men's and the women's team, particularly the way the women's team has performed. Those two Test wins towards the year-end, one against England and one against Australia, both teams against whom the Indian women's team have had tough times earlier on."

Former India player Sunil Gavaskar has highlighted a key flaw in Shubman Gill’s batting approach as India prepare for the second Test match against South Africa in Cape Town. Gill, a key member of the Indian side in 2023 has found it tough to adjust to the South African conditions as Rohit Sharma's men trail 1-0 in the Test series. According to Gavaskar, Gill’s aggressive approach is not helping him and needs to stay calm in the red-ball format.

<h2>Gavsakar highlights key factor</h2>

"I think he is playing a bit too aggressively in Test cricket. There is a slight difference when you play Test cricket when compared to T20I and ODI cricket. The difference is in the ball. The red ball moves a little more than the white ball in the air and off the pitch as well. It bounces a little more too. He should keep that in mind," Gavaskar told Star Sports.

"Shubman Gill started off his career so well and we praised his shots. We can only hope that he gets back into his form. Hope he trains harder and does well in the future,” the former World Cup winner added.

The 24-year-old has endured a tough outing during the Proteas tour having scored 36 runs in four innings with an average of 9. His lackluster form continued in the Centurion Test when he got out for 2 and 26 as India were crushed to an embarrassing defeat by the Proteas. Rohit Sharma’s men lost by an innings and 32 runs as their dream of winning a Test series on South African soil evaporated.

The teams will next meet on Wednesday (Jan 4) as India try to end the tour on a high in Cape Town. South Africa currently lead the two-match series 1-0 and can pocket the series with a draw. India on the other hand will have to win to level the series.

'Playing a bit too aggressively': Sunil Gavsakar highlights flaw in Shubman Gill's approach

Former legends Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar couldn’t help but laud KL Rahul for his knock on day one of the Centurion Test.

After India lost three wickets under 30 inside the first ten overs, most fans feared the same outcome the team has suffered in SENA countries in such situations. That, however, was far from reality as the crisis man KL Rahul weathered the storm and held his innings and India’s position together on day one at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Having returned from a leg injury (he suffered during the IPL this year), KL has been India’s best bet in the middle overs since. From scoring a hundred&nbsp;during the home World Cup to standing tall against a potent attack on foreign soil in Tests, Rahul has delivered at every stage.&nbsp;

Right after lunch on day one of the Boxing Day Test, when India lost two settled batters - Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, to Rabada, Rahul bailed the team out with his different approach, something even former legends took note of and hailed.

“He has made batting look easy. When you look at his footwork and the balance, it was pretty amazing. The knock also shows that the number is right for him in Test match cricket. I think he will get a lot of runs for India in the middle order,” Shastri said during the commentary on day one.

<h2>‘We are seeing a different KL Rahul’</h2>

Meanwhile, Gavaskar said, much like everyone, he was aware of Rahul’s potential. The former opener talked highly of the India batter returning from a lengthy layoff and delivering everything he has been asked to.

Gavaskar added, that KL’s fifty on day one on such a tricky Centurion track is as good as a century.

“We’ve known about his talent for such a long time, but we are getting to see it in the last eight, nine months, ever since he’s come back from this horrific injury that he had in the IPL, it’s a different Rahul. It’s a Rahul that we have been yearning to see for such a long time and such a delight to see. I said it in commentary as well that this half-century to me, is as good as a century,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

India lost eight wickets on day one of the Centurion Test (on 208), with KL Rahul top-scoring 70* (105), while Virat and Iyer contributed with 38 and 31, respectively. Kagiso Rabada was the standout bowler for the Proteas, picking five wickets thus far.&nbsp;

SA v IND: 'It's a different Rahul' - Shastri, Gavaskar laud India batter after his day 1 heroics

India and South Africa locked horns in the second and penultimate ODI, of the three-match series, on Tuesday (Dec 19) at St George's Park, Gqeberha. Asked to bat first, KL Rahul-led India only managed 211 in 46.2 overs -- with Sai Sudhardhan (62) and Rahul (56) being the top performers. In reply, the hosts rode on opener&nbsp;Tony de Zorzi's 119 and Reeza Hendricks' 52 to chase down the score in 42.3 overs with seven wickets in hand. With this, the series is interestingly poised at 1-1 with the final ODI in Paarl on Thursday (Dec 21).&nbsp;

