Team India entered the knockouts of every ICC event, following their 2013 Champions Trophy win, but haven't been able to win a major title across formats. In the 2021 T20 World Cup, the Virat Kohli-led Indian team were touted to be one of the strongest contenders but the Men in Blue didn't even reach the semi-finals and bowed out with heavy defeats at the hands of Pakistan and New Zealand.

The year 2022 and 2023 will see India compete in two ICC tournaments, in the form of the next edition of the T20 World Cup and ODI World Cup, respectively. Hence, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has highlighted one area where Rohit Sharma-led Team India have to improve on to win the next two World Cups.&nbsp;

Gavaskar recalled India's historic 1983 World Cup triumph and wrote in his column for Mid-Day, "It was a squad of 14 players and one manager and we conquered the cricketing world. There were no field restrictions then, no limitations on the number of bouncers too and the red ball in English conditions which hardly stopped moving even after the shine was gone."

"That team were full of all-rounders and that is the key especially in limited overs cricket. Even the 2007 and 2011 teams had batsmen who could bowl and bowlers who were no bunnies with the bat. If India can find two all-rounders, then we will have a better chance in the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022 and in the 50 overs Cup at home in India in 2023."

At present, India's premier all-rounder Hardik Pandya is out of the scene due to injury concerns. The other options for Rohit &amp; Co. are in the form of Krunal Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Venkatesh Iyer, etc. Nonetheless, India will also hope for Hardik to recover soon and return in full flow to strengthen the national side in white-ball formats in the near future.&nbsp;

While India will look to end their ICC-title drought in the upcoming T20 and ODI WCs, they also have a chance to become the World Test champions if they win the ongoing second WTC cycle (which will conclude by early 2023).

Sunil Gavaskar mentions one area where Team India need to work on to win next two World Cups

Ravi Shastri's tenure as Indian team's head coach came to an end with the conclusion of the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE. For the unversed, Shastri served as a team director from mid 2014 to early 2016. He was touted to become the head coach back then itself but the position went to Anil Kumble. After a year, Shastri got the top post as his tenure officially commenced from mid-2017.

Under Shastri, India achieved sizeable success across all forms of the game. The former Indian all-rounder guided India to success in Sri Lanka, West Indies, two Test series wins in a row in Australia, helped the team take an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests in the UK early this year, led them to the WTC finals and 2019 ODI World Cup semi-finals. In addition, he guided the side to ODI series wins in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and T20I bilateral series triumphs in SENA countries.

At home, India remained a dominant force under Shastri. However, he couldn't guide the side to an ICC title during his four-year-stint as his tenure came to a disappointing end with India's disastrous run in the T20 WC. Recalling Shastri's near-flawless stint as head coach, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar mentioned the biggest highlight of his ex-teammate's coaching career.

Gavaskar recalled Shastri's famous words after the defeat in Adelaide to&nbsp;Star Sports&nbsp;and said, "It obviously has got to be the way India bounced back earlier this year after being dismissed for 36 (in Adelaide Pink Ball Test). Because when something like that happens, the team tends to lose belief in itself, there is a sense of disappointment and there is a sense of giving up.

"And that is where Shastri played a huge role because from what I've read, is that he said that 'you wear this 36 like a badge'. And then Ajinkya Rahane, the way he led the side in the three Tests, and of course everyone stepped up. We played almost like an A team, not even the regular team. But every player who played in that, every replaced player came in and did well. And that is again tells you the kind of influence and input that Ravi Shastri had on the younger players and the fringe players who are waiting for their opportunities," added the Little Master.

Under Shastri, India were down and out in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy after the 8-wicket drubbing versus Australia in the series opener at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. Nonetheless, the Kohli-less Indian side showed great character and fought fire with fire throughout the series to stage a comeback for the ages and eventually win&nbsp;2-1.&nbsp;

Now, Shastri has been succeeded by Rahul Dravid as India's head coach. Dravid-led Indian team is currently involved in the first Test, of the three-match series, versus South Africa in the African nation.

Kapil Dev-led Team India created history when they went onto win the country's maiden World Cup during the 1983 edition in England. Back then, not many had given India any chance to proceed further into the tournament after their flop performances in the first two editions, in 1975 and 1979.

While Kapil &amp; Co. started their campaign with two wins in a row, they soon fell flat with equal number of defeats as they faced Zimbabwe, for the second time, on June 18, 1983. It was a must-win game for India, who had convincingly lost their last two encounters. Opting to bat first, at&nbsp;Nevill Ground, Tunbridge Wells, India were off to a nightmarish start as they were reduced to 17-5 in no time.

Losing hopes of survival, Kapil formed handy partnership with Roger Binny before his unbeaten 126-run ninth-wicket stand with wicketkeeper-batsman Syed Kirmani took India to 266/8. Kapil and Kirmani remained unbeaten as the skipper's 175 took India to a competitive score.

Recalling his partnership with Kapil and how the Indian captain led the side's recovery, Kirmani was quoted as saying by the Indian Express, "I walked up to Kapil, who was standing there, his head down. It was a 60-over game and we still had 35 overs left in our innings. I told Kapil, ‘listen Kaps, we are in a do-or-die situation. We just cannot sit and die’. ‘Maar ke marne ka hai (we will go down hitting)’, he said.

"I tried to inspire him saying, ‘you are the best hitter in the Indian team. I will take singles and will give you strike. You will try to hit every delivery’. He said, ‘Kiri bhai, humko aur 35 overs khelna hai (we still have to play 35 overs). I will try my best’."

For the unversed, Kapil's innings comprised 16 fours and 6 gigantic sixes. In reply, Zimbabwe were dismissed for 235 as Kapil, Madan Lal and Binny led the charge with the ball.&nbsp;

From thereon, India gained momentum and reached the final, setting up a clash versus the two-time winners Clive Lloyd-led West Indies.