After the game, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar opined on young Sudharshan and heaped praise on the left-hander. The batter became a household name following a brilliant 47-ball 96 in the IPL 2023 final for Gujarat Titans (GT), versus eventual winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Ahmedabad early this year. Being a consistent performer in the domestic circuit, he was roped into the India squad for the three ODIs in the African nation, with&nbsp;regular captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli being rested.

In the series opener, he scored an unbeaten 55 in India's easy 117-run chase and followed it up with an impressive 62 (7 fours and a six) in the second ODI. Thus, Gavaskar lauded him but had a suggestion for the GT batter.&nbsp;

<h2>'You don't want to be getting out in the 50s and 60s'</h2>

Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, "Yes, he looks very, very good. A very compact player plays close to his body, has got a good very still head. So balance is very good when he's playing. And, of course, when he plays drives like that. Left-handers can be so elegant when they play, they can play the pull shot as well. But basically his temperament and talent are very, very nice."

He then added, "Now it's a matter of them sort of carrying on from here and not being satisfied and I'm sure he's not being satisfied. You don't want to be getting out in 50s and 60s. When you bat up the order, you have the opportunity to score a 100 every time. So I think that is what he's got to grab so that somebody will be talking only about who will partner Sai Sudharsan at the top."

Sudharshan-starrer India will look to win the series when both sides meet in the third and final ODI on Thursday at Boland Park, Paarl. The series will be followed by the two Tests, which will see the return of Kohli, Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, Gill and other big names. It kicks off on December 26 in Centurion.

SA vs Ind, 2nd ODI: Sunil Gavaskar lauds Sai Sudharshan, shares THIS advice for young batter

On Friday (Dec 15), the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise dropped a bomb by announcing Hardik Pandya as the captain, bringing curtains on Rohit Sharma's successful captaincy era (comprising five IPL and one Champions League trophy). Hardik rejoined his first-ever IPL franchise on the IPL retention deadline day on Nov 26. He moved from Gujarat Titans (GT), where he led them to the championship in their inaugural season in 2022 and in the final in the 2023 edition, to his old franchise and many were speculating&nbsp;such a move by MI. However, after the announcement, the franchise has been facing a lot of backlash with many not impressed with the decision.&nbsp;

Many former cricketers have reacted to Hardik replacing Rohit as the MI skipper. Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar recently joined the bandwagon and stated that the decision will only benefit MI.

Speaking to Star Sports, Little Master Gavaskar said,&nbsp;"We shouldn't go into rights and wrongs. But, the decision they have taken is for the benefit of the team. In the last two years, Rohit's contribution, even with the bat, has dipped a little bit. Earlier, he used to score big, but in the last two years&nbsp;they finished No. 9 or No. 10 the year before last year and in the last year they qualified for the playoffs.&nbsp;But we missed seeing the mojo in Rohit Sharma that we used to see in the previous few years. Maybe, he was a little tired because of playing continuous cricket, he was a little tired because of captaincy, leading India and the franchise."

He added, "I feel that the decision, they have kept in mind that Hardik is a young captain who has produced results. Hardik has led Gujarat to the finals twice, and he led them to the title in 2022. I think they have made him captain by considering all this.&nbsp;At times, you need fresh thinking. Hardk brings in that fresh thinking. I think the decision will only benefit Mumbai Indians, it will not deter them."

Under Rohit, MI became a force to be reckoned with and won the IPL in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 whereas they also won the now-defunct CLT20 title in 2013. It will be interesting to see how the Mumbai franchise moves forward under Hardik, who tasted huge success as GT's captain in 2022-23.

IPL 2024: Hardik replacing Rohit as MI captain will benefit franchise, feels Little Master Sunil Gavaskar

Little Master Sunil Gavaskar lauded youngster Rinku Singh ahead of the start of India's all-format tour of South Africa. Gavaskar feels Rinku has grabbed the opportunities that came his way in the Indian Premier League (IPL), playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and the 26-year-old has done reasonably well in the limited chances given in T20Is. Ahead of Suryakumar Yadav-led India's three T20Is versus South Africa, in the African nation, Gavaskar stated that Rinku is being looked up on as the next 'Yuvraj Singh' and expectations are sky high from the left-hander.&nbsp;

Gavaskar hailed Rinku's self-belief&nbsp;while&nbsp;talking on Star Sports and said, "Talent - it's not given to everybody. You can love the game. You can play all day, but sometimes you know you might not quite have the talent, but he has the belief that he could do it, and that's what he's done over the last 2-3 years. Again here in the IPL, he was in and out of a lot of teams when he finally got the opportunity and the way he grabbed it (was amazing)."

In addition, Gavaskar stated that Indian fans are already comparing Rinku's ability with Yuvraj, who is one of the legendary Indian cricketers in white-ball formats. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has shut down the controversy surrounding the Wankhede pitch after a section of international media, in the lead-up to the India vs New Zealand semifinal claimed that BCCI had doctored the pitch to suit the host nation.&nbsp;

Speaking at a presser after the match, Williamson said the pitch was a used one but it played just the&nbsp;way a regular surface is supposed to.&nbsp;

"No, I mean, yeah it was a used wicket, but a pretty good surface really, as we saw. I mean, they got plenty out of it in the first half of the match. And conditions, I guess they change as they go under lights and things, and that's what we've seen throughout this competition," said Williamson.&nbsp;

The Wankhede pitch throughout the tournament has offered a little bit to spinners in the first half before giving the same incentive to fast bowlers under lights as humidity and light breeze come into consideration. The same happened on Wednesday (Nov 15) when Indian bowlers took the ball post 6:30 pm.&nbsp;

"That's what you expect and they played really well. So yeah, I mean it's disappointing to get to this stage and not go further, but also at the same time you sort of reflect on the seven weeks rather than a couple of small moments and we lost to a better side," added the Kiwi captain.

After the match, legendary former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, in a no-holds-barred monologue, slammed the critics of the pitch by terming them 'morons'.&nbsp;

"All the morons who were talking about the pitch change. Just stop. Stop taking potshots at Indian cricket. People have said a lot of things to attract eyeballs or whatever. It is all nonsense. The pitch was there and even if it was changed, it was there before the toss for both the teams," said Gavaskar.&nbsp;

"Stop talking about pitches. Already they are talking about Ahmedabad and the second semifinal hasn't even taken place. They are talking about the pitch being changed in Ahmedabad. Nonsense," he added.

<h2>What was the controversy?</h2>

According to reports, a fresh pitch was originally planned to be used&nbsp;for the semifinal.&nbsp;However, since India qualified for the first semifinal by topping the group stage, a used surface that assists the home team's spinners was employed for use, leading to accusations of pitch alteration.

While a section of media created furore regarding the fresh pitch, ICC released a statement saying no regulation was violated in the allotment of the surface.

The Indian spinners had a tough time on the pitch as Williamson and Daryl Mitchell never allowed them to settle. It was Mohammed Shami's genius with the ball that allowed India to walk away with a win when the Kiwis at one point, threatened to chase down 398.&nbsp;&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: Kane Williamson shuts down pitch controversy while Gavaskar terms critics 'morons'

Former India captain and World Cup winner Sunil Gavaskar is in awe of Team India after another dominating performance in the ODI World Cup on Sunday (Nov 5). Riding on the record-equaling ton from Virat Kohli and a fifer from Ravindra Jadeja, India won by 243 runs and sealed the top spot in the league structure. After the win, Gavaskar was full of praise for Rahul Dravid’s army as they now stand two knockout stage wins away from clinching the ODI World Cup in their homeland.

<h2>Gavaskar in awe of Team India</h2>

“You want to be the champions, you want to make sure that you win big. You want to show that you are the best team in the competition by a long distance, and that's exactly what the Indian team is doing at the moment. There is a match against the Netherlands which might be inconsequential because India is only now number one. But they don't want to stumble anywhere once it comes to the knock-out stages,” Gavaskar said while speaking to the broadcasters in the post-match.