In the summit clash, Windies bundled out India for 183 after inviting them to bat first. Kirmani recalled Kapil's words during the mid-innings and said, "Even when India could only score 183 runs in the final against West Indies, Kapil had not lost hope. “Even after we were all out for 183 in the final, we weren’t looking back. We had nothing to lose. Kapil said, ‘let’s go and give our best’. We had already overachieved. We decided to put our best foot forward."

As a result, India managed to pull off an upset and beat West Indies by 43 runs, dismissing them for 140 courtesy Madan and vice-captain Mohinder Amarnath's three-fers.&nbsp;

Syed Kirmani recalls Kapil Dev's majestic 175* in must-win WC game vs Zimbabwe before '83' hits screens

Kabir Khan’s '83' recreating the events leading up to Indi's victory in the cricket &nbsp;World Cup Series is one of the most talked-about films in recent times. Ranveer Singh and Deepika &nbsp;Padukone who play legendary cricketer Kapil Dev and his wife Romi are hoping to leap one-up on their hat-trick of Bhansali-helmed superhits—'Ram Leela', 'Bajirao Mastani' and &nbsp;'Padmaavat'. Will '83' break the records of &nbsp;Ranveer-Deepika’s earlier blockbusters? Here’s why '83' is one of the eagerly awaited films of the year.

1)&nbsp;It is cricket. It's a religion in India. Not since Ashutosh Gowariker's 'Lagaan' has a film on cricket been so eagerly awaited by the movie-going public. As director Kabir Khan said, this is the proudest film he has made to date. Coming from the director of 'Kabul Express', 'New York', 'Ek Tha Tiger' and 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan', '83' being the most special film of his career is truly a &nbsp;confession worth underlining.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/bollywood/news-_3-review-ranveer-singh-and-his-men-smash-it-out-of-the-park-with-this-glorious-chapter-of-history-438606" hreflang="en">'83' review: Ranveer Singh and his men smash it out of the park with this glorious chapter of history</a>

2)&nbsp;It is cricket and Kapil Dev. Now it can be told that many directors in the past tried making a film on the life of Kapil Dev and failed. In 2001 Anurag Kashyap was all set to direct a film on the life and games of Kapil Dev. It was going to be a &nbsp;big-budgeted Rs 80 crores opus(which for those times was a fortune, equivalent to &nbsp;160 crores today) &nbsp;with &nbsp;Kapil starring as himself. When I had asked Kapil who would play Kapil he had drawled in his typical Kapil da jawaab nahin style, “Who else can play Kapil Dev but me? Of course, I can’t sing and dance. But the rest of my &nbsp;life is &nbsp;my life only.” The Kashyap project never got off the ground, like many of his pipedreams. &nbsp;Ironically &nbsp;'83' is co-produced by Phantom Films the production house which Kashyap once belonged to and which he finally broke up.

3)&nbsp;Kapil Dev insisted '83' is not about him. When I spoke to him after the film was announced he told me irritably, “First of all, it is not a film on me. So it is not my bio-pic. It is a &nbsp;film about the 1983 &nbsp;World Cup. Not about me.” &nbsp;When I &nbsp;gently pointed out that, Kapil was an integral part of the &nbsp;1983 &nbsp;World Cup series he snapped back, &nbsp;“I was! But so were Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath and so many others. So the &nbsp;film will probably be as much about them like me.”

4) Ranveer Singh's Kapil Dev is captaining the film titled '83' based on India’s historic victory at the 1983 Cricket World Cup. But he won't be the only central character of the drama. All the 12 players would be given prominence. This will be cricket’s 'Chak De! India' without Shah Rukh Khan.In fact, the producers got the written, legally sanctioned consent of each of the 12 players, all of whom agreed to come on board as consultants. Each of the 12 players is played by an actor capable of conveying the character’s personality The fabulously balanced film is not looking at making Kapil Dev a bigger hero say, Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal, just because Ranveer plays Kapil Dev. They will all be equally important to the plot. Besides Ranveer Singh, the film casts actors, not stars in '83'.Because the project needed that one-star presence to give the film visibility in the public eye. For the rest of the cast of cricketers, they were keen on getting brilliant actors on board who must also be fantastic cricket players.Says Kabir Khan, “We are not focussing on the game itself. We are going to focus &nbsp;on what went on behind the scenes, the greenroom politics leading up to India’s most spectacular victory,”

5)&nbsp;It is widely believed that Deepika Padukone, as Mrs Kapil Dev has little to do in the film. Not true! Deepika actually has a substantial role, as she plays the power behind the throne. The original plan was to focus largely on the cricketers. But with Deepika joining the cast Romi, Kapil Dev’s role expanded almost automatically. More power to girl power.

5 reasons why Kabir Khan's '83' is the most anticipated film of the season

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes the upcoming Test series in South Africa is India's best chance at beating the Proteas in their own backyard and finally clinching a Test series win in the Rainbow nation. India have been a force to reckon with in Test cricket over the years and have proved their mettle both at home and overseas under captain Virat Kohli.

The Indian team will head into the South Africa series on a confident note having recently beaten New Zealand 1-0 in the two-match series at home. Gavaskar believes the absence of some of the key campaigners in South Africa presents India with a great chance at winning the upcoming Test series against the hosts.&nbsp;

India will play three Tests in South Africa as part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) with the first Test in Centurion getting underway from December 26 (Sunday). South Africa will be without both AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis, who have already retired while wicket-keeper batter Quinton de Kock is likely to miss a part of the series. De Kock might miss the second and third Tests having asked for paternity leave.

"Coming to India's tour of South Africa, the turmoil with the release of the SJN report indicting three former South African greats is certainly not going to help the home team," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

"There is also talk about Quinton de Kock, who loves Indian bowling, not being available to play the second and third Test. That weakens a fragile batting line-up even more and presents India with its best-ever chance of winning a Test series there," he added.

India lost their last Test series 2-1 against South Africa away from home when Du Plessis was in charge of the hosts. However, this time around India will start as favourites against the Dean Elgar-led side. Besides De Kock, South Africa are also set to miss the services of pacer Anrich Nortje, who has been ruled out of the Test series due to a persistent injury.

Gavaskar has backed India to clinch glory in South Africa this time around and script history by winning their maiden Test series in the country which will help them complete the cycle of winning a Test series in every Test-playing country.

"If they do that it will truly be the crowning glory and complete the circle of India winning a Test series in every Test-playing country. South Africa is the last hurdle and once that’s done then the sky is the limit for Indian cricket," said Gavaskar.

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes the upcoming Test series in South Africa is India's best chance at beating the Proteas in their own backyard and finally clinching a Test series win in the Rainbow nation.

The Indian team will head into the South Africa series on a confident note having recently beaten New Zealand 1-0 in the two-match series at home. Gavaskar believes the absence of some of the key campaigners in South Africa presents India with a great chance at winning the upcoming Test series against the hosts. Sunil Gavaskar explains why Kohli & Co. have the best chance of winning upcoming Test series vs South Africa

Virat Kohli-led Team India's Test side has arrived in South Africa for a three-match Test series, starting from December 26.&nbsp;

Under Kohli, India have won a Test series in Australia (twice but once under Ajinkya Rahane), have an unassaiable lead over England in the five Tests in the United Kingdom (early this year) and will now aim to win their first-ever Test series on South African soil. For that to happen, the 33-year-old Kohli will have to be at his very best with the bat.

For the unversed, Kohli hasn't scored a century in international cricket since late 2019 and his recent form in whites isn't upto the mark. Thus, he will have to lead from the front with the willow in hand. Little Master Sunil Gavaskar feels Kohli can return to his usual best and score centuries after centuries, like he used to, with no burden of limited-overs captaincy.&nbsp;

"We may see the Virat from two years ago, slamming centuries after centuries," the former India captain said on Sports Tak.

Gavaskar also opined that the white-ball formats' captaincy will help Rohit Sharma, who has often excelled under pressure and with added responsibilities. In this regard, he said, "We have also seen that when Rohit Sharma was made captain of Mumbai Indians, he took those scored of 20, 30 and 40 runs and converted them into big scores. When you are captain, you play with a lot more responsibilities. Your shot selection gets better. You know you have to set an example and MI reaped the benefits by winning the title five times. It is possible to see Rohit score even more runs once he is the white-ball captain."

We may see Virat Kohli from two years ago slamming centuries after centuries, predicts Sunil Gavaskar

Team India's Test captain Virat Kohli addressed the media in BCCI's customary press conference before the national side left for South Africa, for three Tests and equal number of ODIs. On Wednesday (December 15), the 33-year-old Kohli interacted with the press to clear the air on a number of issues pertaining to Indian cricket.

In recent times, there has been several changes in the men's cricket team with Rohit Sharma being appointed the limited-overs captain, resulting in Kohli's sacking as ODI skipper. Hence, rumours of alleged rift between Rohit and Kohli spread like wildfire before the latter rubbished all such claims in the press conference.

'This is.....' - Sunil Gavaskar reacts as Virat Kohli promises 'absolute support' to Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid

Virat Kohli, on Wednesday (December 15), answered several questions from the media in BCCI's customary press conference before Team India's departure for South Africa, where they play three Tests and ODIs each.&nbsp;

During the presser, Kohli was asked to react to the ODI captaincy switch in Indian cricket, share his equation with Rohit Sharma, open up on whether he had any communication with the BCCI before quitting as T20I captain and more.&nbsp;

On quitting as T20I captain, Kohli stated, "I had told BCCI that I want to quit T20I captaincy. I wasn't told to reconsider it. It was received well, without any hesitation; I was told it's a progressive step and it's in the right direction. I had told them that I want to continue ODI and Test captaincy unless the office bearers think otherwise. I had given that option to them."

On the other hand, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly had revealed that he had a conversation with Kohli and had also requested him to continue as the T20I captain before his resignation.&nbsp;

Thus, with contradictory claims from Kohli and Ganguly, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has now joined the bandwagon and reacted to the developments.&nbsp;

Gavaskar told India Today, "I think it (Kohli’s comments) actually doesn’t bring the BCCI into the picture. I think it’s the individual who has to be asked where he got the impression he had conveyed such a message to Kohli. So that’s the only thing. Yes, he is the BCCI president and surely he should be asked why there is this discrepancy. He is probably the best person to ask about the discrepancy in what you seem to have to say and what the Indian captain has said."

"Yes, it always helps to have a clear line of communication so that there is no speculation. So from now, from what has happened, there should be a clear line of communication and the chairman of the selection committee can come down and say why he has been picked and why he has not been picked. Sometimes, even if that is not needed, a press release is also good enough. A good press release giving all the reasons makes life a lot easier," Gavaskar added.

Gavaskar further asserted, "As long as it’s not something that he has not found out from the media or as it happened in the past that the commander of a passenger flight announced it, I think he has been told by the chairman of the selection committee that he is not going to be the captain, I think that is absolutely okay."

"I don’t know what these people wanted to do. As long as there has been communication between the chairman of selection and him, it’s the decent thing to do. Over there, what the conversation was, I am not aware. Maybe the chairman of the selection committee also said ‘thank you so much," he concluded.

Virat Kohli's explosive presser: Ganguly should be asked why there is this discrepancy, says Gavaskar

Team India have seen various changes in the leadership group post the T20 World Cup in the UAE. Ravi Shastri was succeeded by Rahul Dravid as the head coach whereas Rohit Sharma took over as the T20I captain, after Virat Kohli's resignation.&nbsp;

Last week, BCCI replaced Kohli as the ODI captain as Rohit has become the new limited-overs captain of Team India. In addition, Hitman has been promoted as Kohli's deputy in Test cricket; replacing Ajinkya Rahane.&nbsp;

While many have reacted to the above-mentioned changes in the Indian team, there are some who feel things aren't at its best between Rohit and Kohli post the ODI captaincy switch. The speculations increased as reports started flowing in that Kohli is set to skip the India-South Africa ODIs, in the African nation early in 2022, following the recent turn of events.&nbsp;

Kohli's likely unavailability for the ODIs started doing the rounds after news came in that Rohit will miss the preceding three Tests versus South Africa due to injury. Thus, many believe there's a rift between the two superstar cricketers.