<h2>Spinners run riot</h2>

Tasked to chase 327, the Proteas were never in the contest after they were bowled out for 83 runs with India on top throughout the contest. Ravindra Jadeja was the star of the show with five wickets before Virat had taken the spotlight with his 49th ODI hundred which saw him go level with Sachin Tendulkar. South Africa’s batting line-up had no answers to India’s dominance as bowlers wiped the floor on the Proteas. Only four batters got in double figures for South Africa as Marco Jansen top-scored with 14 on a dull day.

India’s eyes are now on the semifinals but are still unsure of where they will play as permutations could still see them return to Eden Gardens. If India play Pakistan in the semifinal, they will come back to play at the Eden Gardens with the Netherlands awaiting their final game in Bengaluru. However, if India play any other team, they will travel to Mumbai for a place in the final. South Africa on the flip side will also play in the semifinals before they face Afghanistan in their final league game.

ODI World Cup 2023: Sunil Gavaskar in awe of Team India after ruthless win against South Africa in Kolkata

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar feels Virat Kohli will score his 50th ODI ton during India's forthcoming World Cup clash versus South Africa on Nov 5, when Kohli will turn 35. The former Indian captain has been in top form in the ongoing ten-team tournament in India, with 354 runs in five games (most by an Indian, second-most overall).

He has had scores of 85, 55*, 16, 103* and 95. After his ton versus Bangladesh in Pune on Oct 19, Kohli reached his 48th ODI ton and is only one away from equaling Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's century tally (49); most by a batter in the 50-over format.&nbsp;

Gavaskar has, thus, made a bold claim that Kohli's merry run will continue and he will soon score the&nbsp;50th ODI hundred, going past Tendulkar's tally.&nbsp;

Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, "Kohli will slam his 50th ODI Century against South Africa at the Eden Gardens and what better occasion than his birthday? It's a sight when you slam a ton there because the Kolkata crowd gives you a standing ovation, and cheers for you, the air is filled with whistles and claps. It is a moment to savour for every batter."

At present, the Kohli-starrer Indian team has reached Lucknow for their upcoming game versus England on Sunday (Oct 29).

The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue have been in top form with five back-to-back wins and remain the only unbeaten side in the mega event. India will hope for their dream run to continue and for Kohli to also reach his 49th century soon and got to his 50th ton during the SA encounter in Kolkata.&nbsp;

In India's last game, they took on New Zealand in Dharamsala on Oct 22.

Opting to bowl first, India dismissed the Kiwis for 273 -- courtesy of Mohammed Shami's 5 for 54 -- and chased down the score in 48&nbsp;overs with Kohli top scoring with a fine 95.

He missed out on his 49th century by a whisker and will be eager to get there in the upcoming games and then aim for a historic 50th ODI ton.&nbsp;

CWC '23: Sunil Gavaskar predicts Virat Kohli to score 50th ODI ton during India's clash vs South Africa

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar feels India can give Jasprit Bumrah a break in the upcoming Bangladesh clash in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition, on Thursday (Oct 19) at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Gavaskar has suggested the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led Indian thinktank to bring in Mohammed Shami in place of Bumrah.

<h2>'Just a couple of days gap between Bangladesh and New Zealand face-off'</h2>

In an interaction with India Today, Gavaskar said, "I think Shami is someone who they have to bring into the team, because the next match in Dharamsala, in conditions which will assist a fast bowler. You need Jasprit Bumrah to be 100 percent there. Also, there is a just a couple of days gap between the game against Bangladesh in Pune and New Zealand in Dharamsala. There is going to be a change in weather also. Ideally, I think Jasprit Bumrah be given a bit of break and then maybe Shami comes in."

The Little Master further added, "You really are not losing anything with Shami coming back in the team. Siraj had a bit of a breather against the Australians in the 3-match series before the World Cup. Shami coming in against Bangladesh is something that the think tank might think of."