We shouldn't jump to conclusions: Gavaskar reacts as many sniff rift between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

England captain Joe Root has been enjoying stellar form with the willow in Tests so far this year. He is the highest run-getter in the longest format as far as 2021 is concerned and is now closing in on the records of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar after a brilliant knock of unbeaten 86 in England's second innings of the ongoing 1st Ashes Test against Australia at The Gabba in Brisbane.

After being dismissed on a duck in the first innings, Root bounced back with a superb knock under pressure in his side's second innings to help England fight back in the game. Root scored 86 runs off 158 balls with the help of ten fours and added a crucial unbeaten stand of 159 runs with Dawid Malan (80) to help the visitors end Day 3 on 220/2, trailing the Aussies by 58 runs.

With his unbeaten 86, Root surpassed former England captain Michael Vaughan to bag the record for most runs by an English batter in a calendar year in Test cricket. Root has now taken his tally to 1541 runs in Test matches this year and is on the verge of breaking the records of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar.

Joe Root closes in on Sachin, Gavaskar's record:

Root is currently placed eighth on the all-time list of batters with most Test runs in a calendar year. The list is topped by Pakistan's Mohammad Yousuf, who notched up a stunning 1788 runs in just 11 Test matches in 2006. Yousuf is followed by West Indies legend Viv Richards (1710 runs in 1976) and former South Africa captain Graeme Smith (1656 runs in 2008) at the second and the third spot respectively.

Root is just four runs away from overtaking former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who scored 1544 runs in Test matches in 2005. Root can also break the records of Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar, who are placed fifth and sixth respectively with 1555 and 1562 runs in a calendar year.

Most runs in a calendar year&nbsp;

1) Mohammad Yousuf (PAK) - 1788&nbsp;runs in 2006&nbsp;
2) Vivian&nbsp;Richards (WI) - 1710 runs in 1976

Team India opener Mayank Agarwal continued his purple patch with the willow in India's second innings of the ongoing second Test against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. Agarwal, who had slammed a magnificent century in the first innings, followed it up with a brilliant fifty in the second innings. However, he missed out on a chance to notch up twin hundreds in the Test match as he fell for 62 in the second innings.

Agarwal was on the verge of becoming the only seventh Indian batter to score a century in both innings of a Test match. He looked in sublime touch and played with great control during the second innings against the Kiwis but was dismissed on 62 by Ajaz Patel in the 32nd over. Nonetheless, he managed to enter an elite list featuring the legendary Sunil Gavaskar.

Agarwal joined the elite list of Indian batters to have scored back-to-back fifty-plus scores as an opener in a Test match at the Wankhede Stadium. He emulated the likes of Gavaskar (205, 73 in 1978), Chetan Chauhan (52, 84 in 1978) and Kris Srikkanth (71, 65 in 1987). His half-century helped India take their lead past the 400-run mark in the Mumbai Test.

With the help of Mayank's 150-run knock, India had posted a strong total of 325 runs on the board in their first innings despite a brilliant spell from spinner Ajaz Patel, who picked up a historic ten-wicket haul, becoming only the third bowler in Test history to take all ten wickets in an innings of a Test match.

However, New Zealand failed to capitalise as they were bundled out for a paltry 62 in their first innings and ended up conceding a massive lead of 263 runs to the hosts. India have now extended their lead to over 470 runs in their second innings as they look to secure a big win in the second Test.

INDvsNZ, 2nd Test: Mayank Agarwal reveals how legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar's advice helped him

Legendary Sunil Gavaskar slammed New Zealand for their timid batting in the second innings of the first Test at the Green Park stadium in Kanpur.

Despite Tom Latham and William Somerville setting up a superb platform for their team in the second innings, Gavaskar said the visitors were not playing for a win; they just managed to hold on to a draw.

India were just one wicket away from victory, but New Zealand batsmen Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel played out over 50 deliveries to help the Kiwis draw the Test.

"New Zealand managed to hold on by the skin of their teeth at Kanpur. Their timid batting after a terrific first session on the final day brought India back into the game, and once they started to get wickets in the second session, they simply piled on more pressure as they realised that the visitors were only keen on survival and not looking for a victory," Gavaskar wrote for TOI.

Gavaskar is of the opinion that New Zealand pulled the shutters down completely and that allowed Indian skipper Ajinkya Rahane to set an attacking field.

"At lunchtime, Rahane and Dravid would have been a touch worried, for Latham and Somerville had set up a perfect platform for the following batsmen to play their normal game and take New Zealand home. Then, inexplicably, the shutters were pulled down, and all that it did was allow Rahane to keep men in catching positions," added Gavaskar.

The 72-year-old Gavaskar concluded by stating that this draw will make a difference as the Test series rolls on, as a place in the final of the second cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) is at stake.

"There is a place in the finals of the World Test Championships at stake for both these finalists, and so sharing the points will certainly make a difference as the series goes on," he said.

Shreyas Iyer became India's 303rd Test cricketer on Thursday morning (November 25) as he received the elusive cap from legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar ahead of the commencement of the first Test between India and New Zealand.&nbsp;

Iyer was a big name in domestic circuit before he made his India debut in the limited-overs format in 2017. While Iyer has been in the scheme of things for Team India in the shorter formats following the 2019 ODI World Cup, the right-hander had to wait for a long period to get a look-in the Test line-up. With many regulars such as captain Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, etc. being rested for the New Zealand Test series opener, Iyer got a chance to make his debut as soon as KL Rahul got ruled out due to injury on Tuesday (November 23).

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar hailed India's new T20I skipper Rohit Sharma, saying that it is a 'new beginning' for Indian Twenty20 cricket under his leadership. Rohit will succeed Virat Kohli as captain when they take on New Zealand in a three-match Twenty20 series at home this month. Fellow opener KL Rahul has been named Rohit's deputy. Kohli had stepped down as captain ahead of the T20 World Cup, where India failed to make the semi-finals after finishing third in the group behind Group 2 leaders Pakistan and New Zealand. ALSO READ | Tasmania to submit pitch to country's cricket board to swipe Ashes Test from Perth Commenting on the Indian cricket board BCCI's decision, Gavaskar told India Today, "Rohit Sharma is absolutely ready to carry the baton forward. It is a new beginning for Indian T20 cricket under the leadership of Rohit." Sharma made his debut in 2007 for the national team, initially playing limited-overs cricket before being included in the Test team in 2013. He has also captained the Mumbai Indians to victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) five times. Weighing in on Rohit's IPL success, Gavaskar said, "Generally, a captain is only as good as his team. I know Rohit has won five IPL trophies under his captaincy but leading a national team is completely different to leading your state team or franchise." In the series against New Zealand, Kohli has been rested against the Kiwis along with pacemen Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The selectors have made a number of changes to the squad that featured in the United Arab Emirates, bringing in the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Venkatesh Iyer, Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel, while dropping all-rounder Hardik Pandya. The first T20 is scheduled for Jaipur on November 17 followed by games in Ranchi on November 19 and Kolkata on November 21. India's squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Venkatesh Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Harshal Patel, Mohd. 'Leading a national team is completely different': Sunil Gavaskar reacts to Rohit Sharma's success in IPL

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has picked the best man to lead India in T20Is after Virat Kohli stepped down as the captain of the side in the shortest format. Kohli cited workload issues as he explained his decision to quit T20I captaincy after leading India for one last time in their final Super 12 game against Namibia in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 on Sunday.

India had a disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup 2021 as they failed to reach the semis after suffering back-to-back defeats in their first two games. India ended their campaign with three wins and two defeats in five matches in what was Kohli's last tournament as captain in T20Is. He will continue leading the Indian team in ODIs and Tests.

After Kohli's departure as captain, Gavaskar has named the ideal replacement for him as India's next T20I captain. The former India captain believes India should not look at a long-term captaincy change at present and appoint Rohit Sharma as the skipper in T20Is considering the T20 World Cup 2022 is less than a year away.

"Long term is in case the next World Cup is maybe 2 years away or 3 years away. Next World Cup is just 10-12 months away. You don't have to really look long term now," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

"Right now, you have to look for the best man who can take India to an ICC trophy. And that is Rohit Sharma with his record for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, he is an obvious choice. I think he should be given the captaincy and maybe after next year's World Cup in Australia, maybe have a look at another T20 captain. But right, now it's only Rohit Sharma," he added.

The game will also decide Team India's fate in the tournament as a defeat for Afghanistan will confirm Virat Kohli &amp; Co.'s exit.

New Zealand are currently placed second in Group 2 with six points from four matches so far and are in a must-win situation to retain their second spot. A loss against Afghanistan will see their campaign come to an end on Sunday. The equation is a simple one for them as they have their fate in their own hands and need a win to finish second and qualify for the semi-finals.

On the other hand, Afghanistan can qualify if they manage to beat New Zealand by a huge margin and increase their net run rate to an extent that India can't catch them in their game against Namibia. An Afghanistan win will also keep India alive in the competition and the Kohli-led side can qualify if they can thrash Namibia by a big margin in their final Super 12 game.

Ahead of the all-important encounter between Afghanistan and New Zealand, many have touted star spinner Rashid Khan as the game-changer against the Kiwis. However, former India captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman will be the key for Afghanistan against Kane Williamson's men. Mujeeb had missed Afghanistan's last game against India due to an injury and is expected to be fit for the New Zealand game.

"I just want Mujeeb to be fit for that game. That would mean an additional mystery spinner against New Zealand. If he along with Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi can weave their magic then. Yesterday against Afghanistan India got a little toe-in. Now they will have to hold forte. If Afghanistan beat New Zealand, they have smashed the door," Gavaskar told Star Sports.&nbsp;

Gavaskar said Mujeeb can be the major threat for the New Zealand batsmen as he is hard to pick and has got experience of playing T20 cricket around the world. The spinners will have to play a crucial role if Afghanistan are to pull off an upset against New Zealand on Sunday.

After India's eight-wicket loss at the hands of Kane Williamson-led New Zealand, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, the Virat Kohli-led Men in Blue are struggling to survive in the T20 World Cup. The one-time winners India still have three games to play in the Super 12 round, however, they need to win all games and also depend upon other results to progress ahead into the last four.

Post India's drubbing versus the Black Caps, speedster Jasprit Bumrah addressed the reporters in the post-match press conference. Replying to a question, Bumrah blamed the bio-bubble fatigue as one of the striking factors behind India's dismal run in the seventh edition of the T20 WC, being held in the UAE.

He told on Sports Today, "Well look, when you are playing for India, everything has got to recede to the background. It's as simple as that. 'Nobody should be.....': Gavaskar unimpressed with Jasprit Bumrah's bubble-fatigue remark post NZ loss

Team India squared off with New Zealand in their second Super 12 encounter in the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, being held in the UAE. After losing to Babar Azam-led Pakistan by ten wickets, the pressure was on Virat Kohli &amp; Co. to bounce back and keep themselves alive in the semi-finals race.

However, the one-time winners India fell flat in their face-off versus Kane Williamson-led New Zealand, on Sunday evening (October 31) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Being asked to bat first, the Men in Blue were restricted to 110/7, courtesy Trent Boult's 3-fer and Ish Sodhi's 2 for 17. In reply, the Black Caps completed the run-chase with 8 wickets and 33 balls to spare.