So far, Bumrah has been in top form in the ongoing World Cup at home. In the three games, he has churned out eight wickets and was adjudged the Player-of-the-Match for his 2 for 19 versus Pakistan. Shami, on the other hand, has not got a game and will be desperate to be included in the final XI.&nbsp;

Ahead of the India-Bangladesh tie, India's bowling coach Paras&nbsp;Mhambrey lavished huge praise on Bumrah in the pre-match presser and said, "You have seen him in the last three games that he has played, what he brings to the table, he is a world-class bowler. He gives you that breakthrough that you require in the power plays. He's well adapted to bowl in the middle overs and he's a top gun dead bowler."&nbsp;

Mhambrey hinted that India are likely to go unchanged in the game versus the Bangla Tigers.

CWC '23: Rest Bumrah, bring in Shami - Sunil Gavaskar wants India to ring in one change for Bangladesh tie

Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in pursuit of 345 in match 8 of the CWC 2023 edition on Tuesday (Oct 10) in Hyderabad.&nbsp;Sri Lanka opted to bat first and rode on centuries from Kusal Mendis (122) and&nbsp;Sadeera Samarawickrama (108) to post 344 for nine. While they hardly got going in the final few overs, it seemed like a winning score nonetheless.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In reply, Pakistan were even jolted early and were reeling at 37 for 2 with Imam-ul-Haq and skipper, and their Mr. Dependable, Babar Azam back in the pavallion. It appeared that the Men in Green would go down easily before opener Abdullah Shafique -- playing his first game in ODI World Cup -- and keeper-batter Mohammed Rizwan stood tall with an impressive 176-run third-wicket stand. Shafique's 113 and Rizwan's 131 not out led the one-time winners to a convincing six-wicket win.&nbsp;

After their win over Sri Lanka, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar lauded Rizwan-Shafique's show. He feels this bodes well for the side as no significant contribution came from Babar. He further opined that Pakistan need not depend solely on Babar now with many others standing up to the occasion.

Gavaskar said on Star Sports, "When you are chasing 350 runs, it takes a lot. They also lost a couple of early wickets in the game. I think more than anything else, I mean, we have all known about what Rizwan can do. But Abdullah Shafique, he looked like a Test batter. The way he anchored the innings with Rizwan, it was great."

The cricketer-turned-commentator added, "More than anything else, Pakistan would have realised that they do not have to depend on Babar. And if Babar fails, there are other batters who are there to score the runs. And I think that is such an important thing for Babar himself because the pressure will not be on him that he has to score all the time."

With the win over SL, Pakistan maintained their dominance over their Asian neighbours in World Cup history, leading 8-0.

Pakistan are at the second spot in the overall standings in the World Cup with two back-to-back wins. They will now face arch-rivals India on Saturday (Oct 14) in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

CWC '23: Pak don't have to depend on Babar anymore, feels Gavaskar after Rizwan-Shafique's heroics vs SL

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed bemusement after India decided to go with Shardul Thakur instead of Mohammed Shami for the World Cup clash against Afghanistan in New Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 10).&nbsp;

Shami, who had been a regular feature in the Indian lineup ahead of the World Cup, missed the first game as the management went ahead with R Ashwin on the spinning track of Chennai. However, many believed that Shami was an automatic choice for the flat Delhi pitch.&nbsp;

"It's a difficult call, but I guess as a group, you're looking to try and give as many of your players a little bit of an outing. And I would have thought with what Mohammed Shami had done against them in 2019, getting a hat trick and turning the game in the way he would get a go, because it's just a psychological thing. It's psychological," said Gavaskar.&nbsp;

The cricketer-turned-commentator recalled Shami's hattrick against Afghanistan in the 2019 World Cup, which eventually turned the tide in India's favour.&nbsp;

"He is a man who's who's taken a hat-trick. Play him. I know there will be a few changes in the Afghanistan lineup from 2019, but anyway, it's a call that has been made. Ashwin is used to this, you know, to be left out of the team. It's only going to make it that much more determined," said Gavaskar.&nbsp;

"But again, what India needs to do is to make sure that like they did against Australia, you know, try and restrict Afghanistan to as little as possible."