With another heavy defeat, India are on the brink of elimination. While nothing has clicked for India in the main draw of the competition so far, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar has lashed out at Kohli &amp; Co. for demoting vice-captain Rohit Sharma to No. 3, to accommodate Ishan Kishan at the top.

Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar&nbsp;said, "Ishan Kishan is a hit-or-miss player and it is better if a batsman like him walks in No.4 or No.5. He could then play according to the situation of the game. Now what has happened is that Rohit Sharma has been told that we don't trust you to face the left-arm fast bowling of Trent Boult."&nbsp;

"If you do that to a player who has been playing at a position for so many years, he himself will think that maybe he doesn't have the ability. If Ishan Kishan had made 70-odd runs we would have applauded. But when the ploy doesn't work, you are going to be criticised," he added.

'India didn't trust Rohit Sharma against Trent Boult' - Sunil Gavaskar baffled by Hitman's demotion vs NZ

After India suffered a 10-wicket loss to the arch-rivals Pakistan in their first match of the T20 World Cup, the former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has suggested changes that the Indian skipper Virat Kohli can make in the upcoming crunch clash against New Zealand on Sunday (October 31).&nbsp;

In their campaign opener on October 24, India faced a humiliating defeat against Pakistan after Pak skipper Babar Azam led his team from the front to hand the team a historic win. Chasing 152 to win, Mohammad Rizwan (79) and Babar (68) put on a remarkable show as Pakistan reached their target with 13 balls to spare. Pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi set up victory with figures of 3-31 that kept their opponents to 151-7 despite a valiant 57 from skipper Virat Kohli.&nbsp;

Now, Gavaskar has suggested that Ishan Kishan can be considered as&nbsp;a replacement for&nbsp;India's star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who&nbsp;is not bowling due to injury. The former player then suggested that Shardul Thakur should be added in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.&nbsp;

"And perhaps, you can think of Shardul Thakur in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. But otherwise, if you make too many changes, then you will show the opposition that you have panicked," he added.&nbsp;

T20 WC: Gavaskar names replacements for Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar for crunch clash against New Zealand

Team India will begin their campaign in the main draw of the T20 World Cup 2021, versus arch-rivals Pakistan on October 24 (Sunday), at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. The Men in Blue are one of the favourites for the marquee event and will like to win their second title in the seventh edition of the T20 WC.

While Virat Kohli-led India have a daunting line-up, comprising Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, etc., the Indian team will feel the pressure to win the ICC event as they haven't won any major title since their triumph in the 2013 Champions Trophy. Following that, India have entered the semi-finals in every preceding ICC event, however, couldn't return with the title.

Speaking at length on India's recent struggles in ICC knockouts since 2013 CT win, where they've lost three finals and equal number of semis during this period, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar said they need to change their selection process and pointed out few other important aspects that need to be tweaked.

Even if you score 140, it is difficult for the opposition to maintain 7 rpo in the chase; specifically in international cricket."

"We haven't done that (batted first). Batting second invites pressure; if you lose wickets early, you need a consolidation period of 7-8 overs, so it becomes difficult to catch up," he added.&nbsp;

T20 WC: Sunil Gavaskar decodes reasons behind India's failures in ICC knockouts

The Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2021 is all set to get underway from October 23 (Saturday) with Australia set to take on South Africa in Abu Dhabi. India will open their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai on October 24 in what is expected to be a blockbuster clash between the arch-rivals.

Ahead of the face-off between India and Pakistan, predictions have been flowing thick and fast as former cricketers and experts give their take on the game. While sharing his views on the India-Pakistan rivalry, former India captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar said he would like to see the two teams reach the final of the T20 World Cup 2021.

Gavaskar claimed even the International Cricket Council (ICC) would like to see India and Pakistan reach the final as the viewership will soar dramatically and the hype surrounding the game will be immense.

“I would like to see India in that final, and Pakistan. What else does anybody want? Even the ICC wants India and Pakistan to be in the final,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

Former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram also backed India and Pakistan to make it to the last four of the tournament. The legendary fast bowler was asked to pick his semi-finalists and he went with England, India, Pakistan and West Indies as favourites to reach the knockouts.

“New Zealand’s chances really depend on the weather I feel. It is hot now and if it remains like this, it will be difficult for them but then by October, it will be pleasant. For me, the four sides that can reach semis are India, West Indies, Pakistan, and England,” said Akram.

India and Pakistan are placed in Group 2 of the Super 12 and will look to get off to a winning start on October 24. India have never lost against Pakistan in the history of T20 World Cup with five wins in five matches.

Want to see India and Pakistan in T20 World Cup 2021 final, says Sunil Gavaskar

A mentor can only help as much because it is the players who will have to go out there and perform the "actual task", the legendary Sunil Gavaskar said on the appointment of Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the Indian team mentor for the T20 World Cup.

India will play Pakistan on Sunday in the Super 12s and Gavaskar feels that in this format Virat Kohli's team can't be termed clear favourites.

"Mentor can't do much," Gavaskar told Aaj Tak. "Yes, he can help you prepare in change room as its a fast-paced game and if needed, help you tweak the tactic."

"May be speak to batters and bowlers during time-out, so the move to employ Dhoni is a good one but Dhoni will be in the change room and its the players who have to perform the actual task in the middle. How they handle pressure would determine what the result will be," Gavaskar said during the event.

Gavaskar feels Kohli will feel lesser pressure now that he has decided to quit captaincy in the T20 format.

"When you become a captain, you can't just think about yourself, he has to speak to a batter who is going through a bad patch or discuss strategies with a bowler.

"Amid all this, one tends to neglect his own form. When you don't have that pressure, you can focus on your own game. I think it will be good for Virat that after T20 World Cup, he doesn't have to think about responsibilities.