World Cup 2023, Ind vs Afg: Sunil Gavaskar surprised at omission of Mohammed Shami from playing XI

India will start their campaign in the CWC 2023 edition on October 8 (Sunday) when they face Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. While India ticked most of the boxes in the Asia Cup and home ODIs versus Australia, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. would be concerned with Ravindra Jadeja's batting struggles. Jadeja has not made a solid impression in the limited opportunities in recent times&nbsp;while batting down the order. He has not scored a half-century in the ODI format since 2020. However, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar isn't concerned with Jadeja's low returns and mentions a key aspect of Jadeja.&nbsp;

In response to a question from Hindustan Times, Gavaskar stated, "Not really. With the kind of experience that he has, it's not a worry. The important thing is that he is such a fast runner between the wickets. Often, we overlook it… the fact that from the non-striker end, he helps the batter convert ones into twos. So, I think those are the little things that are important. So yeah, I am not worried after Ravindra Jadeja at all. He is a top player, a wonderful player… rockstar, like Shane Warne once said."

Batting mostly at No. 7 or 8, Jadeja has played some vital knocks down the order but has not made a significant contribution. In the third and final ODI between India and Australia, in Rajkot on September 27, the 34-year-old all-rounder had a chance to get some runs under his belt and regain confidence, given India were out of the contest reeling at 249 for 6 in pursuit of a mammoth 353. However, the left-hander was seen struggling to get momentum and returned for a 36-ball 35.

The star all-rounder will be vital for India in the upcoming ODI World Cup at home. Not only with the ball, Jadeja will be needed with the bat as well -- down the order -- as Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led team management has often preferred batting depth.&nbsp;

The CWC 2023 edition kicks off on October 5 (Thursday) with defending champions England taking on New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

However, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar isn't concerned with Jadeja's low returns and mentions a key aspect of Jadeja. He is a top player, a wonderful player… rockstar, like Shane Warne once said." In the third and final ODI between India and Australia, in Rajkot on September 27, the 34-year-old all-rounder had a chance to get some runs under his belt and regain confidence, given India were out of the contest reeling at 249 for 6 in pursuit of a mammoth 353. However, the left-hander was seen struggling to get momentum and returned for a 36-ball 35. The star all-rounder will be vital for India in the upcoming ODI World Cup at home. Not only with the ball, Jadeja will be needed with the bat as well -- down the order -- as Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led team management has often preferred batting depth. The CWC 2023 edition kicks off on October 5 (Thursday) with defending champions England taking on New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. CWC 2023: Sunil Gavaskar reacts to Ravindra Jadeja's batting woes, points out 'little things' in his support

Legendary former India player Sunil Gavaskar has backed Jos Buttler’s England to clinch the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. The 1983 World Cup winner from India backed England to win the marquee tournament in 2019 and has asserted his faith in England for the upcoming edition. England are the defending champions having beaten New Zealand in a close final while they are also the T20 World champions, having won the title in 2022.

<h2>Gavaskar backs England</h2>

“The defending champions, England, because of the kind of talent that they have at, at the top of the order, the batting order, they've got two or three world-class all-rounders who can change the game with both bat and ball. They've also got a very good bowling line-up, an experienced bowling line-up, so at the moment in my book certainly,” said Gavaskar while speaking to Star Sports.

It is worth noting, that India will take on the defending champions on Saturday in their first warm-up game at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. A win for either side in the warm-up match will be a statement considering both have been in fluent form. India beat England in the three-match ODI series in July 2022, but plenty of water has gone under the bridge since as both will look to start the campaign on a high.

Both camps have been plagued with injuries with veteran stars returning to the fold for the World Cup. For India Ravichandran Ashwin will be in the squad having played only three matches during the last 18 months in ODI format. On the flip side, England also managed to bring back Ben Stokes out of retirement as he will be part of the squad.

India will start their World Cup campaign against five-time champions Australia in Chennai on Sunday, October 8 while England will take on New Zealand in the curtain-raiser on Thursday. The latter clash will be a repeat of the 2019 edition’s final as New Zealand will have a score to settle against Buttler’s army.