"So he can focus on his own game and score as many runs as possible," he added.

Gavaskar, one of the most respected voices in world cricket, also pointed out that India's failure to win knock-out games in global tournaments has been primarily due to the faulty team selections.

"India's problem in big matches has been team combination. If they would have got final XI selection right in knock out games, they would have had less problems. At times, your thought process is different," he said.

"In knock-outs and finals, you should bat first, put runs on the board, whatever you put, 140 may be, the other team has to score and it's not always easy to score at seven runs per over in international cricket," he explained.

"So when we haven't batted first, in a chase, if you lose one or two wickets, you consolidate and then catch up becomes a problem and they (Indian batters) have been found wanting."

In T20 cricket, Gavaskar has found one flaw with the Indian batting and that's losing momentum between overs 7 and 12.

"India's batting weakness has been in the overs after Powerplay, between 7 and 12. After 7 overs, we start struggling. It will be great if we can bat well in those four to five overs and score 40 runs," he said.

But Gavaskar was pretty clear that India do not start as favourites.

"In T20 cricket, it's not difficult to beat any team. Yes, in Tests, you can say that whether you have that kind of depth in batting or bowling matters. But in T20, no team is favourite and the team that makes less mistakes will win," he said.

Gavaskar had one advice for the teams.

"Just giving it your all at times might not be sufficient. With hard work you also need to use your brain."&nbsp;

T20 World Cup: Mentors can't do much, it's players who have to perform: Sunil Gavaskar on MS Dhoni

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar lauded MS Dhoni after he guided Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to yet another IPL title on Friday. CSK defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 27 runs in the IPL 2021 final at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai. Gavaskar was all praise for Dhoni - the leader and explained why he will go down as one of the greatest captains ever.

Dhoni, who did not have a great season on the personal front and struggled with the willow, was brilliant once again as a captain and marshalled his troops to perfection. From missing out on a spot in the playoffs last season to winning the title this year, Dhoni's men completed a remarkable turnaround.

Gavaskar said Dhoni's ability to back players irrespective of their failures ensures the team is never under pressure from the captain's side. The batting legend also marvelled at CSK skipper's leadership qualities and pointed out how every individual has his own game plan under Dhoni and the captain rarely interferes with those.

"It's very impressive because he has shown faith in the players. Look, you know the ability of the players and you also know that in this game of cricket, there will be days when a player doesn't do well. He might be a brilliant fielder, but might drop catches and misfield. As a batsman, you could also get out to full-tosses. And also, for the bowlers, they may bowl the occasional bad ball which gets hit for sixes. But if you know as a captain a player's capability, you allow them that bad day or a bad over and that is what Dhoni is so good as," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

"With him what happens is that he just doesn't put any pressure on his own team. He just lets them express themselves. It is so true in MSD's case. He doesn't seem to interfere at all in anybody's game plan. Every individual has his own game plan. And once the captain is convinced that is how it is, he is not going to interfere," he added.

Dhoni is one of the most successful captains in the history of IPL with four titles to his name. He has led CSK in a total of 12 seasons so far and has inspired them to nine finals and four trophies. Dhoni's clever street-smart captaincy coupled with his ability to remain calm and composed in the most pressurising situations, makes him stand out as a leader.

Batting legend Gavaskar, who has himself led team India in the past, said he was not fortunate enough to be in the same change room as Dhoni but can see why the tag 'Captain Cool' suits him well.

"I haven't been fortunate enough to have been in the same change room as MS Dhoni. But I just see the calmness that he brings to situations. He is not Captain Cool for nothing. There is never any panic. For the first time in that 19th over, when Thakur bowled wides, for the first time, I saw him diddle a bit because it was only delaying the inevitable," said Gavaskar.

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar says Virat Kohli has given Royal Challengers Bangalore that kind of a profile which only a few cricketers can manage for their respective franchises despite not winning an IPL trophy. Kohli's dreams of winning an IPL title with RCB ended in a heartbreak after Kolkata Knight Riders beat them by four wickets in the eliminator on Monday. Gavaskar said not all scripts are written in the manner players want them to. Kohli had announced that he would step down as CB skipper after the end of the 14th edition of the lucrative league.

"He has given RCB that kind of profile, that brand recognition that very (few) cricketers have given to their franchise," Gavaskar told Star Sports. The former India captain compared Kohli's last match as RCB skipper with Donald Bradman and Sachin Tendulkar farewells. "Everybody wants to finish on a high. But these things never always happen according to your or fans' wishes. Look at what happened to Sir Don Bradman. Just four runs were needed in his last innings and he gets out for a zero. "Sachin Tendulkar would have wanted to finish with a hundred, he got 79 (Tendulkar scored 74) in Mumbai, his 200th Test match. 79 is not bad but somebody who is used to making hundreds would have wanted to get those extra 21 runs and then end his Test career there," Gavaskar added.

Sharing his thoughts on Kohli's failure to lift an IPL trophy, Gavaskar said Kohli had an ever-lasting impact on the team and mentioned the 2016 season when he amassed close to 1000 runs in a single edition. "The script is not always written that way. Not everybody has this great fortune of going on a high. But can one ever dispute what he has done for RCB? He has done magnificently. "There was one year when he got 973 runs, 27 runs short of 1000 runs. Nobody has done it, nobody looks like ever getting to 1000 runs."

Since taking over as RCB's captain in 2013, Kohli has led the team to the play-offs four times, including the last two seasons, and the final in 2016. Kohli led RCB in 140 matches, winning 66 and losing 70. Four games did not produce any results.

Mumbai Indians (MI) stars Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan have both been out of form in the UAE leg of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Their struggles in the middle-order has become a concern for Mumbai Indians as the Rohit Sharma-led side remains at the seventh spot on the points table at present, with little chance of making it to the playoffs.

Suryakumar, who has been one of the consistent run-getters for Mumbai Indians over the past few years, has managed to notch up 222 runs in 12 matches so far and his failure to deliver has cost the side dearly in crucial matches in UAE. Kishan, on the other hand, has been dropped from the playing XI after a string of poor performances.

The left-hand wicket-keeper batsman has so far played only eight matches this season and has scored only 107 runs. Both Kishan and Suryaumar had earned their maiden India caps earlier this year, riding on their super show in the IPL. They have also been named in India's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021.

However, their poor form in the UAE leg of IPL 2021 ahead of the World Cup has raised concerns for the Indian team as well. Batting legend and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar feels both Ishan and Suryakumar have become relaxed after their India debuts and need to give themselves some time out in the middle to avoid making wrong shot selections.

“I think it looks to me like, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan have just relaxed a little bit after getting the India cap. They might not have, but some of the shots they are playing – it looks like they are trying to play these big shots just because they are India players,"&nbsp;said Gavaskar on Star Sports show Cricket Connected.

Delhi Capitals (DC) spinner R Ashwin was involved in an ugly spat with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Eoin Morgan and pace Tim Southee in the clash between the two sides in IPL 2021 last week. The heated argument took place after Ashwin ran an extra run in the game when the ball deflected after a throw hit Pant, who was batting in the middle with the spinner.

Ashwin running for an extra un off the deflection did not go down well with KKR players as Morgan and Southee both had a heated exchange with Ashwin after the spinner was dismissed in the final over of DC's innings. The spat between Ashwin and Morgan took an ugly turn after the KKR captain termed Ashwin's act of taking the extra run 'disgraceful', igniting the 'spirit of cricket debate' once again.&nbsp;

While several former cricketers backed Ashwin as he was within the rules to take the extra run, some slammed the Delhi Capitals spinner for his action. Ashwin himself had shared a long thread on Twitter, lashing out at Morgan and Southee while explaining his side of the story. Now, batting legend Gavaskar has shared his views on the incident and said it is unfair to blame Ashwin. The former India captain questioned why nobody is asking Pant why did he take the run when the ball had hit him.

"What nobody asked is, why did Pant run? He was the one who was struck by the ball and if at all anybody should have known that the tradition is not to take the run after the ball is deflected, then it was the Delhi skipper. Maybe, in the heat of the battle and the anxiety to add runs to the team’s total, he took that extra run," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day.

Gavaskar further stated that Pant could have stepped in at the time and tried to defuse the situation when Morgan and Ashwin were having a go at each other. However, the batting legend insisted that it is not easy to control emotions when playing in the scorching heat of the UAE.

"But why blame Ashwin? He may not have even seen the ball hitting his skipper as he would be intent on getting to his end and may have only seen the ball that was away from a fielder and so responded for the extra run. Pant could have stepped in and defused the situation, but in the intensity of the battle and especially in the hot and humid desert atmosphere, it is extremely tough to keep a cool head, so he may have not realised what had happened," Gavaskar added.

Sunil Gavaskar says Rohit Sharma should be India's captain for next two T20 World Cups

Indian skipper Virat Kohli is all set to step down as the T20 captain of the Men in Blue post the conclusion of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE this year. Kohli had announced his decision to step down as T20 captain ahead of the start of the ongoing second leg of IPL 2021 in UAE. He will be also stepping down as the captain of his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore after the end of the current season.

Kohli was appointed India's captain across all three formats in 2017, taking over from former captain MS Dhoni. Under him, India have won some memorable series both at home and overseas and also made it to the semi-final of the 2019 ODI World Cup, and the final of the World Test Championship earlier this year. However, India are yet to win a major ICC trophy under Kohli.

With back-to-back T20 World Cups set to be staged in 2021 and 2022, Kohli has decided to continue as a pure batsman in the shortest format while leading the team in ODIs and Tests. BCCI is yet to announce India's next T20I captain with Rohit Sharma likely to take over from Kohli.

Legendary batsman and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has picked Rohit Sharma as the ideal replacement for Kohli while naming KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant as potential candidates to become the Indian team's next vice-captain in T20Is. Rohit is currently India's vice-captain in T20Is and ODIs.

Both Rahul and Pant are leading their respective franchises in the ongoing IPL 2021. While Rahul is the skipper of Punjab Kings, Pant has been leading Delhi Capitals, who currently sit on the second spot on the points table with 16 points from ten matches.

Sunil Gavaskar wants Rohit Sharma to replace Virat Kohli as India's T20 skipper, names potential vice-captain

Rajasthan Royals (RR) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by two runs in a thrilling high-scoring contest in match 32 of IPL 2021, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai on Tuesday (September 21). The RR franchise were all-out for 185 in 20 overs after attacking knocks from Yashasvi&nbsp;Jaiswal, Liam Livingstone and Mahipal Lomror.&nbsp;

In reply, PBKS were on course for an easy win with an impressive 120-run opening stand between KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal (67) before the one-time runners-up surrendered the momentum in the final over, failing to chase down 4 off 6 balls with 8 wickets in hand. Despite RR's emphatic win, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar wasn't impressed with Samson's shot-selection after the RR captain fell for a 5-ball 4, trying to play his shots despite not even settling in the middle.&nbsp;

For the unversed, this is Samson's third successive single digit score in T20s, after his twin flop shows for India in the Sri Lanka T20Is. Hence, the former Indian opener Gavaskar said on Star Sports, "What has let him down is the shot selection. Even at the international level, he doesn't open the batting there. He was the second or the third wicket down. And he looks to hit the first ball out of the ground. That is impossible. That is absolutely impossible even if you've been in the richest vein of form. You have got to maybe knock it around for maybe twos and threes and get the feet moving and then look to play."

"That is something he is going to watch out for. Because otherwise, it is going to be a waste of such God-given talent. I have always said that a lot of shot selection boils down to temperament. That is what separates the men from the boys. And therefore, for him to go on and be a regular player for India, his shot selection has to be that much better," added Gavaskar.
